Stars Shine For AES – Special Appearance by Judy Collins

Discussion Will Focus On New “Bohemian” CD

NEW YORK: AES Convention Chair Jim Anderson has announced another major coup in attracting iconic artists to participate in the upcoming 131st Convention. On Friday, Oct. 21, from 10:30AM to11:30AM, internationally celebrated writer/performer Judy Collins will participate in a rare one-on-one interview with music journalist Jason King. The discussion will focus on “Bohemian,” Collins’ upcoming CD release.

It was once said that “If amethysts could sing, they would sound like Judy Collins.” Indeed, Collins has been a folk and pop music icon and a powerful influence on several generations of musicians and listeners. Her ethereal performances and top-selling recordings of songs like “Both Sides Now” and “Send in the Clowns” ultimately helped make songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Stephen Sondheim become household names.

Now in the fifth decade of her career, Collins is about to more

HOPEWELL JUNCTION, NEW YORK – OCTOBER 2011: Douglas Cuomo’s remarkable aptitude for creating engaging music across genres has earned him renown in the concert halls and on the operatic and theatrical stages of the world. To appreciate the tremendous scope of Cuomo’s work, it may be sufficient to note that his work has been commissioned by both Chanticleer and Britney Spears. But Cuomo also maintains a prolific career as a composer for film and television, where his ability to create genuine music of any style is a rare and valuable commodity. Among his credits are literally hundreds of themes, scores, and incidental music for network television (including Sex and the City, Homicide: Life on the Streets, Committed), film (including In the Weeds, Naked in New York, and Lie Down with Dogs), and documentaries (including Crazy Love, America’s River, and National Geographic Explorer). Part of what explains Cuomo’s high volume of more

Milford, NH, October 12, 2011 – Earthworks Microphones’ hand-built SR20 cardioid condenser microphone has been updated with a metal mesh windscreen more traditionally associated with vocal microphones.

Community Expands Distributed Design Series with Surface Mount Models

Distributed Design Series Surface Mount Loudspeakers

Community Professional Loudspeakers has expanded the Distributed Design Series of high-performance ceiling-mount loudspeakers with the addition of several new surface-mount models.

The 5-inch DS5 is a two-way compact system, ideal for installations where space is a premium. For larger installations, the 8-inch DS8 provides higher sound pressure levels, higher sensitivity and greater bass extension. The 8-inch DS8SUB subwoofer complements the DS5 and DS8 full-range models with extended low frequency performance for musical applications.

“We’ve received great response on the performance of our Distributed Design Series ceiling-mounted systems, but there are certainly applications where a surface-mounted system is more appropriate,? explains Julia Lee, Community’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “Our new surface-mount DS line is designed to deliver the same voicing and performance as the ceiling models, along with a range of features to make the installer’s job easier and more efficient.?

The DS-Series is equipped with built-in more

ACIR Pro Supports Bennett’s 85th Birthday Bash at The Met

EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J.—Founded in 1883 and now in its 128th season, The Metropolitan Opera is the vibrant home for talented singers, conductors, composers, orchestra musicians, and dancers from around the world. Known as the venue for the world’s greatest voices, The Met recently hosted the 85th birthday celebration of legendary singer, Tony Bennett. Singing at The Met was not only the singer’s birthday gift to himself, but to the sold-out crowd that flocked to the 3800-seat venue’s Lincoln Center address. Guest artists included Elton John, Aretha Franklin, and Alejandro Sanz.

ACIR Professional (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) provided the audio necessary to reinforce the sound at The Met in order to achieve the live sound to which Mr. Bennett has become accustomed. A Yamaha PM5D-EX was the console of choice for long-time Bennett front of house engineer, Tom Young. Young, whose rider preference is a PM5D, said the 5D-EX more

SYMETRIX JUPITER JUMPS BACK IN TIME TO THE SET OF “THE GRADUATE”

thegraduate_church.JPG

LA VERNE, CALIFORNIA – OCTOBER 2011: The iconic 1967 film The Graduate ends with protagonist Benjamin Braddock (famously played by Dustin Hoffman) interrupting the wedding of his true love by banging on the church window from a loft at its rear and screaming her name, just as she is about to kiss her soon-to-be husband. The two elope, ditching the wedding guests and, we presume, society’s suffocating mores. The scene and a number of subsequent scenes of comedic homage (Bubble Boy, Wayne’s World 2) were shot at La Verne United Methodist in La Verne, California. However, for the parishioners of LVUM, such moments of celebrity are but fun anecdotes, and the real life and work of the church is like any other. And like so many other churches, LVUM was suffering from a terrible audio system (installed shortly after the filming of The Graduate!) and there was no video system more

AES 131st Convention Heyser Lecture By John Atkinson

“Where Did The Negative Frequencies Go?”

NEW YORK: 131st AES Convention Chair Jim Anderson (and long time Stereophile reader), has announced that Stereophile Magazine

editor and distinguished musician, recording engineer and audiophile John Atkinson, will present this year’s Richard C. Heyser Lecture. Entitled “Where Did The Negative Frequencies Go?” the lecture will be presented on Friday, October. 21,7:00 pm – 9:00 pm, at NY’s Javits Center.

The title of Mr. Atkinson’s lecture is a metaphor: All real numbers have two roots, yet we routinely discard the negative root on the grounds that it has no significance in reality. When it comes to understanding the perception of music, perhaps some of the things we discard as audio engineers merit further examination. This lecture will cover both audio recording and playback technologies; while it might not offer definitive answers, more

TO ARRAY OR NOT TO ARRAY: DANLEY JERICHO HORNS PROVE TO BE A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR GVSU FOOTBALL STADIUM

lubbers_stadium.JPG

ALLENDALE, MICHIGAN – OCTOBER 2011: With a student body in excess of 24,000, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Allendale, Michigan is a major institution of higher education. Its football team is widely recognized as one of the fiercest competitors in the NCAA’s Division II, and it won the national championship in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. It’s no surprise that football is a very big deal at GVSU, a fact reflected in the high-end accommodations of Lubbers Stadium, the school’s large (by Division II standards) football stadium. Its current capacity of 8,500 is regularly met and often wildly exceeded. At a home opener, over 14,000 fans crammed in to see the GVSU Lakers trounce Ferris State. When the school had finally had enough of Lubbers Stadium’s piecemeal audio system and the innumerable complaints it inspired, they hired ASCOM of Holland, Michigan more

‘ROCK STAR REALTOR’ CHOOSES API 1608 FOR NEW STUDIO

red_horse_studios.JPG

AUSTIN, TEXAS – OCTOBER 2011: One of Automated Processes, Inc.’s renowned 1608 analog consoles has recently been installed at Red Horse ATX Recording Studio – a recording facility owned by Jimmy Thrill Quill. Quill, lead singer of rock group Rattlesnake Shake and Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing fame, said an API 1608 was the perfect console for his studio’s centerpiece.

“Buying the API 1608 from Sonic Circus was the most magical thing,” said Quill, who ordinarily works as a realtor for musicians and other celebrities. “API has been every other word for me; I’m getting voicemails all the time from people asking if they can come see the board. API has the reputation and I don’t have to sell it. I can tell you that a lot of the young kids who come out of Pro Tools look at the board like it’s the most beautiful thing on earth. Actually, more
