METRIC HALO ON THE ROAD WITH RISING HIP-HOP STARS MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS

macklemore_ryan.JPGSEATTLE, WASHINGTON – MAY 2012: The team of rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis is making some of the most forward-thinking hip-hop music on the planet. Lewis’ irresistible beats and music form a sophisticated backdrop for Macklemore’s tight rhymes and deceptively easy delivery. Macklemore’s subject matter – drug addiction, consumerism, race, and other weighty themes – resonates with an authenticity that deftly sidesteps clichés to bathe familiar subjects in a fresh light. Lewis, who also handles many of the engineering duties for the duo, recently committed to purchasing a Metric Halo ULN-2 preamplifier/interface so that they could cut studio-quality tracks for their forthcoming album while on the road.

“I’m in the middle of producing a full-length LP with rapper Macklemore,” said Lewis. “I needed a small unit that could deliver audio quality worthy of our debut LP. The goal is for Macklemore to be able to record at home or on the road, tracking vocals wherever he wants or needs to.” Lewis learned about Metric Halo through online research and discussions with audio engineers in their hometown of Seattle.

“One of the largest consumer products for introductory home recording is the two-channel USB or FireWire interface,” he continued. “Almost every company has their own version. Nevertheless, there honestly wasn’t a lot out there that could compete with the ULN-2. Finding high-quality AD/DA conversion is hard, and finding high-quality AD/DA conversion together with fantastic preamps is almost impossible. The Metric Halo ULN-2 was exactly what we needed. It alone could match the quality of vocals we’re tracking in the studio.”

As an active member of the Seattle music scene, Macklemore earned a hometown following early on. But it was with his 2004 release Welcome to Myspace – which was heavily hyped by the then-new social networking site – that Macklemore earned respect and an eager following at the national and international levels. Success begat success, but in combination with a self-avowed drug problem, it also doused the creative flame that had committed so many fresh rhymes and ideas to paper. Macklemore languished for years before a one-month stay at rehab gave him the sobriety and creative perspective he so desperately needed. Now on a mission to make good on his promising start and with three successful post-rehab solo albums, Macklemore has joined forces with Ryan Lewis, and the two are poised to take the hip-hop world by storm with the forthcoming release.

Taking the long view, Lewis cited Metric Halo’s dogged commitment to future-proofing its equipment via upgrades as another excellent reason to go with the ULN-2. “Metric Halo is a company that is focused on the future of pro audio and that’s why I’m so excited to be working with their products,” he said. Later in the year, Lewis and Macklemore plan to follow up the ULN-2 with an eight-channel ULN-8, Metric Halo’s flagship product, for use in their studio.

ABOUT METRIC HALO Now based in the sunny city of Safety Harbor, Florida, Metric Halo provides the world with high-resolution metering, analysis, recording and processing solutions with award-winning software and future-proof hardware.

API TOUTS TENTH 1608 IN ARGENTINA

JESSUP. MARYLAND – MAY 2012: API marked the tenth 1608 delivery to Argentina with the installation of the console at Studio Fort Music. Sold by SL Audio, API’s sole distributor in Argentina, the console joined the studio’s digital platform to create a completely analog recording set-up.

Studio Fort Music’s manager Oscar Gimenez Plett has been active in the Argentinian music scene for some time. He began his engineering career in the 1970s at Studio DISCOS CBS. He then moved on to Sandro’s Studio, Studio Greengo, Ion Studios, Pulstar Studios, Digiart Studios and Del Absto al Pasto before landing at Fort Music.

“API is the mixer brand which I learned to work with,” Plett said. “Once I tried the new 1608, I saw that it has the same audio dimension and quality as the API consoles had back in 1974, when I used more

METRIC HALO’S NEW PRODUCTION BUNDLE USED BY GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING ENGINEER GARY NOBLE

gary_noble.JPGSAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA: Gary Noble is an adept manager of a Twitter feed, a Google+ account, and a blog that will resonate with anyone in the pro audio recording industry. But despite, or perhaps because of his active Internet presence, Noble maintains a busy schedule of recording and mixing sessions. In addition to a long list of highly-respected artists who haven’t yet made it to “household name” status, Noble has worked with Amy Winehouse, Ricky Martin, Estelle, and Whitney Houston, often with producer Salaam Remi. His work with Amy Winehouse earned him a Grammy Award. As evidenced by his informative blog, Noble is a passionate advocate of the tools and techniques that deliver successful recordings. Metric Halo products, including ChannelStrip 3 and the Production Bundle collection of plug-ins, SpectraFoo signal analysis software, and the eighteen-channel 2882 interface, have proven themselves worthy of Noble’s respect.

Harley Davidson Showroom Transforms and Puts New Life Into Church with NEXO System

BUENA PARK, Calif.—When LifePointe Christian Church in Elk Grove, California was looking for a sound system to compliment their new location, a converted Harley Davidson showroom, they turned to the expertise of CCI of Olympia, Washington. Project manager, David McLain, recommended a NEXO PS15 system for the 400-seat church that consists of three PS15s, one CD18 and a 4×4 NXAMP.

“Pastor Chris Delfs sought out a new location where they would not only own their space but could create a unique, new culture,” states McLain. “They weren’t looking for a NEXO system per se, but were looking for good advice.” At only 60’ deep, with less than 20’ of trim, a line array would not have been the best tool, whereas, the asymmetrical horn pattern of a PS15 reaches the back rows with ease.”

“David actually discouraged a line array approach in this case, and if you look at how much the HVAC and lighting impacts the trim height, the PS solution was much better,” notes Steve Armstrong, PROS Inc., independent rep firm for NEXO.

“I’d been hearing a lot of talk about NEXO speakers over the past few years,” and have listened to various models and I was impressed enough to recommend them for a couple of rooms, particularly given the outstanding support I’ve been receiving from Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems,” says McLain. I didn’t really know the extent of the NEXO lineup until I had opportunity to listen critically and extensively to their whole selection of speakers at a demo at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center in California. The Cerritos Center is an awesome building. We used their beautiful main room to try out the NEXO speakers. I spent the first demo day designing speaker systems for rooms using various software, and I liked the way the NEXO speakers worked in the planning, and also liked what I saw in the computer models. The NS-1 software was easy to work with, so I imported some real-world rooms, like LifePointe, that I’d been working on. It appeared the NEXO PS Series would provide excellent coverage.”

“I have to admit, there’s a fair bit of skeptic in me,” McLain says. “A box that promises a rectangular coverage pattern had better do more than just advertise well! It needs to offer an actual rectangular coverage pattern. And more importantly, it needs to sound good! In the next day’s listening tests, I measured 112 dB at the back of the listening room, and I have to say, it sure didn’t feel like 112 dB. In fact, it didn’t sound like a PA playing. It sounded like a woman was right there singing to me. Yamaha brought in a live jazz drummer and they just sounded louder, like there was no PA in between. Even the little NEXO PS8 two-way sounded way bigger than its small size. And, all of the subwoofers for the line arrays – which were shaking my pant legs at 100’ – are cardioid subs. Even during the “fairly loud” cuts (think aggressive Sunday morning volume), we could easily hold a conversation on the stage behind the subwoofers.”

Armstrong added that Pastor Delfs was appreciative of CCI’s insistence on NEXO. “David has provided LifePointe with five previous systems and each one has progressed in terms of quality and capabilities.”

“Every Sunday, one of our congregation members emotes about the system, which is so significant to my passion to lead people to a better way, that I’m thrilled beyond words,” states Pastor Delfs. “I love the NEXO sound system. David and CCI hit it out of the ballpark.”

It’s presented in an easy-to-read, conversational tone, and includes more than 400 figures and photos augmenting the text.

The book goes far beyond merely explaining how audio “works.” It brings together the concepts of audio, aural perception, musical instrument physics, acoustics, and basic electronics, showing how they’re intimately related. Describing in great detail many of the practices and techniques used by recording and mixing engineers, the topics include video production and computers. Rather than merely showing how to use audio devices such as equalizers and compressors, Ethan Winer explains how they work internally, and how they are spec’d and tested.

Most explanations are platform-agnostic, applying equally to Windows and Mac operating systems, and to most software and hardware. TheAudioExpertbook.com, the companion website, has audio and video examples to better present complex topics such as vibration and resonance.

France Television Places A Substantial Order For Jünger Audio Loudness Processing Equipment

The decision by France’s CSA (Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel) to link the EBU’s Loudness Recommendation R128 to its own audio-visual legislation is now focusing the attention of French broadcasters on purchasing loudness processing equipment that complies with the EBU R128 standard.

One manufacturer that has already benefited is German dynamics specialist Jünger Audio, which recently won a significant order for its loudness processing equipment from the French public broadcaster France Television.

Jünger Audio’s Managing Director Peter Poers says: “Our EBU R128-compliant loudness processing equipment has already been installed at every major broadcast facility in Germany and Switzerland, and we are delighted that France’s public broadcaster has also chosen to endorse our technology. Broadcasters have recognised the benefit of using our proprietary LEVEL MAGIC™ adaptive control algorithm and like the fact that it allows them to adjust the audio level from any source at any time, with no pumping, breathing or distortion. As a result it has become the algorithm of choice for line and real time processing.”

France Television is a state-owned company that consists of a number of channels including France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5 and France Ô. The broadcaster, which is primarily funded by revenue from television license fees, is highly influential with more than 40% of the French population watching its programming every day. As a public broadcaster it is firmly committed to providing high quality news, sports and entertainment programming that reflects a diversity of views.

The order France Television has placed with Jünger Audio is for a total of 73 loudness processors – 22 D*AP LM4 four-channel units and 51 D*AP LM2 two channel units. These are now being rolled out to France Television facilities and will eventually cover all Paris-based channels, plus all 23 regions, with each region having one Jünger Audio processor for its main transmission path and another for back-up.

France’s CSA decision to link with EBU R128 means that previously unenforceable laws on loudness can now be better defined and therefore enforced. This will protect viewers from the unpleasant and unpopular lurches in the volume of programmes and adverts that have resulted worldwide in so many complaints over the years.

In order to comply with the new law, French broadcasters must now ensure that all production and distribution equipment they use is compliant with EBU R128. They must also manage audio correctly and ensure that all material provided by production houses also complies with the new ruling. The new law is being introduced in three phases: normalization of short programmes from 1 January 2012, of live programmes by June 2012, and of all programmes by the end of 2012.

PRISM SOUND OPENS A NEW EUROPEAN SALES AND DISTRIBUTION OFFICE IN GERMANY

Prism Sound, manufacturer of premium-quality test and measurement instruments, audio interfaces and processors and for the recording and broadcast markets, has opened a European Sales and Distribution office in Munich, Germany.

Operating under the Prism Media Products Ltd banner and covering the territories of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the new office will handle all Prism Sound test and measurement, music recording and production products including the dScope Series III audio test instrument, ADA-8XR multichannel converters and the Orpheus FireWire interface.

Bernard Nocker, formerly Sales Manager for Prism Sound products at DIME Medientechnik GmbH, has been appointed to head the Munich office.

He says: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to develop Prism Sound’s business in these territories. Audio is my passion and I have hands-on experience of using Prism Sound’s products, which makes it much easier to explain their features and benefits to potential customers. I also believe that this new arrangement will allow me to concentrate on developing much closer relationships with existing customers and explore new markets for Prism Sound, particularly in the test and measurement arena.”

The new structure will enable Prism Sound to more effectively develop resellers and representatives in the German-speaking market and the company is now actively seeking retailer partnerships for its music recording and production products, as well as closer relationships with industrial test system integrators and supply chain companies.

Graham Boswell, Sales Director for Prism Sound, says: “In 2011, Prism Sound’s sustained export performance won the company the prestigious UK Queens Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category. The German speaking market was a significant factor in winning this award and has been important to the company for 20 years, having first been developed by FFD GmbH in the early 1990’s. More recently distribution has been handled by DIME Medientechnik GmbH and the business has grown considerably over the period.

“Our decision to open the Munich office was based on a desire to conduct closer relationships with our key customers and to be more responsive to local market conditions. The change will bring immediate benefits to our customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the form of a new Euro price structure. Former inter-company pricing has been replaced with a simpler structure and, despite the recent gains in the GBP/EUR rate, the new Euro pricing will be slightly lower than previously.”

Prism Sound and DIME have agreed a swift and amicable handover, with DIME now completing only specific orders already in hand. All new orders will be handled directly by Prism Sound. Warranty and service for all products formerly sold by DIME or by its predecessor SDI will be handled directly by Prism Sound through the Munich office.

Sales of Prism Sound’s SADiE product line continue to be handled by For-Tune GmbH. The new arrangements in Germany will mean closer co-operation between the two companies and offer a range of new marketing opportunities for the SADiE and Prism Sound brands.

Bernhard Nocker can be contacted at Tel: +49 176 27927901. Email: Bernhard.Nocker@prismsound.com. Prism Sound’s Munich office is located at Trappentreustr. 5, 80339 München, Germany.
