NAB 2014: Digital Nirvana Introduces FIFOPro Ingest Back-Up System for Broadcast Production

Creates edit-ready backups of all live ingested media, eliminating the need for manual recording, cataloging, storing and transcoding of back-up tapes

Fremont, CA – Digital Nirvana will give the broadcast industry its first look at the company’s new FIFOPro ingest back-up system at the NAB 2014 convention, to be held from April 5-10th at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Digital Nirvana will showcase this powerful new production tool in Booth #SU11017.

The FIFOPro system was engineered to streamline workflows for news departments and live production applications. Traditionally for SAN back up, broadcasters have relied on recording onto multiple tape decks, one for each feed, with station personnel completing the cumbersome tasks of loading, labeling, cataloging and storing each tape for back-up insurance. In this mode of operation, if the need arises to restore from tape, it must be manually de-archived, taken to the editing bay, loaded and then transcoded into the proper format prior to editing.

With the FIFOPro ingest back-up system, the workflow is automated. FIFOPro continually records and archives multiple HD-SDI feeds on a rolling First-in/First-out (FIFO) basis, retaining all content for 72 hours before deleting it from the system. This data is automatically recorded in an edit-ready AVCi 50 format along with its metadata, including channel, date and time. If original content is lost or damaged, it’s a simple process to find and access the stored media via web browser and export the selected clips to the watch folder for immediate editing.

By eliminating the need for multiple tape decks, transcoding and time-consuming metadata management, the FIFOPro ingest back-up system is the perfect solution to streamline workflows, save time, space and money.

His customers include National Geographic, Discovery Channel, PBS Nova, WGBH Boston, History Channel and Skywalker Sound. Prism Sound Shows New Audio Interfaces at NAB 2014

After an exceptionally successful 12 month trading period, which culminated in a move to larger offices in the USA, internationally acclaimed manufacturer Prism Sound will be using the NAB 2014 platform to introduce post production and broadcaster engineers to its growing family of audio interfaces.

Digital Vision Launches Golden Eye 4 Scanner at NAB 2014

- Customer feedback leads development of new features -

(London, UK) – Digital Vision will launch the Golden Eye 4 film scanner for restoration and archive at NAB 2014. The new scanner incorporates many new features that have been requested by users of Golden Eye 3.

Broadcast Pix Expands Flint Integrated Production Switcher Family

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ will unveil its expanded family of Flint™ end-to-end integrated production switchers at the 2014 NAB Show (Booth SL6325), which runs April 7-10 in Las Vegas, Nev. All three HD models include the same Fluent™ workflow software tools, but provide different input configurations to address different production requirements and budgets.

There are three new Flint models available. The entry-level system, Flint LE, supports three HDMI or analog (composite, component or S-Video) inputs and is now priced at $7,495. Flint LX features four SDI or HDMI inputs for $9,995. Flint LS supports six inputs and offers a choice of six SDI (two of which can be HDMI) or four SDI and two HDMI or analog inputs for $12,995. In addition, all three models include two additional network inputs, which are ideal for presentations and Web pages from remote computers. All three models are available now.

Broadcast Pix will also have two raffles during the NAB Show, providing attendees the opportunity to win a Flint system as well as a new fX3D real-time 3D graphics software package. Raffle rules and instructions will be available at the Broadcast Pix booth.

“Flint has quickly become a popular choice among streaming video professionals, because it provides a complete set of production tools for true end-to-end integration,” said Steve Ellis, general manager, Broadcast Pix. “By expanding the Flint family, we’re making it more affordable than ever to produce live multi-camera productions for broadcast or webcast.”

Introduced last year, Flint handles the entire production workflow, from ingest to distribution. In addition to cameras and file-based graphics and video, its multi-format production switcher allows operators to include cloud-based content from Skype, Twitter, RSS feeds, Google Drive, Dropbox and other resources during live productions. Flint ingests and scales all sources while maintaining constant lip sync.

Flint’s switcher also includes three keyers for layering, each with PiP and customizable DVE. An internal Inscriber CG provides six graphic channels, while a built-in, two-channel clip server stores up to 30 hours of clips and animations in a variety of file formats, including ProRes, H.264, DNxHD and QuickTime animations. Flint’s audio mixer is controlled through an intuitive audio interface with on-screen stereo faders and VU meters, and two outputs allow separate mixes with independent control for master recording and Web presentations.

With up to seven simultaneous output formats, Flint offers built-in HD streaming in a variety of formats and allows live recording on its internal hard drive. Other features include a customizable multi-view, customizable virtual sets, and control of robotic cameras, video servers, external audio mixers, and other devices.

Version 3.0 software, which was announced earlier this month, allows all Flint systems to be tightly integrated with Broadcast Pix’s new fX3D and ReVue multi-channel slow motion replay system. It also includes ClearKey, Broadcast Pix’s next generation chromakey, and new device control of Blackmagic HyperDecks. The software will be available in May as a free upgrade for all Flint systems under warranty.

New FOR-A 4K Compatible Multi Viewer to Make Debut at NAB 2014

Company to introduce the MV-4200, MV-42HSA, and MV-1620HSA multi viewers

(London, UK) – Digital Vision has announced some significant changes to its range of Nucoda colour grading products and its pricing structure. The move comes as a considered response to the increasing commoditisation of the grading and finishing market, and seeks to protect and support Digital Vision’s current customer base while continuing to provide outstanding colour grading tools.

Kelvin Bolah, President, Digital Vision, said, “Over the last few years we have witnessed the destructive and destabilising commoditisation of this niche market. We needed to adapt to the changing landscape, and have taken our time to create a grading strategy that both protects our customers’ investments and our revenues. DVEO Shipping Upgraded Version of Ad and EAS Playout Server — Ad+EAS Serter™ with Channel in Box Features will be Introduced at NAB 2014

San Diego, California – DVEO, the broadcast division of Computer Modules, Inc. (CMI), is now shipping the latest version of its ad inserter and EAS emergency alert system for DVB-ASI or IP. DVEO will debut the new Ad+EAS Serter™ at Booth SU2903 at the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) Show, April 7-10, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Ad+EAS Serter functions as a simple playout server with Ad and EAS capabilities. It inserts emergency alerts – plus video clips, text, and graphics – anywhere on video content, live, on a schedule, or via signaling like SCTE 35. It adds messages to one to four targeted cable or on-air channels or sub channels, or to one to four IPTV channels. The high density system is designed for broadcast studios, cable head ends, and IPTV operators who require an easy to use EAS messaging system to communicate with their subscribers.

The cost-effective Windows® based system is compatible with Trilithic™, Sage™, and Monroe™ EAS Alert generators. It works by decoding the transport stream, overlaying the graphics, and transcoding the result. Alerts can be overlaid anywhere on H.264 or MPEG-2 video content. Messages can be quickly revised in real time, to give viewers critical updates – such as safety precautions, evacuation notices, and locations of assistance centers. EAS audio from EAS systems is spliced into live audio and emergency audio messages are sent to viewers.

“Our newest version of the Ad+EAS Serter supports both splicing and ad overlays. Emergency alerts and messages can be via industry standard methods. It also features a SLATE function that puts up an empty background on which you can type messages,” stated Laszlo Zoltan, Vice President of DVEO. “This system is currently deployed at a major cable company to originate important messages to the entire subscriber base.”

The system ships with a graphics creation application but uses most graphics formats. Graphics can be created in several formats, although bitmaps and “.pngs” are preferred. The position of the graphics, transparency, and fade characteristics can be configured via the management console. Easy drag and drop placement positions logos, text, or graphics on screen.

Graphical elements can be inventoried on the on board hard drive. Large local graphical libraries can be created for quick use under dynamic real world events. For example, the hard drive can store maps showing evacuation routes. The system is also able to mask the entire screen with a static image in case of video input failure or auto bypass via relay. Graphical elements such as fancy boxes, borders, background colors, and identifiers can be used to enhance emergency messages.

The Ad+EAS Serter is also suitable for Public Service Announcement crawls, and as a very flexible video messaging system to a subscriber base. DVEO can also create customized systems to meet customer’s needs.
