McCLELLAND SOUND GOES FOR ASHLY AMPLIFICATION AND SIGNAL PROCESSING AT AUGUSTA HIGH SCHOOL

ne2424m.JPG

AUGUSTA, KANSAS – APRIL 2010: Like many schools built in the 1970s, Augusta High School in Augusta, Kansas had outlived the usefulness of its sound reinforcement systems and, given the new and relatively inexpensive technologies available today, was ready to shed the clunky interfaces and fuzzy fidelity to which everyone had become inured. The school hired Wichita-based McClelland Sound, among the largest and most experienced sound engineering and contracting firms in Kansas. Founded at the dawn of sound reinforcement in 1928, McClelland is responsible for literally thousands of installations in all manner of buildings throughout the region. Vice president Scott Martin, who began his career with McClelland in 1974, took Augusta High School’s case and, in place of a market leader, used Ashly network-ready amplification and signal processing to give the school worry-free, easy-to-use, and utterly transparent reinforcement. more

SYMNET DSP COMBINES ANALOG SOUND WITH TINKER-PROOF OPERATION FOR VETERAN SOUNDMAN TERRY FRIEDMAN

terry_friedman.JPG

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – APRIL 2010: Longtime FOH engineer and production manager Terry Friedman (Village People, Grace Jones) has, in recent years, stepped off the tour bus to offer schools, houses of worship, and other establishments in New York City his no-nonsense approach to audio under the ironic name Noise and Distortion. Reacting against industry dogma that sets digital equipment apart from its analog forbears, Friedman rightly points out that we only hear in analog and so a unit’s analog representation is ultimately all that matters. But Friedman is no Luddite and frequently relies on SymNet open-architecture digital signal processing equipment to convey analog warmth with digital logic, flexibility, and power, safe from tinkering fingers. more

CHESTNUT MOUNTAIN, GEORGIA – APRIL 2010: For 25 years, Eagle Ranch in northeast Georgia has provided a home and Christ-centered inspiration to over 600 children in crisis. Set in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, the 270-acre facility is comprised of six boys’ homes, four girls’ homes, an administration & counseling center, school for grades six through nine, a chapel, a gym, and a brand new lodge. Until the rustic Wink Wynne Lodge was completed, Eagle Ranch’s 60-some children gathered in the gym for movies and presentations, but with lighting and acoustics befitting basketball, the situation was far from ideal. The new lodge features a state-of-the-art 5.1 home theater system with an eight by fifteen-foot screen and peerless loudspeakers donated by Danley Sound Labs. more

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS’ THE LIVE ANTHOLOGY MIXED ON ATC LOUDSPEAKERS

ryan_ulyate.JPG

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – APRIL 2010: To say it was an ambitious project is an understatement. Veteran recording engineer/producer Ryan Ulyate, who has worked closely with legendary rocker Tom Petty and guitarist Mike Campbell since 2005, was charged with the task of compiling and organizing the individual songs from over 250 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers concerts from their over thirty years together. After selecting only the “A+” material with Petty and Campbell, he then mixed five CDs-worth of material sequenced without regard to chronology. The challenge, apart from the sheer volume of the task, was to obtain a consistent sound from recordings spread across three decades made by different engineers using vastly different technologies. Ulyate relied on his ATC SCM 50 ASL three-way active monitors to reveal the truth in every mix, and the consistency he was able to achieve effectively makes The Live Anthology a time machine that more
