Professionak Wireless Systems Showcases Range of RF Solutions for Live and Broadcast Events at InfoComm 2014

LAS VEGAS, JUNE 11, 2014-Professional Wireless Systems (PWS), a Masque Sound Company and experts in supplying and supporting wireless systems for live and broadcast events, will showcase its range of RF solutions at InfoComm 2014 (Booth C11816), including its GX Series of Combiners, DB Series of Multicouplers, Helical Antennas, Domed Helical Antennas, and various accessories such as splitters, Dual Bias Ts and receive and transmit line amps.
href=”http://blog.svconline.com/briefingroom/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/PWS-DB-Series1.jpg”>

“InfoComm is the ‘can’t miss’ AV technology show of the year, and we look forward to demoing our range of state-of-the-art RF and wireless equipment to the industry professionals in attendance at the show,” says Jim Van Winkle, general manager, PWS. “In addition to showcasing our RF solutions, PWS representatives will be on hand to discuss our ability to provide onsite install services and show support for wireless systems at broadcast, industrial, live entertainment and media events of any size.”

At InfoComm 2014, PWS will highlight its GX series of combiners, the GX-4 and GX-8, which offer selectable high and low output settings, as well as above unity gain on output. Helpful for very anemic transmitters, the combiners in the GX series are considered RF limiters because of their proprietary Automatic Level Control (ALC) circuitry. The power level of each frequency at the output of the combiner is a maximum of 250 mW licensed, 50mw if not licensed. This is the FCC’s maximum allowable limit for RF in-ear monitor (IEM) systems in the UHF band. The GX-4 is an RF IEM transmitter combiner/booster, compatible with RF signals from major IEM transmitter manufacturers across the radio band from 470MHz to 698MHz. The system accepts input power levels from 20 to 100 mW, with each input containing its own discreet RF amplifier and ALC circuits. The signals are amplified to the power level needed to produce up to 250 mW of RF at the output antenna port.

PWS will also feature its DB series of Multicouplers, including the DB8 (8 outputs), DB16 (16 outputs) and DB24 (24 outputs). These diversity systems are designed to distribute antenna signals to multiple receivers without loss and with high isolation between ports. Outputs can be put into ranges, providing the user the ability for low, middle and high as well as custom ranges for frequencies. The systems all come packed with features providing the user with maximum control as well as two power supplies, ensuring that if there is a power failure, backup is available.

Two of PWS’ flagship product lines, Helical Antennas and the new Domed Helical Antennas, will also be onsite. PWS Helical Antennas, which are perfect for long throws and high gain, have become the industry standard for multichannel wireless microphone, in-ear, and intercom systems thanks in part to their unique characteristics, offering users extreme flexibility. The circularly polarized UHF antennas cover a frequency range of 450 MHz to 950 MHz and offer 14dbi gain and 8.5dbi for the Domed Helical. With an inherent boost in gain, greater bandwidth, and dropout-resistant polarization, PWS Helical Antennas outshine the performance of traditional antenna designs. Popular for use with IEM systems, users can employ these antennas with other UHF systems, including wireless microphones and intercom systems.

For venues and installations where site-line appearance is a priority, PWS Domed Helical Antennas offer a wider angle of coverage that’s perfect for smaller stages and medium gain. Featuring the same circular polarization as the original PWS Helical Antenna, the Domed Helical features a more durable, sealable enclosure, and compact profile. Inconspicuous and robust, the PWS Domed Helical Antenna is a great choice when the requirements of aesthetics and function can’t be compromised.

Additionally, PWS has recently begun to streamline its manufacturing process to accommodate faster turnaround time when it comes to product development. “To continue to provide the necessary support and high-level functionality on today’s in-demand productions, we are constantly looking for ways to improve both our products and our services, as a company,” adds Van Winkle. “We specialize in frequency coordination that is solid, accurate and constant, as is our workflow.”

DPA Microphones d:fine™ 66 and 88 Miniature Headset Mics Make InfoComm Debut

New mics join the original 4066/4088 and d:fine Headsets in the d:fine family to meet a variety of needs

LAS VEGAS, JUNE 10, 2014 DPA Microphones’ new d:fine™ 66 and d:fine 88 Miniature Headset Microphones will be on display at InfoComm 2014 (Booth C11936). Ideal for productions involving presenters and performers needing to move freely about a stage without obstructions from a handheld mic or mic stand, the d:fine 66 and d:fine 88 have joined the company’s d:fine Headset Microphone family, which now addresses a variety of sound handling and size options, depending on the intended application.

With a contemporary look and classic sound, the d:fine 66 and d:fine 88 combines the 4066 Omni and 4088 Cardioid microphone capsules with features of the modern d:fine headsets, such as an advanced mount and flexible ear hooks. The new DPA d:fine 66 Omnidirectional Headset Microphone and d:fine 88 Directional Headset Microphone, which are recognized by their rounded capsules, are intended for use by actors, musicians and singers who require optimal sound and grid cleaning/changing options.

“We introduced the d:fine Headset Microphones a few years ago and selected the name based on a belief that the microphone would define a new generation of headsets,” says Christian Poulsen, CEO of DPA Microphones. “The d:fine certainly did meet our expectations, so we have now decided to expand the d:fine Headset series to include this third solution to give users a broad assortment of headsets and features. Featuring a total of four capsules – two omnis and two cardioids – and three headset mounts – single-ear, dual-ear and personalized mount, the d:fine Headset Microphones Series offers something for every user and environment.”

When DPA Microphones launched its d:fine Headset Microphones, the company met a market demand, which created a new niche of DPA headset users that did not affect the popularity of the original 4066 and 4088s. Thanks to the strong popularity of both microphone lines, this third option in the d:fine series comes as a result of a growing need for durable body worn microphone solutions with excellent sound reproduction and sturdy casing for stringent use in live environments.

Masque Sound Fills Charleston with Sweet Music for 38th Season Of Spoleto Festival USA

Custom Audio Equipment Package Turns on the Charm for Celebration of America’s Premier Performing Arts Gathering

CHARLESTON, SC, JUNE 10, 2014 – When the 38th annual Spoleto Festival USA, America’s premier performing arts festival, kicked off on May 23, Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, was on-hand to provide Sound Supervisor Lew Mead with an extensive custom audio equipment package for the multi-venue, two-week long celebration.

For 17 days and nights each spring, Spoleto Festival USA fills Charleston, South Carolina’s historic theaters, churches and outdoor spaces with performances by renowned and emerging artists and performers in opera, theater and dance, as well as chamber, symphonic, choral and jazz music.

As sound supervisor, Mead is given the incredibly challenging task of piecing together all of the different equipment and staffing needs of the various companies at each venue, to not only provide them all with exactly what they need for their shows but also to allow them the flexibility to coordinate with multiple performers in one space. In order to pull this off, Mead begins his pre-planning as early as November of the previous year and works with an audio staff of 10 engineers during the festival.

“Months before the festival, we compile all of the drawings and requirements for each artist and performer,” says Mead. “I then work with the venues directly to discuss which equipment we can place in each location. Lighting Supervisor Andy Cissna, Special Projects/Carpentry Coordinator Paul Hunter, Director of Production at Spoleto Festival Rhys Williams and I are in constant communication to try to blend all of the different requirements for each venue together so that it works for all parties involved.”

In addition, Festival Engineer Kate Foretek spent two weeks in the Masque Sound shop, piecing together the various custom equipment packages that the festival events required before shipping the packages to Charleston.

“The crew at Masque Sound has been fantastic to work with and incredibly helpful in terms of assisting our team through the engineering and extensive planning that goes into all of the different events,” adds Mead. “Everyone at Masque Sound is very forward-thinking, and they were all quick to anticipate and address our needs. Additionally, the depth of their inventory is great. They are always able to provide us with the exact equipment we are looking for.”

One particular instance in which Masque Sound was able to provide Mead with specific equipment to accommodate a performer’s request occurred during preparations for acclaimed recording artist Lucinda Williams’ performance. “Lucinda Williams requested two DiGiCo SD10 Live Digital consoles for her performance at the TD Arena,” says Mead. “We haven’t used the SD10s in the past, because they’ve been quite a rare commodity in the industry, but Masque Sound stocks them in its inventory and ensured that the consoles would be made available to my team. We were thrilled to be able to supply Ms. Williams with these fantastic consoles, as the sound quality was impeccable.”

Mead also credits Masque Sound’s customer service and hands-on approach as a big part of the festival’s success. “When I’m looking at these venues, I try to do it with an open mind, envisioning the different equipment that Masque Sound can offer me and seeing if I can make it work. Scott Kalata, from Masque Sound, came down to Charleston and toured all of the venues with me and came up with some suggestions, which was very helpful. The fact that I can call anyone on the team—whether that person is Scott, Gary Stocker or Dennis Short—and quickly be offered equipment advice is a huge benefit. It is really great to be able to rely on them as a resource, and it is very reassuring to know that with their extensive inventory, they can accommodate my needs for an event of this size and scope.”

In total, the festival utilized more than 200 microphones, 100 speakers and 5 digital consoles from some of the audio industry’s top manufacturers, including DiGiCo, Sennheiser, JBL and Meyer, all adding up to an incredibly successful premier performing arts festival.

Masque Sound Custom Audio Equipment Package Captures the Magic for Shakespeare’s Fantasy Play, The Tempest

CAMBRIDGE, MA, JUNE 5, 2014 – When Sound Designer Darron L West and Associate Sound Designer Charles Coes were looking to create a dazzling audio experience for William Shakespeare’s fantasy play The Tempest, they turned to Masque Sound, a leading theatrical sound reinforcement, installation and design company, to provide a custom audio equipment package.

The Tempest is a co-production between The Smith Center for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas and the American Repertory Theater (A.R.T.) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The play premiered under a big top tent in Las Vegas on April 1 and is now playing at the A.R.T’s Loeb Drama Center.

The Tempest tells the story of shipwrecked aristocrat Prospero and his daughter Miranda who wash up on the shores of an enchanted and strange island. They find themselves immersed in a world of trickery and amazement, in which Tom Waits’ and Kathleen Brennan’s Dust Bowl balladry, Teller’s (of the legendary duo Penn & Teller) magic, and Pilobolus’ dance movements animate the spirits and monsters.

The sound designers’ goal was to create a very traditional Shakespearean play in the most modern way possible. Most of the soundscape was created by a four-piece live band and an array of eclectic percussive instruments.

“We have live musicians on stage accompanying the actors, so we utilized a lot of microphones and effects units,” says Coes. “We took a modern spin on the idea of a traditional Shakespearean ensemble by updating it to include a mix engineer and console. We really wanted to bring the band out and lift the vocals up so that you could effectively and clearly hear both from within the theater.”

One of the main challenges on the project was to create a sound design for two very different venues. “We encountered quite a bit of ambient noise from air conditioners, trains, helicopters and the nature of being in an unprotected acoustic space at the tent in Las Vegas,” adds Coes. “From there, we transitioned to the very quiet, typical theater space at the A.R.T.”

To give the designers the flexibility and dynamic audio that they were looking for, Masque Sound provided a custom equipment package featuring a Yamaha CL5 mixing console along with Yamaha Rio3224-D Dante digital network remote I/O racks.

For the speaker package, Masque Sound provided d&b audiotechnik Q1s for the left and right line array and a Meyer Sound M’elodie array for the center cluster. “We needed speakers with a lot of horsepower for Las Vegas, but the real challenge lay in the fact that we then needed to fit that same amount of equipment into the A.R.T., which is a shorter house,” continues Coes. “The crew at Masque Sound worked very hard to get us another M’elodie QuickFly frame in an extremely short amount of time, so that we could split our array from a single eight cabinet rig into two side-by-side four cabinet rigs.”

Although not in the original plans, 16 channels of Sennheiser wireless were used as well. “Right before we left the shop, the directing team had some concerns about the background noise in the tent and area mics, and we moved very quickly to change the show over from those area mics to a full RF package with body mics for everyone,” says Coes. “We went from a little bit of wireless to expanding it out to the full cast of 13, and we did it in about three days. Masque was incredibly accommodating and incredibly speedy in making it happen. They are always a great company to work with.”

DPA Microphones and Break of Reality Partner to Support Music Education Programs

Quartet hits the road with company’s d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones; Chooses Oklahoma high school as mic recipient

EDMOND, OK, JUNE 4, 2014DPA Microphones recently joined cello-rock group Break of Reality as advocates for the importance of music education in schools. In conjunction with its tour schedule supporting its latest album, TEN, the group hosted a month-long Music Education Tour, making its way to 10 school districts across the U.S. At these stops, students attended workshops and performances hosted by the quartet to learn about the art and appreciation of music. In an effort to provide music programs with the opportunity to experience world-renowned quality technology, DPA Microphones donated three d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones to Edmond North High School (ENHS), in Edmond, OK, deemed by the band to be the school in greatest need for an audio solution.

“Next year, we will be kicking off our Strolling Strings program, the first of its kind at Edmond,” said Peter Markes, orchestra director at ENHS. “One of the tricky pieces I have been trying to figure out is the best way to amplify a few students for performance programs. These d:vote mics are a great solution. Thank you, DPA and Break of Reality for this generous gift!”

The members of Break of Reality are no strangers to performing for and/or conducting workshops at public schools and wanted to use their good fortune in the industry to afford aspiring musicians with the same opportunities they’ve encountered. That’s when the members decided to launch the Break of Reality Music Education Tour. With the help of fan donations through a Kickstarter campaign to fund the group’s tour expenses, the band members set out on the road with a mission to raise money at each school concert. After the stops, 100 percent of the donations and ticket proceeds were given to the music programs for each school they visited.

“We learned to play our instruments through public school music classes,” shares Ivan Trevino, co-founder and percussionist for the group, which has been performing for more than a decade. “If it weren’t for those programs, I don’t think Break of Reality would exist today.”

In addition to the donation, the band also teamed up with DPA to use the d:votes for its performances on the Music Education Tour. At all schools, especially ENHS, the microphones gave the next generation of musicians the chance to gain hands-on experience with some of today’s most advanced technology.

“We truly value the importance of music education programs,” said Eric Mayer, President of DPA Microphones, Inc. “By providing the d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones, we hope the students at Edmond North High School can learn how to properly amplify their instruments and understand the importance of using a high-quality microphone to capture their sound.”

Ideal for everyone from beginner to professional, the d:vote 4099 Instrument mics were chosen for the school on recommendation from the quartet, which previously selected the d:vote 4099s after experimenting with a series of audio setups, including both pickups and microphones, that continuously fell short of finding an ideal audio solution. Plus, the d:vote 4099 is designed with the touring musician in mind, so it can easily be unclipped and repositioned on the instrument, without any cable ties or other obstructions. This creates an effortless solution for both groups. The accurate natural sound, balanced EQs and functionality of the microphone will come in handy for Break of Reality and Strolling Strings tours.

“The students started using them in our orchestra room, just experimenting, the first day we received them,” continues Markes. “What I like most thus far is their ease of use. While we haven’t had a chance yet to use them in a public venue, we’re already practicing with them in our orchestra room and we’ve found that they are basically plug-and-play to the setup that we have in place. I look forward to using them in different halls as we kick off our Strolling Strings program.”

The DPA mics give the group a sense of comfort that previously did not exist when miking the cellos and they say they can already recognize many benefits of the DPA mics, including a pristine natural sound and the unique mounting solution. “We love the d:vote, I don’t know any other microphone of its kind that is designed specifically for the cello and that makes it a lot easier to work with,” shares Patrick Laird, cellist and Break of Reality co-founder. “The frequency response is much more balanced than anything we’ve used before, so it requires a lot less treatment in the venue. In addition to giving us great sound, the d:vote actually can fit inside the cases while still mounted to the cello, which provides a quick and simple setup.”

With Break of Reality as avid users because of DPA’s reputation for providing highly durable and pristine sounding microphones, and a whole generation of students familiarizing themselves with these features, everyone will be able to perform like the pros.

Solid State Logic Exhibits at InfoComm for the First Time in 2014

Company to Showcase its Live Console with V2 Software to the American ProAV Market

LAS VEGAS – Solid State Logic (SSL), the world’s leading manufacturer of tools for creative audio professionals, is proud to announce that it will be exhibiting at InfoComm (Booth C11329) for the first time in 2014. As part of its continuing expansion into the ProAV market, the company will be presenting the V2 Software for the SSL Live, its first-ever dedicated live sound console. Reception to the console by the live sound production community has been extremely positive since its announcement last year, with Live already appearing on tour with Peter Gabriel, Carlos Santana and Flogging Molly, among others.

Response continues to grow as users show enthusiasm for sonic quality that is inspiring, a creative user experience that is excellent, and reliability and stability that is well beyond expectation. The V2 software release introduces 25 significant new features and demonstrates the rapid pace of ongoing development at SSL. Additions include enhancements to the Output Matrix, Effects Rack, User Interface, Routing, Solo System and Focus Channel, as well as the introduction of a comprehensive Offline Setup application. The new software, released in April, is now standard on all new consoles and is available for free to all existing owners.

New feature highlights:
PC Offline Software
The SSL Live PC Offline Software allows engineers to create, setup and edit all aspects of a Live Showfile from the comfort of their own laptop, making creation or editing of Show and Preset files simple and efficient. The user is presented with the same menus, screens and options as the full console software, creating a familiar user environment, enabling them to configure a Showfile from scratch or load one of the SSL Template files and edit it to their own requirements. All aspects of the Console Configuration can be edited, giving the user full control over the power of the Live’s Tempest processing engine. Full access to stage box setup and routing is provided. Along with naming, colouring and the unique Eyeconix channel identification tools, the layout of Fader Tile layers and banks can also be configured and accessed from the software. As well as control over mix bus routing, pre/post feed point sourcing and all other audio related channel parameters. In addition, the Automation system is fully accessible so that scenes, automation filters and input/output actions can be created, edited and updated. This also includes Group modes, scene re-numbering, etc. Once a Show file has been created or edited, it can be saved and exported to a USB key and then imported into the Live console ready for use.

Matrix Outputs
Matrix Outputs now have EQ, All-pass filters and delay processing available. All 36 Matrix Output paths now have available High and Low Pass Filters, a 4-band parametric equaliser, two seconds of delay and our unique All Pass Filters. This is in addition to the two inserts that can be used with both the internal Effects Rack and external processing. As with all the other path types within the Tempest engine, the processing order can also be changed by the operator to customise the signal flow for their requirements on a Matrix-by-Matrix basis.

Effects
The Version 2 release brings a selection of new effects that introduce additional sonic options and ways to maximise the processing power of the Tempest platform. New effects include four EQ types (the super flexible G-Flex EQ; which comes in 8, 16, 24 and 32 filter versions, a new, smooth Contour EQ, 1 and 2 band Dynamic EQ and a 4+2 Band Parametric), four new Delay effects (Tape Echo, Ping Pong, a new Short Delay and new Multi-Tap delays), ‘Guitar Cabinet’ and ‘Bass Cabinet’ emulations and five Reverbs (Ambient, Cathedral, Stadium, Recording Room and Tight ER). These new reverbs increase usability and make reverb setup much easier whilst retaining the supreme audio quality of the ER Verb from Version 1 Live software. A new Phase Scope Tool has also been added. With All-Pass Filters available on all processed paths, the addition of a Phase Scope to the Effects Rack allows the operator to use them more effectively and speed up their setup. Version 2 also includes a number of enhancements to the SSL Effects Rack itself, to streamline effect browsing, naming and routing.

New Control Surface Functions
A ‘Swap Button’ has been enabled on the console’s Fader Tiles and allows the user to assign any bank of a Fader Tile to the Swap button. Once assigned, the operator uses the Swap function like a ‘Home’ button, letting them jump back to their preferred Fader Bank at any time with one button press. As with the console’s Flip Function, Swap can be used independently per tile or globally if Swap is pressed and held down. With up to 75 banks of faders available, this function adds flexibility and speeds up access no matter how many banks the user has available. A new ‘Focus Channel Lock’ function allows the user to assign a path permanently to the Focus Fader and the Channel Control Tile; perfect for that important channel that you always need to control.

In addition, Tekserve was required to integrate a base level of Cisco Lifecycle Services into their offerings and demonstrate measurably high levels of customer satisfaction based on independently audited customer satisfaction surveys.

The Cisco Resale Channel Program provides partners with the training required to build sales, technical and Cisco Lifecycle Services skills. Cisco resale partner certifications—Gold, Silver, Premier and Select—represent an increasing breadth of skills across key technologies and a partner’s ability to deliver integrated networking solutions. Cisco resale partner specializations—Master, Advanced and Express—reflect an increasing depth of sales, technical and service expertise in particular technologies.
