TO ARRAY OR NOT TO ARRAY: DANLEY JERICHO HORNS PROVE TO BE A BETTER ALTERNATIVE FOR GVSU FOOTBALL STADIUM

lubbers_stadium.JPG

ALLENDALE, MICHIGAN – OCTOBER 2011: With a student body in excess of 24,000, Grand Valley State University (GVSU) in Allendale, Michigan is a major institution of higher education. Its football team is widely recognized as one of the fiercest competitors in the NCAA’s Division II, and it won the national championship in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. It’s no surprise that football is a very big deal at GVSU, a fact reflected in the high-end accommodations of Lubbers Stadium, the school’s large (by Division II standards) football stadium. Its current capacity of 8,500 is regularly met and often wildly exceeded. At a home opener, over 14,000 fans crammed in to see the GVSU Lakers trounce Ferris State. When the school had finally had enough of Lubbers Stadium’s piecemeal audio system and the innumerable complaints it inspired, they hired ASCOM of Holland, Michigan more

SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA – SEPTEMBER 2011: Reel FX Creative Studios is an award-winning animation studio (Katy Perry, Rihanna, Audi, Looney Toons, Watchmen, et al.) with production facilities in Dallas, Texas and Santa Monica, California. Recently, Reel FX Creative Studios repurposed a space at its Santa Monica location to build a new 3D editing suite. The company called on industry veterans Bruce Black and Charles Pell, both members of the Motion Picture Academy with well over half a century in the business between them, to design and install the audio monitoring section in the suite. The duo have worked at such heavy-hitter studios as HBO, Light Iron Digital, Larson Sound, and others. Black has also worked for Skywalker Sound, director Michael Mann, and film mixer Paul Massey.

Citing its flexibility, high-end fidelity, and competitive price point, Black used a Symetrix SymNet Solus 8 to route, level, and condition output to more

CINCINNATI, OHIO – SEPTEMBER 2011: For over a century, God’s Bible School & College in Cincinnati, Ohio has been preparing young people for effective careers in the service of the church, both at home and overseas. A fully accredited college, GBSC offers its students a well-balanced curriculum together with all the social amenities of the larger colleges in the Buckeye State. Among its architectural gems is a beautiful 1,000-seat chapel housed within the Knapp Memorial Building, which, until recently, limped along with an underpowered and semi-functional sound reinforcement system. A new collection of Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and subwoofers has breathed new life into the chapel – and at a very affordable price.

The musical portions of the services held by GBSC are best described as classical, infused with elements of southern gospel. Apart from the steady accrual of speaker failures in the old system, the school’s music department more

A GIFT FOR SAINT NICHOLAS: ASHLY GEAR TURNS TERRIBLE SOUND TO GOLD

TARPON SPRINGS, FLORIDA – SEPTEMBER 2011: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Tarpon Springs, Florida is an impressive structure. Built in 1942, it earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places to help preserve its gorgeous exterior and breathtaking interior, which features white walls and ornate, gilded trim together with classical oil paintings and stained glass. However, as fine as St. Nicholas Church appears to the eye, its sound reinforcement has long been profoundly disappointing. Reverberant and boomy acoustics, paired with utterly ineffective audio processing and loudspeaker placement, ensured that St. Nicholas would not be eligible for a spot on the National Registry of Intelligible Places, were such a registry to exist. Recently, Tampa-based A/V integrator CSI used cutting-edge sound reinforcement technology, centered on an Ashly Audio ne8800 DSP with a WR-5 NE remote control and a Bosch steerable Vari-directional Array, to reign in the boom and splash. more

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – SEPTEMBER 2011: Symetrix announces the release of the Zone Mix 761, which adds ARC-WEB compatibility to the powerful feature set formerly found in the predecessor Zone Mix 760, one of the company’s most popular products. ARC-WEB allows integrators to build customized interfaces that operate on users’ smartphones or Internet-connected computers. In addition to ARC-WEB compatibility, the Zone Mix 761 shines with a modernized aesthetic similar to that of Symetrix Jupiter series and includes a new collection of logic outputs on the rear panel.

“The Zone Mix 761 steps into the shoes of the 760, which has been among our most popular products,” said Trent Wagner, senior product manager at Symetrix. “With twelve inputs and six outputs, it excels at three of the most commonly-required functions in small- to mid-sized installations: paging with automatic ducking; flexible routing and mixing; and comprehensive processing at the input and the more

WASILLA, ALASKA – SEPTEMBER 2011: At just over 100,000 square feet, the largest public space in the city of Wasilla, Alaska is the Curtis D. Menard Memorial Sports Center. It is capable of handling 5,000 visitors, which is a common occurrence at graduations, rallies, and, of course, hockey & indoor football contests. It opened in 2004, but its original sound reinforcement system was so ineffective that the facility had to rent a sound system for every event of consequence. Even then, intelligibility was marginal. The facility recently upgraded to Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers, which, by virtue of their exceptionally well-defined pattern control, minimize the reflections that had doomed all previous solutions to deliver crisp, intelligible sound.

“The original system consisted of four mid-grade horns in the middle of the room supplemented by a collection of 70-volt ceiling speakers,” explained Phil Ballard, principal of Sound Decisions, the firm that designed more
