Yamaha R Remote App For Rio Line

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced today the launch of R Remote software. R Remote joins the Yamaha R Series input/output rack units, which since their inception, have made significant advancements in audio, creating natural sound quality, Dante audio networking, and system flexibility. The new Windows™- based PC standalone application, R Remote enables remote control of R Series Rio3224-D, Rio1608-D, and Ri8-D rack unit head amplifiers directly from a computer.

With R Remote, a live recording system can be created with just R Series I/O racks and a computer running Nuendo Live or similar DAW software. Combined with the I/O racks, R Remote can be used with consoles that up until now have not been able to support remote head amp control, such as the 02R96 or 01V96i. For this application, however, a Dante-MY16-AUD expansion card must be installed in the console. The end user will also be able to operate a stand-alone R Series Dante infrastructure independently from a console.

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Housed in the renovated, historic Fenway Theater in Boston, the Berklee Performance Center is the Berklee College of Music’s flagship performance space seating more then 1,200 and counted among Boston’s most prestigious concert halls. Parsons Audio (Wellesley, MA) recently added two new Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Consoles in the performance center for use by student and faculty productions as well as national entertainment.

Berklee has had a long relationship with Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems consoles dating back to 1976 beginning with the Yamaha PM1000, 3K, PM4K, PM1D, PM5D, DM2K, and now the CL Series. A CL5 is positioned at front of house with a second based in Studio BPC located in an area above the theater.

“The BPC looked upon the new CL as the PM1D successor, states Rick Scott, Sales Director, Parsons Audio LLC. Among features that were appealing to the technical team were the networking capabilities of this generation of Yamaha consoles along with its Rupert Neve plug-ins within the Premium Rack and integration with Nuendo Live.” Parsons Audio has provided customer support of the school’s Yamaha consoles since the very beginning.

“We had the Yamaha PM1D for eight years, and wanted to make sure we could stay up-to-date with current, commercially available (and currently supported) technology, states Ed Libeartore, A1 at BPC. We also really wanted to have something with remote iPad control, so we could mix monitors on stage from the FOH console.”

Liberatore said he immediately loved the sound of the preamps and the processing, and quickly became accustomed to having the controls accessible from the touch screen. “Handing an iPad off to a student assistant has been working amazingly well. It lets me concentrate on the house mix and seems to make the performers more comfortable knowing that there is somebody who can listen to the same monitor speaker with them and build a custom mix right on the spot with exactly what they need without ever having to shout to me, standing 50 feet away.”

Studio BPC, which regularly multitrack records many of the performance center concerts, is a teaching lab for live performance location recording classes. The studio is fed from a separate split off the on-stage mic snake box, but also receives a feed from the house Dante network for additional options. “I am really happy with our decision on going with the CL5 console for our live recording studio, states Alejandro Rodriguez, Associate Professor, Music Production and Engineering, Berklee College of Music. The Dante Network is key in the success of our new BPC Studio, and we use Nuendo Live linked to the CL5 as one of our two multi-track systems capable of recording up to 64 channels, receiving independently the outputs of our 64 Grace mic preamps.”

MUSEO DEL DUOMO IN MILAN’S CATHEDRAL OPENS WITH ASHLY PROCESSING

MILAN, ITALY – JANUARY 2014: Although ground broke for the construction of Milan Cathedral in Milan, Italy in 1386, it was only in the last decade that its construction was declared complete. The massive architectural project took over six-hundred years – twenty-four generations – and links Europe’s Middle Ages, through the Renaissance, to Post-modernity. Milan attracts two million visitors a year, and almost all of them visit the famous cathedral. To convey the epic story of its construction and to raise additional funds for Milan Cathedral’s costly upkeep, the Cathedral Museum opened in 1953. In keeping with the long timescale of the cathedral’s construction, the museum closed for five years and only recently re-opened, completely refurbished and ready to accommodate contemporary revenue streams. Among its new offerings, the museum added a conference room that can be rented for meetings and dinners. To keep costs low, but functionality and fidelity high, the conference A/V system uses an Ashly Pema 4125.10 100V output, combination four-channel 125W amplifier with a built-in 8×8 Protea™ DSP Matrix Processor.

Daniele Santini of Etabeta Electronics designed the museum’s new conference system, and Marco Oberto of Oberto & Allerino oversaw its installation. “We were called in after a different system failed to meet the needs of the client,” explained Santini. “That system seemed overly complicated and difficult to control remotely. The client wanted a system that would be virtually invisible and that would still yield highly intelligible audio. Moreover, they wanted a system that could be remotely controlled, even by lay users with no technical background. We went with the Ashly Pema 4125.10 for three reasons. First, it gives a very favourable performance-for-price ratio. Second, it only occupies two rack spaces and yet provides eight inputs, auto-mixer functionality, full DSP capabilities, and four powerful 250Watt amplifier channels. Third, it connects easily to Ashly’s line of intuitive user control units.”

Inputs to the system include two wired gooseneck microphones on the conference table, two Mipro ACT wireless microphones, and four line inputs located at strategic points around the room. The Ashly 4125.10 powers one On Point Audio OPA-Line loudspeaker system, plus six individual column loudspeakers. The whole room acts as one zone with several of the loudspeakers delayed slightly to optimize intelligibility at the table.

Users of the system are primarily the people who rent the room for various functions and Santini programmed and deployed the system so that they would be able to use it intuitively. An Ashly WR-5 programmable push-button remote allows users to select from various preset configurations, such as “dinner party,” “speech,” or “background music.” In addition, an Ashly FR-8 eight-channel Network Remote Fader console provides individual volume control for all eight input sources. “The Ashly remotes are very easy to configure, and we can insert them anywhere in an establishment’s local area network (LAN) for immediate and direct control of the inputs and outputs,” said Santini. “The museum is very pleased with the new system. They like the intelligibility and are amazed at how easy it is to control using the Ashly WR-5 and FR-8.”

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY THUNDERS WITH DANLEY JERICHO HORNS

PULLMAN, WASHINGTON – JANUARY 2014: The Cougars football team of Washington State University plays all of their home games in 33,500-seat Martin Stadium. Although on the smaller side among its Pac-12 peers, the stadium has more than enough seats for every resident of Pullman, Washington (the university’s home), and loyal alumni and visiting fans easily make up the difference, filling the stands to near capacity on game day. Recent additions to the stadium necessitated relocating the scoreboard to the opposite end zone, and that in turn inspired a full upgrade to Martin Stadium’s sound reinforcement system. Three Danley Sound Labs J3-64 Jericho Horns, two J4-31 Jericho Horns, and four TH-812 “Rock Monster” subwoofers now fill Martin Stadium with glorious, high-fidelity sound.

Washington State University called in Anthony James Partners of Richmond, Virginia to design the sound system. “It was a pretty straightforward situation,” said Lee Vaught, senior audio engineer at AJP. “Martin Stadium is a bowl with almost no overhang. A distributed system wasn’t an option. We had to go with an end-fired system, and the new scoreboard was the obvious place to put it. The only question was exactly what boxes to use. This is my first full Danley installation, and the their design provided the necessary coverage with vastly fewer boxes than I would have used with conventional technology.”

Three Danley J3-64 Jericho Horns provide the majority of the full-range coverage at Martin Stadium. They split the stadium down the middle, with the odd J3-64 covering the additional asymmetrical seating below the press and suite box. Two Danley J4-31 Jericho Horns deliver high-frequency content to the far seats, where otherwise the high end would be diminished having traveled through so much air. A single Danley OS-80 weatherproof Synergy Horn loudspeaker fills in for the seats right below the scoreboard. Four Danley TH-812 “Rock Monster” subwoofers – two to a side – complement the fidelity of the full-frequency components with robust low end. A handful of JBL Control 28 loudspeakers provide coverage of the small shaded area underneath the press and suite box. A rack of Crown i-Tech HD-Series amplifiers powers the system, with processing from a BSS London backbone.

Danley Sound Labs, President Mike Hedden commented, “This was a short turnaround project and was one of the first using our SketchUp plugin module in DDT3D. This is a very powerful 3D coverage program we developed that enables accurate predictions of all frequencies from 20Hz and up. We’ve worked with virtually all the major modeling programs and DDT is simply the easiest yet powerful program out there. This enabled us to turn the entire design around in basically one day.”

“The coverage is great,” said Vaught. “The long throw across the field is impressive, and the high end from the J4s together with the low end from the 812s provides a full-frequency experience that stadiums with conventional systems would have a hard time replicating. Surprisingly, we actually received a request to turn the system down after the first few home games. That never happens! If anything, systems aren’t loud enough. But at Martin Stadium, we pulled it back a bit. There’s plenty of headroom, and it sounds clean and undistorted. Cougars fans will enjoy this sound system for a long time to come!”

High-Tech Meets Elegance at Iceland’s Hippest Bowling Lanes

Reykjavik, Iceland | January, 2014 – When a bowling alley houses 22 lanes plus a VIP/private party area, a sports bar, cafe, and restaurant, live DJs, and more than 50 screens to showcase all the best in live sports and entertainment, it’s clear that this is not just another blue collar beer-and-peanuts joint. Keiluhöllin Egilshöll, is a noteworthy blend of both high-tech and elegant design, boasting one of Iceland’s largest AV installations to date and being named Bowlers Journal’s “Best New Lounge/Restaurant.”

Inside this 30,000 sq. foot venue, club-like LED lighting pours over the lanes and neon bowling balls, with sleek, softly lit lounges with plush couches tucked away behind. LCD screens hover over the lanes and line the dimly lit brick walls of the bar and cafe. The restaurant, meanwhile, is free of screens, filling the space with decorative lighting and rustic stone walls.

Despite the venue’s singular elegance, it still presents all the acoustical challenges associated with any bowling alley — hard, reverberant surfaces, ever-changing audio material, and of course, the inevitable din of the game itself. Reykjavik-based AV designers ETOS designed and installed the high-end sound and video systems for this uniquely diverse venue. As ETOS General Manager Jakob Kristinsson explains, the audio system had to not only transmit intelligible announcements over the din of a cacophonous bowling alley, but also deliver full spectrum sound and hefty bass for music and live DJs – hence the decision to go with the power, pattern control, and full-range performance of the Renkus-Heinz CF/CFX series.

Across the six zones covering the 22 lanes and VIP area, ETOS installed 12 CFX151 cabinets, with six CFX18S subwoofers for low end reinforcement. Featuring a two-inch extended range titanium HF driver, and a 15-inch heavy duty woofer that can handle up to 700W, the CFX151s powerfully deliver the full spectrum performance required in the main bowling area. The built-in crossover also includes EQ and high-frequency protection, ideal for the dynamic changes in audio and occupancy levels.

Augmenting the primary setup, six CFX121 cabinets in three zones cover the restaurant area, with four more CF121 units across the four zones covering the sports bar and cafe. Audio networking is courtesy of two Peavey MediaMatrix Nion n6 systems.

The video component of this AV installation is extensive as well, including more than 45 LCD displays and 15 projectors from Philips, LG, and Panasonic. Rounding out the impressive look and sound of Keiluhöllin Egilshöll is a full Crestron controlled LED and lighting system, including five wireless control pads.

The installation’s intense schedule compressed about 800 hours into an eight week span to complete the entire project, from design to doors opening. Since then, ETOS reports the system has been performing flawlessly, blending the best in design with the best in technology.

Large-scale enterprise-wide videoconferencing connects professionals

Independent professional services firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists, Arup have deployed the Pexip® Infinity scalable software platform worldwide. The deployment will enable Arup’s 11,000 staff across 38 countries to use high definition video, voice and data collaboration and will also be used to connect to Arup’s clients.

Pexip ensures simplicity meets functionality

“Initially, within our proof of concept for next generation virtual meeting rooms, we were evaluating bridging solutions from three different vendors. However, we found these to be more complex than needed – they also required proprietary hardware and could not achieve satisfactory interoperability and HD video integration with Microsoft® Lync. Pexip Infinity was brought in through a revised vendor list. It met our requirements for a software-only solution and we had it working globally in less than two hours. We were really impressed,” explained Chris Ellen, Unified Messaging Team Lead at Arup.

Arup were traditionally using Cisco Jabber™ but wanted to extend their mobile video portfolio by introducing Microsoft Lync. “Using Pexip Infinity means you can dial in and use the same PC or device for a video call but at increased quality. We don’t have to license additional software clients either which is an attractive value proposition,” explained Ellen.

Video conferencing for today and beyond

Arup staff are issued with a personal Virtual Meeting Room with a PIN number for security. Individual users can control their conferences and view presentations from their own mobile phone or tablet.

“Our existing video infrastructure was physically restricted by the number of hardware boxes in our network. With Pexip Infinity, there’s no restriction on the number of people that can use the system. The platform is always on and always available, which enables the team to connect instantly whenever collaboration is required in their workflow,” said Ellen.

“Unlike traditional DSP-based MCU’s, Pexip’s conferencing nodes are virtual machines that can sit on either a VMware® or Microsoft Hyper-V infrastructure making use of standard server architecture. For Arup, minimal to no investment is required to start deploying the solution as we can utilize existing infrastructure. Being virtual also means conferencing capacity can be increased within minutes and the platform is inherently redundant.”

Arup intend to extend the solution to incorporate client meetings. “We can now use the Pexip WebRTC functionality for external meeting participants. In the past we had to ship a copy of Cisco Jabber™ and provision a user account. This was cumbersome for everyone involved, it introduced a delay and had a cost attached to it. With Pexip Infinity we now just email a URL and external callers can experience professional quality video via their web browser,” explained Ellen.

“As an early adopter of Infinity, we have been involved in beta testing and providing feedback directly to the Pexip development team. The openness we enjoy with Pexip is refreshing and it helps us to plan for the future. Pexip Infinity is a good strategic fit for Arup.”

Nine Discounted Sessions of InfoComm’s Networked AV Systems Class to be offered

InfoComm International is collaborating with AMX Europe to provide networked audiovisual systems training to AV professionals. At least 75 students will be able to take InfoComm’s highly regarded Networked AV Systems class at a discounted rate in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom, dramatically raising the number of trained professionals in the region.

The three-day classes will be offered nine times in AMX Training Centres, and will cost €400/£350+VAT for members, €800/£650+VAT, for non-members.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – JANUARY 2014: Based in India, Sonodyne is well known for designing and manufacturing studio monitors that deliver big-ticket performance without the big ticket. Company founder Ashoke Mukherjee and his research team have yet again smashed the performance/price barrier with the SRP series of bi-amplified, die-cast aluminum studio reference monitors, and TransAudio Group, Sonodyne’s U.S. distributor, will be showcasing them at Booth #6945 at NAMM 2014. Symetrix SymNet Edge Processor Defines Video Conferencing at the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington

MOUNT VERNON, VIRGINIA – JANUARY 2014: The Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington opened recently just outside the gates of Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, roughly fifteen miles south of Washington DC. Not only is the $45 million building the leading scholarly research facility for America’s first President, it is also filled with state-of-the-art technology that allows scholars-in-residence to videoconference with colleagues around the world. A SymNet Edge Dante networked audio DSP system with comprehensive conferencing features, including Acoustic Echo Canceling (AEC), delivers robust, high-quality audio for the library’s six video conferencing systems, as well as background audio and paging services. A dedicated SymNet Radius 12×8 DSP together with a custom Crestron computer control interface serve as the heart and brains of the library’s recording studio.

Richard Derbyshire of Shen, Milsom & Wilke’s Washington, D.C. office designed the sound reinforcement system, and IES Communications of Roanoke, Virginia installed it. Jim Hogan, A/V project manager with IES Communications, explained, “This is a high-profile, high-visibility installation, and the expectation is perfection. We’ve done a number of Symetrix installations, and they always go smoothly. The technical support from Symetrix is excellent, and the sound quality and stability of the units are great. The modular SymNet Edge system gives us tremendous flexibility with regard to inputs and outputs as well as customized processing.”

The sound reinforcement system and conferencing systems are located primarily in the conference wing of the library, where two larger conference rooms and two smaller conference rooms join the library’s signature lecture and conferencing space, The David M. Rubenstein Leadership Hall. A massive eighteen-foot by eight-foot micro-tile screen forms the focal point of Rubenstein Hall and allows the library’s scholars-in-residence to connect with individuals and groups across the country and around the world. Four SymNet Edge frames are outfitted with eleven AEC cards, two 2-Line analog telephone interface cards, three analog input cards, and two analog output cards, all working in conjunction with two SymNet xIn12 and two SymNet xOut12 I/O expanders. The units are integrated using the DanteTM network audio protocol. All of the conferencing systems benefit from Symetrix’ advanced AEC hardware and DSP algorithms.

In addition, the library staff has use of a small audio and video recording studio with which to create educational and other materials in-house. Hogan centered the studio workflow on a SymNet Radius 12×8 processor. He used its open architecture to design custom recording and playback functionality that users control via an intuitively laid out Crestron interface, thereby enhancing their productivity by providing them with efficient, easy to use tools.
