Christie’s New Book of Shapes Showcases Innovative Digital Display Projects Around Globe

Christie® has published and released The Book of Shapes – a “coffee table” style book showcasing projects around the globe that are redefining the use of display technology in everything from retail stores to museums and corporate spaces.

A free download as an interactive iPad app, PDF, or hard copy, the book explores how Christie® MicroTiles® — groundbreaking, modular video building blocks — have allowed architects and designers to introduce inventive, irregular shapes into projects where video, motion graphics and interactive content are applied.

The release of “The Book of Shapes: International Design Inspirations Featuring Christie MicroTiles” coincides with Christie’s large presence at the Integrated Systems Europe trade show in Amsterdam Jan. 29-31, and comes on the third anniversary of the market release of Christie MicroTiles.

The Book of Shapes app features MicroTiles installations from around the world since the product’s launch – with visuals, embedded video and detailed narratives on how the display technology is being used, and the results achieved. The app also includes location maps, reference materials and an integrated version of MicroTiles Designer™ 2.0, a Web-based tool that allows designers and architects to visually plan and specify MicroTiles-driven projects.

iPad users can locate and download The Book of Shapes app free from Apple’s App Store. A non-interactive PDF is also available free of charge, allowing all the showcases and supporting material to be readily viewed on other tablet devices and conventional PCs and laptops.

Designed To Inform and Inspire
“The Book of Shapes is designed to inform and inspire people charged with integrating display technology into projects, and help them think about how having a digital canvas can energize and transform a space, or solve a business challenge, in interesting new ways,” explained Kathryn Cress, vice president, global & corporate marketing, Christie.
.

London Stock Exchange Atrium, a Project Featured in Christie's Book of Shapes

“We’ve been amazed how architects, retail designers, pro AV and interactive experts have all taken advantage of the opportunity to introduce shapes into design concepts,” added Cress. “They’ve gone so far beyond a display world that was defined forever by rectangles, and the remarkable thing is we’ve likely had just a taste of what’s possible.”

The Book of Shapes celebrates projects across several continents, and is sorted by vertical categories: Retail Environments, Museums & Entertainment, Broadcast Television, Events & Shows, Higher Education and Corporate Spaces.

Among the featured projects is a virtual mountain range at the History Colorado Center in Denver, massive sweeps of MicroTiles in corporate spaces like Deutsche Bank’s Asia-Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong and the Telstra experience centre in Melbourne, Australia. Portable and easily configured, MicroTiles have also been used extensively at temporary exhibits such as global expos, trade shows and fashion events.

Exploring Possibilities
The Book of Shapes explores possibilities – projects where MicroTiles have been “disappeared” into walls, built into furniture, and radically transformed retail and lobby environments. The technology has prompted a re-think on the approach to visual messaging and marketing in public or shared spaces.

One of the most ambitious projects featured in The Book of Shapes involves the London Stock Exchange’s main office in Paternoster Square, where several multimedia canvases totaling 508 MicroTiles envelop the space. The project powerfully reflects the kinetic energy of the financial markets, and is used as a compelling visual backdrop for ceremonies welcoming newly listed companies.

That project is also explored in detail in a different, dedicated digital publication, “The Blue Book: How MicroTiles Helped Make an Impact at the London Stock Exchange.” A free copy can be downloaded inside the Book of Shapes app or from Christie by visiting this web page: http://www.microtiles.co.uk/moreinformation.php?tab=bluebook

The launch of Christie MicroTiles three years ago represented a revolution in display technology. Some 30,000 units are now in use globally, and new projects are steadily switching on. During the recent holiday season, for example, 425 MicroTiles were set into the street front windows of the Barneys New York flagship store for an “Electric Holiday” done in partnership with The Walt Disney Company.

Flexible, Modular Display Technology
With their modular design, Christie MicroTiles can be arranged into virtually any shape or scale of display wall. The lightweight and compact rear projection modules measure 16 inches across by 12 inches tall, by 10 inches deep and fit perfectly in retail settings, corporate offices, museums, airports, broadcast sets, indoor sports stadiums, control rooms and numerous other applications.

Christie MicroTiles automatically self-calibrate for color and brightness and have built-in sensors that monitor each LED’s performance. Each tile detects its neighbor and adjusts its image to optimize the overall display. With tiny seams between tiles, Christie MicroTiles produce a virtually seamless canvas with an unlimited number of super-fine pixels. With robust screens that are cool to the touch and high resolution images that are crisp and clear even close up, Christie MicroTiles are perfect for interactive displays.

WHEELER BROTHERS OUTFIT TEXAS STUDIO WITH A 32-CHANNEL API 1608

AUSTIN, TEXAS – JANUARY 2013: A notorious musical group has chosen an API 32-channel 1608 to outfit their unique studio in Texas. The Wheeler Brothers, a five-piece band hailing from Austin, Texas, plays heartfelt, soul-bending Southern rock suffused with the welcoming twang of indie country. The band works hard, playing a show roughly two out of every three days, and it has never played a hometown gig that was not completely sold-out. Their popularity has increased with the release of their debut album, Portraits, which has been met with critical acclaim. Summoning superhuman energy, the Wheeler Brothers are busy writing and recording their sophomore album between live dates at an expansive personal studio in Tarpley, Texas. A 32-channel API 1608 analog console is at the heart of the process, providing engineer Craig Lawrence with authentic sound and the immediacy of real knobs and faders for every track.

The 32-channel API 1608 is loaded with plenty of time-tested API processing. Twenty API 550b four-band EQs, twelve API 550A three-band EQs, and four API 560 graphic EQs sweeten the band’s instruments, not the least of which are their voices. “The board has that classic API sound… it’s open and punchy,” said Lawrence. “It has a big sound that’s really appropriate for the Wheeler Brothers. The EQ is precise but not clinical, and I love the way the bandwidth narrows as I go deeper into a cut.”

The 32-channel API 1608 interfaces with a 48-channel Pro Tools HD rig and a Studer A827 two-inch tape machine. An Endless Analog CLASP system mediates their interworking by recoding to and pulling from the tape with appropriate latencies. “One of the greatest things about having thirty-two analog API channels is that everything is right there in front of me,” said Lawrence. “I can just reach over and twist an EQ knob. The guys in the band can just lean in and turn things up or down. It’s very physical and intuitive.”

ABOUT API (AUTOMATED PROCESSES, INC.) Established more than 40 years ago, Automated Processes, Inc. is the leader in analog recording gear with the Vision, Legacy Series and 1608 recording consoles, as well as its classic line of modular signal processing equipment.

Christie Interactivity Kit Now Shipping

Christie® is pleased to announce that the Christie Interactivity Kit is now shipping. Powered by Baanto™ ShadowSense™, the Christie Interactivity Kit is a distinctive solution for adding multi-touch interactivity to any digital display.

MicroTiles equipped with the Christie Interactivity Kit

Designed in pieces that fit perfectly around Christie® MicroTiles®, the Christie Interactivity Kit can be configured into 84 different sizes. The kit can accommodate practically any large format display up to 21.4 feet wide and 6 feet high, or a Christie MicroTiles array measuring up to 16-units wide by 6-units tall.

The easy-to-use, field-installable kits simply attach around the display wall perimeter and plug into a computer USB port without need for drivers. Windows® 7 automatically recognizes the Christie Interactivity Kit as a multi-touch device and no manual calibration of sensors or cameras is required. Using breakthrough Baanto™ ShadowSense™ technology, Christie Interactivity Kit offers excellent performance with high touch accuracy and fast response times that support up to 18 touches on a large-format display.

Christie Interactivity Kit – The Simple Answer
“Many large-format touch technologies struggle with touch accuracy and response time, especially with multi-touch,” explained Richard Heslett, senior product manager, Business Products, Christie. “Typically you have to manually position and calibrate cameras, and install special drivers or software that must be running on the computer in order for the system to work.”

Christie’s Interactivity Kit solves this problem by detecting the video wall’s size and configuration, and simply connecting to the computer’s USB port. When used with Windows® 7, which offers native support for multi-touch, the Interactivity Kit is automatically recognized as a multi-touch device.

“In addition to saving the time and effort of calibrating sensors and installing drivers,” continued Heslett, “the Interactivity Kit is both lightweight and small for easy shipping and maneuvering into buildings while special brackets for MicroTiles handle the alignment.”

Applications for Christie Interactivity Kit
“With their stunning image quality, colors and resolution, Christie MicroTiles are the perfect medium for large format interactivity,” added Heslett. “For example, on broadcast sets, where MicroTiles are very popular, an on-air commentator can analyze a sports event or election results using the Interactivity Kit on a large presentation wall. Because of their modularity, MicroTiles and the Interactivity Kit are both easy to move around and flexible in size, so they are ideal for temporary events and trade shows. Rental stagers can purchase one set of gear and create a multitude of different shapes and sizes with it.

“Other great applications include museums and public institutions where visitors want to explore and learn, higher education where students want to learn and connect with each other, and corporate spaces where information needs to be shared and analyzed by colleagues in a collaborative setting.”

Benefits of Christie Interactivity Kit:

-True multi-touch performance with excellent accuracy, resolution and response rates for large-format applications.

-Up to 18 touches on a 16 by 6 array (21.4 feet wide by 6 feet high).

-Ease of setup with USB connection and no drivers required.

-No manual calibration of sensors or cameras.

-Recognized by Windows® 7 natively as a multi-touch device.

-Seamless integration with Christie MicroTiles and Christie JumpStart.

“Now shipping, the Christie Interactivity Kit is an exciting breakthrough technology for creating large-format, multi-touch displays that was not possible until now – there is nothing like it. This technology opens up all kinds of new possibilities for connecting people with each other and with information, and for delivering impactful, branded experiences,” Heslett concluded.

ASHLY KLR-3200 AMPLIFIERS POWER UP DOWNSTREAM CASINO AND RESORT

QUAPAW, OKLAHOMA – JANUARY 2013: With its parking lot in Kansas, its main entrance in Missouri, and its gaming facilities and guest accommodations in Oklahoma, Downstream Casino Resort is quite literally on top of the region’s historic tri-state junction. The Quapaw Tribe-operated facility opened in 2008 and attracts approximately two million visitors annually. Building on its tremendous success, Downstream Casino Resort undertook an ambitious expansion plan to add a six-story tower with 155 additional guest rooms, restaurants, event spaces, and spa services. The Tribe hired A1 Audio of nearby Branson, Missouri to design and install a comprehensive distributed audio system, and A1 Audio delivered, in part by specifying a modest rack of high-powered, low-cost Ashly KLR-3200 amplifiers.

A1 Audio got its start in the 1960s in the energized venues of Las Vegas, Nevada. Its reputation for putting on successful shows with nary an unprofessional hiccup launched successful ventures in Hollywood, California, and, later, Branson, Missouri. Today, the Missouri office upholds the unwavering commitment to service that made the company so successful at its start. For years, Downstream Casino Resort has relied on A1 Audio for live show rentals and technical support. When plans materialized for the new expansion, the Quapaw called on A1 Audio to bring that same level of professionalism to its new facilities.

For reasons outside of A1 Audio’s control, the timeline on the new project was incredibly tight. “Massive crews from all the trades swarmed the new construction,” explained Pete Savel, vice president of A1 Audio. “At one point when we were pulling cable, they had something like 250 guys on drywall! It was a huge undertaking.” Despite the rush, the new system is elegant and refined, in consonance with the architecture and professionalism of the casino and resort staff.

In strategic locations throughout the tower, eighty Community loudspeakers from the 70-Volt D4, D6, and D8 wide-dispersion series deliver articulate, full-frequency content. In a few locations with less than six inches of ceiling space, low-profile Community D4LP deliver comparable performance. Yamaha DME-N series processors provide all input conditioning and matrixing, and an AMX system provides user control via an intuitive and engaging iPad interface. Five dual-channel Ashly KLR-3200 amplifiers power the entire system.

“The Ashly KLR-Series amplifiers are tremendously powerful, yet remarkably affordable,” said Savel. “Nothing else comes close on a performance-to-cost basis. We’ve used them in several installations now, and they worked from day one without a single glitch. That’s the kind of reliability we count on.”

ABOUT ASHLY AUDIO Ashly Audio Inc. is recognized as a world leader in the design and manufacturing of high quality & high performance signal processing equipment and power amplification for use in the commercial sound contracting and professional audio markets. Barix Accentuates Dynamic Audio Insertion for Businesses at Digital Signage Expo

Insertion of attention-grabbing facts before advertisements help keep customers focused on business message

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, January 29, 2013Barix will highlight its complete IP audio streaming and insertion solution at Digital Signage Expo (Las Vegas Convention Center, February 27-28, Booth 151), demonstrating how businesses can cost-effectively deliver targeted, dynamic messages to consumers as part of a comprehensive, custom audio program.

The Barix solution incorporates partner MOH Technology’s Adiosys ad insertion software with its Exstreamer IP decoders for audio playout. Andrew Stadheim, president of Barix Technology, U.S., says that businesses can use the complete solution to more effectively reach consumers — notably through insertion of news headlines, weather and other local-interest facts prior to ads and promotional messages.

“You’re hearing this more at gas pumps and in retail stores that place significance on audio programming, where businesses offer a teaser to entice the consumer, and follow with a business-related message,” said Stadheim. “It’s about engaging the listener up front with the goal of driving revenue. Your customers are more likely to tune out if you feed an advertisement right away.”

The Adiosys software offers a simple way for businesses to upload, schedule and target ads, jingles and promos, and simultaneously enable fact-insertion. Meanwhile, Barix Exstreamer devices are IP addressable, with the ability to receive and playout targeted messaging in one or more zones or locations. This ensures that businesses can deliver the right messages to the right locations.

“This gives retailers and other businesses two key advantages: reliable, high-quality audio playout using Barix IP audio devices; and the ability to create a personalized, broadcast-quality audio stream with dynamic messages for each of your locations,” said Stadheim.

Barix offers several Exstreamer device models for in-store media solutions, including the Exstreamer 110 IP audio device with song, title and other stream information in a front panel window; and the Exstreamer 205, which includes built-in amplification to reduce costs and infrastructure at playout locations.

Technomad Loudspeakers Upgrade Audio in French Football Stadium

New system complies with Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) standards thanks to broad audio dispersion, high voice intelligibility of Noho loudspeakers

BOSTON, January 28, 2013Stade Francois Coty, a French football stadium in the Corsican city of Ajaccio, France, has completed audio upgrades compliant to league standards, with seven Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers covering the entire venue.

Home club AC Ajaccio recently transitioned to Ligue 2, also known as Division 2 in the LFP French professional football league. The league-imposed audio upgrades required a higher measure of intelligibility and audio coverage throughout the stadium — a quality the previous audio system lacked.

Systems integration company Atacc International worked with French Technomad dealer Audiopole to develop the new system, ensuring intelligible voice and music is audible throughout the stands. The design also considered financial and structural challenges, including minimal hanging points for the latter. But the challenge of protecting gear in the open stadium air was top of mind for both companies.

“Our main concern was undoubtedly the weather, and Technomad loudspeakers are 100 percent weatherproof,” said Alain Castelli, manager, Atacc International. “They can withstand wind, rain, moisture and temperatures as cold as 0 degrees Celsius in the winter; and as hot as 30 degrees Celsius in the summer. The sea is also nearby, so salt corrosion was another concern.”

Audiopole provided an acoustic study of the stadium prior to installing the seven Technomad Noho loudspeakers in the stands, behind the goals, and within a VIP space and visitors area. The study determined that the Noho was the best model for the project, providing excellent coverage and full-range audio — including ideal sensitivity for speech. The complete system includes Yamaha amplifiers and mixers, a Shure ULX Series microphone, and an automated playout system for security announcements.

“This was our first time using Technomad, and we are very pleased,” said Castelli. “The observed power of the Nohos in comparison to their size is very impressive, and the responsiveness from Audiopole was also excellent.”

Black Diamond™ Motorized

A new and truly unique motorized design utilizing SI’s award-winning Black Diamond ambient light rejection screen technology, Black Diamond Motorized is a sleek and sexy flat panel alternative that actually disappears when not in use, ideal for virtually any environment or application. Utilizing one motor, four custom helixes, and a spool of slender aircraft cable, Black Diamond Motorized silently lowers a thin wing containing the rolled Black Diamond screen downward from a recessed ceiling-mounted cassette. The cable-hung wing then stops, and from it, a small tube quickly emerges and lowers itself down to an adjustable, pre-determined image height, leaving only the image space in sight.

Because Black Diamond screens do not require masking or any black drop material whatsoever, there is no visible material above, below, or on either side of the screen surface, allowing the images projected on Black Diamond Motorized to appear as though they are suspended in air. Unlike flat panel TVs, Black Diamond Motorized delivers zero glare and reflection when used in a bright environment, and by virtue of its industry-leading Black Diamond ambient light rejection screen technology, light scatter is measurably reduced by over 75%. Delivering a next-level entertainment experience while literally disappearing into the room’s existing décor when not in use, Black Diamond Motorized appeals to the senses – and satisfies the needs of - a diverse audience in either residential or commercial environments. Black Diamond Motorized is the ultimate blend of art + science.

SI has a projection screen solution for nearly any budget, any application, and any aesthetic. ISE 2013 attendees are encouraged to visit the Home Cinema Europe stand (#1-N53), see the demo, and learn more about delivering next-level entertainment experiences to a diverse clientele by incorporating Screen Innovations projection screens into their installations.
