SYMETRIX EXPANDS GLOBAL REACH IN THE MIDDLE EAST

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – JANUARY 2013: In response to growing global demand, Symetrix announced an expanded partnership with World Representation Inc. for direct-to-dealer sales in the Middle East. The arrangement was launched at a very successful InfoComm MEA in October. World Representation Inc. is partnering with Symetrix to facilitate sales and help distribute the entire range of Symetrix digital signal processors and control interfaces in the region. The new initiative will guarantee that A/V integrators and other audio professionals in the Middle East will have ready and reliable access to the dynamic range of Symetrix high-end professional audio solutions, including SymNet Edge and Radius Dante network audio DSP, ARC-WEB browser-based control technology, and comprehensive teleconferencing DSP hardware and software.

“This is the next step in our steady growth worldwide,” said Mark Ullrich, international sales manager at Symetrix, who met with interested dealers and integrators at InfoComm MEA in Dubai. “From the numerous meetings I had at the show, it’s clear that there is a lot of excitement for Symetrix products in the Middle East, especially SymNet Edge and Radius Dante network audio DSP. The fact that the SymNet platform features the hugely popular Dante technology for networked audio, as well as a suite of conferencing solutions, all of which can be controlled from your iPhone via ARC-WEB, makes SymNet DSP hardware and software very appealing and competitive.”

“Over past years Symetrix has been enjoying phenomenal success globally as a market leader in DSP,” said Iain Cameron, technical sales manager at World Representation Inc. “Following the introduction of SymNet Express and SymLink, the Integrator Series broke the already well-established Seattle-based signal processing company into the then nascent DSP market. Since that time Jupiter (app based turn-key DSP), Solus (standalone fixed I/O DSP) and the recently introduced Edge and Radius (Dante network audio DSP) have joined this comprehensive portfolio of solutions. Symetrix decision to offer direct-to-dealer sales though World Representation will allow us to offer much closer support to the Middle Eastern and African markets. We look forward to meeting users, integrators and consultants to discuss how Symetrix can provide elegant and cost-effective solutions from the smallest to the largest of installations.”

WITHOUT ADDING A SINGLE NEW RIGGING POINT, DANLEY SPEAKERS DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE COVERAGE AT XAVIER UNIVERSITY’S CINTAS CENTER

CINCINNATI, OHIO: The Musketeers men’s basketball team is the standout athletic program at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over the last dozen years, the team has made an appearance in an NCAA tournament in all but one, and Forbes places it among the nation’s top twenty most valuable college basketball programs. The Musketeers play at the 10,500-seat Cintas Center at Xavier University, which was built in 2000. Xavier University recently asked consultant Anthony James Partners and local integrator ICB Audio & Video to update the sound system with increased coverage of seating areas that were poorly covered by the original system. In part because no additional rigging points could be added, the solution centered on lightweight Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers with excellent pattern control and exceptional sound quality.

“The Cintas Center is a large venue, and Xavier University does a good job keeping up with it’s A/V system,” said John Keller, who configured the system and the rigging with ICB Audio & Video. “They wanted the new system to improve upon the old system’s coverage, which had quite a few holes – most notably in the first few rows on the floor. The big trick was that we couldn’t add any rigging points nor add significant weight to the rigging points that existed.

“Of course,” he continued, “the reason you get holes in coverage is because the speaker is delivering the wrong pattern at the wrong location, but the direct and obvious solution of adding new locations wasn’t on the table. Nevertheless, the coverage, efficiency, and relatively lightweight design of Danley loudspeakers allowed us to meet the facility’s goals within those stringent constraints.” An interesting side note, when Danley demo’d its products for the Xavier officials, they responded to its noticeably superior fidelity with a chant that exceeded the most indulgent fantasy of the most optimistic contractor. “They literally chanted, ‘Cut the check!’ and ‘Give the man the P.O.!’ to the head of purchasing,” recalled Mike Hedden, Danley president. Anticipating a chuckle of incredulity, he added, “They really did do that!”

The new Danley system replaced the old system, cluster for cluster. Ten clusters use a pair of Danley SH-96 full-range loudspeakers stacked in opposite orientations to provide complete coverage of the upper and lower bowls. Two additional clusters use an SH-96 with two Danley SH-64s to provide expanded coverage at either end of the bowl. A total of six Danley TH-115 subwoofers hang independently in two rows along the arena’s long axis. Each cluster is dead hung from a single point because a pick point wasn’t possible; the catwalks and other ceiling hardware couldn’t safely support it.

Keller was able to reuse the wiring infrastructure, and ICB replaced the distributed audio system for all of the facilities outside of the bowl with a BiAmp system networked via CobraNet the previous year. A 32-channel Yamaha LS9 console serves as a new front end, with CobraNet output feeding a new QSC Basis DSP system. The two DSP systems share audio via CobraNet. A rack of QSC CX- and PL-series amplifiers power the Danley loudspeaker and subwoofers.

“The coverage and sound of the new system are dramatically better than they were in the old system,” said Keller. “There are no dead spots, and the cabinets work together nicely in the clusters. How that happens exactly is Danley’s magic secret. In the areas that were covered previously, the coverage is now more even. The client is very pleased, and I’m impressed that we were able to swap out all the speakers within a two-week window in order not to conflict with their basketball schedule or corporate sponsors. Using the same rigging points was really the only option to get the job done.”

ABOUT DANLEY SOUND LABS Danley Sound Labs is the exclusive home of Tom Danley, one of the most innovative loudspeaker designers in the industry today and recognized worldwide as a pioneer for “outside the box” thinking in professional audio technology.

Technomad Loudspeakers Blanket Snow-Covered Mountains of Scandinavian Ski Resort

BOSTON, January 22, 2013 — The largest ski resort in Northern Europe has amplified the lighting and sound experience for its guests, with Technomad advanced audio loudspeakers as the centerpiece.

SkiStar, located in the Åre municipality in northern Sweden, is giving skiers an interactive experience on the slopes with its new high-quality, multi-zone entertainment system. The Technomad loudspeakers, projected by systems integration company Watt & Volt Sverige AB, communicate the history of SkiStar and deliver atmospheric audio in eight locations. Watt & Volt worked alongside project leader Ljusarkitektur AB, which is responsible for the new lighting structure that accompanies the audio system.

The complete, synchronized system delivers a captivating lighting and sound experience to skiers, with audio originated through zoned DMX-controlled MP3 players.

“This is a completely new concept for ski resorts in the north of Europe, perhaps even beyond,” said Hamrin. “To our knowledge, it is the only system in the north of Europe of its kind, in the way the ambient sounds connect surrounding areas with the lighting installation.”

Watt & Volt, which recently joined Technomad’s European dealer network, chose Technomad loudspeakers for their complete weatherproof construction and ability to withstand harsh outdoor environments — also noting excellent audio quality and broad coverage as benefits.

“There is nothing to compare with Technomad,” says Niklas Hamrin, managing director, of Watt & Volt. “We find the audio quality to be very good, especially considering the extremely rugged build. Their loudspeakers provide the appropriate protection considering the large snow amounts and extremely low temperatures, which can drop to between -30 and -40 Celsius.”

Technomad Paris loudspeakers, which provide full-range audio output in a classic column design, were installed at locations where musical reproduction and exceptional bass output were required. Watt & Volt chose Technomad Vernal loudspeakers, the most compact model in the company’s portfolio, at stations where intelligible speech is a priority. Hamrin added that both models satisfy unobtrusive audio system requirements from SkiStar and Ljusarkitektur. The loudspeakers are installed alongside compact, protective, heated cabinets with built-in amplifiers to complete the outdoor installation.

Future expansion plans include the installation of more Technomad loudspeakers at outdoor gondolas throughout the resort. The gondola systems will include battery-powered, RFID-controllable MP3 players built into ultra-compact, highly protective plastic cases.

ABOUT TECHNOMAD
Technomad LLC, founded in 1995, designs and manufactures loudspeaker systems for the professional audio and security/military technology industries. The company invented the first reliable full-range weatherproof loudspeaker and now offers nine models ranging in power from 60-watt loudspeakers to 1250-watt subwoofers — most available in Turnkey PA System packages featuring amplifiers, mixers and other signal processing equipment in pre-wired racks. Barix Supports Crestron Rava SIP Intercom and Phone Technology

Solution delivers first interface to enable peer-to-peer device communication between Rava-enabled touch screens and analog door stations

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND, January 21, 2013 — IP audio and control specialist Barix is pleased to announce support of Crestron Rava™ SIP intercom and phone technology. The Barix SIP firmware will simplify integration of Rava-enabled touch screens with analog devices, such as intercom panels, to enable peer-to-peer communication between devices without a central server. This simplifies Voice over IP (VoIP) integration in residential and commercial deployments.

Crestron Rava touch screens leverage SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) to permit voice intercom, telephone and paging (point-to-point and group) among other applications across the home, office or small business. The inclusion of Barix firmware uniquely establishes compatibility between Rava-enabled touch screens and analog door stations. This allows customers to continue to use existing analog installed devices when upgrading to Rava touch screens, providing seamless IP to analog integration.

Systems integrators, meanwhile, eliminate the time and labor associated with configuring servers to enable SIP compatibility between Rava touch screens and connected devices. Barix firmware allows these devices to discover each other on the network, becoming the first Crestron-approved solution to offer such seamless peer-to-peer device connectivity. The result is a reliable, SIP-compatible solution that effectively bridges analog and digital components within Rava environments.

“We’re thrilled to have Barix support our protocol because it bridges the gap between digital (SIP communication points) and analog door stations,” said Fred Bargetzi, Crestron VP of Technology. “We see many homes with independent door station/intercom systems separate from the home automation system or homes with integrated page-all intercom systems when discrete peer-to-peer operation is more desirable. With support of the Rava protocol, Barix now provides a retrofit solution that seamlessly communicates with the homeowner’s existing door station.”

The Barix solution can be deployed today by connecting a Barix Annuncicom IP two-way audio hardware device directly to a door station. Crestron is also working with companies such as eHolovision, which manufactures a series of intercom entry panels for door stations. Barix will soon add the same functionality to these and other third-party panels equipped with Barix IPAM Series modules. This enables peer-to-peer SIP and Rava compatibility without additional hardware.

Both options also provide digital inputs and outputs for control options, such as activating door strikes. The integration with Barix effectively turns a door station and a Crestron Home Control System into an integrated access control solution for the customer.

“Barix has previously worked with Crestron, developing an Annuncicom device version specifically for Crestron residential solutions. That solution offered an IP interface for point-to-point, full-duplex audio distribution and control between analog and digital devices,” said Johannes G. Rietschel, CEO and founder of Barix AG. “The new solution evolves the relationship, using Barix’s strong IP audio and control expertise to develop a unique solution that reduces infrastructure, simplifies installation and enhances communication across Rava environments.”

Kraftwerk relies on WATCHOUT for Stereoscopic 3D and Live interactivity

German electro pop pioneers, Kraftwerk will use the dynamic interactive and 3D features of Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-image and presentation software, for all on-stage digital scenography at their hotly anticipated tours and concerts’ programme throughout 2013.

Formed in 1970, Kraftwerk began using Stereoscopic 3D for the MoMA concerts and ”Way out West” Swedish Rock Festival in Spring 2012.

WATCHOUT manages projected 3D content on a large stage backdrop creating a powerful abstract presence in front of audiences wearing polarized 3D glasses. Two more WATCHOUT channels feed the flanking LED screens. To create the lighting effects on the four oversized illuminated keyboards, a Pixel-gate LED video controller uses an additional DVI output from the main screen using the WATCHOUT “Tier” feature. The main timeline in WATCHOUT is chasing timecode from Kraftwerk synthesizers (MTC converted into SMPTE). The Kraftwerk synthesizers are also used for live visual interaction controlled via MIDI commands.

The new features of WATCHOUT version 5 enable live manipulation of content. Media objects can be positioned, rotated and moved in 3D in real-time from external control systems, musical instruments, lighting consoles, mobile devices and sensors to control on-screen elements such as images, video, Stereoscopic 3D movies and live feeds as required.

Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director at Dataton says: “Kraftwerk are known for their use of bold graphics and colours. They are using our technology in a very easy to use, yet powerful way to engage audiences around the world. We’re looking forward to seeing Kraftwerk use the new 3D, interactive and dynamic media streaming features of WATCHOUT in 2013 and beyond.”

Kraftwerk at upcoming Dusseldorf and London concerts

Several upcoming Kraftwerk concerts will incorporate Stereoscopic 3D effects as well as 3D sound.

Kraftwerk’s first performance in Düsseldorf, Germany since 1991, performances called 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 are taking place at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen Museum, first from January 11 – 13, then 16 – 20. Like the MoMA shows, Kraftwerk will play one album per date and will be accompanied by 3D visuals, which actually involve audiences. Running alongside the performance programme, a photo exhibition, Kraftwerk, runs from January 11 at the Forum Nordrhein-Westfalen Museum.

In London, Kraftwerk will perform at Tate Modern’s cavernous Turbine Hall for eight nights, first from February 6-9, then 11-14, and are their first live London performances since 2004. The band will perform one studio album in full on each night and combine it with visual backdrops, including interactive 3D projections and animation.
