Yamaha YCATS Training Moves Toward Future In Networking

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Training Sessions (YCATS) is moving in a new direction with their console training programs. This year, YCATS has created two new console classes in order to eliminate the repetition between the CL, QL, M7CL and LS9 seminars as these consoles share many of the same software features. The new classes will initially be held at HB Live during the first week of August, HB Live is sponsoring a CL/QL Series Essentials Class in North Haven, CT and ATR/Treehouse is sponsoring the same class in Warwick, RI.

Console Operation – Level 1 is for those with little or no familiarity with Yamaha live sound consoles. Console Operation – Level 2, is more of an intermediate to advanced class designed for those familiar with the basic functions of Yamaha digital consoles. This new training format will allow YCATS more efficiency in terms of customer time. It will also reinforce that the software of Yamaha digital consoles is the same, and a user familiar with one should have no problem operating another. Right now, the largest demand is for training on CL, QL, M7CL and LS9; all sharing similar software.

In addition to the new Console Operation Levels, YCATS is adding “Digital Sound Reinforcement – Dante” and “CL/QL Series Essentials”. “DSR – Dante” is a one-day class covering design and use of Dante networks with Yamaha products as well as several third party products (i.e. Shure ULX-D and Aviom D800). “CL/QL Series Essentials” is a class for those who have been trained on the M7CL and LS9 and covers all new features with the CL and QL consoles and the set up of Dante networks.

Martin Audio MLA Continues Hyde Park Sound Evolution At BST

Proving last year that London’s controversial Hyde Park festival site could be uniquely protected from noise leakage into the surrounding neighborhood by deploying Martin Audio’s award-winning MLA technology, promoters AEG Live adopted a similar solution for this year’s Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park festival—but with significant enhancements.

While Capital Sound again deployed MLA and MLA Compact to guarantee coherent site coverage, Martin Audio’s R&D Director Jason Baird, was determined that new optimizations would enable them to eke out as much as an additional 3dB at front-of-house without increasing offsite pollution.

As a result, 102dB(A) was achieved for McBusted, with 73dB(A) recorded offsite, comfortably within the maximum allowable of 75dB(A), while both Tom Jones (during his louder numbers) and Black Sabbath nudged 103dB(A).

Baird explained that the journey to accomplish this had begun three months earlier; with the concept tested and proven on the Glastonbury Festival delay rig the week before.

“We conducted the propagation tests based on what we learned last time around,” he said. One of the key offsite measurement points identified by both Westminster Council and acoustics specialists Vanguardia at Hyde Park was on top of flats in Mayfair’s nearby Upper Brook Street. “When I visited the property last year, I was able to look at the complete spectrum of the signal,” says Baird. “You could hear there was only LF and low mid that was contributing to the A-weighted measurements and we realized that if we could reduce that frequency band we could have a better differential.”

And so his R&D team set to work on the optimization routines across the full frequency range to improve the differential between on- and off-site levels without extending latency––and this trial optimization will in time feature in new data firmware. While Baird maintains that testing will remain ongoing he says the success at Glastonbury gave him the confidence to deploy it on additional arrays in Hyde Park including house left side hang and the two delays nearest to Park Lane.

He describes these early tests and the additional increase of around 2-3dB in max FOH levels over the previous year as “encouraging and significant”.

Capital Sound’s Technical Manager and Systems Designer, Ian Colville, confirmed, “It all worked well and there were no issues with the three arrays we used the new optimization algorithm on.”

His site design replicated last year’s when the stage was reoriented through 30° to point it away from sensitive offsite areas, and included 10 delay towers (in two rings of four plus one ring of two). However, there was one exception. “We dropped a delay position [in Ring 3] which didn’t need to be there because the design of the back of the field changed,” he said.

For the main PA, Capital deployed two hangs of 16 x MLA and 1 x MLD Downfill per side, with 12 x MLA and 1 x MLD Downfill for the sidefills. The sub array consisted of 21 x MLX in a broadside cardioid array, with a further 11 enclosures back facing.

The three delay rings comprised between seven and nine MLA element hangs (supported by MLD Downfill and MLX subs). Ring 3 featured eight MLA Compacts. These were set at distances from the stage of 295, 524 and 688 ft. (for the MLA Compacts). Distance from FOH to stage was 165 ft.

Capital and Martin Audio deployed a team of technical heavyweights, including Chris Pyne, who handles Martin Audio product support for SE Asia and has worked closely with Capital since piloting Kylie Minogue’s mix in the 1990s; Capital had Dave Roden babysitting consoles and the accomplished Toby Donovan once again acting as system engineer while Martin Connolly was the account manager.

With FOH engineers no longer worrying about trading offsite noise pollution with audience sound levels, it meant they could really focus on the mix they wanted and at the same time appreciate the musicality of the system.

One visiting sound engineer Chris Madden (working with Little Mix), had nothing but positive comments. “I used the Martin MLA system about two years ago with Jessie J and I enjoyed it then,” he said. “But I think it was even better this time. It’s a very interesting and remarkable piece of equipment …I didn’t EQ it at all at BST and it sounded great.”

Matteo Cifelli, FOH engineer for Tom Jones, who performed on the final Sunday, was equally effusive. “I was very happy with the results we achieved, the mix immediately sounded just as it was conceived,” he says. “This is the sign of a good cabinet, and also of a well tuned system.”

“I was very pleased with the purity and musicality of the cabinet. I also appreciated the consistency in frequency response at different levels. The sound image was among the best I have ever heard on a large system. Even mixing off center, I could hear all the reverbs and details of my mix clearly and the presence and sweetness on the vocals was great, in your face and never harsh.”

Summing up Jason Baird says, “What FOH engineers want at festivals is plenty of headroom and not to worry about offsite restrictions. Having reduced the low mid and LF spectrum this year, we’ve been able to further ensure this, and that means the power, depth and definition of the system can also really shine too.”

Four Join Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems “A” Team

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. (YCAS) has announced the appointment of four industry notables to positions on the marketing and technical teams.

Steve Armstrong spent close to 20 years as an independent rep in the Northwest and Northern California representing many top lines including Dolby Lake, L-Acoustics, and NEXO. He also held the position of North American Director of Sales at JBL for 12 years in 1994. Previously, Steve was tour director for two major product roll outs and involved in the design and installation of several major installations, most notably, Bayside Church in Roseville, CA; Herbst Theater and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco; and the Hult Center in Eugene, OR. In his new position as Speaker Systems Application Engineer at YCAS, he will support the NEXO product line as well as Yamaha branded speaker systems.

Chad Cooper began his career at Capitol Records in the A&R department during college. He then worked for the Walt Disney Company at the Disneyland Resort for the past 28 years as both a Live Sound Engineer/Technician and Manager, mixing upwards of ten thousand shows in his career at Disney, then becoming a manager in the technical services department in charge of the flagship Hyperion Theater in the Disney California Adventure Park. As Applications Manager, Chad is responsible for YCAS Technical Support.

Patrick Killianey joined YCAS as Network Systems Applications Engineer in late 2013 with over 15 years of experience in Pro Audio, Automation, and Commercial Sound. Working with TASCAM, AMX and M-Audio, Patrick was involved in product development, market expansion, and customer education initiatives. He also spent seven years operating his own business – South Coast Logic – providing system design, project management, and automation programming services for premiere dealers across the country. Patrick’s focus at YCAS is on the mass transition towards networked audio, acting as an internal champion and an educator to the industry.

Marcel Mauceri has been appointed to the position of NUAGE Technical Marketing Specialist. His music and audio experience range from live performance, songwriting, and recording to audio post-production work for independent feature films. Prior to joining YCAS, Marcel held multiple positions over fourteen years, including Echo Digital Audio, a research and development company located in Santa Barbara, CA. where he managed global sales, interfaced with clients as the go–to tech person, and was a contributor to Echo product development and OEM projects for Mackie and Gibson guitar.

Yamaha CL V2.0 Now Available

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced the availability of Version 2.0 for Yamaha CL Series Digital Audio Consoles. This most recent update includes enhancements for sound reinforcement applications as well as mix-minus capabilities for the broadcast market, broadening the range of applications where CL Series performance can be advantageous. One significant enhancement in V2.0 is discovery and head amp control for the new, compact QL Series that also inherits CL Series features and performance. A QL console can function as both monitor mixer and I/O rack, for example, while a front-of-house CL console can remotely control the head amp gain of the QL console’s I/O.

Other new features in CL V2.0 include DCA Roll-Out: Channels assigned to DCA groups can be instantly called up to the console faders for enhanced operational flexibility; output DCA enables the Stereo/Mono bus masters, Mix bus masters, and Matrix bus masters to be assigned to DCA groups. Mix Minus, an important feature in broadcast applications is now provided; with one simple operation the signal from a particular channel can be removed from a specified bus.

With Read Only Scene Memory, it is now possible to create read-only scene memories. A new Daisy Chain Insert feature allows two devices to be inserted into one channel or bus for enhanced processing freedom. A GR Meter (dynamics meter) Option within the Channel Name Display will show the Dynamics 1 and Dynamics 2 gain reduction meters in the channel name display.

Future CL updates include built-in Dugan automatic mixing similar to the new QL Series and additional support for broadcast applications.

SYMETRIX RADIUS 12X8 DANTE™ NETWORK DSP IS THE BACKBONE FOR CHICKIE’S AND PETE’S CRAB HOUSE AND SPORTS BAR

ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY – JULY 2014: What started as a late-night effort between two brothers in 1987 to perfect their mother’s secret recipe turned into Crabfries® and launched their fledgling restaurant, Chickie’s and Pete’s Crab House and Sports Bar, to critical and commercial success. ESPN recently proclaimed the establishment to be the “Number One Sports Bar in North America” and Maxim Magazine deemed it the “Greatest American Neighborhood Bar.” Now a well-established Philadelphia favorite, Chickie’s and Pete’s is expanding its reach and recently opened its 26th location in Atlantic City’s Tropicana Resort & Casino. As with all of the other Chickie’s and Pete’s locations designed and installed by Cherry Hill, New Jersey-based Pro Systems, the new one uses Symetrix processing. This time it’s two SymNet Radius 12×8 Dante network audio DSPs paired with two SymNet xIn 12 and two xOut 12 audio I/O expanders for a total I/O count of 48 by 40.

Pro Systems’ Rich Stout and Jim McCann designed, programmed, and installed the new system. “For the Atlantic City location, the client wanted an upscale sports bar feel consistent with their ‘Best Sports Bar’ award from ESPN,” said Stout. “Every Chickie’s and Pete’s location that we have installed has incorporated Symetrix processing, and they’ve always been pleased with the sound quality and ease of use. At Atlantic City, we went with an HDMI 1080p solution with lots of individual audio zones. To accommodate all the inputs and zones, we chose two Radius 12×8 processors paired with two each xIn 12 and xOut 12 breakout boxes. The Radius’ integrated Dante network capacity made it easy, reliable, and inexpensive to route audio from box to box.

In addition to the Symetrix backbone, the system consists of Crown amplifiers feeding JBL Control and AE Series loudspeakers across 39 zones. Two Crestron HDMI DM switchers support 38 by 64 channels of video/audio, and several Crestron V15 touch panels enable end user control of audio, video, and lighting from a variety of strategic locations.

Rich Stout commented, “The client has no idea about the underlying complexity of a system like this nor should they have to. The trick is to make it simple enough that anyone walking up to the Crestron panel can run the entire system. With Symetrix and other premium hardware vendors we achieved that goal at Atlantic City, and it is now one of Chickie’s and Pete’s favorite locations.”

Martin Audio MLA™ Breaks Record At Glastonbury

Martin Audio’s groundbreaking Multi-Cellular Loudspeaker Array (MLA) system has made Glastonbury history by delivering the highest sound levels to the audience without exceeding noise pollution levels beyond the perimeter.

Making its Glastonbury debut, the system deployed on the Pyramid Stage was impressive in every respect, employing cabinets from the entire MLA™ range of loudspeakers. This comprised a total of 72 MLA for the main hangs, eight MLA Compact for stereo infill at the pit barrier and four delay positions of 14 MLA each. The latest addition to the range, the MLA Mini was also featured, providing stereo infill behind the FOH control structure and onstage coverage of artists’ guest viewing platforms. A massive broadside array of 38 MLX stretched across the entire width of the stage to provide sub-bass support to the entire system.

The company’s unique MLA technology enables very fine control of how each array covers its designated audience area. Their own amplifier and DSP channel, a total of six in each MLA independently control acoustic cells housed within each cabinet. This control allowed RG Jones system engineer Mark Edwards to specify exactly what SPL and frequency response was required across the audience, with the intelligent software automatically controlling the array to produce that result. This amounted to just a 6dB drop off over the 985 ft. long audience area, with incredibly even frequency response.

“We used our proprietary computer software to figure out how to drive each cell in each array to direct sound just at the audience, and then cut it off sharply just beyond the audience to dramatically reduce noise pollution,” says Martin Audio’s R&D Director Jason Baird. “As a result, headliners including Arcade Fire and Metallica could play at 104-105dBA – this is the first time such high levels have been achieved in the history of Glastonbury as noise limits are really strict.”

More than 150,000 fans listened to headline acts Metallica, Arcade Fire, and Kasabian, as well as The 1975, Elbow, Rudimental, Nitin Sawhney, and Dolly Parton, mixed on the MLA system.

Having persuaded the festival production in 2007 that RG Jones Sound Engineering was the right company to run audio services on the Pyramid Stage, Simon Honywill said, “I believed that MLA was the right system for the Pyramid since I first heard its extraordinary fidelity and learned about its unique abilities. Having used it at the past two Glastonbury Abbey shows, it was natural to suggest to Dick Tee and his team that it should take its rightful place on this iconic stage. I think it has more than proved itself here – I spent a considerable amount of time out in the audience and have never heard the field covered so well. And people in the crowd were openly complimentary about the volume and clarity too.”

There was also effervescent praise from the stream of FOH engineers over the weekend.

One of the biggest draws of the weekend was Metallica, engineered by Mick Hughes: “MLA is a new system to me, a new experience. I was surprised how easy it was to get the mix I wanted out of it. When I first used it I thought ‘whoa’ there’s some serious horsepower here. It just sounded really alive; I wouldn’t shy away from using it again.”

One of the most enigmatic performances was from Lana Del Ray, engineered by Max Bisgrove: “In half a song, I could get out what I needed from the MLA system. Great clarity, great power, it’s by far my favorite Glastonbury mixing experience so far.”

Dave McEwan, FOH sound engineer for Nitin Sawhney, remarked: “Glastonbury was the first time I’ve used the big MLA, and I’m really impressed – great imaging, 3D, even 4D sound. You can dive in and enjoy, it’s another sort of PA! I’m hoping to use this at the Royal Albert Hall for Nitin in September. I love it; it’s a great product, a super sounding system, lush and hi-fi, with lots of depth.”

The 1975’s engineer, Jamie McLuckie, adds: “At some festivals you have to tweak the bottom end, but MLA was nice and easy. The system sounded fat, with nice clarity and nice high end too. I couldn’t really fault it.”

For John Carroll, MD of RG Jones Sound Engineering, Glastonbury has been the affirmation of what he’s known for some time: “Martin Audio’s MLA is the next generation and there’s nothing out there to match it. Our continued support from Martin Audio is second to none.”

Summing up, Jason Baird says: “It was my career highlight back in 2008 working on our very first Glastonbury, but with MLA this year, it’s been topped. To see the massive audiences in complete unison front to back enjoying the performances, combined with the constant stream of smiling faces at FOH, it’s been the showcase for everything that Martin Audio and MLA stands for.”

"It would become unwieldy if we tried to build more capability on top of its existing structure. So we decided to start from scratch. We recognized that our new software had to be fast, and it had to let the user create his or her own work environment. It needed a powerful graphics engine that could keep pace with a quick-thinking designer."

Jones and Godoy succeeded. Not only will Danley Direct operate on a Mac or PC with interchangeable files, it will do so with a fluidity that encourages exploration and creativity. The software supports multiple-window operation, and rendered objects can be rotated and otherwise manipulated without requiring re-rendering. "No other loudspeaker modeling software can do that," stated Hedden. Jones added, "With that kind of speed and transparency, Danley Direct is not going to waste anybody's time." Because it uses the ubiquitous SketchUp as its drawing environment, it's easy to create spaces either from scratch or by importing the numerous file types that SketchUp accepts (e.g. .dxf, AutoCAD). Of course, Danley Direct can import Danley DDT files, and, like DDT, Direct training will count toward CTS continuing education credits.

Although not nearly as flashy as its smooth graphics engine or its transparent workflow, Danley Direct's underlying mathematics and the Danley product data that feed into it are honest and correct. That, of course, is of the utmost importance. "Danley has always supported third-party independent measurements," said Jones. "The model you build in Danley Direct will be as close to the reality of the subsequent installation as any reasonable person could expect. This software is not designed to sell Danley products; it is designed to properly model them so that our users will have successful projects. And that is what will sell Danley products."

FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS ED CHERNEY HAS USED HIS ATC SCM25As TO MIX EVERYTHING

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – JULY 2014: Ed Cherney needs no padding on his resume. A veteran producer and engineer with 35 years logged in the control room, Cherney has worked with the top talent in the industry, including Iggy Pop, Bob Seger, Bette Midler, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, Jann Arden, Jackson Browne, Keb’ Mo, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones, to name just a few. His work has earned him six Grammy nominations and three wins, along with seven TEC nominations and five wins. He is a founding member of Producers and Engineers Wing of The Recording Academy and served as the Governor of the L.A. Chapter of The Recording Academy. Until last year, Cherney was also an avid, collector of studio reference monitors, learning to work around the faults of each model before relegating it to the closet when a newer model came through the door. That cycle ended with the arrival of a pair of ATC SCM25A 3-way nearfield monitors. Cherney now uses his ATC SCM25As for almost everything he does because they’re exciting to listen to and because the work he does on them translates flawlessly on any other pro or consumer system.

“I am always looking for speakers because they’re my eyes in the studio, my window to the world,” said Cherney. “I get a lot of inquiries from younger engineers, asking me if I can recommend a good pair of monitors for five-hundred bucks. I can’t. And it’s crazy that they’ll spend thousands on microphones and outboard gear without first giving themselves the one tool they need to actually hear what they’re doing. It’s like an artist buying expensive paints and then turning out the lights. That said I’ve had a hard time finding the ideal speaker at any price. I guess I’m something of a collector now.”

Cherney first heard a pair of ATC SCM25As at a studio in New York, and he liked what he heard. Shortly thereafter, he was working at a studio in his hometown of Chicago that had no good options for monitors. “I spoke to Brad [Lunde] at TransAudio Group [ATC’s U.S. distributor] and he sent out a pair of ATC SCM50ASLs for us to try. They were spectacular as well! We could turn them up loud, and the low end was defined, the midrange was smooth and silky, and the high end was sweet. The sound was thrilling; it could wash over me and punch me in the chest. These were the first mid-size speakers that could give me the experience of the soffit-mounted loudspeakers that the big studios have.”

He continued, “I’ve been dissatisfied with 2-way speakers in the past. The challenge is always to get the right vocal tone and volume, and it often depends on which side of the crossover the vocal is sitting. Sometimes the same singer can be below the crossover in the verse and above it in the chorus. In the past, I always took my mixes around to different systems – different speakers, my house, my car – to make sure the vocals were sitting in the mix correctly. Now that I have the ATC SCM25As, I rarely have to do that anymore. The vocals sit nicely in the midrange driver, and I’m always within a half dB. Every song. For the first time, I really trust the quality of the mixes in the studio. I don’t have to take them out and check them. I nail it and they translate to the rest of the world. That’s a huge improvement.”

Cherney has already used the ATC SCM25As on a number of projects. He produced, recorded, and mixed the main title for the Disney film Planes called “Nothing Can Stop Me Now,” as well as Robben Ford’s Bringing It Back Home and Eric Burdon’s Till Your River Runs Dry. He mixed Love for Levon on DVD, CD, and broadcast using the SCM25As, and he mixed Road to Forever by Don Felder of the Eagles. Currently, he’s working on a debut album from Athena Perez, a rising country artist from Chicago, and a new Bette Midler album.

In addition to how well his mixes translate on the ATC SCM25As, Cherney is also inspired by their clean, fatigue-free volume. “If I’m recording drums, I like to turn it up!” he said. “If the band’s in the control room, I have to turn it up! When I’m doing the final balances, I may be down around 75dB, but getting there, I want to feel it pop, physically! I want to move air in the room! With the 25s, I can. And I can do it all day long and still be as clear-headed and energized at the end of the day as I was at the beginning. My ATC’s make recording and mixing music much more fun.
