ATC ANNOUNCES ITS NEW SCM19 HI-FI PASSIVE MONITOR LOUDSPEAKERS FOR STEREO AND MULTI-CHANNEL APPLICATIONS

ATC-SCM19

Featuring ATC Designed and Built Tweeters, and New Stylish Curved Cabinets

Las Vegas, NV (November 19, 2013) – Lone Mountain Audio, the U.S. distributor for ATC, Acoustic Transducer Company Consumer Hi-Fi products announces ATC’s new Hi-Fi Passive SCM19 V2 Loudspeakers designed for medium size stereo and multi-channel applications.

The new Hi-Fi Passive closed-box SCM19 employs ATC’s new SH25-76, 25mm soft dome tweeter, updated bass/mid drivers and crossovers housed in a new curved laminated cabinet. The second generation SCM19 employs ATC’s landmark SH25-76 tweeter, developed to satisfy the company’s long-established rigor in drive unit engineering.

ATC’s SH25-76 Tweeter
Sharing technology with the renowned ATC soft domed mid-range drive unit, the new tweeter employs a unique dual suspension system suppressing rocking modes even at high power output levels. The configuration of a short edge-wound voice coil in a long, narrow magnetic gap ensures exceptionally low distortion throughout its operating band and removes the need for Ferro-fluids, which can dry out over time, compromising performance.

A complex, shaped, soft-domed diaphragm extends high frequency range and offers a smooth off-axis response. The tweeter’s 15,000 gauss (1.5 tesla) neodymium magnet has a black heat-treated top plate, which dissipates heat away from the voice coil to maintain high power handling and low power compression. A precision-machined 5.5mm rigid alloy waveguide provides optimum dispersion, a flat on-axis frequency response and resonance-free operation.

New Cabinets and Systems
Establishing what is to be a new style for ATC’s most competitively priced range of loudspeakers, and joining their new SCM7 V3 and SCM11 V2 recently announced, the new SCM19 benefit acoustically and aesthetically from a curved cabinet construction. The new cabinet design is braced and laminated for high rigidity and damping, the curved enclosures in real cherry or black ash veneer also impart a strong impression of handcrafted design quality. The systems improved crossovers feature metallized polypropylene capacitors, large air cored inductors and ceramic wire-round resistors offer superior power handling and clarity. The new model exhibits an impedance curve free from low values, presenting an easy load for amplifiers of 75 to 300 watts.

The SCM19 is designed for optimum performance with the grill in place – although the difference in performance without the grill is minimal. The metal grille, finished in anthracite grey, fixes to the cabinet via hidden magnets. According to tradition, each model number represents internal cabinet volume in liters.

Second Generation SCM19
The new ATC SH25-76 soft dome tweeter is joined with the company’s highly linear 150mm mid/bass driver. It features an integrated 75mm soft dome – exceptional for its horizontal dispersion of mid-band frequencies – and a huge 9kg high-energy, ‘Super Linear’ magnet systems, which includes a 75mm diameter flat wire, under hung voice coil, meticulously milled and formed by ATC. The magnet system and a carefully weighted doped fabric cone assembly contribute to the SCM19’s wide bandwidth, impressive dynamic range and convincing bass output coupled with very low distortion as a result of the unique ‘Super Linear’ motor system.

The new range of ATC closed-box passive loudspeakers is certain to raise the bar in performance driven bookshelf loudspeakers. Manufactured in-house, the new SCM19 offer the ownership of a hand-built ruggedly engineered speaker, world famous for musical accuracy and high power output, and are backed by ATC’s six-year warranty.

METRIC HALO GEAR SCORES HIGH IN PROFESSOR WHALEY’S RAP-MATICS STEM-EDUCATION PROGRAM

WASHINGTON D.C./ATLANTA, GEORGIA – NOVEMBER 2013: As a founding member of the pioneering San Francisco hip-hop group Bored Stiff, Pablo Sierra Whaley (aka “Professor Whaley”) has been writing raps and producing music since 1988. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from U.C. Berkeley and a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Between the two degrees, Whaley spent several years as a middle school math teacher and department chair in the Bay Area, where he first developed his innovative “Rap-Matics” program for boosting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) competency using elements of hip-hop, poetry, and technology. Today, Whaley continues to curate the Rap-Matics curriculum and operate his production studio, Sonic Legacy Music with the help of Metric Halo’s ChannelStrip 3.

“Music is in my DNA,” asserted Whaley. “I was born into a musical family. My mom, grandma, and great-grandma all played piano. I played the trumpet in middle school, and then started a hip-hop group with my friend ‘Equipto,’ a now-legendary Frisco MC. As a teacher, one of the problems I noticed early on was that students were not connecting with the subject matter in the math books we were using. So I decided to take a new approach. I knew that my students loved the hip-hop culture. As an MC, I knew that rapping was a tool that could be used to connect people with concepts and information. I had ‘math-raps’ and ‘chemistry-raps’ to prove it. So I decided to create a literacy program that fused rap with mathematics. This was in the spring of 2000. To my knowledge, I am the first educator in the United States to have created a hip-hop-based math literacy program.”

Whaley founded Sonic Legacy Music in 2005. “I’ve used hundreds of different plug-ins from the freeware to the top-of-the-line stuff,” he said. “But nowadays, whenever I make music, I use Metric Halo ChannelStrip 3. It’s an extremely versatile plug-in. I’m using it for mixing and mastering several of my own projects right now, including unreleased Rap-Matics tracks and client projects. I have also used its de-noising, equalization, and compression to clean up audio from Rap-Matics video footage. The EQ is amazing, especially on drums and vocals. The scalable GUI is awesome. The presets are truly useful and the EQ curves are easy to grab and manipulate. The compressor is clean, but I can tweak it to get a more grimy sound when I need it. Overall, the ChannelStrip 3 is my go-to plug-in for all things requiring gating, compression, or equalization… which is pretty much everything!”

NOW YOU CAN MIX IN THE BOX

JESSUP, MARYLAND – OCTOBER 2013: Automated Processes Inc. (API) takes great pleasure in announcing the latest addition to its line of highly acclaimed analog consoles: THE BOX® project console. THE BOX is specifically designed for audio professionals with project or home studios who require a smaller format console with that “big console sound.” True to its heritage, THE BOX features the same circuitry, performance and legendary API sound as the company’s highly successful Vision, Legacy Plus and 1608 consoles. The new console debuted to a highly enthusiastic AES show in New York, and is now shipping from the company’s factory in Jessup, Maryland.

“THE BOX offers an easy, turnkey solution for recording and mixing,” said API President Larry Droppa. “It’s a great option for people who record a few channels at a time, but demand the warmth and punch that a large API console delivers. In addition to four inputs, full center section control, and 16 channels of API’s famous summing, the icing on the cake is a classic API stereo compressor on the program bus. Now you can truly record and mix… in THE BOX.”

API 1608 GRADUATES TO NUREMBERG UNIVERSITY OF MUSIC

NUREMBERG, GERMANY – SEPTEMBER 2013: The API 1608 serves as the perfect teaching tool in many interesting places in the world, and now, one can be found in Studio 214 at the Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg (Nuremberg University of Music). Here, creativity is the focus and hands-on experience is the goal. The equipment available to the students offers unequaled opportunities with both vintage and modern effects, all in a school that dates back to 1821.

The decision to purchase the 1608 came to fruition with the help of API’s German distributor Erwin Strich. Toni Hinterholzinger, head of the recording department, believed that the punchy and clear sound of the API preamps would make this the ideal learning tool for teaching classic recording techniques. Most of the recording projects are student-based, but on occasion, there are some commercial projects where students assist and often take part as musicians. Some who have recorded on the 1608 include Wolfgang Buck, Nevio, Johannes Ludwig, Tilmann Herpichböhm, Steffen Schorn, and Olivia Solner.

“This is, for sure, one of the best equipped rooms in Europe – a place where audio magic actually happens and sonic dreams come true!” said Hinterholzinger.

MIX ENGINEER ARIEL BORUJOW EXPANDS HIS METRIC HALO PALETTE TO INCLUDE THE PRODUCTION BUNDLE

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – AUGUST 2013: Ariel Borujow is chief engineer at New York City’s Stadiumred studios (www.stadiumred.com) and a multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated mix engineer who has worked with artist and producers such as Kanye West, Madonna, The Black Eyed Peas, P Diddy, J-Lo, Chiddy Bang, Just Blaze, and others. His success stems from his passion for audio, which makes his typical ten-hour day (clocked seven days a week) the key ingredient in a life well lived. Indeed, when we caught up with him, Borujow was happy to be getting back into that groove after being sick for a few weeks. “I didn’t know what to do with myself,” he laughed. “I was just stuck there, roaming around in my apartment, which is usually just a place to sleep at the end of a long day. I guess the upside is that I got to know my apartment better?” Now back in the studio, Borujow is finishing up projects with Modern Machines, Charlie Red, and Low Country Kingdom using the Metric Halo Production Bundle, which includes ChannelStrip 3, TransientControl, Multiband Expansion, Multiband Dynamics, Character, Precision DeEsser, and HaloVerb plug-ins.

Modern Machines (www.facebook.com/ModernMachines) is a pair of New York City producers who are making some of the most engaging and danceable electronic dance music on the planet, and Borujow recently mixed their single, “We Are the Night.” “They come from an engineering background, so the tracks sounded good coming in,” he said. “Nevertheless, they gave it some grit on purpose, and the challenge was to keep that feel while making sure the music would still translate effectively at a dance club.”

Borujow was a longtime user of Metric Halo’s ChannelStrip 2, and he’s pleased that ChannelStrip 3 retains the same “out-of-the-box sound” while adding features that make it even more functional and flexible. “The size is great and the interface is even more intuitive, but the most exciting improvement is the incorporation of a spectrum analyzer,” he said. “It’s a big deal and it’s on almost all of the Production Bundle plug-ins.” As with all of his mixes, Modern Machines benefitted from plenty of ChannelStrip 3. For the all-important kick drum, he used ChannelStrip 3 to dial in the right timbre and dynamics and then used TransientControl to punch it up. “I’ve used other manufacturers’ transient plug-ins,” Borujow said, “but Metric Halo has given TransientControl something that is noticeably better, but in a subtle and interesting way. I can’t exactly put my finger on it, but there’s no doubt that it really improves the dynamics without over-processing them.”

Borujow is using a slightly different part of his brain to mix Charlie Red [www.wearecharliered.com], a duo that fuses hip-hop, blues, and rock to come up with a very unique style. The music is all live instruments and the band recorded the tracks at home. “These guys are real artists and they go by feel,” Borujow said. “All of the tracks are masterfully performed, but some of the technical stuff needed polishing.” Again, he used TransientControl to add shape and dynamics to the drums, and ChannelStrip 3 found use everywhere. The tracks were also noisy at times and Borujow used the Multiband Expander to carve out the noise. The very accurate spectrum analysis feature allowed him to zero in and position the bands for maximum effect.

Because Charlie Red’s recordings weren’t made in a purpose-built live room there was a certain “boxiness” to the recordings. Rather than EQ out the room mode frequencies, Borujow used Multiband Dynamics to carve them out dynamically. “Again, the spectrum analyzer was a tremendous help,” he said. “To lessen that boxy sound, Multiband Dynamics is preferable to EQ because EQ tends to lose something. Multiband Dynamics leaves the life in the recording. It’s a much more pleasing solution. Metric Halo’s version sounds great and is quick and easy to work with.”

With another “this meets that” description, Borujow finds Low Country Kingdom (www.lowcountrykingdom.com) at the intersection of Gorillaz meets the Beastie Boys. “These guys are just super musical! They produced all the music in Logic and sent me the stems,” he said. “To give it more of a ‘sound,’ I used Character. I especially like the ‘American Solid State’ algorithm. It’s subtle and not overboard, and it doesn’t sound digital. It sounds authentic. It’s been a go-to plug-in and setting for me lately. It’s all over the Low Country Kingdom album.” He also used the Precision DeEsser quite a lot. “I use it a lot of the time for vocals, sure, but I use it for a lot of other instruments as well,” he explained. “For example, the Low Country Kingdom snare sound was a little too bright at times. Rather than EQ it out, which kills those frequencies even when they’re not annoying, the Precision DeEsser allows me to keep them down only when they’re too much. I put the TransientControl behind it, and the snare sounded awesome.”

All three projects benefitted in roughly equal degrees by Borujow’s newfound access to HaloVerb. “I’m a huge fan of the ‘Sizzly Plate’ preset,” he said. “I find that as I get older, I use reverb as much as I used to, but I want to hear it at the front of the mix less and less. It’s more effective as a subconscious thing – an element that puts instruments in a common space. I don’t want to hear it, I want to feel it.” He used HaloVerb for Modern Machines’ synths, Charlie Red’s guitars and drums, and Low Country Kingdom’s vocals.
