Christ the King Church Enhances Sound with NEXO Line Array

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Christ the King Church in Bellingham, WA recently completed an overhaul of its sound system, awarding the installation contract to Clarity Media Group of Portland. Clarity provided the best solution for the task at hand, outfitting the 1,500-seat church with a 20-box NEXO GEO S12 line array.

“The church wanted a system capable of accommodating a worship service and in addition, have rider acceptability to bring in concerts,” states John Harrel, project manager, Clarity Media Group. “The NEXO GEO S12, consisting of eight S1210 boxes per side, is configured as an LCR and was chosen based on its smooth, even coverage as well as its musicality and output. Our client wanted a center cluster rather than front fills and flown subs, so we recommended four GEO S1230s which met their requirements and are tucked away very discretely above the pastor’s podium position. The previous system was an eyesore.” The system also contains four NEXO RS18 Ray Sub cabinets flown, two per side in cardioid mode. Two NEXO NX4x4 and one NX4x1 amplifiers power the system.

“The NEXO system’s ability to maintain uniform coverage despite having a low trim height was key in choosing it for this application,” states Travis Cibolski, Clarity co-owner and designer of the system. “The net effect is that the system delivers uniform, transparent sound to all areas, and with full bandwidth!”

Christ the King Church has 6,000 members in its congregation with two campus locations. The church band consists of 6-10 musicians on average who, according to Harrel, are very discerning when it comes to good audio (one of its members is a signed recording artist).

The church previously installed a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital console at front of house, chosen for its ease of use by audio volunteers.

UK Digital Console Manufacturer DiGiCo Chosen For Live Music Production At 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards

UK-based digital console manufacturer, DiGiCo, was the live music console of choice at the 54th Annual GRAMMY® Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, as specified by longtime show production partner ATK AudioTek. The 3-1/2 hour music celebration and ceremony garnered the second highest ratings of any GRAMMY airing with approximately 41 million viewers.

A combination of five of DiGiCo’s newer SD10 consoles (two as ‘redundant’ backups for monitors) along with one of its larger format SD7s handled FOH and monitor duties—for a total of 400+ I/O’s and 256 mic preamps distributed between 6 SD Racks—among four engineers in three locations within the Staples Center arena.

The entire PA system was powered by a versatile Optocore fiber optic network, which made it possible for the consoles to tie together seamlessly and also allowing the signal path to stay 100% digital from the mic preamps to amplifiers. Additionally, the Optocore network cut the traditional massive wire clutter down to merely two strands of fiber per console.

“The show’s producers continue to raise the bar in broadcast entertainment year after year and we needed to follow suit with the technology,” said Mikael Stewart, ATK’s production mixer and VP Special Events. “By using the best and most advanced tools, we guarantee the highest fidelity for every performance. The sonic quality of the DiGiCo consoles was one of the biggest assets this year, in addition to the Optocore infrastructure that allowed complete flexibility and accessibility.”

The process to vet the DiGiCo consoles began several years ago, when ATK began to contemplate making a switch from the consoles that had been used for nearly a decade. ATK’s Stewart along with audio consultant Jeff Peterson were instrumental in the decision to bring DiGiCo onboard and into the mix.

Peterson designed the show’s PA and console system and functioned as the systems engineer during the event, with assistance from audio consultant Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher. Ron Reaves was at front-of-house on an SD7 mixing all the musical performances alongside with Mikael Stewart, who handled all the non-music production assets on an SD10. On stage right and left respectively, Tom Pesa and Mike Parker facilitated monitor mixes for the artists on both performance stages on a pair of SD10s (with an additional two serving as ‘redundant’ backups).

“There was a noticeable difference in how the system sounded this year,” recalled Peterson, “and the comments and compliments came from touring and recording engineers alike. It’s not that the sound was bad in previous years by any means, but the overall intelligibility and the quality of the audio was noticeable. There was detail that we had never heard before, which we attributed to the addition of the DiGiCo consoles.”

“Not surprisingly, DiGiCo offers the most flexible, high performance range of digital audio mixing systems available today,” added Group One Ltd president Jack Kelly, DiGiCo’s US distributor. “With the expanding I/O and processing requirements of most of today’s large productions, including the recent GRAMMY awards show, the DiGiCo SD Range of consoles are ideal solutions for today’s engineers.”

More Gain Before Feedback Achieved at Rose Bowl and Super Bowl Thanks to RND 5045

BUENA PARK, Calif.—An ongoing issue with ref mics appears to have been resolved with the use of the new Rupert Neve Designed Portico 5045 Primary Source Enhancer developed for, and distributed by, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. A case in point was the recent use of the unit by Jack Bowling of ATK AudioTek at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and the Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

Bowling had the chance to demo the RND 5045 unit prior to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to explore the possibilities for its use in resolving certain issues of this specific application. “Kevin Kimmel from Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, having worked with me in the past, knows I project manage and mix the UCLA football games and also mix the Tournament of Roses Game at the Rose Bowl,” states Bowling. “He initially introduced me to the RND 5045 suggesting it might help achieve more gain before feedback and provide more clarity on the referee microphone. I was curious to see what effect it would have, and after some patching and a further discussion of various parameters, we tried it out and I was impressed with the change the unit made.”

Bowling said the Rose Bowl PA is a distributed system with all speakers pointing toward the field, and because of this, a great portion of the reverberant energy works its way onto the field, making for a challenging situation. “It was only through experimentation that I was able to hear the effect and appreciate the change it made to the ref mic,” says Bowling. “The 5045 did an excellent job tightening up the ref’s voice by attenuating a great deal of that reverberant energy.”

Because of the success he had with the RND 5045 at the Rose Bowl, Bowling took the unit on the road to Indy for the Super Bowl where he used a Yamaha M7CL digital console at his mix position and two Sennheiser MKE-2 Platinum mics connected through a dual switch to two Shure Axient transmitters and receivers (only one element is used at a time, the additional system is used as a backup). “The RND 5045 was great! I had limited time to tune the ref mic and was very pleased with the result. I used the 5045 on an insert with a Cedar DNS-1500 and an XTA Parametric EQ and ended up with a ref mic that sounded very natural and had plenty of gain. I am always looking for a way to improve the clarity and squeeze just a bit more level out of the ref mic and this unit did both.”

Rupert Neve Designed Portico 5045 Popular for Referee Mics

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The new Rupert Neve Designs Portico 5045 Primary Source Enhancer is becoming increasingly popular as an added tool for audio engineers on referee mics during sporting events, as recently witnessed by the installation of a unit at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas for the Valero Alamo Bowl. Clarity Media San Antonio installed the unit at the 66,000-seat Dome. The Alamo Dome joins other notable sports facilities where the unit has been used or are installed including Notre Dame, Northwestern, Green Bay Lambeau Field, Cowboy Stadium, Reliant Field in Houston, University of Phoenix Stadium, and UCLA at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

The request to Clarity came after a call from Ben Sturgis, Sr. Audio Visual Tech, Convention, Sports, & Entertainment Facilities, to Ben Strizu, Co-Owner, of Clarity Media Group. “Clarity had been analyzing the Dome’s sound system overall because they were having problems with their ref mics,” states Strizu. “After hearing a demo by Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, we felt the unit would fulfill the Alamo Dome’s needs.”

Once Sturgis had an opportunity to hear the unit, he was hooked. “We use the RND 5045 on referee mics because the biggest issue we were fighting was not getting enough gain out of their mics without feeding back,” states Sturgis. “After Clarity installed the unit, it was the first time we could turn down the refs’ mics as opposed to turning them up. The 5045 gave us an additional 10db of gain before feedback.” In addition to sporting events, the RND 5045 is used for public address announcements, trade shows held at the venue, and whenever handheld mics are required.

The Dome also houses a Yamaha M7CL digital console, and in the 7,000-seat Illusions Theatre located at the north end of the complex, Clarity Media installed a NEXO GEO S12 line array used as a portable system. The GEO S set up is configured with six boxes per side, PS10s for front fills, and two NXAmps (one 4×4 and one 4×1) power the entire system.
