Bexel Hits Hole-in-One For PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda

Bexel Provides Portable Solutions, Fiber and Engineering Support to Remote Setting for Sixth Consecutive Year

SOUTHAMPTON, BERMUDA, DECEMBER 3, 2012Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group’s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, was on site at the 2012 PGA Grand Slam of Golf for the sixth consecutive year, providing engineering support, portable solutions and fiber for the renowned tournament. Bexel set up the event’s broadcast facility, including the company’s customizable Hercules Flypack, to help meet the competition’s complex, remote production requirements in Southampton, Bermuda.

“We look forward to this event each year, as it is a challenging event in terms of logistics, and yet it all comes together beautifully,” says Johnny Pastor, director, Bexel. “Our expertise really came into play this year, as the island just missed Hurricane Rafael before the start of the event. It caused delays in getting to Bermuda for the event, but once on the ground, our team of experts was able to set up for it swiftly.”

Included in the Hercules Flypack this year was the Sony MVS-7000X 4 M/E multi-format digital 3G production switcher; EVS XT3 six-channel production servers; a custom production monitor wall with up to 224 virtual displays utilizing Evertz multi-image display processors; an Evertz EMR multi-format video router—160×288 with 11 XLink™ video display processors; an Evertz audio router—576×576 AES, 96×96 analog audio, 20 MADI ports; and a mix of Sony and Panasonic multi-format HD VTRs. Fourteen Sony HDC-2500 camera systems were utilized, as well as two Calrec Artemis Beam digital audio consoles with Bluefin 2 high-density signal processing, 48 multi-layer faders and the Calrec Hydra2 I/O network.

In addition, the Grand Slam announce booth was based around a Calrec Hydra2 32×32 analog I/O box—using Calrec 32×32 Edac analog I/O. The box was interconnected to the main console with single-mode fiber, and all microphone, talkback, IFB and four-wire signals were distributed to the booth via the Calrec Hydra2 I/O.

Two fiber engineers were on site, charged with handling the extensive fiber optic specifications for the event. The infrastructure included 15,000 feet of tactical fiber cable for RF camera antennas, 32,000 feet of tactical fiber cable for Telecast HDX camera SMPTE eliminators and 47,000 feet of SMPTE fiber camera cable.

“Whether it was developing a state-of-the-art, network-level production facility overnight or implementing a fiber infrastructure, Bexel’s Hercules Flypack and our team of eight engineering professionals proved yet again to be a winning combination for this year’s championship,” concludes Pastor.

Established in 1979, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf is a 36-hole tournament that matches the current winners of golf’s four major championships—The Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship. This season-ending event was televised October 22 to 24.

Bexel Helps Pac-12 Networks Go Live With Custom Rental Package

Broadcast Equipment Helps Support Tier One Sports, Olympic Events and Studio Production During Inaugural Season of Broadcasting Enterprise

BURBANK, CA, NOVEMBER 30, 2012—When Pac-12 Networks began broadcasting on August 15, Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group’s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, was on hand, providing rental gear and support for the new sports broadcasting endeavor.

Currently in its inaugural year, Pac-12 Networks is a full-time network dedicated solely to the Pac-12. Available to cable, satellite and telephone companies, it is comprised of a national network and six regional feeds providing 24/7 access to Pac-12 teams and universities. The network and feeds televise more than 800 live sporting events annually, and will showcase 12 Conference Championship events each year.

For the network’s Tier-One sports events, Bexel provided six announce booth lighting packages, including the Litepanels 1×1 Bi-Focus lights and grip accessories. This gear will light up the booths for on-air talent covering conference football and basketball games. Bexel also rented RF microphone kits for sideline cameras, as well as large parabolic microphones for player voices and sounds.

“One of the big challenges we faced was the logistics of taking equipment from one event to another,” says John Mills, business development manager, Bexel. “As with many new networks, Pac-12 Networks doesn’t know its production broadcast schedule until a week before the game. We faced some logistical challenges with short turnaround times but our staff did a great job assisting in all facets of coordination for the rental packages. We worked closely with the PAC-12 staff to make sure we exceeded their expectations.”

Bexel also provided supplemental gear for the college Olympic events the network covers, including rowing, volleyball, baseball, softball and soccer, among others. For the events at larger venues, Bexel provided a significant amount of fiber optic, cable and terminal gear.

In addition, Bexel supplied equipment for the network’s main studio in San Francisco. On a weekly basis, the studio hosts highlight shows, coach interviews, player portfolios and various other productions for the network. Working in conjunction with the network’s production team, Bexel provided such ancillary gear including XDCAM HD recorders, lighting, audio gear for studio work, cameras and other miscellaneous components.

“This year we supported 35 football games in total,” adds Mills. “We look forward to the rest of the year’s events, including basketball and events in the spring and summer.”

PROFESSIONAL WIRELESS SYSTEMS’ FREQUENCY COORDINATION SIZZLES AT 13TH ANNUAL LATIN GRAMMY AWARDS

LAS VEGAS, NOVEMBER 30, 2012—As the Latin music world’s hottest artists came together for the 13th Annual Latin Grammy Awards earlier this month at the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino in Las Vegas, Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, was stationed on the green carpet, managing frequency coordination and equipment—working to avoid any possible interference issues during the pre-awards green carpet show.

Broadcast by television network Univision, the Latin Grammy Awards, presented by the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry. For this year’s Latin Grammy Awards package, PWS integrated in-ear monitors and wireless communication for the Latin Grammy’s and managed all wireless audio systems for the green carpet show pre-show.

“This year was a little different for us in that we switched from a 2.4-GHz wireless intercom to the Telex BTR800 series wireless intercoms,” said Jason Eskew, PWS project manager. “We found the RF performance was better outside on the crowded green carpet. The BTR systems gave longer distance and more consistent coverage.”

PWS also provided Univision with 16-channel PSM 1000 in-ear monitors. For the Latin Grammy Awards, Univision took delivery of two custom racks to replace its former aging in-ear monitors. According to Eskew, “The PSM 1000s allowed us to completely focus on all of the other things we needed to do. Knowing the PSM 1000 system was rock solid, low stress and maintenance free is a huge weight off our backs. Even when the PSM 1000s get into a low-signal-strength condition, they mute quietly and cleanly. It’s much safer for the artist and makes our job a whole lot easier.”

Another responsibility the PWS crew took on was monitoring the green carpet for any potential interference from ENG crews. “With all of the frequencies being used in and around the strip, doing a live show in Las Vegas is always a bit of a challenge from a wireless coordination standpoint,” added Eskew. “Our experience, the services we are able to provide, along with the gear we select, allows us to find, isolate and minimize any potential problems that may arise.”

The inaugural annual Latin Grammys ceremony was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on September 13, 2000. Broadcast by CBS, that ceremony became the first primarily Spanish language primetime program carried on an English-language American television network.

Clear-Com Improves Delivery of Event Services at Mars Discovery District

Tempest2400 Wireless Intercoms with Seamless Roaming Ensure Reliable Communications

TORONTO, NOVEMBER 28, 2012 ─ Clear-Com®, a global leader in critical voice communication systems, is providing MaRS Discovery District, an organization focused on developing Canada’s next generation of growth companies, with uninterrupted wireless communications across its Toronto facility. Always staying at the forefront of innovation, MaRS is one of the first companies to take advantage of Clear-Com’s Tempest®2400 digital wireless intercom with the new Seamless Roaming feature. This capability allows the MaRS technical crew members to move freely throughout the spacious MaRS facility with dependable wireless coverage and provide customer support faster than ever before.

To effectively service its numerous meetings and events each month, the MaRS staff required clear communication in several key locations including the control room, a 4,600-square-foot auditorium in the lower concourse level, and six classrooms that span approximately 9,600-square-feet on ground level. The organization previously employed mobile phones and rented two-way radios to address the challenge, but those devices lacked reception and coverage in many areas. With the Tempest2400 and its Seamless Roaming feature, the MaRS staff can now keep in contact without signal dropout regardless of where they are located in the complex. This has added tremendous efficiency to the organization’s overall workflow and has allowed MaRS to more effectively respond to its customers.

“Our decision to use Clear-Com was based on our past experiences with the company, our knowledge of its stellar reputation within the industry and our confidence in its brand and products,” notes Michael Heath, Manager of Audio Visual Event Services, MaRS. “During live events, communication throughout the venue between our operating staff, especially our remote camera personnel and stage managers, was essential. Thanks to Clear-Com, we were able to resolve this issue with one comprehensive system.”

GerrAudio, Clear-Com’s exclusive Canadian distributor, in conjunction with the radio frequency expert, RP Dynamics, provided MaRS with its new intercom systems. Two Tempest2400 BaseStations with ZSync™ Roaming Dongles are installed in the control room. MaRS also acquired eight Tempest2400 BeltStations and eight Clear-Com CC-300 headsets. From the control room, production operators easily monitor and can quickly configure the wireless systems with a few clicks via Tempest’s T-Desk software. MaRS also purchased a spare remote antenna to ensure expanded coverage if its intercom needs ever changed.

“We’re proud that a notable innovation hub such as MaRS is taking advantage of Clear-Com’s latest wireless product on the market,” says Jay Wallace, Regional Sales Manager, Northwestern USA, Clear-Com. “The Tempest2400 with Seamless Roaming has helped MaRS become more productive, reduce its service delivery time and raise customer satisfaction levels.”

MaRS provides science, technology and social entrepreneurs with top-notched advisors, relevant programs, physical facilities, funding and networks to build their businesses. In 2013, the MaRS Collaboration Centre plans to double in size, extending to 1.5 million square feet, to establish itself as one of the largest urban innovation hubs in the world.

James River Assembly Sings the Praises Of New Outline GTO Line Array Speaker System

System Provides the Clarity and Punch Necessary for Sermons and Music

OZARK, MO, NOVEMBER 27, 2012 – James River Assembly recently upgraded its aging sound system with Outline’s GTO line array loudspeaker cabinets as the sonic centerpiece. The new system, designed and installed by Special Event Services (SES), literally blew away the competition by providing the clarity and punch necessary for sermons, a contemporary house band and concerts. The church seats approximately 3,400 congregants and everyone from the pastor to those sitting in the back row can feel the power of the word through the GTO cabinets.

“We needed to put in a system that conveyed the spoken word throughout the auditorium, as well as have enough horsepower to present the music in an effective way,” says Jason Farah, vice president of SES. “The church members charged with the upgrade were very diligent about listening to various top-shelf systems to evaluate the sound characteristics and quality. The staff even went around the country listening to many systems. In the end, the Outline GTO simply outperformed the other systems, providing the ‘wow factor’ necessary for the final decision.”

The GTO system is comprised of two main left/right arrays, each with six GTO cabinets and one GTO down-fill speaker at the bottom of the array. The subwoofers are Outline Lab 21 HS, employing 21-inch bass speakers. The seating area in the main room is in a 280-degree arc to center stage. Because the platform is so big, the subwoofers are lined up stage center behind the scenic pieces on the stage floor as a sub arc delay system. This ensures that all areas of the room enjoy equal bass coverage. The extreme right and left sides are covered with Outline Doppia II speakers. The GTO series of line array speakers offer a unique combination of high-power output in a compact and relatively lightweight form factor. The cabinets deliver clear, non-colored, high-SPL audio capable of bringing studio environment quality to the live event experience.

“We all agreed that the time had come to upgrade our sound system to meet our evolving style of presentation and worship,” says Stephen Maddox, audio director for James River Assembly. “Our lead pastor, John Lindell, had a vision about how the new system should sound, and after listening to many systems here and in other parts of the country, SES brought in the GTO. The GTO speakers were superbly clear and present without being overbearing. We just loved how it worked, how it sounded, and how it responded. The system is very deep but at the same time warm and inviting. This system truly brings us into the future.”

Sound Devices Brings Array of Audio and Video Production Solutions to CCW 2012

NEW YORK, NOVEMBER 14, 2012 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, showcases its latest audio and video production gear for content creation professionals at this year’s CCW (Booth 946). The company is exhibiting the recently upgraded PIX 240i and PIX 260i Audio/Video Recorders, as well as the 664 Production Mixer.

Sound Devices’ PIX 240i Audio/Video Recorder features a five-inch, IPS-based LCD panel with accurate color rendition and consistent off-axis viewing response. The upgraded display is essential in the field, providing users with immediate confirmation of framing, exposure, focus, audio-metering and setup menu selections. It also offers higher contrast and better off-axis viewing. PIX 240i users can monitor an image’s exposure with Exposure Assist, a feature that depicts either false-color or multilevel zebra stripes. It comes equipped with Focus Assist, which includes a peaking filter and 1:1 pixel zoom. Monitor brightness, contrast and chroma adjustments are also now available. PIX 240i provides standard definition recording (NTSC and PAL) and support for using simultaneous analog and SDI/HDMI audio inputs.

Users can connect the PIX 240i to cameras with HDMI (plus SDI with the PIX 240i) and record directly to QuickTime using Apple’s ProRes or Avid’s DNxHD codecs. Use of these codecs enables files recorded in the field to be used directly in post production, making the workflow simple and fast. The audio circuitry on the PIX 240i is based on Sound Devices’ award-winning 7-Series Digital Audio Recorders. The low-noise (-128 dBu EIN), high-headroom, high-bandwidth inputs are mic/line switchable and include limiters, high-pass filters and phantom power.

Also on display is the Sound Devices PIX 260i Production Audio/Video Recorder. Based on the field-proven PIX 240i recorder, the rack-mounted PIX 260i is a file-based audio/video deck that seamlessly replaces tape-based video decks in production and post-production environments, while offering 32 tracks of audio record/playback. Using the Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD codecs, the PIX 260i records and plays files at up to 220 Mbps in high-quality, 10-bit 4:2:2 video. It also records 32 tracks of 48-kHz audio. Files from the PIX 260i are ready for direct import into the Avid and Final Cut Pro editing platforms, eliminating time-consuming transferring and transcoding. Files can also play out of the PIX 260i for real-time applications.

The PIX 260i has a built-in, five-inch 800 x 480-pixel IPS video display that allows users tto view video and setup-menu selections. With its extensive control capabilities, the PIX 260i is a flexible video playback source, compatible with Final Cut Pro 7, Final Cut Pro X and Avid Quicktime files. The PIX 260i can be controlled by both external RS-422 and via Ethernet through its embedded Web server, allowing for machine transport control over Ethernet-based networks.

Up to four SATA drives can be connected to the PIX 260i simultaneously. For RAID-type redundancy and to eliminate the need for post-record copying when multiple copies are required, users can record to all four drives simultaneously.

As with the PIX 240i, the PIX 260i includes a built-in Ambient Clockit time-code generator/reader with genlock output for rock-steady, multi-camera and double-system sound applications. In addition to generating ultra-stable time code, time codes can be read from the SDI stream, the HDMI stream or from an external source.

Sound Devices will also be featuring its 664 Production Mixer at CCW 2012. The 664 was designed to build upon the powerful features of the company’s best-selling line of field and production mixers and offers expanded input/output connectivity and recording capabilities, along with greater flexibility and ease-of-use. The flagship recorder’s six input channels have dedicated controls for trim, fader, pan and PFL. The inputs and four output buses are all recordable, for a total of 10 tracks of recording.

The 664 contains six ultra-low noise, high-dynamic range and transformer-less preamps, which accept mic- or line-level signals and include analog peak limiters, high-pass filters, input trim control and direct outputs on every channel. Featuring full analog audio paths for high-performance audio and superb power efficiency, the 664 also has numerous digital capabilities. Inputs 1 and 6 can be selected as AES3 or AES42 inputs for digital microphones, each with its own SRC for simplicity in system clocking.

The 664 can record up to 10 tracks of 16- or 24-bit broadcast WAV files to SD and/or CompactFlash cards. All inputs and outputs are individually selectable for recording, enabling the mixer to record all 10 channels of audio. With the 664’s dual card slots, content can be recorded to either or both cards simultaneously, with the added ability to assign different tracks to each memory card.

Sound Devices is also highlighting a companion accessory, the CL-6 Input Expander, for the 664 Production Mixer. It is designed specifically to add six analog line-level inputs to the mixer. With the CL-6 attached, the direct output connectors are available as inputs, controlled by faders located on the CL-6 front panel. The CL-6 also offers additional LED output metering and duplicate-recording transport controls. With the 664 Production Mixer connected to the CL-6 Input Expander, users can now record all 12 input channels and four outputs, for a total of 16 tracks.

Sound Devices, LLC designs and manufactures portable audio mixers, digital audio recorders, and digital video recorders and related equipment for feature film, episodic television, documentary, news-gathering, and acoustical test and measurement applications. The fourteen-year old company designs and manufactures from their Reedsburg, Wisconsin headquarters with additional offices in Madison, WI and Highland Park, IL.
