Technomad and Onyx AudioVisual Upgrade Woodberry Forest School Sound Systems

Integrator chooses all-in-one Technomad Turnkey PA System to reproduce high-quality voice and music indoors at Virginia school

BOSTON, APRIL 2, 2012Woodberry Forest School, situated on the banks of the Rapidan River near Charlottesville, Virginia, is an historic boy’s prep school situated on 1200 acres of land that once belonged to General William Madison, the brother of President James Madison. Using Technomad advanced audio solutions, the school has upgraded sound systems in two athletic facilities in alignment with campus-wide building preservation efforts.

Onyx AudioVisual, a Virginia-based IT consulting company with expertise in audio/video, network infrastructure and lighting, designed and integrated the new sound systems. The company chose a Technomad Turnkey PA System to bring multiple loudspeakers and all required signal processing systems together into a single, integrated solution.

The complete system, deployed in a 70-volt configuration to accommodate lengthy cable runs across four zones, reproduces intelligible voice and high-quality music over long distances for athletic meets, games and other activities in both areas. The installations include 11 Technomad Vernal loudspeakers in the pool area and 10 in the Reily Wrestling Room, delivering high-fidelity sound and broad audio dispersion from a compact form factor.

Onyx AudioVisual also chose Technomad for its rugged, weatherproof loudspeaker designs. The project required environmentally tough loudspeakers that could withstand the humidity and moisture associated with indoor pool environments.

Bart Cardea, sales director for Onyx AudioVisual, said his team balanced perfect audio detail inside the pool area and the wrestling room to achieve pristine athletic event sound. The upgrades substantially improve sound quality around the galleries, bleachers, pool and mats to help spectators follow the action during events.

“The sound needed to be excellent quality for sports writers, fans and athletes,” said Cardea. “We needed to preserve the historic integrity of the areas, while delivering state-of-the-art sound technology. We chose Technomad because of their reputation for superior sound, easy setup and environmental durability. They exceeded our specifications for sound while meeting the environmental challenges we faced.”

Cardea added that the Technomad Turnkey PA System design established a new central audio headend from which all cable runs originate. Technomad Turnkey PA Systems include a pre-wired amplifier, six-channel mixer, cables, connectors and open rack space for audio source equipment — all delivered in a compact, durable equipment rack.

Primarily used in live sound applications, the RND 5045 is a 2-channel analog, 1RU device that not only enables up to 16dB of additional gain before feedback when conditions allow, but because it is a dynamics-only processor, the integrity of the original signal is preserved. The device reduces background sounds and enhances the main audio source, providing clarity and warmth to podium, lavaliere, and headset mics, as well as in extreme situations, such as referee mics.

Dugan-MY16 Card:
The Dugan-MY16 card is designed for current model Yamaha digital mixers and processors including Yamaha 01V96, DM1000, 02R96, DM2000, M7CL, LS9, DSP5D, PM5D, and DME24/64N. Dan Dugan Sound Design automatic mic mixing products eliminate cueing errors, reduce feedback and ambient noise pickup, allow for smooth transitions between talkers, and provide consistent system gain no matter how many mics are open. The card can handle up to 64 live microphones, and is remote controllable.

DiGiCo SD5 Debuts at ProLight+Sound

A decade after the launch of the D5 Live, British audio solutions manufacturer DiGiCo launches its new incarnation, the SD5. As you would expect, the SD5 fits directly into the D5’s shoes, but benefits from the advancements made possible by DiGiCo’s proprietary Stealth Digital Processing™.

“We’ve evolved a lot over the past decade, both in terms of the way we use the available technology and our understanding of what our customers really want and need,” says DiGiCo’s managing director, James Gordon. “SD5 is the culmination of that combined knowledge, so we want to make it the next generation D5 Live.”

The SD5’s worksurface is a low noise, heat dissipation worksurface benefiting from Hidden-til-lit (HTL) technology, yet its five digitally driven full colour TFT LCD screens, three of which are touch sensitive, have a new configuration that allows easy access to single or multiple users. There are also two interactive dynamic metering displays (IDM) and quick access buttons are positioned down the left side of the channel screens for fast and easy navigation.

Incorporating the master screen into the worksurface design has allowed for complete user feedback, but maintained a lower profile meter bridge. This still allows clear visibility of those on stage for the user, with everything in close reach to the mix position.

As with all SD range consoles, the SD5’s superior headroom, dynamic range and audio quality are of paramount importance and its feature set surpasses any other console in its class.

As standard, the SD5 comes with a 2Gb fibre optic system, which is capable of running 448 channels of I/O at 96kHz, plus 56 console-to-console tie lines, allowing connection to up to 14 of the SD variant racks. There are three redundant MADI ports and local I/O includes eight microphone inputs, eight line outputs and eight AES I/O (mono).

The SD5 has 124 input channels; 56 configurable busses, plus up to 5.1 master; a 24 x 24 fixed matrix; DiGiTubes on every channel, buss and output; 24 assignable Dynamic EQ; 24 multiband compressors; 24 stereo effects; 32 Graphic EQ; 10 x 4 (40) RGB backlit macro buttons; plus the ability to add a Waves upgrade.

“The SD5 has some DiGiCo added extras as well,” adds Gordon. “The D5 Live was the first ever console to have an integrated light bar, so of course, the SD5 has that as well. We’ve also included keyboard illumination and convenient headphone hooks to save you having to borrow a drumstick to hang up your headphones.

“The D5 was at the forefront of the live world moving over to digital mixing and SD5 is the perfect way of taking that pioneering spirit to the next level.”

In full motion: FoveaHD makes NAB debut

See Calibre UK at NAB 2012, Booth N1817, 16-19 April 2012, Las Vegas

Cost-effective HD and SD motion compensated standards converter with real-time noise reduction and image enhancement

British video image processing hardware manufacturer, Calibre UK will introduce the new FoveaHD MEMC motion compensated frame rate converter into the broadcast marketplace at NAB 2012.

“The FoveaHD is a completely new motion compensated standards convertor designed for cost-effective and smooth SD and HD broadcasting. Typical applications for FoveaHD include newsgathering, mobile operations, outside broadcasting and live events to studio dubbing and satellite broadcast communications,” says Tim Brooksbank, Chairman at Calibre UK.

The convertor has multiple SD and HD inputs and outputs to enable upconversion, downconversion, cross conversion, as well as converting between all common frame rates. Adding to its functionality, the FoveaHD convertor is equipped with 3G-SDI and Analog I/O. FoveaHD provides motion compensated HD and SD standards conversion at the price of a standard linear video converter.

FoveaHD also has powerful image restoration capabilities for archive conversion, a valuable library asset.

VITC embedded time code is supported and includes automatic delay and correction.

The 2U rack system has control via Ethernet or front panel keyboard ensuring smooth integration.

“The introduction of FoveaHD follows the success of our VideoExcel series broadcast grade universal format converters and frame synchronizers, which will also be on show at NAB alongside the latest HQView530 video scalers, format convertors and scan convertors aimed at the professional video market,” adds Brooksbank.

Calibre UK will exhibit on booth N1817 at NAB 2012 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA between 16-19 April 2012.
