House Research Institute Outlines Five Ways Musicians Can Protect Their Hearing in 2012

Los Angeles – January 11, 2012 — As the 2012 NAMM Winter Show approaches, musicians from all over the world are eagerly anticipating the most recent music gear developments and exciting equipment innovations. House Research Institute (HRI) [NAMM booth 1292, Hall E] will be on hand providing hearing screenings throughout the duration of the show, while offering advice on how to protect what is unequivocally musicians’ most valuable asset: their hearing.

House Research Institute – a leading non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with hearing loss and related disorders – has outlined five simple ways musicians and music fans can preserve their hearing during 2012 and beyond:

1) Know thyself: have your hearing tested

Often, hearing loss issues are initially detected by family and friends rather than the person experiencing it. “When a person frequently has trouble understanding conversations in places where there is significant background noise, such as at parties, crowded restaurants and clubs, it might be a good time for a hearing test and an ear examination,” observes John W. House, MD, president of House Research Institute and physician at the House Clinic. Find out where you stand so you can understand and address the personal risks you may face — hearing exams take just minutes. Noise induced hearing loss begins in the higher frequencies and does not affect speech frequencies until it is advanced. Therefore, a screening audiogram is advised for those who are exposed to loud noise.

2) Know thy surroundings: avoid potentially dangerous environments

By ensuring you are in a safe listening environment, you mitigate the risk of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL). “If you have to raise your voice to be heard, you are likely in an environment with sound levels exceeding 85 dBA,” says Marilee Potthoff, director of community outreach and education at House Research Institute. Musicians and engineers depend on good hearing for their careers, but also are at high risk for hearing damage from prolonged sound exposure on the job. If you’re in the sound industry, it’s important for your hearing health to carefully monitor your sound environments that reach above 85 dBA both on and off the job, and know how much to limit your exposure. When relaxing with your personal stereo or player, we recommend keeping the volume setting at no louder than 60 percent of max. potential.

3) Use it or lose it: make the right choices in hearing protection

Educate yourself on what kind of hearing protection is truly effective. “Select hearing protection devices that provide the appropriate amount of sound reduction. Hearing protection with an NRR (noise reduction rating) of around 25 to 35 dB offers better protection for loud music environments than devices with lower NRRs. Using devices with a much lower NRR may result in significant damage to the inner ear when exposed to high level [loud] sounds,” says Andrew Vermiglio, AuD, HRI research audiologist and California State University Northridge audiology professor. Some custom ear plugs — which are available through licensed audiology clinics, including the House Clinic — offer a flatter attenuation across the frequency range and may make listening to loud music more enjoyable than standard, over-the-counter earplugs, such as foam or pre-molded plugs. Standard earplugs tend to “colorize” what you hear by filtering the high frequencies more than the low frequencies.

4) Keep it clean: Ears need good hygiene, too
Earwax may not be the most popular discussion topic in the world, but it is certainly worth knowing about. Knowing how to safely remove wax and dirt build up will help you keep your hearing on the right track in 2012 and beyond. “Never insert foreign objects into your ear canal, including cotton swabs — instead, use a warm washcloth to gently clean the outer area of your ears or an over the counter ear wax removal solution,” says Dr. House. Other ear cleaning methods known as ear candling or coning are dangerous, not effective, and can easily damage your ear canal.

5) Make a date: Have your ears checked on a regular basis
Have your hearing checked annually. If you notice a change in the state of your hearing, seek immediate medical attention. “Annual hearing exams may help to identify potential hearing loss issues while there is still time to rectify them,” says Dr. Vermiglio. Also, symptoms such as hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness or loss of balance, may be related to a serious medical condition.

So whether you are a musician, or just enjoy listening to music with friends, follow these basic steps and put your hearing first in 2012 — because once you lose it, you may never be able to get it back. KLOS Radio Personality Uncle Joe Benson Helps House Research Institute Get the Word out on Healthy Hearing to NAMM Attendees

Los Angeles – January 9, 2012 — As part of its 2012 NAMM Winter Show activities, the House Research Institute (HRI) [NAMM booth 1292, Hall E] will host special guest Uncle Joe Benson of Los Angeles’ KLOS radio on Saturday, January 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center. The popular radio announcer and entertainer will be on hand to greet booth attendees while discussing the importance of maintaining healthy hearing and hearing loss protection.

Since 1980, Uncle Joe’s voice has been heard by millions of listeners across Southern California, and his “Off The Record” music/interview program is syndicated on over 90 stations nationwide. As a radio personality on KLOS, his broadcasts reach nearly three million people across southern California.

KLOS has been serving the greater Los Angeles area for over 40 years, and has also made a positive impact through its continued community outreach efforts. The station still owns the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest blood drive in the country and was presented the Crystal Award for its exemplary community service.

“Healthy hearing is a topic that deserves much broader attention — especially within the music community,” commented Uncle Joe. “This year at NAMM, we are happy to help put the spotlight on the topic of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) to educate folks not only on how fragile our hearing is, but also on the measures we can take to protect it and preserve it.”

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is usually painless, progressive, permanent, and completely preventable. It happens when a person is exposed for too long of a time to sound pressure levels of 85 decibels or more, resulting in damage to the sensorineural (“hair”) cells of the inner ear. It can be the result of exposing your ears to a sudden, intense impulse noise like an explosion or gunfire or extended or repeated exposure to loud machinery and recreational activities, such as loud music and video.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), 36 million American adults report some degree of hearing loss; an estimated 26 million of them between the ages of 20 and 69 have a high-frequency hearing loss caused by too much exposure to loud sound.

Toronto’s Prestigious National Club Modernizes Sound System with Renkus-Heinz

Toronto, CN – January 2012…   Hidden in plain view amongst the towering skyscrapers of Toronto’s downtown financial district, The National Club is one of the city’s most prestigious landmarks. The non-political members-only organization serves as private retreat for its clientele, including many of Canada’s current and future leaders.

Since its founding in 1874, The National Club has hosted a who’s who of important Canadian and foreign dignitaries. Today it serves as an esteemed venue for private meetings and dinners, weddings, presentations and club-hosted events.

The brick-and-plaster building has endured several renovations since being constructed in 1906. Most recently, the club’s Board of Directors voted to replace the Main Dining Room’s existing audio  system, with an eye toward better addressing the club’s requirements for high voice intelligibility and imrproved sound distribution.

The two-story, 1950 square foot Main Dining Room comfortably seats 200 people, with antique chandeliers hanging from its impressive 19-foot ceiling. A balcony is located to one side of the room, creating two alcoves directly underneath it.

According to Brock McGinnis of Westbury National Show Systems, Ltd., who designed and installed the new audio system, the building’s historic nature and 14″ thick brick-and-plaster walls presented some specific challenges during the installation.

“The room is a very reverberant two-story space, and the dinner guests create a great deal of noise,” McGinnis explains. “It’s very much like having dinner in the middle of a cathedral. The walls and ceiling are made of very hard surfaces, so in addition to the reverb problem we weren’t able to run any cable through the walls.”

McGinnis opted for an Iconyx digitally steerable array loudspeaker system by Renkus-Heinz. A pair of IC8-R columns are mounted on either side of the room’s motorized video screen. The high performance system provides superior sound pattern distribution technology combined with outstanding musicality and voice intelligibility.

“Renkus-Heinz was our first choice for The National Club,” says McGinnis. “We’ve used Iconyx loudspeakers on many other projects and find them to be extremely effective at steering the sound precisely where it’s needed, and away from areas where it isn’t. The quality of sound we get is excellent, even with all the hard surfaces in the room.”

Preserving the character and appearance of the club’s architecture was also paramount. The Iconyx loudspeakers fit very discreetly into the wall, rendering them barely visible.

“The National Club is so pleased with the Iconyx system’s sound quality and distribution technology that they want to install more Iconyx loudspeakers in other parts of the building,” McGinnis reports.

ATLANTA’S PERIMETER CHURCH PUTS DANLEY IN THE HANGER

ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Perimeter Church in suburban Atlanta, Georgia does a fantastic job of ministering in a way that connects emotionally and culturally with all members of the church community. Middle and high schoolers attend services in The Hanger, a 1,000-seat sanctuary devoted to the themes that resonate with the unique challenges and aesthetics of young adults. However, in the five long years since its completion, The Hanger has suffered from grossly inadequate sound reinforcement, including poor coverage and anemic bass. To remedy the situation, Perimeter technical director Steve Simmons designed and installed a Danley Sound Labs-based system that now delivers even coverage and enough clean, undistorted bass to “knock the breath out of you,” in Simmons’ words.

“The original system was terrible from day one,” Simmons said. “We had a left-center-right system, but each cluster was comprised of boxes that worked poorly together. If you were in the beam of some components, you got boomy, indistinct low-end. Other components conveyed the high-end, but not with the same coverage pattern. As a result, there were only a few select seats that got anything close to a balanced frequency response. The rest rode complex peaks and valleys of sound pressure and pass band.” In addition, the floor-mounted subs were spaced improperly and thus contributed a floppy, interference-riddled bass response to the existing full range mess.

Danley Sound Labs, headquartered in nearby Gainesville, lent Simmons a few full-range boxes so that he could prove his models. After a bit of tweaking, he settled on left-right coverage delivered by one Danley SH-96 flown wide on each side, with a paired Danley SH-95 turned on its side to provide near-wall fill. “It’s amazing that the old system required numerous units and still failed to cover the room, while Danley managed to do it with basically two boxes,” said Simmons. The center cluster, which is used primarily for spoken word, is comprised of three Danley SH-50 full-range loudspeakers in a tight pack that delivers truly seamless coverage to the entire room.

“The old system used a first-generation DSP that has a well-known problem with a high-frequency oscillation,” said Simmons. “We could hear it if we wore headphones or when the room was empty or if we were concentrating. But when the Danleys came on line, it was immediately apparent… and horrible. It just about drove us from the room. Of course, that’s a testament to the honest and extended high-frequency response of the Danley product, but it also meant we had to get a new DSP stat!” Fortunately, Perimeter’s large campus and system of satellite sites requires a certain amount of gear-on-hand. Simmons replaced the old DSP with a Biamp Audia DSP that he plans to replace when new 2012 models hit the streets. Crown Macro-Tech 5000i amplifiers provide power to the system.

Perimeter’s store of goods helped out a youth conference at The Hanger a few months in advance of the full system renovation. Simmons pulled two Danley TH-115 subwoofers from Perimeter’s standing stock and flew them over the center of the sanctuary. “It was a dramatic improvement,” he said. “We were able to drop the rest of the system by 6dB, but everyone commented that the system sounded louder… and better.” For the full renovation, Simmons added two Danley TH-118s to those boxes for a total of four coupled Danley subwoofers. “It’s very powerful and very even,” he commented. “We now have the percussive, dynamic low end that I had always hoped for.”

The new system is winning Danley adherents. “We have so many services, programs, and events, that we have a crew of technicians,” Simmons explained. “A job candidate spent a couple of weekends mixing in our main sanctuary, which does not have Danley boxes and is quite difficult to mix in. The third week, we asked him to mix in The Hanger. He had never mixed on Danley boxes before, and after the service I got a text from him that said simply, ‘I heart Danley forever.’ When I spoke with him later, he noted that he was able to clearly hear a 1dB EQ boost – the kind of thing that is lost in any other system.” In contrast to the peaks and valleys of the old system, the Danley system is tremendously even. One can walk from wall to wall, and the sound pressure and frequency response is consistent. There are other benefits, too. The Danley clusters, despite their vastly improved performance, are one third the size of the original clusters, and while the old system was constantly cranked, the Danley’s are attenuated by 20dB and still produce enough output to keep the youth jumping in their seats.

Iconyx Makes the Grade in Missouri State University’s Carrington Hall

Springfield, MO – January 2012... Carrington Hall was the first building to open its doors on the Missouri State University campus in 1908, and has lived through many incarnations since then. Today Carrington Hall serves as the university’s administration building, and its previously unused, antiquated auditorium has been renovated and modernized.

To better serve the university’s needs, the auditorium has been converted into large multi-purpose classroom, to be used primarily for lectures but also to accommodate feature concerts, films and other special events.

MSU brought in Lenexa, KS-based acoustic and audio visual consultants Coffeen Fricke and Associates to design an audio system for the new multi-purpose classroom. As CFA’s Bob Ledo explains, the building’s stone and concrete architecture created an extremely reverberant environment, albeit a visually interesting one.

“The main seating area is a futuristic looking space designed with linear, angled florescent lighting on the underside of a gigantic cube that makes the large volume space more controllable, but also cuts off the view to the top of proscenium,” says Ledo. The room also features very low under-balcony seating space completely surrounded by concrete.

It proved quite challenging for Coffeen Fricke and Associates to find loudspeakers that would provide proper coverage in the hall’s main seating area as well as to the lower under-balcony seating.

“There was nowhere to put loudspeakers in the main seating area,” says Ledo. “We couldn’t use source clusters because the cube was in the way. Using surface mounted distributed loudspeakers would have been our least costly solution but definitely the least aesthetically appealing.”

The solution was found in the low profile Iconyx system from Renkus-Heinz. “We only needed two loudspeakers, which we shelf-mounted,” Ledo says. “They blend into the environment so well, they’re not recognizable as loudspeakers.”

The new audio system utilizes two self-powered Iconyx IC16-R line arrays located on either side of the stage. The room also utilizes a simple presenter podium with a gooseneck microphone and a wireless lapel mic, all driven by Biamp Audia DSP.

CFA associate John Hodgson used Renkus-Heinz RHAON DSP software to equalize the IC16-Rs. A Biamp Audia also provided very narrow parametric filters for room equalization and narrow banding, a technique CFA has used for many years.

“We were very successful in tuning the Iconyx,” explains Hodgson. “Feedback is a non-issue. We’re able to walk right in front of the Iconyx with a lapel mic, without any feedback.”

Ledo stressed that Carrington Hall’s new audio system is a fairly simplistic one. “Iconyx gave us the pattern control and directionality we needed, as well as satisfying the aesthetic requirements of the space. Everyone is extremely pleased with the results.”
