Comprehensive Cable and Connectivity Celebrates 40 Year Anniversary

Comprehensive-Default-Logo--RGB-300dpi-JPG

This September marks the 40th year anniversary for Comprehensive Cable and Connectivity Company.

In 1974, the professional audio visual market was just emerging and the new small businesses across the country known then as “audio visual dealers” had a problem:  Whom do they go to get the connectivity, accessories and supplies they need for the equipment they are selling to local media, schools and businesses? Lucky for the AV industry, Comprehensive had the solution.

Originally known as Comprehensive Video Supply, Comprehensive began as a single source of accessories and supplies for the then up-and-coming “professional audio-visual” market. Sold exclusively through resellers, Comprehensive products, which included their now world-famous cables and connectivity products, were a must-have for every audio-visual and computer reseller. The same was true for the Comprehensive 200-page product catalog. Dealers could use the Comprehensive catalog as an invaluable resource, and have it custom imprinted with their business name and contact information for distribution to customers. (Keep in mind – popular use of the internet was still more than 20 years away, and it would be another 33 years before the first iPhone was introduced. Even the VCR had yet to be released).

Scott Schaefer, Comprehensive’s current President, commented, “Comprehensive was there at the beginning of both AV and IT. It is Comprehensive’s experience, commitment to reliability, value and service that has kept B2B customers around the world coming back year after year. We are so grateful for the decades of support that our industries, resellers, customers and employees – past and present – have shown Comprehensive. Without them, we would not be here today, and we never forget that. We thank each and every one.”

Over the years, Comprehensive built the business with a strong reputation for “putting its money where its mouth is” service by stepping up and standing behind its resellers and products from the very beginning. One of many enduring legacies that Comprehensive has given the industry is the ‘Lifetime Warranty’ on cable assemblies, connectors and adapters. While a marketing commodity in today’s internet age, Comprehensive takes those words very seriously.

“Comprehensive customers need reliability and service above all else. Customers come to Comprehensive because they know they can count on us; every product, every order, every time. ” said General Sales Manager, Martin Fensterstock.

Today, Comprehensive has grown into one of the leading connectivity brands in the U.S. and around the world and their reliability and service have become legendary in the industry. Over the decades, Comprehensive has truly become the “go to” company for B2B audio-visual and I.T. professionals in every industry.

In fact, looking at a partial client list of Comprehensive customers reads like a “who’s who” of technology, business, media, entertainment and government. Clients include: Sony, Panasonic, Disney, Microsoft, Apple, Crestron, NASA, U.S. Army, Columbia University, NBC, ABC, CNN   just to name a few. A list of resellers and distributors reads much the same – Ingram Micro, Anixter, AVI-SPL, The Whitlock Group, HB Communications, B&H Photo, New Egg.com, and the list goes on.

Originally located in Northvale NJ, Comprehensive was purchased by VCOM International Media Corporation in 1995 and has continued to expand even during the recent recession. With continuous, growing demand for their cable and connectivity products and services, Comprehensive recently moved into new, larger headquarters in Fairfield NJ. They are also hiring with many positions available.

Listening to customer needs, something Comprehensive has done since the very beginning, has led to many new and innovative products. The most recent being the extremely successful Pro AV/IT Series HDMI Cable family, which are the onlyHDMI cables specifically designed for systems integrators, corporate, government, medical and other demanding B2B environments. Exclusive features such as ProGrip® Connector Technology, SureLength® Indicators with cable lengths easily visible on all connector heads, as well as color Identification and 4K X 2K support are just a few innovations that customers can expect from Comprehensive products.

In its first 40 years, Comprehensive became synonymous for reliable and innovative connectivity products that the audio-visual and I.T. professional could count on and that at least, is not something Mr. Schaefer thinks will change much over the next 40 years. “We are so excited about where Comprehensive and the market are going – 4K, HDBaseT, collaboration and the cloud, mobile, the opportunities are endless. Technology continues to evolve and advance and so does Comprehensive. We are doubling down on everything our customers have demanded from us in the past and building on it for tomorrow and beyond. The best is yet to come and like all things Comprehensive, you can count on that.”

BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC TO ADD FOURTH API LEGACY CONSOLE

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS – FEBRUARY 2014: The Music Production and Engineering Department (MPED) at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music will add a fourth 32-channel analog API Legacy Plus console to its Studio A in early summer of 2014. At that time, a John Storyk-led renovation will overhaul the space to create a fourth facility with nearly identical equipment to three existing facilities for the instruction of foundational tracking and mixing courses. Because the MPED recognizes the importance of giving students abundant hands-on experience with definitive industry tools, it self-limits the number of Berklee students who can earn their degree in the department. Thus, only half of the Berklee students who apply to the MPED are accepted, which allows the department to maintain a student body of approximately three hundred students. The new API Legacy Plus will help alleviate competition for space and bottlenecks in studio scheduling.

“The API Legacy Plus offers us several advantages,” said Rob Jaczko, chair of the MPED and recording engineer for Bruce Springsteen, Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, and countless others. “First and foremost, its sonics and musicality are an industry benchmark. Just running tracks through it flat is an experience that our students should appreciate. Second, the Legacy Plus has a classic in-line analog signal path, which is very useful for teaching signal flow and problem solving. Finally, we’ve enjoyed a great relationship with API. We’ve always been happy with API’s outboard gear, which is included in seventeen of our studios, and the support we received from the API staff during the purchase and installation of the first three Legacies was great.”

ABOUT API (AUTOMATED PROCESSES, INC.) Established more than 40 years ago, Automated Processes, Inc. is the leader in analog recording gear with the Vision, Legacy Series and 1608 recording consoles, as well as its classic line of modular signal processing equipment.

LAS VEGAS, JANUARY 8, 2014 — Cerwin-Vega!, a Gibson Brand, is pleased to announce the expansion of its popular XD Desktop Speaker Series at CES 2014 (Gibson Tent, CP1/Central Plaza). Joining the company’s existing XD3 Powered Desktop Speaker are the four-inch XD4 and five-inch XD5 full range systems and an eight-inch XD8 powered subwoofer. In the tradition of Cerwin-Vega! products, key design elements of the series include optimized frequency response, overall clarity, low distortion and the company’s trademark bass performance.

Each XD Series member is matched with low distortion, high output amplifiers and soft-dome tweeters for the best possible sound. Equipped with metal covers, the XD3 and XD4 feature 3/4-inch tweeters while the XD5 utilizes a one-inch tweeter. The XD8 sub offers deep bass extension, allowing each system to go to a new level of performance. Unlike other desktop speaker systems, the Cerwin-Vega! XD Series is built with solid MDF wood enclosures, allowing it to deliver the same quality of sound as home speaker systems.

“When setting out to create the Cerwin-Vega! XD Series, our engineers made it their goal to deliver optimal sound reproduction in a compact system,” says Gus Jursch, Director of Operations for Gibson Pro Audio. “Since versatility is the ultimate sign of a great desktop speaker, our designers also worked to ensure that the entire XD Series fully integrates with existing desktop equipment such as audio interfaces, audio mixers or DJ gear.”

The Cerwin-Vega! XD Series speakers are equipped with several front and rear inputs, including an 1/8-inch TRS, RCA pair and 1/4-inch TRS pair inputs, as well as a front panel 1/8-inch TRS headphone jack. Additionally, the speakers feature an optimally designed bass port for proper low frequency phase alignment and minimal turbulence. Also included is Cerwin-Vega!’s signature Vega-Bass Boost Switch, which enables an enhanced bass EQ.

The efficient XD8 Subwoofer offers an extended bass response, high SPL and an optimally designed port for proper low frequency phase alignment and minimal turbulence. In addition to the standard audio input and outputs, a volume knob, crossover switch and polarity switch can be found at the rear of the sub for aligning its audio to the desktop monitors. A System Remote connection port is also on the sub for use with the included XD8 Remote Control, which allows for easy volume control of the entire system. Featuring a Volume knob and Mute/Bypass switch, it is also outfitted with an audio input jack.

Christie’s high performing, versatile ultra-narrow bezel LCD flat panels, with optically bonded Corning® Gorilla® Glass, will be on display at the Corning Incorporated booth (#11612) at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, January 7-10, 2014. Designed for tiled video wall installations, the Christie LCD flat panels, available in sizes 46 or 55 inches, deliver crisp, detailed images and high brightness with full HD resolution for retail environments, museums, universities, broadcast and monitoring applications such as control rooms and security and surveillance.

Christie FHD461-X Flat Panel

The 2-unit wide by 2-unit high Christie FHD461-X flat panels, customized with optically-clear Gorilla Glass, create an unprecedented level of durability for applications where interactivity and damage resistance are paramount. Corning’s thin, lightweight chemically-strengthened glass solution retains the LCD flat panel’s sleek, narrow-bezel design that empowers a wide variety of tiled video-wall applications. A variety of content will be shown to demonstrate the flat panels’ dynamic visual capabilities as well as Corning Gorilla Glass’ durable, scratch-resistant abilities.

“Corning Gorilla Glass provides an innovative solution for digital signage applications due to the thin profile and optical clarity of the glass, making it an ideal cover solution to pair with direct bonding,” said David Loeber, business director of Corning Large Cover Glass. “Directly bonding Gorilla Glass to the LCD panel gives the display superior protection in high-traffic public spaces and it is ideal for touchscreen applications.”

“We continue to work with Corning to offer custom solutions and are pleased to partner with them to display the flat panel and Gorilla Glass option at CES,” said Sean James, vice president, Managed Services for Christie.

CERWIN-VEGA! INTRODUCES SL SERIES AT CES 2014

New Home Speaker System Features Company’s Legendary Power and Sound Quality at an Affordable Price

LAS VEGAS, JANUARY 7, 2014 — Cerwin-Vega!, a Gibson Brand, is pleased to announce the launch of its new SL Series Home Audio System at CES 2014 (Gibson Tent, CP1/Central Plaza). With a choice of six speakers and one subwoofer, the SL Series can be customized to fit any home, office, dorm room or other personal listening environment, to meet a variety of budgets. Options include five-inch bookshelf/satellite and four-way central speakers: one single, one two-way and two three-way standing tower speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer.

Featuring custom high-frequency, soft-dome tweeters for natural sound, high clarity and low distortion, each speaker in the SL Series also has a bass reflex design with tune porting to achieve the iconic Cerwin-Vega! tight and punchy bass response. Available in 10- and 12-inch models, the speakers include large woofer motors that result in maximum excursion for superior low-end definition, and a woofer trim ring that reduces edge diffraction. The floor standing cabinets also feature dual woofer power for extended low-end.

“The new SL Series offers customers Cerwin Vega!’s legendary power, combined with excellent sound quality at an affordable price,” says Gus Jursch, Director of Operations for Gibson Pro Audio. “Depending on a user’s requirements, they’ll want a speaker system that not only fulfills their audio preferences, but does so in one seamless setup. With the SL Series, they can customize their perfect system, one that is ideal for their listening style. Additionally, the contemporary black finish of the SL Series complements any decor, while the modern grille front can be removed to reveal the signature red Cerwin-Vega! woofer, giving the system an extra pop of color.”

In addition to the standard options, the SL-5M Bookshelf/Satellite Speaker offers an advanced computer modeled waveguide that ensures accurate high-frequency coverage and superb imaging from the relatively small, five-inch speaker design. Like the SL Series speakers, the SL-10S Power Subwoofer has a trim ring to reduce diffraction and large woofer motor for maximum excursion and low-end definition. Additionally, it features a high-power built-in amplifier to drive the 10-inch subwoofer to a superior performance level while keeping the size of the unit small.

All SL Series options are built with an internal bracing system for increased cabinet strength to reduce unwanted resonance noise and five-way binding posts for simple and reliable setup. The eight-ohm impedance makes the SL Series compatible with most amplifiers and receivers.

JVC Announces Rugged, All-Weather Camcorders

LAS VEGAS, January 7, 2014 – JVC injects action into the camcorder market with the introduction of a line of rugged, weather-proof Everio models that allow video to be shot in most any weather and offer opportunities for creating unique videos that can’t easily be captured with a smartphone or traditional camcorder. The new models also feature an internal, long-life battery – 4.5 hours on a single charge – for even more versatility.

The two new JVC Everio camcorders, the GZ-R70 and GZ-R10, feature JVC’s Quad-Proof structure – water resistance to a depth of 5m/16.4ft, the ability to withstand a drop from 1.5m/4.9ft, as well as dust-proof and freeze-proof down to –10˚C/14˚F – packaged in a familiar camcorder form factor.

The new line offers a combination of performance capabilities and innovative features for those who want to take their videos beyond what a smartphone or other camcorders can deliver. In addition to their weather- and shock-proof attributes, JVC’s new Everio camcorders feature a 40x optical zoom, 2.5 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, audio that zooms with the picture, and compatibility with third-party editing software, including iMovie and Final Cut Pro X.

The new Everio line’s Quad-Poof technologies were first offered in JVC’s ADIXXION action cameras, designed for shooting point-of-view action video. Bringing the technology to the Everio series means that all kinds of videos can be created under a wide range of weather conditions. There’s even the “oops-proof” factor – no need to worry if the camcorder is accidently dropped onto the ground or even into a pool. Contributing to the camcorders’ IPX8 certified water resistance and IP5X dust resistance is the internal high-capacity battery, which eliminates the risk of damaging the camera while changing batteries in bad weather. Moreover, Everio is compatible with third-party portable batteries (the type used with smartphones for emergency charging). Video can be shot while charging to go beyond the internal battery’s 4.5 hours, or Quick Charge for one hour and add an extra 1.3 hours of recording time if the portable battery current is over 1.0A.

The definitive advantage that Everio camcorders offer over smartphones is quality optics. Everio is equipped with a large-caliber KONICA MINOLTA HD LENS with high-quality 40x Optical Zoom. With 60x Dynamic Zoom, the 2.5M Back-illuminated CMOS Image Sensor maintains the picture’s HD resolution even when exceeding the optical zoom range. And the JVC FALCONBRID engine provides efficient video and audio processing to deliver beautiful images and sound. Adding to audio quality is JVC K2 Technology applied during recording for effective sound restoration during playback. Outdoors, gusts of wind won’t spoil the soundtrack thanks to an original algorithm that effectively attenuates wind noise picked up at the mic.

The two new JVC Everio camcorders are differentiated by internal memory capacity, a built-in LED light is included in the GZ-R70, and the GZ-R10 is available in black, blue and red. They will be available at the following prices:

GZ-R70: $499.95 (Available April 2014)
GZ-R10: $399.95 (Available March 2014)

SEVEN-TIME GRAMMY-NOMINATED MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS TAKE METRIC HALO GEAR ON THE ROAD

SAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA – DECEMBER 2013: Rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis’ most recent release, The Heist, grabbed the number one spots on the Billboard U.S. R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap charts and quickly sold its way to Platinum status. It was a fast start that shows no sign of letting up, as the duo recently garnered seven Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year (for “Same Love”), Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album. That’s an incredibly rare feat for any artist, let alone a duo whose inspired musicianship and honest lyrics leave their street credibility untouched by such towering industry benchmarks. Perhaps just as telling, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were “the most streamed” artists on Spotify in 2013. Although they spent the fall of 2013 packing arenas all over the U.S. in support of The Heist, in the downtime between gigs they turned their attention to the music that will form its follow-up, and Metric Halo is with them along the way.

Capturing and working out ideas on the road is often seen as a balancing act between quick-and-dirty methods that are fast, on the one hand, and higher-quality techniques that take more time and thought to set up, on the other. Lewis largely avoids that compromise with a Metric Halo ULN-2 interface. “The ULN-2 is a pretty unique interface,” he said. “It has two good-quality pre-amps and yet it’s small enough to fit into a carry-on. It also acts as a great interface for Pro Tools, or any other audio program that I use. Macklemore and I have used it countless times on the road.”

After using the Metric Halo ULN-2 for a short while, Lewis was alerted to Metric Halo’s collection of seven plug-ins, sold together as the Metric Halo Production Bundle. He has already used a number of the plug-ins to mix new music in the studio and on the road. Among them are Character – a plug-in that models the sonic signature of a wide range of classic and contemporary audio gear; HaloVerb – an authentic-sounding reverb, Precision DeEsser; and TransientControl – a unique dynamics processor.

“Character is great when I’m not exactly sure what I want to do with something that doesn’t have the right texture,” Lewis said. “It can pull out different pieces that weren’t there before. I love HaloVerb and use it all the time. It has a good variety of feelings and a full range of spring and hall sounds that work well on vocals and instruments.” Some of Lewis’ uses are particular to rap and hip-hop: “Rap vocals have a lot of punch and can get very sibilant. The Precision DeEsser does a great job of cleaning that up. Finally, I didn’t expect the fairly simple TransientControl plug-in to be as useful as it turned out to be. Now it’s one of my favorite plug-ins because it can capture the accents in a recording. For instance, when I have a break beat and I really want the snare and kick to pop, but I’d like to lose everything else in the recording, I use TransientControl.”
