Jünger Audio’s IBC 2014 Line Up Delivers Perfect Voice Recording

At IBC 2014 (10.A49), dynamics processing specialist Jünger Audio will show its D*AP4 VAP Voice Processor – a unique unit that is designed to make life easier for engineers working in radio stations, TV production voice-over studios and feature film ADR facilities.

What makes this processor so special is the inclusion of Jünger Audio’s proprietary Spectral Signature™ dynamic EQ – a totally new creative tool that offers automatic and dynamic EQ control to balance spectral differences in real-time. By analyzing incoming audio and comparing its spectrum with individually predetermined voice ‘fingerprints’, this clever unit can automatically apply dynamic EQ corrections to give a consistent sound.

For people working in TV voice over and feature film ADR, this facility is a Godsend because it allows them to deal with any changes in a performer’s voice. For example, if a performer has a sore throat on day three of a recording session and therefore sounds a bit different, this clever unit will look at the tonal characteristics of the actor’s voice on day one and automatically adjusts the frequency until both voices match. This ability to deliver consistent sound means that producers save money and time because they don’t have to cancel voice over or ADR sessions while they wait for an actor’s voice to return to normal.

Jünger Audio’s D*AP4 VAP Voice Processor is equally interesting to radio broadcasters who want to create an aural identity for their radio stations. By using similar spectral sound management principles, the unit measures the running program and uses the station master sound fingerprint as a reference. The Spectral Signature algorithm matches all different program elements to this reference signature, thus creating a dedicated ‘station sound’.

Four Join Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems “A” Team

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. (YCAS) has announced the appointment of four industry notables to positions on the marketing and technical teams.

Steve Armstrong spent close to 20 years as an independent rep in the Northwest and Northern California representing many top lines including Dolby Lake, L-Acoustics, and NEXO. He also held the position of North American Director of Sales at JBL for 12 years in 1994. Previously, Steve was tour director for two major product roll outs and involved in the design and installation of several major installations, most notably, Bayside Church in Roseville, CA; Herbst Theater and Great American Music Hall in San Francisco; and the Hult Center in Eugene, OR. In his new position as Speaker Systems Application Engineer at YCAS, he will support the NEXO product line as well as Yamaha branded speaker systems.

Chad Cooper began his career at Capitol Records in the A&R department during college. He then worked for the Walt Disney Company at the Disneyland Resort for the past 28 years as both a Live Sound Engineer/Technician and Manager, mixing upwards of ten thousand shows in his career at Disney, then becoming a manager in the technical services department in charge of the flagship Hyperion Theater in the Disney California Adventure Park. As Applications Manager, Chad is responsible for YCAS Technical Support.

Patrick Killianey joined YCAS as Network Systems Applications Engineer in late 2013 with over 15 years of experience in Pro Audio, Automation, and Commercial Sound. Working with TASCAM, AMX and M-Audio, Patrick was involved in product development, market expansion, and customer education initiatives. He also spent seven years operating his own business – South Coast Logic – providing system design, project management, and automation programming services for premiere dealers across the country. Patrick’s focus at YCAS is on the mass transition towards networked audio, acting as an internal champion and an educator to the industry.

Marcel Mauceri has been appointed to the position of NUAGE Technical Marketing Specialist. His music and audio experience range from live performance, songwriting, and recording to audio post-production work for independent feature films. Prior to joining YCAS, Marcel held multiple positions over fourteen years, including Echo Digital Audio, a research and development company located in Santa Barbara, CA. where he managed global sales, interfaced with clients as the go–to tech person, and was a contributor to Echo product development and OEM projects for Mackie and Gibson guitar.

Yamaha CL V2.0 Now Available

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced the availability of Version 2.0 for Yamaha CL Series Digital Audio Consoles. This most recent update includes enhancements for sound reinforcement applications as well as mix-minus capabilities for the broadcast market, broadening the range of applications where CL Series performance can be advantageous. One significant enhancement in V2.0 is discovery and head amp control for the new, compact QL Series that also inherits CL Series features and performance. A QL console can function as both monitor mixer and I/O rack, for example, while a front-of-house CL console can remotely control the head amp gain of the QL console’s I/O.

Other new features in CL V2.0 include DCA Roll-Out: Channels assigned to DCA groups can be instantly called up to the console faders for enhanced operational flexibility; output DCA enables the Stereo/Mono bus masters, Mix bus masters, and Matrix bus masters to be assigned to DCA groups. Mix Minus, an important feature in broadcast applications is now provided; with one simple operation the signal from a particular channel can be removed from a specified bus.

With Read Only Scene Memory, it is now possible to create read-only scene memories. A new Daisy Chain Insert feature allows two devices to be inserted into one channel or bus for enhanced processing freedom. A GR Meter (dynamics meter) Option within the Channel Name Display will show the Dynamics 1 and Dynamics 2 gain reduction meters in the channel name display.

Future CL updates include built-in Dugan automatic mixing similar to the new QL Series and additional support for broadcast applications.

DK-Technologies Steps Up The DK T7 Game At IBC 2014

DK-Technologies has once again upped the functionality of its competitively priced DK T7 audio, loudness and logging meter by adding Loudness Automation, a software update that is free of charge to existing and future DK T7 users.

On show at DK-Technologies’ IBC 2014 stand (8.E60), this latest upgrade is based on SMPTE timecode and allows the DK T7 to instantly recalculate the Integrated Loudness value up to four hours back in time. DPA Shows Its New d:screet™ Necklace Microphones At IBC 2014

White Mark Designs A New Foley Studio At Moscow’s CineLab

Studio design consultancy White Mark Ltd played an important role in creating a new Foley studio for Russia’s state of the art film sound facility CineLab Ltd. Unashamedly designed to be the best in the world, CineLab’s Foley studio is already attracting projects from both local and international clients.

Based in Moscow and housed in a completely renovated former cold store building on the banks of the Moskva River, CineLab already has 14 studios including three dubbing theatres, a 5.1 mixing room for pre-mixes and TV/DVD work, multiple edit and pre-production suites and sound design rooms. Three of CineLab’s dubbing theatres have Dolby Premier Licenses, and one of these was recently upgraded by White Mark to Dolby Atmos 3D spec.

The facility’s new Foley studio was designed to cater for two very distinctive approaches to Foley recording, says CineLab’s Managing Director Vadim Nerukov.

“Some Foley artists want to close mic everything and then add effects, compression, reverb, etc. afterwards in the control room,” he explains. “Others prefer a more ‘naturalistic’ approach where they use the space and air in the room and real reflections from the walls. In our opinion neither approach is the best – they are simply different. We wanted a room that could cope with both.”

To achieve this result, White Mark worked closely with internationally acclaimed and award-winning Foley artist and sound designer Nicolas Becker, whose credits include Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Ninth Gate, The Pianist, Oliver Twist, The Ghost and Venus In Furs, all directed by Roman Polanski.

White Mark’s managing director, David Bell says: “We designed and built the room from scratch, including every conceivable kind of indoor and outdoor surface. We also incorporated motorized ceiling panels and wall curtains that can be used to modify the room acoustics, and a special floor mounted on acoustic pads that can be tuned to different frequencies by tightening or loosening screws.

Bell adds that White Mark obviously included a conventional control room in its design but after speaking to Becker and watching him work, the company also positioned an additional mixing and recording area in the centre of the live room with a line of sight into each of the studio’s four working zones.

“This dedicated space allows the artists like Nicolas who prefer to work naturally to move around the studio and create sounds to the picture in real time,” David Bell says. “The picture is projected onto screens and the engineer working with him has five microphone positions at his disposal and can literally mix live, building up each scene, sound by sound.”

White Mark installed a 5.1 surround sound system in the Control Room, while the live room, which has four screens in different positions, has a theatrical-style loudspeaker system (Left-centre-Right) behind the main screen. This allows the Foley artist to work to picture and hear exactly what a cinema audience will ultimately hear.

Naturally the studio is filled with props and devices to create new sounds – and there is a dedicated large storage room with a car access dock so that bigger props can be brought in.

“This is, without doubt, the most impressive Foley room I’ve ever seen – and certainly the most impressive we’ve ever built,” David Bell adds. “Of course, having carte blanche to create something special did help – as did the fact that CineLab was effectively built from the ground up so we could incorporate features like the very thick cast concrete floor, incorporating deep pits and water pools of different depths, and the loading dock very early on in the design process.”

Vadim Nerukov says that completing CineLab’s Foley studio involved the most innovation in terms of ideas, design and workflow.

“As our design partner, White Mark has achieved great results with all of the rooms in the facility,” Nerukov says. “In our view they are the best acoustic design company on the market and we’re thrilled with the Foley room – it is quite simply magnificent.”

Recent projects undertaken at CineLab include the mix for the feature film Stalingrad, carried out by Vincent Arnardi, and the mix for Viy, carried out by four times Oscar winning sound engineer Bob Beemer. CineLab has also recently completed the Russian dub of The Amazing Spiderman 2, one of the first projects to take place in its newly accredited Dolby Atmos theatre.

Corporate A/V Company Adds Yamaha QL1 For Fortune 100 Clients

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Sardis Media of Grayslake, Illinois recently took delivery of a new Yamaha QL1 Series Digital Audio Console for use on their corporate A/V projects. For over 30 years, Sardis Media has produced videos, meetings, and special events for Fortune 100 corporations, non-profits, and A-list associations. Clients include Advisors Excel, Motorola Solutions, Baxter, MorphoTrak, RustOleum, & RZIM. The company purchased its QL1 from Reach Communications of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

Sardis, who also owns a Yamaha M7CL Digital Audio Console, will use the new QL1 on the road as the primary audio console for smaller corporate events that require large event features. “We needed a console that had a lot of power and features but in a much smaller footprint for front of house for our production truck, says company spokesperson Nate Aguilar. Clients are always happy when we save space at FOH so they can fit more attendees in the room. As operators, we love that we don’t have to sacrifice quality when going to a small console like the QL1.”

Aguilar said that being in the corporate events business they are always dealing with more than a few Lavaliere microphones open at one time on stage, and the built-in Dugan auto mixer feature of the QL1 helps manage levels tremendously.

“We knew we wanted a touch screen for quick adjustments and graphic feedback on changes being made, says Aguilar. Most of us on staff at Sardis have a background in graphics or video, so being able to actually see what the console is outputting is important. Also, the built-in Dante network gives us the flexibility to add channels and outputs when needed in small increments, and having the ability to record every input separately is vital.”

Since Sardis already owns an M7CL and loves the operation, Aguilar notes, “it was a no brainer to add the Yamaha QL1 with its minimal learning curve to our inventory.”

BRONXVILLE, NEW YORK: Although the path to Micah Kovacs’ relatively new and successful freelance venture, Micah Kovacs Audio, was not clear to him at the outset, his dedication, professionalism, and knack for making audio work transparently with images guided him down it, nonetheless. Already, his ten-plus years in the advertising and film post industry have earned him Addy, Promax, and Mercury awards, and several awards at juried film festivals. His clients include the Sundance Channel, VH1, L’Oreal, Verizon, NBC, and many other high-profile brands. Whether working out of his home studio for smaller projects or temporarily relocating to a client’s facility for more involved projects, Kovacs relies on the superlative audio quality and reliability of his Metric Halo ULN-2 mic-preamp/converter to maintain a pristine signal path at all times. Like so many in the audio industry, Kovacs stumbled across recording technology while in a high school band. “I was fascinated by the process of recording very early on,” he said. “In college, I joined some other bands and we recorded ourselves with 4-tracks or with digital workstations when they were available. It wasn’t anything close to what I do these days; we weren’t using Pro Tools, for example. But the craft of recording and mixing captivated me.” An art major, Kovacs gravitated toward video in his coursework and secured an internship at a video post-production house after graduating. He worked his way up from production assistant to assistant video editor. “The whole time, I was the go-to guy for any audio work that needed to be done,” he recalled. “I really enjoyed the mix process and learned, through my work there, that there were companies dedicated solely to audio for video.”

From there, Kovacs took a job at NYC’s Pink Noise, where he worked his way up from glorified runner to head engineer in a span of eight years. Then he took a position at NYC’s Verbatim Sound as head engineer and music producer, and a while later – sated with industry contacts and know-how – he shifted to full-time freelance under the Micah Kovacs Audio flag. “Going freelance, I knew I had to upgrade my audio hardware,” Kovacs said. “Most of the audio interfaces on the market, including the one I owned at the time, had a nasty reputation for quickly becoming obsolete as computers and audio software progressed. I needed something that would be portable and more accepting of software upgrades. Moreover, I work with a number of audio programs, including Pro Tools and Nuendo, and I wanted something that would work seamlessly with all of them, now and in the future.”

He continued, “The Metric Halo ULN-2 was the natural choice. Metric Halo is famous for supporting its products [original versions of the company's first interface, the 2882, are still supported for all the latest Mac hardware and software]. In addition, its sound quality and reliability are consistently praised as among the best on the market.” With countless hours logged at his earlier jobs, Kovacs learned what gear was indispensible and what was not. He outfitted his personal studio with a lean, but powerful collection of gear that could travel when necessary. A small rack of outboard gear serves a variety of functions and interacts with a MacBook Pro and iMac via the ULN-2. The ULN-2 also sends signal from the computers to the gear and to a pair of KRK monitors and a pair of Yamaha NS-10s. On the far front end, Kovaks maintains a collection of studio-grade musical instruments for use in original recordings. When necessary, Kovacs can move his studio to a client’s space to complete long-term or quick turnaround jobs.

Understandably, Metric Halo’s free audio routing software, MIO Console, plays a large role in Kovacs’ setup. “I love MIO Console,” he said. “With it, I can switch between my monitors internally, and I can route signals in elaborate ways between internal software programs and my external hardware. I also like the processing the ULN-2 ships with; I’ve been experimenting a lot with the ‘Character’ signal path modeling plug-in. Finally, I was pleased with the service I received from Metric Halo. There’s a ton to learn, especially with MIO Console, and the tech support zeroed in on my particular setup to get me up and running quickly. I had clients wanting service right away, so I didn’t have time to experiment. Metric Halo understood that.”

Red TX Joins The Remote Recording Network

Broadcast audio specialist Red TX has joined Europe’s leading live recording initiative Remote Recording Network. Whilst contributing to managing and engineering music and broadcast assignments on a global and cost-effective basis, RRN offers bespoke solutions that cater for all kinds of transmission, recording, mixing, mastering, duplication and publishing.

Remote Recording Network GmbH had last year joined forces with Dutch mobile recording company Eurosound bv and had integrated the German ‘RemoteTaxi’ enterprise to establish the initial ‘Network’.

Peter Brandt, head of Remote Recording Network and a man with over 30 years’ experience of recording and mixing international rock, pop, jazz, and classical artists, says: “Bringing Red TX into RRN will benefit our European customers by giving them access to a fully digital truck based in Europe that can handle high-end surround sound projects, particularly for broadcast.”

Tim Summerhayes, CEO of Red TX, adds: “I have known Peter Brandt for many years and we have worked together on numerous projects in the past. I am very excited by this collaboration because it allows us to utilize our combined technical resources in a very effective way. Red TX has two state of the art recording units, RED 1 and RED 2. Both are equipped with Studer Vista 8 Digital Mixers, PMC 5.1 surround sound monitoring and Pyramix, Pro Tools and Reaper recording systems. They also have extensive racks of outboard equipment and digital effects, and are internally designed to very high acoustic specifications. RED 2, which is the larger of the two units, will be located as required, between the RRN HQ in Germany and Eurosound bv’s base in The Netherlands, while RED 1 will remain at Red TX’s premises in the UK.

“Our model of using international partners to combine resources and equipment is very valid, especially in a world where businesses need to reduce their carbon footprint as much as they can,” Peter Brandt adds: “By tapping into facilities that are already stationed on different continents, we don’t need to transport huge trucks around the globe. Instead we can ‘travel lite’, frequently only needing to transport an engineer, which minimizes travel costs and keeps our carbon footprint to a healthy low. It also means that we can keep our rates very competitive, too.”

Red TX’s RED 2 unit will make its Remote Recording Network debut in June at the Tuckerville Festival in Enschede, The Netherlands. From there it has a busy summer ahead, working at live events and festivals in various countries.
