SSL ‘Live’ Console Comes to the 2014 NAMM Show

William Kentridge’s Soundscapes Come Clean with PreSonus

tumblr_musesiMeAL1r064gzo4_1280 copyJohannesburg, South Africa – January 2014…  Acclaimed South African-born artist William Kentridge has a well-deserved reputation for the unusual. His work spans the audio and visual spectrum, from drawings and prints to operas and charcoal drawn animations. In his latest installation, “The Refusal of Time,” Kentridge fuses sculpture with digital video and complex, multi-layered soundscapes to create a multimedia work that is both powerful and compelling.

The viewer is immersed with five video screens covering three walls, running separate but interwoven program material accompanied by a multi-channel music and sound sculpture. There is a sculpture of a man holding a big megaphone, as well as a giant wooden, breathing elephant in the middle of the room, making reference to Charles Dickens’ Industrial Revolution. The soundtrack includes music composed by Philip Miller, as well as spoken word, including Kentridge’s own voice from the megaphone, and of course, the elephant’s breathing. The end result is a clearly unique and intricate audio/visual installation.

2-2013-06-10 309 copyThe man charged with the logistics of running this complex and unusual setup is engineer/sound designer Gavan Eckhart. With an installation requiring sophisticated mixing and matrixing and powerful signal processing, Eckhart chose the PreSonus AudioBox 1818VSL as the central audio hub.

A four-channel bed of music forms the sonic foundation, blending samples of African languages and chants atop Miller’s orchestral array of trumpet, trombone, tuba, grand piano, and various percussion. The quadraphonic surround mix is sent, via four of the AudioBox 1818VSL’s outputs, to four JBL Eon powered monitors.

On top of this mix is Kentridge’s spoken-word soundscape: the man with the megaphone. Here, Eckhart had to think of a creative way to achieve just the right metallic, low-fi sound. “The megaphones are a big component of the whole piece,” he says. “I came up with the idea to just grab some car speakers and mount them in tin cones on tripods and see if it worked. Fortunately, it did. That low-quality rattle and hum those cones produce is actually part of the beauty of the piece.” Four more outputs from the AudioBox 1818VSL feed the car speakers via a four-channel amplifier.

1-2013-06-10 325 copyThe installation includes a total of seven Mac minis: five running video playout, a sixth running the audio, and one more as master controller. With most of the installations residing in large warehouse spaces, it’s easy to imagine the potential for things to degenerate into a muddy-sounding cacophony. But Eckhart says the AudioBox 1818VSL is more than up to the task.

“The AudioBox 1818VSL gives me enough matrixing and discrete outputs to route all the individual signals,” he says. “But more than that, it has a nice, well-defined sound that really allows me to get a good separation between the beautiful musical backdrop and the spoken word with these distorted car speakers.”

The AudioBox 1818VSL’s onboard signal processing helps to further define and refine the mix, says Eckhart. “I find that the EQs are very useful for shaping the sound and achieving separation. If it’s a very bass-heavy room, I can just roll off a bit of lows or bring a bit of sparkle to the speakers instead of having to remix and re-export it. It lessens the processing demands on the computer and gives me a tremendous amount of control to create a clear and well-defined soundscape.”

Since its debut at the Dokumenta 13 festival in Kassel, Kentridge’s “The Refusal of Time” has been installed at numerous museums worldwide, including Rome, Paris, and Eindhoven, with new installations scheduled in Germany, Japan, Australia, and the United States.

Iconyx Brings a New Chapter to Historic Manhattan Church

New York, NY – January, 2014… The brick and brownstone building that is home to New York’s Seventh Day Adventist Church has stood on this tree-lined street in Greenwich Village since 1882. Today, this 1,000-seat historic landmark retains much of its original architecture and interior design, including grand Tiffany style stained-glass windows, smoothly aged, dark wooden pews, and high, vaulted ceilings. A magnificent organ rises high above the stage, and a balcony partially extends over the large, open auditorium.

Like many of the era’s grand old churches, the acoustics can be magnificent for organ and choir, but the sermons were battling the architecture’s myriad reflective surfaces. Areas under and in the balcony suffered from particularly poor intelligibility, and coverage was inconsistent throughout the room. The

steep rake of the pew seating, covering almost one vertical story from the entry doors to the stage, only exacerbated the problem. The Church’s previous portable system did little to improve intelligibility, and even less for aesthetics.

“The Renkus-Heinz Iconyx was really the best choice for this room,” explains Geraldo Watson, President and CEO of BUSA AV Technology & Construction in Brooklyn, NY, the system contractor. A pair of Renkus-Heinz IC24-R-II digitally steerable column arrays are mounted left and right of the stage. “It’s a bit of a challenging room because of the shape, and all the reflective surfaces.”

“Two IC-24 columns cover the whole room. We didn’t need any fills or additional speakers,” says Richard Trombitas of Northport, NY-based Cardone, Solomon & Associates. “In addition to providing consistent coverage in the primary seating areas, Iconyx enabled us to selectively steer the sound into the areas where it was needed, while minimizing reflections from the walls and windows. With the IC-24s we were able to create a nice, narrow beam to cover the balcony and another to cover the area below it. This approach provided a comprehensive solution for this customer, utilizing only two boxes.”

Not surprisingly, aesthetics were an important consideration in this landmark building. The low profile design of the Iconyx meant they could be mounted flat against two large wooden columns, painted to match the décor, and blend almost invisibly with the architecture.

The stage area is equipped with four Renkus-Heinz TRX82/12  dual eight inch 120 X 60 degree loudspeakers for monitoring,  powered by a single Powersoft M50 amplifier. “The TRX82 is a great option for stage monitors,” says Trombitas. “Its low profile, controlled mid-bass directivity and 120 X 60 degree pattern are optimal for this, as well as many other HOW and performing arts applications”

Watson reports the Church staff and congregation have been exceptionally pleased. “When they heard the sound coming from the new system, they were amazed at the clarity. They just love it.”

Funky Junk Takes On UK Distribution For Sandhill Audio

Funky Junk, Europe’s leading supplier of new and refurbished professional recording equipment and services, has been appointed exclusive UK distributor by Finnish microphone manufacturer Sandhill Audio.

Established in 2008 by sound engineers Riku Pasanen, Petteri Taponen and Sammy Roiha, Sandhill Audio launched its first product in 2011 – the 6011A ribbon microphone.

PRODUCER/ENGINEER NOAH SHAIN RECORDS BREAKOUT ARTIST DEAD SARA ON AN API 1608

MALIBU, CALIFORNIA: Producer Noah Shain recently purchased an analog API 1608 small-format console to record breakout artist Dead Sara in a Malibu mansion for a forthcoming release on Epic Records. The tracks will form the follow-up to the band’s 2012 eponymous self-release. Shain, who is best known for his work with Sonny Moore (Skrillex) and Atreyu, purchased the API 1608 because it was, in his words, “the only console available with a small enough footprint and a big enough sound.”

After recording their previous album with Shain at Sonic Ranch in Texas, the band members had their heart set on taking the laid back experience they had there to the next level. “They didn’t want to work in a studio at all,” Shain said. “They just wanted to work in a house. I said, ‘OK, but if we’re going to work in a house, we’re going to do it right. I’m not bringing my laptop over to your buddy’s apartment.’ In the end, we rented an 8,000 square-foot Malibu mansion for two months. All told, we paid about as much going that route as we would have paid going to any of the world-class L.A. studios that I tried to talk them into originally.”

As a self-described API-fan who had been considering a 1608 to complement his hybrid, bus-intensive mix style, Shain recognized the sonic and logistic advantages of having a 1608 for the two-month remote date with Dead Sara. “I like discrete transistor electronics,” he said. “That’s saying something, because Shain’s workflow is unique. Like Michael Brauer, Shain separately processes stems according to their role in the music. He uses eight passive busses and saturates signal on the other end with boutique gain make-up amps. “The 1608 is the perfect heart for that kind of system,” he said. “It’s small enough to make it easy, and I can still focus a lot on the computer for a truly hybrid workflow.”

With the remote recording date with Dead Sara finished, Shain has moved the new 1608 into his three-room studio located inside Bedrock, a 120-room rehearsal space in the hip Echo Park neighborhood of L.A. “Bedrock is a great place with a great community of musicians,” he said. “A lot of notable bands rehearse there. My door is open and a lot of people are going to see the new API 1608.”

SEVEN-TIME GRAMMY-NOMINATED MACKLEMORE AND RYAN LEWIS TAKE METRIC HALO GEAR ON THE ROAD

SAFETY HARBOR, FLORIDA – DECEMBER 2013: Rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis’ most recent release, The Heist, grabbed the number one spots on the Billboard U.S. R&B/Hip-Hop and Rap charts and quickly sold its way to Platinum status. It was a fast start that shows no sign of letting up, as the duo recently garnered seven Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, Song of the Year (for “Same Love”), Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album. That’s an incredibly rare feat for any artist, let alone a duo whose inspired musicianship and honest lyrics leave their street credibility untouched by such towering industry benchmarks. Perhaps just as telling, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were “the most streamed” artists on Spotify in 2013. Although they spent the fall of 2013 packing arenas all over the U.S. in support of The Heist, in the downtime between gigs they turned their attention to the music that will form its follow-up, and Metric Halo is with them along the way.

Capturing and working out ideas on the road is often seen as a balancing act between quick-and-dirty methods that are fast, on the one hand, and higher-quality techniques that take more time and thought to set up, on the other. Lewis largely avoids that compromise with a Metric Halo ULN-2 interface. “The ULN-2 is a pretty unique interface,” he said. “It has two good-quality pre-amps and yet it’s small enough to fit into a carry-on. It also acts as a great interface for Pro Tools, or any other audio program that I use. Macklemore and I have used it countless times on the road.”

After using the Metric Halo ULN-2 for a short while, Lewis was alerted to Metric Halo’s collection of seven plug-ins, sold together as the Metric Halo Production Bundle. He has already used a number of the plug-ins to mix new music in the studio and on the road. Among them are Character – a plug-in that models the sonic signature of a wide range of classic and contemporary audio gear; HaloVerb – an authentic-sounding reverb, Precision DeEsser; and TransientControl – a unique dynamics processor.

“Character is great when I’m not exactly sure what I want to do with something that doesn’t have the right texture,” Lewis said. “It can pull out different pieces that weren’t there before. I love HaloVerb and use it all the time. It has a good variety of feelings and a full range of spring and hall sounds that work well on vocals and instruments.” Some of Lewis’ uses are particular to rap and hip-hop: “Rap vocals have a lot of punch and can get very sibilant. The Precision DeEsser does a great job of cleaning that up. Finally, I didn’t expect the fairly simple TransientControl plug-in to be as useful as it turned out to be. Now it’s one of my favorite plug-ins because it can capture the accents in a recording. For instance, when I have a break beat and I really want the snare and kick to pop, but I’d like to lose everything else in the recording, I use TransientControl.”
