DANLEY LOUDSPEAKERS REMEDY NEIGHBORHOOD NOISE COMPLAINTS AT ATLANTA’S 24/7 IHOP CHURCH

ATLANTA, GEORGIA – JANUARY 2013: IHOP Atlanta is a 24/7 church that spans the time between its frequent services with continuous prayer meetings, a fact that lends sincerity to its full name: International House of Prayer Atlanta. In the year that followed after its October 2004 founding, IHOP rapidly transitioned to the 24/7 cycle, and the prayer meeting that convened on February 12, 2006 is still going without interruption! However, noise complaints from neighbors, engendered primarily by the high-energy rock bands that play a few times a week, threatened the church’s M.O. To correct the problem, IHOP Atlanta hired Pensacola-based A/V integration firm Soundscapes. Now, Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers, which have tremendous pattern control even at low frequencies, focus energy on the congregants and away from the walls. As a result, the “listen-to-leak” ratio is greatly improved, and the church is enjoying Danley’s clean, transparent sound as a bonus.

“Danley’s pattern control is the key to this installation,” said Langston Holland, owner and chief designer with Soundscapes. “I flew three rows of three Danley SH-100s. The patterns hit the sidewalls at about four feet, which puts church members in the coverage as they walk the aisles praying, but deflects excess energy down to the carpeted floor. Moreover, the coverage patterns from each row just kiss the patterns of the rows before or after, so you primarily hear sound from a single loudspeaker, no matter where you are.” To make that work, the first row is facing almost straight down, the last row is at 45 degrees, and the middle row is intermediate. Holland hung them as low as possible without threatening sight lines, thereby increasing perceived SPLs according to the inverse square law.

Because music is such an important component of IHOP Atlanta’s services and prayer meetings, Holland avoided “over-delaying” the middle and rear speakers, a trick that helps locate sounds to the stage via the precedence effect but that also tends to smear them out, which is most noticeable on staccato elements like rim shots. Instead, each row of Danley SH-100s is delayed per its actual distance from the stage. A Peavey Media Matrix delivers the processing, including a 95Hz crossover for the church’s existing subwoofer array. Three new QSC amplifiers join three existing QSC amplifiers to power the system.

To add excitement and dimension to their mixes, Holland installed the new Danley SH-100s with stereo output. But to avoid unintended consequences of operator error, he blended the center loudspeaker so that everybody gets at least some left and right coverage. “They’re grinning ear to ear,” he reported. “They’ve never actually heard their stereo effects before, and now they’re hearing delays ping back and forth and the subtle tails of reverbs. With the old system, their console was a total mess of radical EQ adjustments, but with the Danley speakers, everything is basically flat. The few minor adjustments are for aesthetics and impact, not to fix problems.”

The new Danley system also gives IHOP Atlanta more clean headroom than it had previously. “That was initially a problem,” Holland said. “It sounded so good that they didn’t realize they were pushing louder than ever!” He inserted some limiting to curb their exuberance. Measurements taken at the neighbor’s house before and after the new Danley system was installed demonstrate that everything above the subwoofers is completely fixed and there is no perceptible or measureable energy there. “The band runs 104dB SPL C-Slow for their Thursday night youth services, and it’s pristine in the auditorium,” said Holland. “Inside the neighbor’s house it measures 50dB SPL unweighted at about 60Hz for about four minutes before and after the preaching, which is the loudest portion of their set.”

SAN ANTONIO’S FAMOUS HILTON PALACIO DEL RIO SIMPLIFIES MEETING ROOM FUNCTIONALITY VIA SYMNET SOLUS 8 STANDALONE FIXED I/O DSP

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – JANUARY 2013: With San Antonio’s gorgeous downtown River Walk just steps to the west, the city’s well-booked convention center across the street to the east, and the Alamo historic site a block away to the north, the Hilton Palacio del Rio is at the center of a fabulous Texas experience. It delivers the perfect mix of luxury, location, and event support and wins over first-time visitors, earning their repeat business. The hotel possesses over 27,000 square-feet of flexible meeting space split between the 4th floor and the 22nd floor. Recently, the hotel gutted those areas to modernize both their aesthetic and their functionality. Audio/video integrator Good Thunder Provisioning of Montgomery, Texas designed and installed the new system, centering it on four Symetrix SymNet Solus 8 open-architecture DSP units.

“The renovation of the 4th & 22nd floor Meeting Rooms & Ballrooms was undertaken on very fast track – you might call it a hyper track,” said Robert Slaughter, proprietor of Good Thunder Provisioning. “The start date for the demolition of the existing building interior & audio system was July 15, and the first use of the new system was September 27th.” The incredibly short timeframe required advanced planning on the part of everyone involved and tight coordination with the general contractor, the architect, the in-house audio/visual provider (Swank Audio Visual), and the hotel. Slaughter’s sound reinforcement design focused on reproducing high-quality, intelligible speech and engaging foreground music.

Importantly, he kept the interests of the in-house A/V provider in mind. “Too many times we see very high-end, super-technical systems installed in hotels that end up limiting the revenue of the in-house A/V provider,” said Slaughter. “That ultimately limits the commissions paid to the hotel.” The new system exceeds the standards of the International Association of Conference Centers.

With potentially dozens of subdivided rooms, the Hilton Palacio del Rio can take on serious overflow from the nearby conference center or can host sizable conferences or other events all on its own. Input plates in each divisible space provide an XLR input for line-level signals, a CAT6 connection that links to a projector and the rack locations, and HDMI & VGA for connection to a projector or wall-mounted LED monitors. Wireless microphone systems provide the principle audio input for conferences. House music, which is processed by an Aphex Aural Exciter, provides an additional input option. TOA DA-250DH multi-channel digital amplifiers power scores of TOA F-122CU2 full-range ceiling speakers.

Four Symetrix SymNet Solus 8 standalone fixed I/O DSP, each with eight inputs and eight outputs, handle all of the input conditioning, routing logic, and loudspeaker conditioning for the system. As one might imagine, the routing is complex, with numerous zones adding or subtracting speakers in different locations. “Our staff has had a very long and positive history with Symetrix, starting with the Express Cobra series,” said Slaughter. “The Solus is a great product. It’s flexible, easy to program, and great sounding. Adding the Symetrix ARC-2e and the Axiomtek Touch Panel for user control makes the choice of Symetrix a no-brainier. Cost was also a factor, and by using these products we were able to come out better than we had budgeted.”

The user control is made available in two layers. First, twenty Symetrix ARC-2e remote wall panels allow for the line level control of each room section, music level control of each room section, and selection of optional high-pass filtering for improved voice intelligibility. Second, a pair of Axiomtek GOT-5100T-830 touch panels at each rack location duplicate those controls and add room combining, auxiliary input/output routing, and selection of additional music sources. Lighting control will be included in the near future. “The Symetrix ARCs offer a wide range of control features and functions that are flexible and easy to install,” said Slaughter. “They are an excellent choice. Axiomtek Touch Panels are rugged and always work right out of the box. Their reputation is great.”

Once Hotel management heard and controlled the new system, they asked Good Thunder Provisioning to provide new sound reinforcement systems for the hotel’s restaurant and bar areas in the near term and for the lobby next year. The new restaurant/bar system will use a single Symetrix SymNet Solus 8 DSP to deliver two zones with multiple music, cable TV, and iPod inputs. Four Symetrix ARC-2e remote wall panels provide source selection and level control for both zones. Slaughter will use the same TOA loudspeakers and amplifiers to maintain consistency.

ASHLY PROCESSING AND AMPLIFIERS JOIN DANLEY LOUDSPEAKERS AND SUBWOOFERS AT HOPE UNITED METHODIST

TRINITY, FLORIDA – JANUARY 2013: Like many churches, Hope United Methodist Church in Trinity, Florida limped along for many years with an aging sound reinforcement system. As components died, well-intentioned church members replaced them with purchases from the music shop, and things slowly drifted toward poor intelligibility and dissatisfying musical impact. The straw that broke the camel’s back was a series of channel failures on the old analog FOH mixer. They could no longer deal with all of their inputs, never mind the quality of everything downstream from the mixer! Hope United hired Christian Sound Installations (CSI) to start from scratch, and the integrator designed and installed a first-rate sound system that includes Ashly Audio processing and amplification and Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers, subwoofers, and stage monitors.

“Like most mid-sized churches in the current economic climate, Hope United needed to stick to a strict budget,” said Paul Garner, CSI’s owner and chief designer. “Of course, it’s my job to bring the system in at or under budget, but I’m not willing to do that by sacrificing quality, performance, or reliability. Because ultimately, the work reflects on CSI, and no one makes allowances for the budgetary constraints we were working under. They either hear a good system, or they hear a bad system.” Part of CSI’s cost-saving plan for the 450-seat sanctuary was to forgo the acoustical treatments that the church thought was necessary to increase intelligibility. With conventional loudspeakers, they would have been correct, but by using the exceptionally tight pattern control of Danley loudspeakers, Garner was able to keep energy off the walls.

Everything in Hope United’s sound reinforcement system is new. The stage has six Sennheiser G3 wireless microphone systems, a ClearSonic drum shield, and an Aviom personal monitoring system for the drummer. A cutting edge Allen & Heath GLD-series digital console gives the operator the flexibility of a modern digital system with the intuitive feel of a classic analog console. CSI recessed the equipment rack into the wall adjacent to the mixer, and the back of the rack is accessible from a nearby closet. A Tascam hard drive recorder lets the church easily record all of the sermons for easy uploading to the church website.

An Ashly Protea 3.6SP processor provides all input and output conditioning for the new sound system. “I’ve had great success with the entire Ashly processor line,” said Garner. “The bang for the buck I get with the 3.6SP and 4.8SP can’t be beat. For a straightforward installation, they have everything I need, without heaps of stuff I don’t need. Importantly, the audio path and algorithms are clean and natural sounding.” In addition to providing crossovers, limiting, and overall EQ, Garner used the Ashly 3.6SP to signal align the house system with the stage monitors.

Two Danley SH-100s are arrayed roughly twelve feet off the center of the church angled slightly down and out, with a single Danley TH-212 subwoofer covering all of the seats. Two Danley SM-100M low-profile loudspeakers serve as ultra-high-fidelity stage monitors. With an EASE model, Garner determined that the Danley pattern control would yield the most even coverage of all the viable alternatives, but hearing a Danley system sealed the deal. “I brought the client down to my church, where we run a Danley system,” said Garner. “The clarity and impact is so obviously beyond what a conventional system can deliver. They were convinced.”

Three Ashly KLR-2000 amplifiers power the Danley boxes. “The Ashly KLR-Series sounds excellent and has proven to be perfectly reliable,” said Garner. “We’ve put a lot of them in and had zero failures, zero callbacks, and no issues whatsoever. WITHOUT ADDING A SINGLE NEW RIGGING POINT, DANLEY SPEAKERS DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE COVERAGE AT XAVIER UNIVERSITY’S CINTAS CENTER

CINCINNATI, OHIO: The Musketeers men’s basketball team is the standout athletic program at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over the last dozen years, the team has made an appearance in an NCAA tournament in all but one, and Forbes places it among the nation’s top twenty most valuable college basketball programs. The Musketeers play at the 10,500-seat Cintas Center at Xavier University, which was built in 2000. Xavier University recently asked consultant Anthony James Partners and local integrator ICB Audio & Video to update the sound system with increased coverage of seating areas that were poorly covered by the original system. In part because no additional rigging points could be added, the solution centered on lightweight Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers with excellent pattern control and exceptional sound quality.

“The Cintas Center is a large venue, and Xavier University does a good job keeping up with it’s A/V system,” said John Keller, who configured the system and the rigging with ICB Audio & Video. “They wanted the new system to improve upon the old system’s coverage, which had quite a few holes – most notably in the first few rows on the floor. The big trick was that we couldn’t add any rigging points nor add significant weight to the rigging points that existed.

“Of course,” he continued, “the reason you get holes in coverage is because the speaker is delivering the wrong pattern at the wrong location, but the direct and obvious solution of adding new locations wasn’t on the table. Nevertheless, the coverage, efficiency, and relatively lightweight design of Danley loudspeakers allowed us to meet the facility’s goals within those stringent constraints.” An interesting side note, when Danley demo’d its products for the Xavier officials, they responded to its noticeably superior fidelity with a chant that exceeded the most indulgent fantasy of the most optimistic contractor. “They literally chanted, ‘Cut the check!’ and ‘Give the man the P.O.!’ to the head of purchasing,” recalled Mike Hedden, Danley president. Anticipating a chuckle of incredulity, he added, “They really did do that!”

The new Danley system replaced the old system, cluster for cluster. Ten clusters use a pair of Danley SH-96 full-range loudspeakers stacked in opposite orientations to provide complete coverage of the upper and lower bowls. Two additional clusters use an SH-96 with two Danley SH-64s to provide expanded coverage at either end of the bowl. A total of six Danley TH-115 subwoofers hang independently in two rows along the arena’s long axis. Each cluster is dead hung from a single point because a pick point wasn’t possible; the catwalks and other ceiling hardware couldn’t safely support it.

Keller was able to reuse the wiring infrastructure, and ICB replaced the distributed audio system for all of the facilities outside of the bowl with a BiAmp system networked via CobraNet the previous year. A 32-channel Yamaha LS9 console serves as a new front end, with CobraNet output feeding a new QSC Basis DSP system. The two DSP systems share audio via CobraNet. A rack of QSC CX- and PL-series amplifiers power the Danley loudspeaker and subwoofers.

“The coverage and sound of the new system are dramatically better than they were in the old system,” said Keller. “There are no dead spots, and the cabinets work together nicely in the clusters. How that happens exactly is Danley’s magic secret. In the areas that were covered previously, the coverage is now more even. The client is very pleased, and I’m impressed that we were able to swap out all the speakers within a two-week window in order not to conflict with their basketball schedule or corporate sponsors. Using the same rigging points was really the only option to get the job done.”

With a transmission range of 150 ft (45.7 m), the tour guide is not subjected to voice strain and guests can stand at a comfortable distance without crowding.

Technomad Loudspeakers Blanket Snow-Covered Mountains of Scandinavian Ski Resort

BOSTON, January 22, 2013 — The largest ski resort in Northern Europe has amplified the lighting and sound experience for its guests, with Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers as the centerpiece.

SkiStar, located in the Åre municipality in northern Sweden, is giving skiers an interactive experience on the slopes with its new high-quality, multi-zone entertainment system. The Technomad loudspeakers, projected by systems integration company Watt & Volt Sverige AB, communicate the history of SkiStar and deliver atmospheric audio in eight locations. Watt & Volt worked alongside project leader Ljusarkitektur AB, which is responsible for the new lighting structure that accompanies the audio system.

The complete, synchronized system delivers a captivating lighting and sound experience to skiers, with audio originated through zoned DMX-controlled MP3 players.

“This is a completely new concept for ski resorts in the north of Europe, perhaps even beyond,” said Hamrin. “To our knowledge, it is the only system in the north of Europe of its kind, in the way the ambient sounds connect surrounding areas with the lighting installation.”

Watt & Volt, which recently joined Technomad’s European dealer network, chose Technomad loudspeakers for their complete weatherproof construction and ability to withstand harsh outdoor environments — also noting excellent audio quality and broad coverage as benefits.

“There is nothing to compare with Technomad,” says Niklas Hamrin, managing director, of Watt & Volt. “We find the audio quality to be very good, especially considering the extremely rugged build. Future expansion plans include the installation of more Technomad loudspeakers at outdoor gondolas throughout the resort. The gondola systems will include battery-powered, RFID-controllable MP3 players built into ultra-compact, highly protective plastic cases.
