THE BAND HEALTH’S SCORE FOR ROCKSTAR GAMES’ MAX PAYNE 3 CREATED WITH METRIC HALO ULN-2

jupiter_keyes.JPGSAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA: Gamers and indie music fans alike are eagerly awaiting the release of Rockstar Games’ Max Payne 3. Gamers are excited because Max Payne 3 represents the latest in the tremendously popular series, which has sold over 7.5 million copies and garnered numerous awards. Indie music fans are excited because Rockstar Games contracted Los Angeles’ groundbreaking noise pop band HEALTH to craft its original score. Individuals who count themselves in both categories are, of course, watching the game’s May release date very closely, as are the members of HEALTH, who are presently blessed and cursed with the soaring creative frenzies that tight deadlines tend to inspire. As a useful tool in capturing the magic of those frenzies, HEALTH has chosen to rely on a Metric Halo ULN-2 interface for much of the tracking and all of the mixing and monitoring.

METRIC HALO’S MULTI-FACETED 2882 INTERFACE FOR LIVE PLAYBACK WITH SANTIGOLD

brady_longwell.JPGNEW YORK, NEW YORK: A casual listen to Santigold’s pop-friendly, genre-defying music pegs it as favorably simple, with hooks that fly under the radar to secretly steal your heart… a theft of which you are only made aware hours later when you find her songs creeping around your brain on endless loop! But to the careful listener, it is apparent that Santigold’s songs take their straightforward form from the complex interrelationships of sonic textures and instrumentation that complement the larger structure. In other words, there’s a lot going on in a Santigold song! To create those textures and to imbue them with the urgency and immediacy worthy of a great live show, drummer/programmer Ian Longwell and guitarist/music director Ray Brady work hard to define a universe of samples that they then play live, relying on a Metric Halo 2882 interface to deliver those sounds more

WRENN HOUSE STUDIOS OPENS DOORS TO HOUSTON’S MUSICIANS WITH NEW API 1608

john_clayton.JPGMAGNOLIA, TEXAS: In early 2012, Wrenn House Studios in Magnolia, Texas rounded out its collection of API gear with a 16-channel 1608 console. From the beginning, the studio was a self-described “API House,” with racks of API processors, 7600 channel strips, an 8200 summing mixer, the 7800 master module and two API 2500 stereo compressors.

“Clay and I have been working with music our whole lives,” explained John Morton, Wrenn House’s chief engineer and partner with the studio owner Clayton Wrenn. “Years ago, I had the opportunity to hear an API preamp in an equipment demonstration, and I was struck by how different the API sounded compared to everything else. It had a sonic quality that’s hard to describe – a richness and fullness. I knew it was what I was after.”

A clear need for a professional analog console encouraged Wrenn House to invest in the 1608, and news of the studio’s high-end API gear spread. Local acts and other area production facilities began asking if they could make their recordings at Wrenn House.

“There was clearly some pent-up demand for an API rig in Houston,” Morton said. “Folks go to Austin when they want the API sound. As far as I know, we are the only API 1608 shop south of Austin at this time. I anticipate a lot of interest from local music and video producers. API has never let us down.”

ABOUT API (AUTOMATED PROCESSES, INC.) Established more than 40 years ago, Automated Processes, Inc. is the leader in analog recording gear with the Vision, Legacy Series and 1608 recording consoles, as well as its classic line of modular signal processing equipment.

SYMETRIX JUPITER AND ARC-WEB PERFORM AT THE COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION

cma_lobby.JPGNASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Although the Country Music Association is perhaps best known for its annual CMA Awards show, the organization is constantly working to support and promote country music. The CMA’s headquarters in Nashville is a hive of activity and is frequently visited by the genre’s biggest stars and its most promising freshmen. Recently, the CMA decided to convert its atrium into a small-scale performance venue for intimate concerts, parties, and meetings. Morris Light & Sound of Nashville installed its sound reinforcement system, relying on the Symetrix Jupiter 8 processor paired with the Symetrix ARC-WEB Internet-based interface to provide system conditioning and intuitive user control that is accessible from the staffs’ smartphones.

“The idea was that, say, Garth Brooks or some other big name could stop by the CMA and play a small acoustic set as a ‘thank you’ to the staff,” explained John more

METRIC HALO ON THE ROAD WITH RISING HIP-HOP STARS MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS

macklemore_ryan.JPGSEATTLE, WASHINGTON – MAY 2012: The team of rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis is making some of the most forward-thinking hip-hop music on the planet. Lewis’ irresistible beats and music form a sophisticated backdrop for Macklemore’s tight rhymes and deceptively easy delivery. Macklemore’s subject matter – drug addiction, consumerism, race, and other weighty themes – resonates with an authenticity that deftly sidesteps clichés to bathe familiar subjects in a fresh light. Lewis, who also handles many of the engineering duties for the duo, recently committed to purchasing a Metric Halo ULN-2 preamplifier/interface so that they could cut studio-quality tracks for their forthcoming album while on the road.

“I’m in the middle of producing a full-length LP with rapper Macklemore,” said Lewis. “I needed a small unit that could deliver audio quality worthy of our debut LP. The goal is for Macklemore to be able to record at home or on the road, tracking vocals wherever he wants or needs to.” Lewis learned about Metric Halo through online research and discussions with audio engineers in their hometown of Seattle.

“One of the largest consumer products for introductory home recording is the two-channel USB or FireWire interface,” he continued. “Almost every company has their own version. Nevertheless, there honestly wasn’t a lot out there that could compete with the ULN-2. Finding high-quality AD/DA conversion is hard, and finding high-quality AD/DA conversion together with fantastic preamps is almost impossible. The Metric Halo ULN-2 was exactly what we needed. It alone could match the quality of vocals we’re tracking in the studio.”

As an active member of the Seattle music scene, Macklemore earned a hometown following early on. But it was with his 2004 release Welcome to Myspace – which was heavily hyped by the then-new social networking site – that Macklemore earned respect and an eager following at the national and international levels. Success begat success, but in combination with a self-avowed drug problem, it also doused the creative flame that had committed so many fresh rhymes and ideas to paper. Macklemore languished for years before a one-month stay at rehab gave him the sobriety and creative perspective he so desperately needed. Now on a mission to make good on his promising start and with three successful post-rehab solo albums, Macklemore has joined forces with Ryan Lewis, and the two are poised to take the hip-hop world by storm with the forthcoming release.

Taking the long view, Lewis cited Metric Halo’s dogged commitment to future-proofing its equipment via upgrades as another excellent reason to go with the ULN-2. “Metric Halo is a company that is focused on the future of pro audio and that’s why I’m so excited to be working with their products,” he said. Later in the year, Lewis and Macklemore plan to follow up the ULN-2 with an eight-channel ULN-8, Metric Halo’s flagship product, for use in their studio.

ABOUT METRIC HALO Now based in the sunny city of Safety Harbor, Florida, Metric Halo provides the world with high-resolution metering, analysis, recording and processing solutions with award-winning software and future-proof hardware.

API TOUTS TENTH 1608 IN ARGENTINA

JESSUP. MARYLAND – MAY 2012: API marked the tenth 1608 delivery to Argentina with the installation of the console at Studio Fort Music. Sold by SL Audio, API’s sole distributor in Argentina, the console joined the studio’s digital platform to create a completely analog recording set-up.

Studio Fort Music’s manager Oscar Gimenez Plett has been active in the Argentinian music scene for some time. He began his engineering career in the 1970s at Studio DISCOS CBS. He then moved on to Sandro’s Studio, Studio Greengo, Ion Studios, Pulstar Studios, Digiart Studios and Del Absto al Pasto before landing at Fort Music.

“API is the mixer brand which I learned to work with,” Plett said. “Once I tried the new 1608, I saw that it has the same audio dimension and quality as the API consoles had back in 1974, when I used more

METRIC HALO’S NEW PRODUCTION BUNDLE USED BY GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING ENGINEER GARY NOBLE

gary_noble.JPGSAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA: Gary Noble is an adept manager of a Twitter feed, a Google+ account, and a blog that will resonate with anyone in the pro audio recording industry. But despite, or perhaps because of his active Internet presence, Noble maintains a busy schedule of recording and mixing sessions. In addition to a long list of highly-respected artists who haven’t yet made it to “household name” status, Noble has worked with Amy Winehouse, Ricky Martin, Estelle, and Whitney Houston, often with producer Salaam Remi. His work with Amy Winehouse earned him a Grammy Award. As evidenced by his informative blog, Noble is a passionate advocate of the tools and techniques that deliver successful recordings. Metric Halo products, including ChannelStrip 3 and the Production Bundle collection of plug-ins, SpectraFoo signal analysis software, and the eighteen-channel 2882 interface, have proven themselves worthy of Noble’s respect.
