NEW API 1608 ANALOG CONSOLE INSTALLED IN THE PEABODY CONSERVATORY AT JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND: When the highly-respected Recording Arts and Sciences Program at the Peabody Conservatory/Johns Hopkins University needed to replace an aging console the clear choice was with a new sixteen-channel API Audio 1608 console, largely because of its authentic sound quality and flexibility. The University program, which awards a double-major Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s of Arts in Audio Sciences is the American equivalent of the European Tonmeister training program, and its students benefit from being in close alliance with the JHU’s G.W.C. Whiting School of Engineering, a dedicated faculty of experts and a comprehensive recording studio facility to anchor the program.

Students from the Peabody Conservatory engage in over one thousand performances a year in five venues of varying size, and the Recording Arts and Sciences Program’s studio facilities tie into those venues. Recording arts students record each and every performance under the guidance of faculty members. Beginning students handle simpler stereo recording sessions and assist on more complex sessions, whereas advanced students conduct multi-mic recording sessions for the orchestras, operas and jazz ensembles. Studio D is connected to three of those performance venues, and the new API 1608 console will play a large role in those recording sessions.

The API 1608 is paired with a Pro Tools HD system, which Scott Metcalfe, director of the program, asserts is an excellent hybrid analog/digital combination. “With the API 1608, students can experiment with the full range of possibilities, from in-the-box mixes, to analog summing, to DAW fader control, to full-analog mixing and processing,” he said. “It’s a very flexible design, and we will use it in a lot of different ways.”

Metcalfe and colleagues also look forward to putting the API 1608’s modular design to equally practical use. Each channel features a slot for an API 500-series format module, with eight spare slots that can be patched in. Although API is famous for having pioneered the format and makes many popular 500-series processors, a huge number of established and boutique manufacturers have adopted the 500-series format for their processors as well. Thus, the API 1608 readily accepts third-party processors of tremendous scope and variety.

API is already present in the facility’s other studios. A four-channel API 3124 preamp and a ten-space 500V rack loaded with API equalizers and dynamics processors lend the warm analog “API sound” to Studio A. “In addition to the sonics of API and the flexibility of the 1608, I was also happy to be working with our neighbors,” said Metcalfe, acknowledging the fact that API’s headquarters are a mere twenty-five minutes from the Recording Arts and Sciences Program at the Peabody Conservatory/Johns Hopkins University.

DANLEY SPEAKERS GIVE NATIONWIDE ARENA THE HOME ADVANTAGE

COLUMBUS, OHIO: Nationwide Arena is home to the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League and is host to most of the popular musical acts that travel through Ohio’s capital city. Depending on its configuration, Nationwide Arena can accommodate between 17,000 and 21,000 people, and its recent turn-of-the-millennium design and construction have been widely praised by sports fans and critics. ESPN The Magazine wrote that Nationwide Arena is “the No. 2 stadium experience in professional sports” and the “Ultimate Sports Road Trip” deemed it the greatest arena in the NHL. However, poor sound system coverage had been Nationwide Arena’s dirty little secret since it opened its doors in 2000, and the owners were wisely unwilling to rest on their laurels. Recently, as part of a project that included a massive video upgrade, acoustical consultant Anthony James Partners joined A/V integration firm Daktronics to bring sound reinforcement in line with the rest of the arena’s amenities using efficient, point-source Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and subwoofers.

“Achieving even coverage with conventional loudspeaker technologies is challenging because low-frequency pattern control is seldom very good,” explained Larry Lucas, director of audio engineering with Anthony James Partners. “As a result, system components interfere with each other and create uneven coverage that cannot be rectified with all the processing in the world. Danley Sound Labs’ unconventional designs array seamlessly and deliver excellent pattern control. Moreover, they are inexpensive relative to their output, which provides exceptional return on investment for the client.”

The design called for eight primary clusters distributed equally around the arena. Each cluster contains two Danley SH-96 full-range loudspeakers hard-packed side-by-side and a Danley TH-118 subwoofer. Eight wide-dispersion Danley SM-100 loudspeakers populate a delay ring that provides coverage for Nationwide Arena’s highest tier. Two additional SH-96s cover the ice. Daktronics installed all of the clusters on chain motors for easy servicing and, in the case of those clusters whose positions would interfere with musical acts, easy hoisting.

The rest of the sound reinforcement system benefitted from the retrofit as well. A new Allen & Heath iLive console provides 32 inputs and 16 outputs at the main mix position and 16 inputs and 8 outputs at a remote position. A QSC Q-Sys processor with a 500i core provides input conditioning, routing logic, and modest loudspeaker conditioning. Lab.gruppen PLM-series amplifiers deliver clean power to the Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers. Because both the Q-Sys processing system and the PLM-series amplifiers are network-ready, Daktronics was able to provide the owners with comprehensive monitoring facilities in the A/V control room.

Nationwide Arena’s new high-definition sound reinforcement system complements a new high-definition video system. Its showpiece is a new 43,000 lb. scoreboard that uses nearly sixteen million LEDs to display high-definition video on four 25-foot by 15.5-foot screens. The brilliant scoreboard hangs over center ice. In addition, two “party towers” now use LED technology to project 25-foot by 14-foot video images in the west corners of the arena. Various smaller screens project in upgraded high-definition, and the resolution of the ribbon video board that circles most of the arena is doubled.

“With the Danley system installed, the coverage is close to perfect,” said David Sturzenbecher, audio project engineer with Daktronics. “The design specification called for +/- 4dB throughout, and the system measures closer to +/- 2dB throughout. Because the Danley products deliver so much output, we needed vastly fewer boxes to provide full coverage than we would have used with conventional loudspeakers or line arrays. That let us give them a very high-performance system at a much lower price tag. And not only is the coverage excellent, but so too is the fidelity and low-frequency extension.” Jeff Baumgartner, Nationwide’s in-house A/V engineer stated, “Daktronics design engineers created a virtual arena and accurately predicted the performance throughout the arena. Overall, I am extremely pleased with the system. Coverage is darn near perfect.”

SYMETRIX SOLUS 16 SUPPORTS 7.1 SURROUND SOUND COMPUTER LAB

RENO, NEVADA: The Red House Project is an initiative at Reno High School in Nevada that prepares students for future work with computers, software development, Internet content, CAD, and other computer-based college majors and career paths. It is one of the Washoe County School District’s “Signature Academies,” each of which focuses on a specific in-depth curriculum. Reno students who opt for “Track 1” courses receive training in graphic design, animation, video production, and digital game development using a state-of-the-art computer lab featuring the latest software, 7.1 surround sound technology, and high-definition video projection and capture. Reno-based Innovative Communication Systems (ICS) designed and installed the room’s A/V system with a Symetrix SymNet Solus 16 audio processor to provide affordable signal routing and processing.

As far as the students are concerned, the system begins with banks of fully-loaded Apple Mac Pro computers. In order to effectively wrestle all of their video outputs together with input jacks of every flavor, ICS owner Jeff Bowers and his staff installed an FSR DV-MFSW-94 presentation matrix switcher, which accepts them all and scales every signal to HDMI. From there, signal travels to a pair of school-furnished high-definition video projectors, one for a 16-foot screen on each side of the room. In addition, the room features a massive 25-foot green screen that will allow creative students to perform all manner of video trickery. A blue screen is slated for future installation.

On the audio end of things, output from the computers first hits and Extron SSP 7.1, which effectively pre-processes for 7.1 surround sound. Its output, together with two AudioTechnica wireless microphones, a microphone jack, and stereo output from the FSR switcher, feeds a Symetrix SymNet Solus 16. The SymNet Solus 16 features sixteen mic- or line-level inputs, powerful open-architecture signal processing, eight outputs, and myriad control options. The unit handles all of the system’s customized audio routing, as well as input leveling, loudspeaker management, and volume control. Self-powered QSC K10 loudspeakers handle all seven full-range channels. A Crestron AV2/PRO2 paired with a nine-inch touchscreen provides intuitive, customized user control of both the audio and video signals.

Because audio signal also needed to run to an Atlas amplifier for distribution in adjoining rooms, Bowers had to implement one small work-around. “Instead of using the eighth output for the subwoofer, we used it for the distributed system,” he said. “For the self-powered QSC KW181 subwoofer, we sent signal directly from the Extron unit. It’s one of those situations where you do a cost/benefit analysis. Is it better to buy a larger processor at greater expense or to go for the work-around at less expense? In this case the answer was clear because the subwoofer didn’t need any processing.”

He continued, “The capabilities of the SymNet Solus are fantastic, and the everyone at the company loves its price point. Symetrix’ open-architecture programming is intuitive and comprehensive. We can do all those weird little things that seem to always come up. In addition, we’ve been installing Symetrix processors for a long time, and they’re always dependable.”

STEWARTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA – NOVEMBER 2012: The Eureka Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company serves the greater Stewartstown, Pennsylvania area, and although most of its glory and commitment is deservedly focused on helping neighbors in need, it also boasts a fine social hall that it rents for meetings, wedding receptions, and other events. At over 4,000 square-feet, the social hall can comfortably accommodate up to three hundred people. Until recently, however, its sound reinforcement system delivered poor coverage with marginal fidelity. The company hired Stage Masters, a local AV integration firm, to renovate the room’s A/V system. Stage Masters called on Ashly Audio processing, amplification, and user control to deliver a new system that is perfectly tuned, reliable, and easy to use.

The new system is configured to flexibly meet the needs of all potential users and renters. Shure wireless microphones provide users with a ready and convenient means of amplify voice and are joined by a stereo iPod input, a handful of mic- and line-level input jacks, and the outputs from the video playback system. Shawn Fife, owner of Stage Masters, selected the Ashly ne24.24M processor based on its flexibility. For example, its I/O count is modular, and he initially outfitted the social hall’s ne24.24M with twelve inputs and four outputs. “With the Ashly ne24.24M, I can scale the processing to the needs of a particular job,” said Fife. “Moreover, the unit is network ready, right out of the box, which makes it easy to help clients remotely.”

The Ashly ne24.24M’s modularity was especially useful in this instance, because the officials requested additional output channels after the system was already installed. “I gave them Shure headset microphones for use on bingo nights, among other things,” said Fife. “After they used the system a few times, they changed their minds and wanted to give the caller a monitor channel to listen for bingo calls. Since we were already using all four of the installed output channels, they would have been out of luck were it not for the ne24.24M’s modularity. We were able to meet their request at little expense simply by adding another output card together with a small powered monitor at the caller’s position.”

The original four outputs from the Ashly ne24.24M feed four zones: the entrance hall, the kitchen, main hall left, and main hall right. Because the room is always oriented the same way for video presentations, it was possible to enhance the experience with stereo. A new BenQ SH910 projector gives the room’s users crisp video presentations. Powered by an Ashly ne4250.70 amplifier, Pure Resonance SD4 Lay-In 2×2 drop ceiling speakers give the system impressive punch and clarity with no hot spots. “For the power that they deliver, the Ashly amplifiers are extremely cost-effective,” said Fife. Although he hasn’t yet hooked into them as he has the ne24.24M, the Ashly ne4250.70 is also network-ready right out of the box.

User control of the system is simple and intuitive. An Ashly WR-5 push-button wall remote placed at the front of the room provides volume control of an adjacent microphone jack and computer input, as well as volume control of the system’s four wireless microphones. A second Ashly WR-5 located in the kitchen provides volume control of two adjacent microphone jacks, as well as an adjacent iPod jack.

DANLEY SOUND LABS NEW JERICHO J3 THUNDERS AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY

EAST LANSING, MICHIGAN – NOVEMBER 2012: Football is central to the Michigan State University experience, and nearly 80,000 students and alums pack its Spartan Stadium at home games. Wearing green and white, they arrive electrified with school spirit and roar in a collective voice that, in most cases, drives the MSU Spartans to victory (they win nearly seven out of every ten games that they play at Spartan Stadium). Consistent with its importance to the school’s soul, MSU has regularly expanded the facility since it was first constructed with just 14,000 seats in 1923. This year, Spartan Stadium received a multi-million dollar audio/video systems upgrade, which included the Big Ten’s largest video board (5,412 square feet) at its south end, two auxiliary video boards at its north end, and a sound reinforcement system centered on Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and subwoofers. Apart from fills, just six Danley Jericho J3s provide all of the new system’s full-range coverage with point source fidelity, excellent pattern control, and tremendous return on investment.

Led by Director of Audio Engineering Larry Lucas, Anthony James Partners conceived and designed Spartan Stadium’s new sound reinforcement system. Pro Media/UltraSound installed it under the guidance of Senior Designer and Engineer Demetrius Palavos, who managed the project from the germ of an idea to system commissioning and beyond. “There is definitely a shift occurring at the collegiate level that follows the shift that has been underway at the professional level for some time,” noted Palavos. “Everyone is recognizing that fans are routinely exposed to high-end home entertainment systems and car stereos. Even headphones and iPods offer a full-frequency experience. Such experiences have raised expectations for game day. School officials are now recognizing the need to meet those expectations at the collegiate level.”

At the same time however, budgets remain tight given the stark economic realities of shrinking endowments, state-mandated austerity measures, and charitable gifts that are, well, less charitable than they might have been a few years ago. “Danley systems have a lot to recommend them,” said Lucas, “but their most obvious advantage is an unprecedented return on investment for the client. Danley fidelity and coverage would be excellent at any price, but the actual price tag is tremendously low relative to that kind of performance. We were lucky at MSU because the Danley Jericho J3 had just become available during the designing stages.” Danley Sound Labs pioneered the Jericho series as a point-source alternative to the ubiquitous line array. Using Tom Danley’s unique insights and approaches, the J3 delivers appropriate SPL by distance while completely sidestepping the destructive interference that regularly degrades line array fidelity.

Whereas Spartan Stadium’s previous sound reinforcement system resided in the south end zone, Lucas designed the new system to fire only from the north end. “Previously, additional energy spilled out of the north side and into the community of East Lansing,” explained Lucas. “By placing all of the loudspeaker elements at the north side, we could be sure that any excess energy would spill out onto the campus instead.” Lucas’ design used the two smaller scoreboards on the north side as rigging points for the Danley Jericho J3s and Danley TH-812 subwoofers that support them. The scoreboards are approximately 200 feet apart, and the coverage from each effectively splits the stadium in two. “Firing 500 to 600 feet to the south end zone seating was the most complicated and difficult throw,” said Palavos. “It’s a balancing act to get that right and to still get even coverage and SPL at mid-field, beneath the clusters and the upper deck.”

The system affixed to the northeast scoreboard is a mirror image of that affixed to the northwest scoreboard. On each, a pair of stacked Danley Jericho J3s handle the far throw, whereas a single J3 handles the intermediate throw for the near- and medium-sideline stands. On each scoreboard, three vertically-stacked Danley TH-812 subwoofers collapse the low-frequency beam to provide throw. Ten smaller Danley SH-46 loudspeakers provide fill for areas on the north side of the stadium that are in the “shadows” of the larger boxes, such as very near the scoreboards and under the near balconies.

The system’s front end is straightforward. A Yamaha LS9 provides user control of input source selection and volume. Its output feeds a pair of Peavey MediaMatrix NION processors with Dante cards, which in turn feed HP ProCurve network switches over fiber. At each scoreboard, Lab.gruppen 7000- and 9000-series amplifiers power the Danley TH-812 subwoofers (with crossovers provided by the MediaMatrix NIONs) and the Danley SH-46 full-range loudspeakers. Prior to amplification for the Danley Jericho J3s, signal first enters a Danley DSLP48 processor. “In its processor, Danley has optimized the crossovers and processing necessary to get the very best performance from the J3,” explained Palavos. “You can’t really recreate that in another manufacturer’s processor.” All rack equipment is housed in environmentally-controlled conditions, which include both air-conditioning and heat. “Michigan starts its season humid and hot and ends it cold and snowy,” observed Palavos. An analog backup over fiber allows the system to operate even if the MediaMatrix NION or its Dante network go down.

Although never easy, tuning the new system at MSU was less challenging than it might have otherwise been because the Danley products are honestly specified and sound good out of the box. “In such a complex environment, having a well-designed and engineered product is essential,” said Palavos. “Danley does a good job of engineering up front, which means there is less time required at commissioning to get the system optimized. One of the surprises to the MSU staff was that the quality of their source material needed to be improved! With the previous system, they couldn’t hear what was lacking. But with the new Danley system, it was obvious.” Early reports indicate that the system measures +/- 3dB to each of the nearly 80,000 seats, a testament both to the Danley Jericho J3’s accuracy and to the skill of Lucas, Palavos, and their colleagues.

SYMETRIX SYMNET EDGE DSP INTEGRAL TO HIGH-END HOME THEATER BASS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

MILFORD, CONNECTICUT: When the owner of a high-end home theater sought professional help to update its components and improve its audio quality, he didn’t realize just how far cutting-edge technology and expertise could take things. As part of the process, the owner hired Connecticut-based SH Acoustics to give the room proper absorption and diffusion so as to optimize the cinematic effect. Recognizing that the room’s inherent architectural properties would create tremendous inconsistencies in the bass response from seat to seat, SH Acoustics engineered an eight-subwoofer solution using the powerful open-architecture processing of the Symetrix SymNet Edge system to effectively nullify the impact of the room modes at each of the room’s twelve seats.

“The room was built into a concrete bunker, which caused prominent room modes,” explained Marc Cote, director of design at SH Acoustics. “Moreover, the proposed design for the renovation, which originally called for two large subs at the front of the system, didn’t address bass management. Even the most advanced surround sound processors don’t begin to address such problems.” SH Acoustics’ Senior Consultant Jeremiah Flaherty served as project manager. “We used a combination of volume, equalization, delay and subwoofer placement to effectively manipulate the acoustical signature of the room for the better,” Flaherty said. The flexibility and massive processing power of three open-architecture Symetrix SymNet Edge frames gave the experts at SH Acoustics all of the tools they needed to dial in the ideal bass response, as well as proper fine-scale tuning of the system’s many full-range components.

The screen channels are traditional cinema screen channels, with left-center-right served by beefy biamped JBL units powered by QSC amplifiers. Four James Loudspeaker Power Pipes subwoofers are located at the front of the room under the stage, whereas six Pro Home Cinema subwoofers line the sidewalls for the purpose of balancing out the room response. Finally, four rbh D’Apollito loudspeakers serve each of the three rear channel positions for a total of twelve surround sound components. Because the Symetrix SymNet Edge system uses a modular I/O topology, Flaherty was able to outfit the three Edge frames with eight analog inputs (fed by the surround sound processor) and twenty-eight analog outputs.

As far as the end user is concerned, the three Symetrix SymNet Edge frames are simply magical black boxes, but using the Symetrix SymNet Composer software, Flaherty and Cote were able to use them like a comprehensive audio chemistry set. “We had complete control over each loudspeaker and subwoofer component,” said Cote. “Getting connected to the system with SymNet Composer was easy, and because the SymNet Edge system networks via the Dante protocol, dealing with eight inputs and twenty-eight outputs was no problem. All of the time-tested DSP modules from earlier-generation systems are still there, with some nice additions, such as Flex Filters.” Flaherty added, “Designing the system within SymNet Composer was straightforward, despite the complexity of the program we created. I really like having the ability to group modules with a common purpose into ‘super-modules.’ I could have four conceptually-simple super-modules, but within each might be fifty constituent modules. It’s a clean way to work.”

Apart from its simplicity, a key advantage of the Dante protocol is its almost un-measurable latency. “With earlier systems, we had to be careful to group common elements within a single processor, or the network latencies might mess with the tuning process,” said Cote. “Dante removes that concern and prevents us from chasing our tails.” With comprehensive programming that addresses every aspect of room tuning, the three SymNet Edge frames are only using 50% of their processing power, leaving plenty of room to address future requests. “You never know exactly what you’ll need until you get into a room and start tuning it,” said Cote. “With SymNet Edge, we were able to include all of the processing blocks that we thought we might possibly use, which made the tuning process much more efficient.”

He continued, “We appreciate that Symetrix is always conservative with its releases, such that there are no bugs or broken elements. Even though the SymNet Edge system is new, there was no problem in specifying it. Symetrix also provides excellent customer support, which can be critical when things get complicated and the client is watching. In addition, the audio quality of Symetrix equipment, including not only floating-point DSP and great algorithms, but also top-notch analog preamps and converters, makes its inclusion within high-end home theaters possible.”
