SYMETRIX SYMNET RADIUS 12×8 JAZZES IT UP AT FAMOUS NYC SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – MARCH 2014: Founded in 1962 by Sylvia Wood, Sylvia’s Restaurant in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City serves soul food that has attained regional and international fame. Numbered among its past clients are Jesse Jackson, Magic Johnson, and the late Nelson Mandela, and its regulars include President Bill Clinton and Reverend Al Sharpton! Over the decades, Sylvia’s has expanded from its original storefront by annexing several of the adjacent storefronts. With each expansion, its sound system grew in size – but not in quality. Taylor Sound of Long Island, New York recently gave Sylvia’s a sophisticated, yet easy to use commercial-grade sound system centered on a Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 Dante networked audio DSP.

“The Symetrix Radius 12×8 was the first thing we installed at Sylvia’s, and it was almost too good,” said Bill Taylor, owner of Taylor Sound. “They clearly needed new speakers and amplifiers as well, but the Radius was such a step up from their old system that, without an external reference, the improvement seemed more than adequate. We went with the Radius 12×8 because we knew the sound quality would be there and because Symetrix’ open-architecture programming would allow us to give them the customized performance and user-control options that the restaurant needed. Specifically, we wanted to zone out each separate room so that processing and volume could be room-specific.” Taylor Sound designed and installed the new system.

Inputs to the system include a podium mic for calling guests when there is a wait (which is frequently), an iPod input, and output from an existing PreSonus studio/live board. The board supports the musicians and vocalists for Saturday Jazz Brunch and Sunday Gospel Brunch, each a longstanding tradition at the restaurant. User control includes a Symetrix ARC-2e wall panel remote for each room, as well as Symetrix ARC-WEB for managers. ARC-WEB allows them to control the system from their smartphones. Taylor Sound is installing new Renkus-Heinz TRX81 loudspeakers in each room in phases.

“The Symetrix Radius 12×8 has everything we need, including comprehensive dynamics, equalization, and delay for slight time alignment in each room,” said Taylor. “I really love working with the SymNet Composer open-architecture software. It allows me easily create whatever I need for a particular situation. Of course, giving the client ARC-WEB for free is nice. Finally, because the Radius 12×8 is built around the Dante network, it will be easy to expand in the future. Already, Sylvia’s is talking about blowing out another wall to add more table space!”

RF VENUE INTRODUCES RF OPTIX™

ASHLAND, MASSACHUSETTS – MARCH 2014: Wireless audio manufacturer RF Venue has released the RF Optix™ RF to fiber optic conversion system, a powerful new tool for mainstream wireless microphone users that expands the possibilities of antenna distribution and wireless audio design.

“RF Optix brings technology from the world of broadcast and IT into the reach of church, school, and theater wireless users,” says CEO Chris Regan. “Integrators, tour managers, and church technicians are now able to do things with fiber that would have been way out of budget, or downright impossible, with coaxial cable.”

The RF Optix system leverages the low cost, lossless characteristics of fiber optic cable over the expensive, fragile, lossy characteristics of coaxial cables. Fiber cable runs thousands of feet long are possible with negligible in-line attenuation, so antennas can be remoted in venues far away from racks or equipment rooms located elsewhere in the facility.

“One of the main constraints for distributed antenna systems for wireless audio is the cost and signal loss challenges of coax cables,” says Regan. “This is especially true for plenum installs, where plenum rated coax can exceed the cost of the entire audio system. With inexpensive plenum rated fiber cables, system designers can now rethink their equipment layouts without sacrificing the huge performance benefit of using a remote antenna system for their wireless system.”

The RF Optix system is offered as a single channel for connecting to one antenna or in a dual channel package for diversity antenna systems. The Install Package includes wall or rack mountable flanges and the Live Package includes a hard-shell carrying case. Both options include 10’ BNC to SMA adapter cables for connecting to antennas and wireless rack equipment; 9V screw-on power supplies are also provided. Available accessories include 100m single mode plenum fiber cables and 100m indoor/outdoor reinforced fiber cables. Custom fiber cable lengths are available.

WICHITA STATE UNIVERSITY’S KOCH ARENA UPS GAME DAY WITH DANLEY HORNS AND SUBS

WICHITA, KANSAS – MARCH 2014: Originally constructed in 1953 and renovated in 2003, the 10,500-seat Charles Koch Arena is home to the Wichita State University Shockers’ basketball and volleyball teams. The men’s basketball team is a ten-time contender in the NCAA finals, and its home games usually sell out the arena. Recently, Daktronics (Brookings, South Dakota) designed and installed a new center-hung video board in Koch Arena, which prompted a simultaneous renovation of its previously disappointing sound reinforcement system. Now, twenty-four Danley Sound Labs Synergy Horn loudspeakers join four Tapped Horn subwoofers to deliver high-volume, high-fidelity audio to Shockers fans.

“Men’s basketball at Wichita State University attracts large, mostly sold-out, crowds,” said John Olsen, a Daktronics regional sales representative for large sport venue audio. “Because the shape of the building is circular and because the roof is curved, the sound level in Koch Arena can be challenging to overcome when the action on the court heats up. The old system lacked the proper design and performance to cover the entire arena with intelligible speech and impactful music, and there was a definite lack of low-end performance. The school had invested a lot of money in past improvements, but they were ineffective for the whole facility. The new system had to be more inclusive of their immediate in-game needs for all the fans.”

In addition to Olsen, who provided the client contact and communication necessary to understand and meet the university’s expectations, the Daktronics team consisted of Aaron Louwagie, project manager, Dan Eckert, system design engineer, and Doug Dodge, field installation engineer. Decker Electric of Wichita, Kansas provided the high- and low-voltage installation and rigging of the clusters, which required extensive welding to existing roof structures. Larry Lucas of Anthony James Partners (Richmond, Virginia) assisted with system design and commissioning.

Owing to its circular architecture (designed to give everyone a better seat), Koch Arena is known locally as “The Roundhouse.” “It’s a symmetrical room with a highly reflective dome,” said Lucas. “The acoustical challenges that come with that are extreme. The new system would have to have exceptional pattern control so that energy would hit the fans and not the ceiling. Danley Sound Labs’ unique horn-loaded designs offer that kind of precise pattern control. Moreover, they’re very cost-effective, especially when you factor in that each Synergy Horn loudspeaker or Tapped Horn subwoofer requires only one processing and amplifier channel.”

The system is comprised of eight clusters that circle the top ring of the new center-hung video board. Each cluster contains a Danley SH-96, a Danley SH-64, and a Danley SM-80. In addition, four Danley TH-118 subwoofers round out the bottom end. “The tight pattern control of those Synergy Horn boxes worked well within each cluster and between each cluster,” continued Lucas. “When we commissioned the system, one box was inadvertently set 6dB hotter than the rest, and it upset the acoustical balancing act that we had designed for the symmetry of the room. Once we brought it back down, the whole system tightened up nicely.”

A Yamaha LS9-16 manages all of the inputs to the system and in turn feeds a QSC Q-Sys processing system. Twenty QSC PL240 and four QSC CX1102 amplifiers power the Danley boxes, whereas two QSC CX302V and two QSC CX108V 70-volt amplifiers power thirty-six JBL Control 25T wall-mounted speakers that cover seats below a balcony lip that is shaded from the video board.

“On the surface, projects like Koch Arena can sometimes seem straightforward, but in reality they are very complex,” explained Olsen. “The SPL and intelligibility required in a facility like this can be very tricky to obtain. The complexity of equipment and the engineering know-how that is needed to properly design, install, test, tune, and fully commission this kind of system takes experience. At Daktronics, we are fortunate to have a team that includes experienced people who can make a project like this look easy. We are pleased with how the Danley speakers perform. They fit well at Koch Arena and the Wichita State University Athletics Department is pleased with the clarity of music and speech that we have achieved. Their fans immediately noticed the upgrades. Reliable Symetrix Zone Mix 761 Delivers Sound 24/7 at Brooklyn Luxury Low-Rise

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK – MARCH 2014: Heatherwood’s newest luxury apartment building is the low-rise at 544 Union in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. The electrical contractor on the job, Lippolis Electric, asked Love Music to design and commission the music playback system for 544 Union. “The client wanted something that would work 24-hours a day, seven days a week without fail,” said Mario Bilotta, vice president of Love Music and the person responsible for 544 Union’s sound system design. “They didn’t want to worry about the music playback system at all – they just wanted it to work. I knew the Symetrix Zone Mix 761 would give them that level of reliability and performance. I’ve been using Symetrix gear for many years now without any troubles at all. In addition, the Zone Mix 761 is easy to program and quick to install.”

The Zone Mix 761’s twelve inputs easily accommodate Internet radio, multiple iPod inputs, and multiple television inputs located throughout the building’s common areas. The unit’s six outputs feed as many zones: the fitness center, the lobby, the second floor patio, the rooftop patio, and two rec rooms. Three QSC amplifiers power thirty-six Community loudspeakers, both indoors and out. Users select both audio and video content in the rec rooms using a URC touch panel control. A Symetrix ARC-2e wall-mounted remote control in each of the other zones allows for intuitive source selection and volume control. 48-CHANNEL ANALOG API VISION CONSOLE PLAYS A PART IN FILM

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE: A 48-channel API Vision console has had a large impact on the fortunes of Ward Archer and his enterprise, Music+Arts Studio. Twenty-five years ago, Archer closed a chapter of his life at the helm of an ad agency to found Archer Records. Six years later, he opened the David Cherry/George Augspurger-designed studio to cater to the label’s artists and has not looked back since.

Music+Arts Studio launched with a 48-channel, discrete, all-analog, surround-sound API Vision console, and prominent members of Memphis’ indie film scene became regular clients over the following years. Like a locomotive building momentum, Music+Arts Studio is currently attracting more and more film work from an expanding geographical base. The ratio of film-related to pure music projects is creeping up on 50:50 thanks, in part, to the API Vision.

“These days, I’m comfortable saying that we have a lot of experience with sound for picture, but that’s owing to some clients that rolled the dice with us in the beginning,” said Archer. “One of our earliest and greatest successes was The Gospel According to Jazz Chapter III, which was recorded live at Reid Temple in Maryland. We took those tracks – which sounded amazing from the moment we pulled them up on the API Vision – and mixed them for stereo and 5.1 [which the Vision is designed to do simultaneously]. The Vision has a transparency and an airiness on the top end that just sounds gorgeous.” The track “It’s What I Do” won a Grammy for Best Gospel Song.

In addition to the API Vision and a killer live room, Music+Arts Studio has catered to its client base by adding an eight-foot Stewart Filmscreen and high-definition projector for film mixing. “It’s a nice, cinematic experience for the director or music supervisor,” said Archer. “We’ll even crank up the [5.1 PMC] monitoring system a bit for the full effect.” The scope of Music+Arts Studio’s film work ranges tremendously, from ADR to scoring to mixing. For example, all of the score recording for the Matthew McConaughey-led drama, Mud, were recorded using the warm analog sound that the API Vision’s circuitry provided. Other projects include the indie film, Cigarette Girl, and mini-series, Headshop.

Despite the film industry windfall, Music+Arts Studio still enjoys tackling strictly-music projects for artists on the Archer Records roster. Recently, Amy LaVere completed Stranger Me, her fourth studio album on Archer Records. Studio manager and engineer Daniel Lynn assisted the project’s producer and engineer Craig Silvey, who had just finished mixing Arcade Fire’s Grammy-winning release, The Suburbs. “Silvey loved the Vision,” said Lynn. “I remember that there was one point during the mixing where we wanted to do some complicated bussing, and it wasn’t immediately apparent how to do it. I called API and got someone on the phone right away. Craig was impressed that we had that kind of rapport!”

ASHLY PEMA PROCESSOR AND AMPS SERVE AT THE U.S. COAST GUARD RECRUITS INDOOR GRADUATION CEREMONIES

CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY: The Training Center at Cape May, New Jersey is the Coast Guard’s only recruit training center and the only place where enlisted Coast Guard personnel can receive formal recognition for a promotion in rank. As a consequence, the Training Center is witness to regular graduation and promotion ceremonies, which take place on the facility’s multi-use sports field when the weather is agreeable. But New Jersey claims its share of months when the weather is decidedly disagreeable, and then the ceremonies are moved indoors. The multipurpose room where they take place, along with the Training Center’s dances and other events, recently benefited from a sound reinforcement system overhaul. An Ashly Pema 4250.70 combination 8×8 Protea™ DSP Matrix Processor and four-channel 70V Power Amplifier anchor the new system with reliable, cost-effective, high-fidelity performance.

“The sound system that they use outside is excellent,” explained Mike DiMartinis, with Elite Audio LLC of Turnersville, New Jersey. Elite Audio worked with the Coast Guard Training Center in the past, and this time the company was hired through Reiley Construction to design and install the new system in the multipurpose room. “In contrast to the outdoor system,” he continued, “the sound system that they use indoors was terrible. It was twenty years old and composed of paging horns. It was not high fidelity, and they were always unhappy to move from the great sound outside to the tin can inside. The events that they held in the multi-purpose room certainly didn’t benefit from it either.”

The new system features three Community R.5 loudspeakers distributed across the width of the room, which also doubles as a basketball court. The speaker systems were encased in a custom steel protective enclosure designed and fabricated by Polar Focus. Depending on its use, the staff can operate the system via a wireless Creston control system; custom programming by son Nick to engage either the East Side exclusively or engage the entire system, and they can also select among a DJ auxiliary input, two wireless microphones, four wired microphones, and a CD/iPod deck. As a failsafe fallback, Elite also installed an inexpensive Ashly neWR-5 wall panel remote control. “We’ve used Ashly products in numerous installations in the past, and they’ve always been 100% reliable and trouble-free,” he said. “The Ashly Pema 4250.70 was perfect for this job because it is cost-effective and gave us the necessary ability to matrix audio, plenty of clean power, easy programming, and flexible user control options, including seamless integration with the Crestron system as well as the Ashly neWR-5.”

DANLEY JERICHO HORNS FILL 2200-SEAT FIRST REDEEMER CHURCH WITH STUDIO-QUALITY SOUND

CUMMING, GEORGIA: For a long time, First Redeemer Church in Cumming, Georgia didn’t have a purpose-built sound reinforcement system for its stunning 2,200-seat sanctuary. The contemporary band that rocked the morning service, as well as the orchestra and two-hundred-plus voice choir that supported the traditional service, played through the repurposed remnants of a sound reinforcement system that had once serviced their converted warehouse where the church first started. Years of band-aids and add-ons averted disaster, but the room was so unevenly covered that a foot in either direction was often significantly different, with obvious phasing in the travel. Now, a pair of Danley Sound Labs’ most powerful point-source boxes, Danley Jericho J1-94s, deliver stunning stereo imaging with abundant low-end support from a beefy Danley BC-415 subwoofer flown in the center of the room. “First Redeemer now has the best sounding sanctuary in the world,” averred Scott Oliver, owner of Centerline Audio Visual of Hendersonville, Tennessee. “I would put it up against any other system, at any price!”

Oliver designed and installed the system, with custom rigging and fly-ware by Diekhoff Company (Nashville, Tennessee). “My philosophy is always to use as few speakers as possible,” said Oliver. “There’s less destructive interference and fewer alignment issues. Instead of using more speakers for a larger room, I prefer to use larger speakers. A lot of people think I’m nuts for designing Danley Jericho Horns into this, but the results say otherwise. The Jericho offers stunning detail and clarity. It’s very accurate – like a giant studio monitor. With two of them, the stereo imaging is vivid, and it is easy to pick out each and every instrument on stage. Even sitting in the balcony, you can hear the snares rattling and different hi-hat velocities. And even though it’s been said a billion times, it’s still true: Danley’s pattern control is unbelievable. The coverage at First Redeemer is remarkably even.”

In addition to the two Danley J1-94 loudspeakers and the BC-415 subwoofer, a pair of Danley SH-69s provide down-fill for the first few rows and a pair of Danley SH-46s provide side-fill. An existing Digidesign Venue console is still in use and feeds a pair of Danley DSLP-48 processors. Three new Danley EDA 12k and four new EDA 4.8k amplifiers power the system “We did a shoot-out with a number of high-end commercial amplifier manufacturers, and the Danleys had the most consistent measured RMS power level,” said Oliver. “Moreover, I like that they are just straightforward amplifiers – no crazy bells and whistles. The whole system embodies the same sort of simplicity – just a couple of processors, 52,000 watts, a handful of (large) loudspeakers, and one massive subwoofer!”

First Redeemer had originally considered purchasing a line array system from another super high-end loudspeaker manufacturer. “We did an entire design and brought in a system to test,” explained Jeff Baggett, First Redeemer’s audio engineer and a Nashville mastering engineer. “It sounded great, and I was skeptical that Danley would be able to touch it. Scott [Oliver] brought over a pair of the Danley Jericho Horns and powered them up. Immediately it was game over. The Danleys ate the other system for lunch. They were tremendously even and had no finger lobes at all. We even matched the EQ curve of the other system to try and make it a fair fight, but the Danleys still killed it. Now that the system is properly installed and voiced for the room, it’s even better. I love it. It’s the kind of sound that makes you want to just bring in some music and listen. The reproduction is so accurate that I could easily master an album on the system. It’s that good. And the subs are just incredible.”

“The very first song we pulled up had no EQ or processing, but already the new Danley system sounded 3,000-times better than the old system that they had been trying to perfect for sixteen years,” said Oliver. “By the time we where on song three, it sounded like a record. The mix was expansive and rich.
