Autoscript Teleprompters and Software Drafted By the New York Yankees for Game-Winning Big-Screen Video Clips

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 1, 2012—To help keep players and coaching staff on cue for their big-screen video clips this season, the New York Yankees recruited teleprompting solutions from Autoscript, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and a world-leading teleprompting company. Autoscript LED8TFT-M portable teleprompters and +WinPlus Studio+ software help the team deliver game-winning entertainment to spectators in the stands.

Autoscript’s eight-inch LED8TFT, selected to join the Yankees during spring training, is ideal for portable prompting applications. Along with the LED8TFT, the production setup includes Sony cameras, tripods from Sachtler and Vinten as well as Litepanels lighting.

The LED8TFT incorporates a built-in tally light, tally sensor input, and provides an illuminated control panel for easy viewing. As brightness level is critical to a portable prompting system used outdoors, the LED8TFT high-bright display helps deliver outstanding performance under daylight conditions. In addition, the LED8TFT features a compact size, rugged all-metal case and an on-camera mounting system versatile enough for nearly any portable camera.

“We especially like the portability of the equipment, as we are often using it in the field. The LED8 gives us that flexibility,” says Michael Bonner, senior director of scoreboard & broadcasting, Yankees. “We also wanted our players to be comfortable with the readability and the pace of the prompter to ensure clear delivery of the messages, including PSAs, welcome messages, trivia questions, etc. that ultimately end up on the big screen during home games.”

+WinPlus Studio+ delivers the flexibility and smart design required by a professional broadcast environment. A Windows-based software package that adds the ease of “point-and-click” functionality to an intuitive on-screen edit display, +WinPlus Studio+ can provide stand-alone prompting for presentation and general production both in the studio and on location. Features include a fully active run order, which can be manipulated at any time during scrolling, as well as instant prompt editing. WinPlus Studio is available with an internal PCI card or external box connected via USB.

“It is really simple to make a quick fix in the software,” adds Bonner. “Every now and then a player might suggest a copy change, so using the WinPlus software, we’re able to simply make the change at the player’s request and it appears on the monitor for them just how they wanted it. In addition, if we need assistance with the hardware or software, it is easy to reach out to the support folks and get solutions.”

PWS PROVIDES EQUIPMENT AND TECHNICAL SERVICES FOR STARLIGHT THEATRE’S FIRST-EVER INDOOR PRODUCTION

Renowned Kansas City Theatre Presents Elton John’s Spectacular Musical, Aida

KANSAS CITY, MO, SEPTEMBER 27, 2012—When Kansas City’s Starlight Theatre produced its first summer musical indoors at its new Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, it turned to Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, to supply audio equipment and technical services for the Elton John and Tim Rice musical spectacular, Aida.

“Since the 1950s, the Starlight Theatre has been known for its outdoor wireless performances,” says Brooks Schroeder, project manager, PWS. “So when they came to us to help provide audio equipment and technical services for its first indoor show in the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, we wanted to make sure its loyal subscribers would be able to hear the performances just as well, if not better, than they had become accustomed to at the outdoor amphitheatre.”

During Aida’s 13-show run at the Muriel Kauffman Theatre, which began on August 3, PWS, working in conjunction with Vista Productions, provided 32 wireless microphones and antenna systems for the show. Propriety gear included Masque Sound’s AF8-X antenna distribution system and Masque Sound LM series to monitor all the mics. In addition, PWS utilized a remote to handle the opposite end of the stage.

The 1,800-seat Muriel Kauffman Theatre includes multiple balconies and box seating on either side of the theatre, placing attendees much closer to the stage than in most other auditorium-type venues. With a 5,000-square-foot stage, an orchestra pit that can house up to 90 musicians and a 74-foot-tall fly tower, it is the performance home of the Kansas City Ballet and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, as well as the site of many other theatrical, musical and dance productions.

“For the past five seasons, Starlight has allowed PWS and Masque to really combine our strengths as a company. Having the support of Masque Sound as a leading sound provider for Broadway certainly gives us an advantage,” adds Schroeder. “The show looked and sounded absolutely amazing.”

As part of PWS’s expert services and solutions, Schroeder remained on site during the two-week run to oversee all of the show’s audio and wireless coordination as well.

PROFESSIONAL WIRELESS SYSTEMS RF SPECTRUM MANAGEMENT GROOVES TO THE BEAT AT FIRST ANNUAL PREMIOS TU MUNDO

Expert Frequency Coordination Keeps Telemundo’s Awards Celebration Interference Free

MIAMI, SEPTEMBER 25, 2012—When Telemundo kicked off its inaugural Premios Tu Mundo awards show, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, was on hand at the Fillmore at Jackie Gleason Theatre in Miami Beach, providing frequency coordination and services for the Spanish-language network’s first-annual awards gala and red carpet show.

Presented by Telemundo, Premios Tu Mundo (Your World Awards) is a celebration of pop culture and a musical spectacular combining the power of television, Web, mobile and social media platforms to give fans the final say in what’s hot in everything that moves and inspires them, including telenovelas, music, fashion, movies and sports.

For the Premios Tu Mundo broadcast, PWS provided Shure Axient™ and UHF-R wireless microphone systems, BTR-800 wireless intercoms and Comtek IFB systems. PWS worked in conjunction with Baltimore-based East Shore Sound, which handled the wired intercorm and IFBs for the telecast . For the red carpet telecast prior to the main show, PWS provided Shure UHF-R® wireless microphone systems, BTR-800 wireless intercoms and Lectrosonics IFBs.

The Shure Axient wireless management network is a comprehensive, innovative and fail-safe system. With its advanced planning, setup and control capabilities, it is an extremely reliable product, especially in the heavily populated Miami television environment. “Anytime you do a show in Miami, there are a lot of local television stations that you have to deal with, so frequency coordination is a major challenge—especially during red carpet events,” says Brooks Schroeder, project manager, PWS. “Our expertise and the services we are able to provide, along with the gear we select, allow us to find, isolate and minimize any potential problems that may arise.”

During the festivities, three experts from PWS were on site, monitoring the RF spectrum to ensure the show ran smoothly without interference issues.

Adaptive Video Walls and Displays Creates Flyable Video Wall for the Cube Lounge at the Rivers Chicago Casino

Flexible Video Walls Can Be Retracted According to Venue’s Specific Need

CHICAGO, SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 — Adaptive Video Walls and Displays, a division of Adaptive Technologies Group and the premier provider of innovative wall-mountable, floor-standing, interlocking and flyable video wall frames for multiple LCD, LED and plasma monitors, teamed up with SVT, a company that provides design, installation, management and service of turnkey technology solutions in a variety of venues, to create three interlocking video walls for the Cube Lounge at the Rivers Chicago Casino. Cube Lounge, a multimedia sports lounge by day and state-of-the-art nightclub/live-performance space by night, can raise and lower the Adaptive video frames from the ceiling, instantly transforming the space as needed.

When the lounge is being utilized as a sports venue, a two-sided 2X1 video wall, consisting of four 55-inch NEC flat-screen LCD displays, is positioned over the bar area. In the center of the lounge is a two-sided 6X1 video wall that also has 55-inch NEC LCD displays. During live performances, the front stage area houses a complete 4×4 video wall, which consists of sixteen 46-inch NEC ultra-thin bezel LCD displays. This video wall can be configured to exhibit one large image across all the displays or up to sixteen different images. When the venue is in nightclub mode, the entire video wall can then be lifted out of sight.

Adaptive’s precision-machined connecting bars and compression locks link multiple LCD frames together, horizontally and vertically, in both landscape and portrait orientations. Precisely dimensioned mounting frames and LCD monitors are assembled in tiers, and then the completed and locked assembly is flown utilizing a load-rated rigging beam and suspension components. Rigging beams secure to the top and bottom of the video wall for tilting displays, and cam-style compression locks provide seamless alignment between LCDs. Powder-coated alloy steel-welded frames and precision-machined connecting bars provide rugged overhead lifting for nearly any application.

“We are thrilled that we were able to solve the Cube Lounge’s multi-purpose needs through the use of our flying interlocking video walls,” says Paul Allen, president, Adaptive Technologies Group. “Our video walls help to easily transform this venue from a sports bar to a night club setting, with just a click of a button.”

In addition to the frames designed for use in this project, Adaptive Video Walls and Displays provides frames for various other LCD and plasma models that are employed in many permanent and rental and staging applications around the world, including narrow bezel models produced by NEC, Sharp, Orion, Samsung and ViewSonic.

DPA Microphones’ 4060 Miniature Capsule Mic Provides Discreet Clarity for Tony Award-Winning Musical Once

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 11, 2012 – Once, Broadway’s Tony Award-winning Best New Musical, relies on DPA Microphones’ 4060 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones to provide a transparent sound in a small, discreet capsule. Based on the 2007 Academy Award-winning film of the same name, Once takes place on a set designed to give audience members the illusion that they are watching a true event unfold, making them feel as though they are right on stage with the actors. The natural sound DPA 4060s have aided in giving this impression.

With such specific requirements, Once Sound Designer Clive Goodwin turned to the DPA 4060 for its excellent sound and ability to provide an intimate sound in a large Broadway theater. To achieve this, Goodwin hides the DPA 4060 in the actors’ hair or beards, with the microphones in close proximity to the mouth, where possible. He also hides a 4060 in the concertina, and each of the ukuleles and cajons, as well as two in the accordion. By equipping each actor and musician with the small capsules, Goodwin ensures that audience members are visually unaware of any amplification happening behind the scenes.

“My main consideration in selecting a microphone was the sound quality,” says Goodwin. “To me, the DPA 4060s have a transparency and clarity that is missing in many other mics of this type. They have a sound that is closer to a large diaphragm microphone than a tiny body mic, and they accurately transmit the sounds of the instruments and the actors’ voices. This is important, because you have to start with a good source, such as the DPA 4060, because the audio just gets degraded through other gear after that.”

Supplied by Masque Sound, the new microphones are being used with Sennheiser wireless systems. Designed for use with wireless systems in theater, television and instrument applications that use close microphones, DPA’s 4060 miniature microphones are exceedingly accurate and highly unobtrusive. Because of their small size, these tiny condensers exhibit a precise omnidirectional pattern and therefore do not need to be aimed directly at the sound source to achieve quality pickup.

As Once is staged in a 1,000-seat theater, Goodwin’s ultimate goal was to make every audience member feel close to the stage. With very few sets or props involved in the production, he knew that the best way to draw people into the performance was through sound. “One of the factors we considered when selecting microphones for the production was making the actors’ voices sound natural,” he notes. “Our show isn’t as loud as you might expect it to be; I wanted it to sound as natural as possible. I also wanted to retain the sense of intimacy that we had in the small theaters where we did our workshops.

This way, the audience would be drawn into the production, rather than just listening to the music. Our aim was for them to listen closely and be drawn into the story that unfolds. And, it seems to be working, as people are leaving the theater with smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. I think the DPA 4060 plays a significant role in this.”
