SSL Duality SE Consoles Drive Degree Programs at Miami Dade College

Two new consoles installed for film and recording programs at North and Kendall Campuses

MIAMI, FL – The School of Entertainment & Design Technology (SEDT) at Miami Dade College (MDC) has chosen Solid State Logic Duality SE Consoles to drive both film and recording degree programs at its North and Kendall Campus studios. MDC chose Duality having had a positive experience with an SSL AWS 900 installed in 2010 in the North Campus recording studio. Miami Dade has installed the two new Duality consoles to provide students with the most advanced analogue platform available for music, Foley, voice-over and sound stage recording, while offering a sophisticated, integrated DAW controller. The new North Campus facility is purpose-built for the film program, with the Kendall Campus recording studio receiving a major facelift.

“We are a learning institution that competes with other institutions that teach sound recording,” says Duane Summers, studio manager for Miami Dade College, Kendall Campus. “SSL is the industry standard, so it made competitive sense for us to go with two Duality consoles. Another deciding factor was that Duality offers a seamless combination of analogue signal flow with an integrated DAW controller, all put nicely together in one neat package. Duality was the best choice to meet the academic needs of our students across all sound recording disciplines.”

The Duality at the North Campus is the centerpiece of a new hybrid, dual control room sound studio, built to round out the program offerings for SEDT’s film program. The larger Duality room shares a soundstage which doubles as a classroom, with the other, smaller, DAW controller-based control room. The complex includes a complete Foley stage, an overdub booth and a piano booth that are acoustically isolated from the main stage so that the studio complex can be used for two projects simultaneously. The second Duality resides in the recently upgraded, high-end music recording studio at the Kendall Campus.

“Our experience with Duality at the rebuilt Kendall studio complex has been grand,” states Summers. “The install and training went very smoothly and this was important as we literally installed the console in the middle of the semester. Those students got the rare opportunity to watch the commissioning of an SSL console as a part of their coursework. Duality is now our icing on the cake for the great program that SEDT offers. Everybody loves the console.”

From a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Film, Television & Digital Production to an Associate in Science degree in Music Business, Creative Production, the MDC School of Entertainment & Design Technology integrates multi-discipline training for each program. Film or TV Production majors, for example, will spend time learning about sound recording using Duality in the more advanced coursework for a well-rounded educational experience.

“We really like Duality as a teaching tool because it addresses every aspect of production a student will encounter in the real world,” explains Summers. “Duality also has a great, crystal clear sound quality, so the students can really hear the difference between microphones or EQ settings. Also, when a student mixes a project, Duality seems to glue the mix together. As good as a mix may sound, once processed though the master bus compressor, everything really sonically pops. Duality also helps the instructor because everything needed for capture and mix can be done from the centre of the console. Students can crowd around and see what processes need to be done.”

Pacific Television Center Los Angeles Upgrades Master Control Room And Studios As Part Of Complete HD Facility Initiative

Improvements at New York and London Branches Support Global Renovation Plan

LOS ANGELES, CA, MARCH, 28, 2012 – Pacific Television Center (PacTV), a Los Angeles-based independent global transmission and production company, recently completed a major renovation of its master control room (MCR) in Los Angeles, significantly enhancing the company’s monitoring and transmission capabilities. As a result of installing five new workstations-the old MCR staffed just two-and a total of 12 screens, the redesign has enabled PacTV to increase the number of feeds it monitors from 64 to 162, with the company projecting it will monitor 240 feeds once the monitoring wall is fully populated later this year.

“Over the last few years, our client roster has grown significantly worldwide, and along with it, our need for increased staff and monitoring resources,” says Richard Neri, president, Pacific Television Center. “Moreover, this redesign has created a very functional space in which our team can collaborate more effectively on multiple projects.”

The redesign of the MCR also features new custom-made consoles by High Tech Furnishings and multiple Evertz 7867VIPA multi-image display processors. In addition, PacTV will now be able to monitor its feeds utilizing four new quality-control stations, which has made a big difference in productivity. Finally, PacTV installed a new OmniTek high-definition waveform scope that also measures Dolby E streams.

As part of the entire build-out of the facility, which is designed by Robert Ward & Associates, PacTV recruited Veneklasen Associates to design the acoustics in two of the three studios in Los Angeles. The studios have been fully upgraded to HD, soundproofed with new acoustical treatments and equipped with new Sony HXC100K HD cameras. Moving forward, architect Robert Ward has been commissioned to establish and maintain consistent design across all PacTV facilities.

PacTV is also in the process of upgrading studios in London and New York. In London, the company is currently building a second HD-capable studio, which will be ready in time to support its broadcast clients, for coverage of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration in June and the major global sporting event that kicks off in July. The new studio will be equipped with a Sony HXC100K HD camera. To support these upgrades, the studio control room in London is also being enhanced, under the guidance of AbsoluteCad.

PacTV New York is also reconfiguring its MCR, in order to support a more collaborative work environment. Upgrading from one to three workstations and installing a new monitoring console has allowed for more efficiency and streamlining of daily duties. The New York facility has also graduated to a fully HD-capable, 96 x 96 router, along with a second studio, makeup room and a new green room. Mancini Duffy Architecture is overseeing the New York project, while SIA Acoustics is handling the acoustical treatments in the new studio.

“Communication is at the heart of our business and PacTV is fully committed to providing our clients with the best possible service in all of our facilities,” adds Neri. “In order to achieve this, all three of our MCRs communicate using a Trilogy intercom system. In addition, we have four more intercoms deployed at clients and vendors in Auckland, New Zealand, and Sydney, Australia. It is our goal to create a seamless broadcasting community around the globe.”

DPA Upgrades Popular 4099 Instrument Mic Series To d:vote At Prolight + Sound 2012

FRANKFURT, GERMANY, MARCH 21, 2012 – DPA Microphones is pleased to announce the unveiling of its new d:vote range of instrument microphones at Prolight + Sound 2012 (Hall 8, Stand F22). Building on the success of the highly acclaimed 4099 instrument clip mic series, d:vote has been enhanced with a new shock mount to provide even better absorption.

DPA’s original instrument microphones have been widely embraced by international artists including Sting, Randy Brecker, Wayne Shorter and Bobby Ricketts. They are also indispensable tools for gigging musicians around the world, who appreciate the level at which the microphones can accurately capture their acoustic tone. In addition to the shock absorption upgrades, the new d:vote instrument microphones now feature a cable available in a heavy duty 1.55 mm and 2.2 mm diameter versions, which can now be detached from the end of the gooseneck. Further flexibility is available through an extension unit for the gooseneck supplied with the mic, which lengthens its neck by 50 percent. “After a long introduction, the 4099s have more than tripled the amount of microphones sold in the last two years and the curve is only going up,” says DPA CEO Christian Poulsen. “We have listened to what our users want and the new improvements make it even more durable and less sensitive to noise. The new extension unit brings maximum value to demanding applications, achieving just the right sound from the instrument.”

d:vote condenser mics feature supercardioid polar patterns for highly uniform off-axis frequency response and superior gain-before-feedback. Capable of handling high sound pressure levels, these microphones live up to DPA’s pedigree of breathtaking clarity and richness.

Despite its tiny, discreet size and lightweight design, d:vote is rugged and stable, while the versatile and extendable gooseneck provides stable positioning. The mics can easily be unclipped and repositioned or moved to another instrument with only one hand. d:vote’s microphone mounting system is designed to be extremely gentle, never marring the finish of an instrument.

The MicroDot connector and more than 35 DPA adapters ensure compatibility with just about any wireless system, and the product can also be used as a standard 48V phantom powered microphone via its supplied XLR connector.
