Aviom Personal Mixers Take The Stage During New World Center’s Pulse Nightclub Events

MIAMI, NOVEMBER 4, 2011—Long before the curtains were first raised in Miami Beach’s New World Center, expectations were high that it would be a spectacular educational and performance facility, home to the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy. While bringing to life its mission of becoming a destination for creativity and inspiration, the Center also debuted as a cultural icon, introducing Pulse, a unique spin on the orchestral experience within a nightclub setting. To help performers get the best monitor mixes in a hall where the acoustics are quite reverberant, Pro Sound and Video, a Miami-based company that specializes in providing high quality, technology solutions for audio, video, theater, club and broadcast projects, equipped the New World Center with an Aviom Pro16® personal mixing system.Aviom Pro16 Mixer New World Center Pulse Stage

Early in the New World Center’s first season, Aviom’s Personal Mixers played an important role on stage in performances by the prestigious New World Symphony and even more so during Pulse performances, when the concert hall transitioned into a nightclub and New World Symphony Fellows and a classically-trained DJ, Mason Bates, shared the stage.

“The intent behind the New World Center was to create the most technically sophisticated concert hall in North America,” says Brad Gallagher, managing director, Pro Sound and Video. “In a symphonic building, with such a long RT60, the sound that engineers hear from a reference monitor is going to be vastly different from what the musicians are hearing on stage. With so many elements taking place at once, the Aviom Personal Mixers are an absolutely ideal solution.”

Since the hall was designed with a NC-15 noise criterion, there is a virtually pure environment for the natural acoustics of the room. Though beautiful to listeners, the acoustics do pose some issues when monitoring. “The nominal reverb time of the room is 1.5 seconds, so when the Aviom A-16II Personal Mixers are used with headphones or in-ears, it allows us to totally eliminate any unnecessary stage volume, while keeping our options flexible for on-stage performances,” says Alan Miller, New World Center production technician and audio specialist.

Aviom Mixers New World Center PulseMiller introduced the Aviom personal mixers to the performers for the very first Pulse show, giving each musician the option to customize personal mixes, as they were tasked with performing live in this unique setting. Aviom A-16II Personal Mixers helped musicians overcome the challenges brought on by the instruments, ambiance and unique distances between performers, as DJ Mason Bates and the performers were located on stage lifts, while other performers were located on the hall’s satellite stages.

“During the first performance, three percussionists played a rather difficult piece on Djembes (skin-covered drums played with bare hands) that were positioned on different performance platforms throughout the hall,” says Miller. The platforms surround the stage with about 50 feet separating each and are between audience seating areas. “We recognized that the percussionists would need to hear each other clearly while competing with the late-night crowd noise, so Aviom A-16II Personal Mixers were the perfect solution. We also provided an A-16II to the orchestra conductor,” adds Miller.

The music selected for the venue’s second Pulse event required a completely different setup, with two soloists playing on separate performance platforms in exact synchronization with the full orchestra on stage. “The distance time delay and reverb would not allow us to do this setup without any monitoring, so this time I pulled out the A-16CS Control Surfaces to be used in conjunction with our A-16R Personal Mixers that are rack mounted in our monitor console desk unit,” says Miller. “The DigiCo D1 allowed us to send the signal to these A-16R units and then the output of the A-16R can be routed back to the console so I could send it to our wedge monitors.”

Designed for flexibility by audio consultants Acoustic Dimensions and Sonitus, the New World Center’s system includes Aviom A-16D Pro A-Net® Distributors that route to an RJ-45 patch panel at the hall’s backstage left audio racks. The patch panel then has A-Net lines that run virtually everywhere in the performance hall. The stage consists of 10 electro-mechanical stage lifts, with each lift having anywhere from one to four floor pockets that allow the crew access to audio, video and electrical panels attached to each stage. Cat-5 cabling that originates at the patch panel is run to each floor pocket, allowing Miller and the audio team to position the Aviom units just about anywhere on or off stage as needed for the performers, including the performance platforms that have full audio/data connectivity. The main DigiRack that is shared by the consoles has an Aviom D-16c A-Net Card that allows the audio team to take up to 16 outputs that are assigned on the consoles and send them through the Aviom system.

AURALEX TAKES A BITE OUT OF ACOUSTICS AT THE BIG FISH GRILL

GLEN MILLS, PENNSYLVANIA – Auralex Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, recently ordered up some acoustics at the Big Fish Grill, a premier casual-dining seafood restaurant with locations in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Both feature Auralex T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles to help absorb additional sound energy throughout the busy, noisy restaurants, making speech intelligibility clearer.

In the Big Fish Grill’s original location in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Auralex’s T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles were sporadically installed throughout the ceiling of the establishment. When it came time to open up a second location, the owners of restaurant chain called upon Steve Taylor of MusicPro Marketing, an independent sales and marketing firm representing music and professional audio/video equipment manufacturers, to acoustically treat the new location. As an Auralex rep, Taylor once again recommended Auralex’s T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles for the new space, but this time throughout the entire ceiling.

A total of 350 black T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles were installed throughout the space. The black ceiling serves as an indiscrete blank canvas that does not distract from the nautical theme of the restaurant, as it features several large hanging fish, suspended from the ceiling.

Drop-tile ceiling tiles are traditionally used for visually blocking unsightly HVAC systems, wiring, insulation and other obstacles above the grid work. Unfortunately, most ceiling tiles do not meet the acoustical requirements for critical listening environments. Many of the commercially available ceiling tiles are fairly reflective at low, mid and high frequencies.

Auralex T-Coustic Ceiling Tiles are a full line of fiberglass ceiling tiles that offer great aesthetic qualities with absorption coefficients that are 20 to 45 percent higher than standard ceiling tiles. The two standard sizes are 23.875″ x 23.875″ and 23.875″ x 47.875″ for standard 2′x2′ or 2′x4′ grids. Each panel is 1″ thick and is supplied with a fabric scrim on the face of the panel. Standard colors are white and black, with custom colors available upon request.

Founded in 1997 by brothers Norman and Eric Sugrue, Delaware’s Big Fish Grill has become one of the premier spots for casual dining in the region. A unique blend of original recipes, must-have favorites and affordable prices have resulted in a dedicated following, one that has earned the restaurant numerous “Best Seafood at the Beach” awards by Delaware Today magazine. Due to the overwhelming success of the original, the Sugrue brothers opened the new Pennsylvania location earlier this year.

KBS KUWAIT UPGRADES FOUR STUDIOS WITH SOLID STATE LOGIC C10 HD COMPACT BROADCAST CONSOLES

C10 HD Streamlines Production While Improving Quality

KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT – The Kuwait Broadcast Service (KBS), a major radio broadcasting and performance facility operated by the Ministry of Information (MOI) for the government of Kuwait, has recently upgraded four studios with Solid State Logic C10 HD Compact Broadcast Consoles. MOI/KBS encompasses nine radio stations, five drama studios, four editing suites, three live music/rehearsal spaces and one large concert hall. The C10 HD consoles are part of a general move into digital production systems for the facility and are used for radio production, capturing drama presentations and editing.SSL C10 KBS Kuwait

“KBS is in the process of redesigning its studios with newer digital technology and we wanted to have the latest and best equipment to be ready for HD production and 5.1 transmission,” says Eng. Hameed Khajah, engineering director of OB and studios departments at MOI/KBS. “The C10 gives us the power to work more efficiently now and is ready to take us into the future with surround production. The C10 fits in perfectly with our move into all digital systems by giving us a powerful platform with robust feature set in a small form factor that is perfect for our re-designed studio control rooms.”

Two of the C10 consoles, each with a 24-fader frame addressing 64 DSP channels, are installed in the On-Air First Radio Channel studio and On-Air Super Station Studio to handle live-to-air radio programming for 5 different Radio Kuwait stations. Programming includes This is Kuwait, a daily live interview, news and information show; dedicated talk and news shows; programs featuring English and European music, programs focused on Kuwaiti youth supporting education and exposure to Kuwaiti heritage, as well as religious programming. The edit and drama studio consoles have 16 Faders addressing 64-channels of DSP. All consoles feature Alpha-Link and 8-RMP units. The edit and production studios also have MadiXtreme 64 I/O for DAW use.

“The C10 consoles have changed the way we approach our production workflow for our on-air, drama and ProTools® and Nuendo editing studios,” continues Eng. Khajah. “For example, the C10 gives us the power to have the settings for each program stored for instant recall. This really helps our workflow as it saves setup time. We also store the EQ and dynamics settings for the main talent, so we can now maximize the amount of time we spend optimizing the audio quality of the invited guests. User-defined presets combined with the Dialogue Automix feature that automates faders for fast-paced panel programs makes this type of production easy to accomplish. In every way, the C10 has made our production experience better.”

By using four C10 consoles supporting critical production areas, moving from studio to studio is easy on the engineering staff with the added bonus of being able to move Presets between consoles. In this way, work can be efficiently continued or completed in any C10 control room without the need to reconvene settings or appropriate patching for outboard gear.

“The C10 console establishes an effective environment for sound engineering,” states Eng. Khajah. “Our engineers enjoy being more creative by having the time to craft sound. The C10 gives us a grand synergy because it is easy to interact with the console to get superior production results, while the console gives back excellent sound quality and faster workflow. The C10 also fits in with our green initiatives, a part of our government’s mandate, as the consoles are completely self-contained, generate little heat and have low current draw. The C10 lets us do things we could not do in the past.”

BEXEL’S CUSTOM EQUIPMENT RENTAL PACKAGE, ENGINEERING SUPPORT AND TECHNICAL SERVICES BRINGS POT OF GOLD TO BIG BREAK IRELAND

KILDARE, IRELAND, OCTOBER 31, 2011Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group’s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, supplied a state-of-the-art equipment package for the 16th season of the Golf Channel’s reality show, Big Break. Held in Kildare, Ireland, this season, the large, overseas reality production also took advantage of Bexel’s expert engineering support and technical services. Bexel has been providing equipment and services for Big Break since season four.

“As with any large scale production abroad, this shoot presented many logistical and technical challenges,” says Irene Farrelly, senior productions manager, Golf Channel Original Productions. “Mark Alexander and the Bexel team overcame each one with professionalism and the urgency needed. I have worked with Mark for several years on a variety of shoots, and their work and equipment is first class.”

The Big Break show concept pits highly skilled golfers against each other in a variety of challenges that test their physical skills and mental toughness. During Big Break Ireland, one contestant is eliminated each week, with the last person standing crowned Big Break champion.

“We have enjoyed a long, successful relationship providing broadcast rental equipment and technical services and support for the Golf Channel, and look forward to working on its Big Break series each season,” says Mark Alexander, Bexel senior account executive/technical consultant. “The Big Break productions always call for an extensive amount of equipment, we have to make sure the gear is available well in advance so our engineers can set things up to the Golf Channel’s specifications. This project also required multiple voltage adapters and converters for various power configurations in Ireland. Providing ‘weather protective’ gear for the equipment was also a must, especially with the ever-changing climate conditions in Ireland.”

For Big Break Ireland, Bexel provided seven Sony PDW-F800 XDCAM HD cameras set to 1080/29.97p. The PDW-F800 camera provides extremely high-quality HD recordings and data rates up to 50Mbps using MPEG-2 4:2:2 compressions. The accompanying HD lenses include the Fujinon HA42x9.7, HA22x7.6 and HA13x4.5 lenses. Bexel chose the Fujinon HA42x9.7 mid-range lens for its ability to provide better coverage on the longer incoming approach shots to the green. In addition, Bexel also provided TV Logic LQM-171W 17-inch LCD HD monitors, Ambient controllers with ACL-203CT tri-level sync lockit boxes and Litepanels camera lights.

“Bexel has been an integral part of my business for the past 20 years. As an engineer in charge, or a DP, I have always felt that Bexel had my back,” says Stef Butler, technical manager/engineer in charge, Golf Channel Original Productions. “Bexel was with us every step of the way—from outlining what we needed, creative thinking regarding gear choices, having the prep in terrific order and carnet preparation—I can’t see how anyone would attempt a show of this magnitude with any other rental house.”

Filmed at The K Club in Kildare, Ireland, Big Break Ireland takes place on the resort’s two championship golf courses—the Palmer Smurfit Course and the Palmer Ryder Cup Course. In addition to hosting the 2006 Ryder Cup, The K Club has also hosted 13 European Opens on the European Tour.
