Shaping a Better World: Arup Deploys Pexip Globally

Large-scale enterprise-wide videoconferencing connects professionals

Independent professional services firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists, Arup have deployed the Pexip® Infinity scalable software platform worldwide. The deployment will enable Arup’s 11,000 staff across 38 countries to use high definition video, voice and data collaboration and will also be used to connect to Arup’s clients.

“In Arup, we aim to introduce new, forward thinking, innovative and simple to operate technologies into our business. The deployment of Pexip Infinity will not only reinvent how our company communicates internally but will also change how we communicate with our external clients,” explained Roy Salfarlie, Head of AV, UKMEA AV Media Services at Arup.

Simen Teigre, CEO at Pexip said: “The way in which Arup have deployed our technology is testament to the simplified, interoperable and virtualized way in which our Infinity software helps people to collaborate. We look forward to enjoying a partnership with Arup for many years to come.”

Pexip ensures simplicity meets functionality

“Initially, within our proof of concept for next generation virtual meeting rooms, we were evaluating bridging solutions from three different vendors. However, we found these to be more complex than needed – they also required proprietary hardware and could not achieve satisfactory interoperability and HD video integration with Microsoft® Lync. Pexip Infinity was brought in through a revised vendor list. It met our requirements for a software-only solution and we had it working globally in less than two hours. We were really impressed,” explained Chris Ellen, Unified Messaging Team Lead at Arup.

Arup were traditionally using Cisco Jabber™ but wanted to extend their mobile video portfolio by introducing Microsoft Lync. “Using Pexip Infinity means you can dial in and use the same PC or device for a video call but at increased quality. We don’t have to license additional software clients either which is an attractive value proposition,” explained Ellen.

Video conferencing for today and beyond

Arup staff are issued with a personal Virtual Meeting Room with a PIN number for security. Individual users can control their conferences and view presentations from their own mobile phone or tablet.

“Our existing video infrastructure was physically restricted by the number of hardware boxes in our network. With Pexip Infinity, there’s no restriction on the number of people that can use the system. The platform is always on and always available, which enables the team to connect instantly whenever collaboration is required in their workflow,” said Ellen.

“Unlike traditional DSP-based MCU’s, Pexip’s conferencing nodes are virtual machines that can sit on either a VMware® or Microsoft Hyper-V infrastructure making use of standard server architecture. For Arup, minimal to no investment is required to start deploying the solution as we can utilize existing infrastructure. Being virtual also means conferencing capacity can be increased within minutes and the platform is inherently redundant.”

Arup intend to extend the solution to incorporate client meetings. “We can now use the Pexip WebRTC functionality for external meeting participants. In the past we had to ship a copy of Cisco Jabber™ and provision a user account. This was cumbersome for everyone involved, it introduced a delay and had a cost attached to it. With Pexip Infinity we now just email a URL and external callers can experience professional quality video via their web browser,” explained Ellen.

“As an early adopter of Infinity, we have been involved in beta testing and providing feedback directly to the Pexip development team. The openness we enjoy with Pexip is refreshing and it helps us to plan for the future. Pexip Infinity is a good strategic fit for Arup.”

Audinate Enhances Dante Controller 3.5 with New Advanced Capabilities

Portland, OR January 23, 2014- Audinate, the inventors of Dante, have released Dante Controller version 3.5, a updated release of their free networking management configuration and monitoring application. Several powerful new features have been added providing advanced real-time network monitoring functionality, including multicast bandwidth usage, clock health monitoring and latency management statistical information. These enhancements enable you to quickly identify and fix potential issues on the network, while preserving Dante Controller’s hallmark ease-of-use characteristics.

Dante has become the defacto standard and dominant networking technology in the professional audio industry. Built on existing networking protocols and standards, Audinate’s Dante is a plug-and-play networking solution which delivers ultra-low latency and tightly synchronized media, while simplifying installation and configuration of digital media networks. Dante is the most interoperable digital media networking solution available and has become the most specified technology by system designers, installation contractors and end-users.

“Many of the new features in Dante Controller 3.5 were implemented to directly meet specific customer requirements”, says Gary Southwell, VP of Product Management at Audinate. Southwell adds, “Dante has rapidly become the market leader and the dominant media networking solution for audio networking. Dante Controller 3.5 includes many features that AV and IT professionals could only dream of a few short years ago.”

What’s New in Dante Controller 3.5

Significantly Enhanced Latency Reporting
•New histogram-based reporting and tracking of transmitter latencies – provides at-a-glance information about the latency performance of audio flows for supported devices.
•Latency histograms indicate if latency play-out settings are properly configured, and also provide an overall view of the health of the network.
•This feature helps solve one of the biggest challenges in the industry: It allows an operator to quickly see if an audio flow has been properly configured, and also indicates if underlying network issues could potentially develop into an audio quality problem.

Improved Clock Health Monitoring
•Clock health is now tracked on a per-device basis via dedicated performance histograms. This enables the quick and easy detection of difficult-to-diagnose network issues which are impacting clock accuracy – such as clock traffic bottlenecks, and low-performance external word clocks.

New Preset Tool Suite
•New preset system exposes XML-based network configuration presets for use in off-line configuration tools. This simplifies the setting up of new networks, and the reconfiguration of existing networks. Ideal for integrators, and large multi-use end-user networks.
•Presets are further enhanced to enable simpler switching between standard configurations and special event configurations. Provides greater confidence in the ability to share audio network configurations for multiple uses and/or user groups.

Redundant Network Connection
•Enables visibility of primary and secondary networks at all times. Redundant devices can still be seen and managed via the secondary network in the event of a problem with primary network connectivity.
•Simplifies redundant network set-up, and allows the operator to easily verify that both networks are properly configured.
•Provides real-time notifications about connectivity status on both primary and secondary networks.

New Channel Grouping Capability
•Allows simple viewing and configuring of large numbers of device channels, in groups of 16.
•Each group can be expanded then collapsed when set-up is complete.

Improved Network and Device Status Information
•Network and device information has been enhanced and restructured across two tabs (including a new Network Status tab) to provide a clearer and more useful overall picture of the network.
•New notification icons provide up-front, real-time information about a range of network and device events.

Symetrix SymNet Edge Processor Defines Video Conferencing at the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington

MOUNT VERNON, VIRGINIA – JANUARY 2014: The Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington opened recently just outside the gates of Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, roughly fifteen miles south of Washington DC. Not only is the $45 million building the leading scholarly research facility for America’s first President, it is also filled with state-of-the-art technology that allows scholars-in-residence to videoconference with colleagues around the world. A SymNet Edge Dante networked audio DSP system with comprehensive conferencing features, including Acoustic Echo Canceling (AEC), delivers robust, high-quality audio for the library’s six video conferencing systems, as well as background audio and paging services. A dedicated SymNet Radius 12×8 DSP together with a custom Crestron computer control interface serve as the heart and brains of the library’s recording studio.

Richard Derbyshire of Shen, Milsom & Wilke’s Washington, D.C. office designed the sound reinforcement system, and IES Communications of Roanoke, Virginia installed it. Jim Hogan, A/V project manager with IES Communications, explained, “This is a high-profile, high-visibility installation, and the expectation is perfection. We’ve done a number of Symetrix installations, and they always go smoothly. The technical support from Symetrix is excellent, and the sound quality and stability of the units are great. The modular SymNet Edge system gives us tremendous flexibility with regard to inputs and outputs as well as customized processing.”

The sound reinforcement system and conferencing systems are located primarily in the conference wing of the library, where two larger conference rooms and two smaller conference rooms join the library’s signature lecture and conferencing space, The David M. Rubenstein Leadership Hall. A massive eighteen-foot by eight-foot micro-tile screen forms the focal point of Rubenstein Hall and allows the library’s scholars-in-residence to connect with individuals and groups across the country and around the world. Four SymNet Edge frames are outfitted with eleven AEC cards, two 2-Line analog telephone interface cards, three analog input cards, and two analog output cards, all working in conjunction with two SymNet xIn12 and two SymNet xOut12 I/O expanders. The units are integrated using the DanteTM network audio protocol. All of the conferencing systems benefit from Symetrix’ advanced AEC hardware and DSP algorithms.

In addition, the library staff has use of a small audio and video recording studio with which to create educational and other materials in-house. Hogan centered the studio workflow on a SymNet Radius 12×8 processor. He used its open architecture to design custom recording and playback functionality that users control via an intuitively laid out Crestron interface, thereby enhancing their productivity by providing them with efficient, easy to use tools.

Barix Audio Signage Solutions Give Screens a Voice

Multichannel audio streaming solution engages consumers on mobile devices in retail environments

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, January 22, 2014Barix comes to ISE 2014 and the Digital Signage Expo (DSE) with a unique retail solution that enhances the shopping experience for consumers and adds value for retailers through mobile connectivity and synchronized promotional content.

The unique solution aims to give the screen a voice, engaging consumers at shopping windows and inside stores through visual content and associated audio streams. A free Barix smartphone app called Barix Audio Point, to be available in traditional App Stores, prompts consumers to scan a QR Code for stream access, which provides relevant and captivating audio content in synchronization with on-screen video. The combination brings higher awareness to promotions, store branding and other messaging through deeper engagement with shoppers – and addresses the retailer’s goal of increasing basket size.

At ISE 2014 (February 4-6, RAI Exhibition Centre, Amsterdam, Stand 8-E275) and DSE (February 12-13, Las Vegas Convention Center, Booth 1716) Barix will demonstrate a complete audio signage solution with screenFOOD, a dynamic in-store merchandising company whose content management system automates video delivery. The Barix solution can work with any Digital Signage player to achieve this multi-sensorial approach, with Barix encoding and streaming high-quality audio through access points near each screen. Those access points enable the Wi-Fi connection that delivers audio to mobile devices in perfect harmony with video playing out on screens.

The complete solution gives systems integrators and end users an all-in-one package that is quick to deploy, with ongoing reliability. Multichannel audio capacity additionally supports multiple streams, allowing retailers to provide audio signage content in several languages.

Barix CEO Ronni Guggenheim believes the bring-your-own-device trend in retail makes audio signage a natural step in advancing the customer journey, from redeeming special coupons delivered alongside mobile streams to receiving information about online shopping after stores have closed.

“The act of seeing and listening together raises the grade of perception, and through this solution retailers can give their customers a more complete experience that raises the potential to drive purchases,” said Guggenheim. “Barix excels at moving audio over IP networks with very minimal delay, and our audio signage solutions feature content management systems from screenFOOD and other suppliers to help retailers deliver an enjoyable in-store audio visual experience to consumers.”

screenFOOD CEO Pierre Farine believes that this concept advances communication at retail touchpoints to a new level, moving past solitary audio or visual to bring greater context to the shopping environment.

“Good sounding audio helps to focus customer attention and extend their journeys into the mobile universe while on premises,” said Farine. “Overall, this solution breathes new life into visual screen content. Barix also shares our philosophy of high-quality, reasonably priced technology and customer-centric solutions, and we see this as a unique opportunity to bring an innovative and exciting retail solution to market.”

Systems integrators can add more value by using the same network architecture to separately deliver Barix in-store radio solutions with dynamic ad insertion; and live paging and intercom. Retailers can deploy the latter at help points alongside display screens to expand customer service channels.

Barix: We Move Audio (www.barix.com)
Barix supplies simple and reliable solutions and components to systems integrators and end users worldwide. We move high-quality audio across IP networks, adding value to customer solutions for more than a decade with hundreds of thousands of devices installed worldwide. Background music distribution with dynamic advertising insertion for retail shops, bars and hotels; public address solutions for schools and public spaces; and intercom and entry systems for facility surveillance, protection and security are among the many applications of Barix solutions.
