Bexel Expands Turnkey Broadcast Capabilities with Two-Million-Dollar Purchase of Evertz Routing Systems

New Gear Will be Central to Building Flypack Systems

BURBANK, CA, APRIL 26, 2012—Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group’s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, is continuing its commitment to offer large routing systems as part of the company’s turnkey broadcast capabilities with a recent two-million-dollar purchase of digital broadcast equipment from Evertz Microsystems. Last year, Bexel purchased an additional two-million-dollars’ worth of Evertz routing and processing equipment. The gear made its debut at the 2011 US Open Tennis Tournament.

Bexel’s latest investment in Evertz large routing systems extends to Evertz’s Xenon routers. Included in the current purchase are four new Xenon routers, including a Xenon 128 x 128 3G/HD/SD video router, two Xenon 32 x 64 3G/HD/SD video routers and a Xenon 32 x 32 3G/HD/SD video router. This significant purchase builds upon Bexel’s investment in Evertz’s larger EMR and EQX routers and signal processing equipment last year.

The Xenon allows any mix of formats within a frame in independent blocks of 32 inputs or outputs. Any of the supported formats, including 3G, HD, SD, AES and analog, can be expanded to fill an entire 128 x 128 frame. Additionally, the Xenon supports optical routing from 3Mbps to 3Gbps in blocks of 32 inputs or outputs. The Xenon is housed in a 4-RU frame, switching up to 64 sources to 64 destinations, or in an 8-RU frame, switching up to 128 sources to 128 destinations. Additional input and output modules can be installed in the router at anytime.

Bexel has also acquired Evertz’s 5601MSC Master Sync and Clock Generators, 500 series and 7700 series video and audio DA’s, 7876 VIP16x2 and VIP32x2 multiviewers, HD2014 passport audio video converters plus audio embedders and de-embedders, in addition to Evertz’ MAGNUM Unified Control System.

RTW and Calrec Announce Collaboration at the 2012 NAB Show

RTW TM7 TouchMonitor To Be Integrated Into Calrec’s Range of Digital Audio Consoles

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 19, 2012 — RTW (C1844), a leading manufacturer and distributor of professional audio metering and control devices for studio recording and radio and TV broadcast applications, and Calrec Audio, LTD (C1746), manufacturer of high-quality audio products, are jointly announcing at the 2012 NAB Show that the RTW TM7 TouchMonitor will be fully integrated into Calrec’s line of digital audio consoles.

As a result of this partnership, RTW will provide the OEM version of the TM7 TouchMonitor touch screen loudness meter to be built into Calrec’s full range of digital consoles, including the Apollo, Artemis Shine, Artemis Beam and Artemis Light consoles. The TM7 will be integrated into the upstand of the consoles, providing various metering options. For example, on the Artemis consoles, both single and double meters layouts are available. The benefit of the double meter option (one above the other) is to show moving coil emulation along with a separate vector scope

The TM7 will also be available for retrofitting.

Sound Devices Teams Up with Habitat for Humanity for Deconstruction Project at New Facility

REEDSBURG, WI, APRIL 19, 2012 — Sound Devices (2012 NAB Booth C2546), experts in portable audio and video products for field production, recently relocated and settled into its new 27,000-square-foot U.S. headquarters in Reedsburg, WI. As part of the move, the company made its renovation a community project by donating the front portion of the building to the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.

“The front section of the building was isolated from the rest of the facility, so it was originally in our plans to tear it down,” says Jon Tatooles, managing director of Sound Devices. “However, when I learned that Habitat for Humanity participates in deconstruction projects, it made sense to donate the material and divert it from a local landfill. The volunteers on site were really amazing throughout this venture and we are happy to help others in need.”

After hearing about Habitat for Humanity’s deconstruction projects through a business associate who sits on the board of directors for the Dane County Habitat branch, Sound Devices coordinated the project with the local Sauk and Columbia County affiliate. Bruce Koch, deconstruction and ReStore (Habitat’s ReStore resale outlets sell reusable and surplus building materials to the public) coordinator for the affiliate, conducted an initial visual inspection of the facility in order to determine the types and quantity of materials that were salvageable. Once the project was green lighted, volunteers worked meticulously to deconstruct the entire building over the course of seven days.

Habitat for Humanity is an international organization with local affiliates across the globe that builds housing for low-income working families. The materials collected at the Sound Devices project totaled more than six 30-yard dumpsters of either usable, re-sellable or recyclable materials, including approximately 33 40-foot trusses, 200 2x6s, 80 sheets of 4×8 plywood, 200 studs, siding, insulation, piping, wiring, doors, the furnace and air conditioners. The re-sellable items will be sold in Habitat’s ReStore in nearby Baraboo. The money raised will help Habitat build new houses and pay for overhead expenses at the ReStore.

“For a company like Sound Devices to think outside the box and let us come in to their facility to help others is amazing,” says Koch. “Wonderful things happen when a low-income family has its own home—the children flourish and the parents can better provide—it’s really a great thing to see firsthand. At Habitat, we strive to do everything we can to further that cause. When a local company like Sound Devices can see that vision with us, we’re all happy and everyone benefits.”

RTW Delivers First TM3 TouchMonitor Units to TPC

Swiss Broadcast Service Provider Furnishes Edit Suites with Latest Model from RTW’s TouchMonitor Range

ZURICH, APRIL 18, 2012 – RTW, a leading manufacturer and distributor of professional audio metering and control devices for studio recording and radio and TV broadcast applications, today announced that technology and production center (tpc) in Zurich, Switzerland, has ordered seven TM3 units from RTW’s TouchMonitor range, prior to the official introduction of the product. tpc is the first company to take delivery of the long-awaited entry-level audio meter. Decibel S.A., RTW’s Swiss distributor, supplied the TM3s to the production facility.The company will employ the units in its newly installed edit suites, which will be used primarily for sports programming. tpc ordered the six-channel version of the TM3, as it needs to monitor multiple stereo outputs in parallel.

Alfio Di Fazio, audio-project manager, tpc, ordered the RTW devices long before the actual market launch. “When the larger TM7 and TM9 TouchMonitors were first introduced, the R128 national group and I talked with Michael Kahsnitz, head of engineering at RTW, about a smaller version specifically made for video edit suites,” he says. “The TM3 seems to meet our requirements in this area perfectly.”

tpc is so pleased with the TM3 units that it is considering purchasing more units for its numerous studios, ensuring all of its audio monitoring needs are covered.

The RTW TM3 TouchMonitor enables quick and easy loudness metering. It comprises a display unit featuring a 4.3-inch touch screen for horizontal or vertical use and a separate interface box. The easy-to-learn operating concept allows for fast selection of presets that are configured using the Device DC1 software, which is available for Mac and Windows. In addition to PPM and true-peak instruments, the TM3 offers comprehensive loudness metering in compliance with all globally relevant standards, including EBU R128, ITU BS.1770-2/1771, ATSC A/85 and ARIB. Instruments include single-channel and summing bar graphs, loudness range and numerical displays. The TM3 stereo version handles analog and digital audio, while the TM3-6CH version also supports six-channel digital input (an upgrade option for stereo units is also available).

Data Dock for PIX-CADDY with Thunderbolt Connection

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 18, 2012 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, unveils PIX-DOCK at the 2012 NAB Show (Booth C2546). PIX-DOCK connects drives mounted in a Sound Devices PIX-CADDY to computers equipped with Thunderbolt™ high-speed I/O over a single Thunderbolt cable.<

The PIX-CADDY, which is used to connect SSD volumes to all PIX recorders, is an SSD mounting accessory that also operates as a multi-format interface to attach the SSD to a computer for file transfer and management. With the introduction of the PIX-DOCK, users can now leverage Thunderbolt’s fast transfer speeds between drives and computers. Thunderbolt offers up to 10 Gbps interconnection speeds, making the file copying of large-capacity drives fast and easy. When using fast storage drives, its high throughput allows realtime playback of multiple streams of high-data-rate video.

The PIX-DOCK provides both power and data over a single cable and is compatible with SATA drives. PIX-DOCK includes a six-foot Thunderbolt cable that connects to the PIX-CADDY using its eSATAp connection. It also offers a secure, latching connection to PIX-CADDY, and its weighted base prevents sliding on desktop surfaces.

The PIX 220, PIX 240 and PIX 260 record directly to QuickTime using Apple’s ProRes or Avid’s DNxHD codecs. Since PIX recorders use ProRes and DNxHD, files recorded in the field can be used directly in post production, making the workflow simple and fast. The PIX 240 and PIX 260 add even more flexibility, with their time code, sync generator, and simultaneous SDI and HDMI outputs.
