ASHLY PEMA 8250 PROCESSOR/AMPLIFIERS GET SAUCY AT 4 RIVERS SMOKEHOUSE

Mr. Rivers wanted something that would give full-fidelity, full-impact music the role he felt it deserved at 4 Rivers Smokehouse. We knew we could help.” Sound Stage designed and installed the music playback system at the next 4 Rivers Smokehouse location using the Ashly Pema 8250 together with JBL Control Contractor-Series loudspeakers, and its success earned Sound Stage the same role at every subsequent new location.

Each system begins with a simple music source that feeds an Ashly Pema 8250. An ambient noise-sensing microphone on an input to the Pema 8250 engages Ashly’s Ambient Noise Compensation feature, which automatically adjusts the overall volume level based on how busy the restaurant gets. That feature is important because 4 Rivers Smokehouse can go from empty at opening to packed so quickly that managers and staff are justifiably focused on matters other than the music volume. Depending on the situation at a particular location, the eight 250-watt amp channels of the Ashly Pema 8250 feed some composition of JBL Control 25AV, Control 19, or Control 24 loudspeakers and some number of JBL Control SB210 subwoofers. “These systems are full-range and have plenty of power… they rock!” said Forbes.

He continued, “Our experience with Ashly began with its NE-Series amplifiers, which are great. But in a situation like this, the Pema range carries that same great sound and power, and a small footprint, but adds all of the front-end processing that we need. DANLEY HORNS ELEVATE THE SOUND QUALITY AT RALPH WILSON STADIUM HOME OF THE BUFFALO BILLS

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – DECEMBER 2013: Fervent football fans know that the Buffalo Bill’s Ralph Wilson Stadium is one of the most difficult places for kickers, owning to its exposure to Lake Erie’s gusty winds, but few footballs recognize the tremendous challenge those winds create for the stadium’s sound reinforcement system. Moreover, Buffalo’s notoriously snowy winters regularly incapacitated the loudspeakers and subwoofers that were exposed to it, and unintelligible announcements and underpowered music were a constant frustration. However, with a new Danley Sound Labs distributed loudspeaker and subwoofer system in place, that lackluster performance is history, and Ralph Wilson Stadium now stands as one of the league’s best venues for a soul-shaking game-day experience that few living room hi-fi system can rival.

“The NFL is striving to improve the game-day experience,” explained Steve Asposto, senior director of broadcast operations with the Buffalo Bills. “We want to keep people coming to the stadium, but with so much HD technology available in fans’ living rooms, there is a huge temptation for them to stay home. Our goal is to give them an experience at the stadium that cannot be replicated on the couch, and music is a huge part of that. The league has softened many of the rules that used to restrict music playback, and so now we’re able to build music into a greater part of the experience.”

The trouble was that Ralph Wilson Stadium wasn’t ready to make effective use of those new rules. Even when it was brand new, the old sound system fired from only one side, which generated an intelligibility-killing clot of late arrivals. Worse, over a decade of Buffalo’s ceaseless wind and superabundant snowfall had destroyed approximately half of the stadium’s loudspeakers and subwoofers. “We used to get regular complaints that the announcements and referee calls were completely muddled,” said Asposto. “The clarity simply wasn’t there.” The Bills called on Anthony James Partners (Richmond, Virginia) to design a new system that would stand up to Buffalo’s inclement weather and that would deliver clear, high-fidelity audio even on the windiest days. Ronco Specialized (Tonawanda, New York) installed the new system.

“The idea was to place a loudspeaker and subwoofer cluster on each of four towers that encircle the stadium,” said Larry Lucas, director of audio engineering for Anthony James Partners. “As always, price was a big consideration, but we also needed exceptional pattern control to avoid the late arrivals that had plagued the old system. Danley Sound Labs delivered on both counts, and Danley’s Shaded Amplitude technology in its GH-60 Genesis Horns would provide even coverage across the seats.” Each of the four clusters consists of three Danley GH-60 Genesis Horns, a Danley SH-95 for center fill, four Danley SH-MINIs for fill right below the cluster, and two Danley TH-118 subwoofers. In addition, four Danley SH-64s (two at each end zone) provide additional coverage, and 35 Danley SH-Micros provide under-balcony coverage. An existing Yamaha LS-7 digital console and four Peavey Neon processors (two of which are new) form the front end, and sixteen Lab.gruppen PLM-20000 amplifiers power the Danley boxes. A new computer system operates the system with multiple screens (including one dedicated to the NIO software and a touchscreen dedicated to the Lake software). The amplifiers receive signal via CobraNet or Dante and contain DSP resources to handle all of the loudspeaker conditioning.

Unfortunately, some of the electrical requirements necessitated a shift in the original design that then compromised the coverage of the Danley GH-60 Genesis Horns. “It turned out that even with the Shaded Amplitude design, the SPL was too hot on the top,” said Dean Churpita, who led the installation for Ronco Specialized. “Danley worked with us and twice sent technicians to physically modify the boxes to give us the coverage we needed. The sound quality itself is exceptional. I barely had to equalize the Danley boxes at all!” Al Colucci, account manager at Ronco Specialized, added, “Danley really came through for us. They’ve been tremendously responsive and are obviously invested in making this installation right for us and for the client.”

With the Danley-led modifications now in effect, the coverage is smooth, and the sound quality at Ralph Wilson Stadium has leapfrogged its NFL peers to become one of the best. “We’re very happy with the new system and with Danley’s commitment to making it perfect,” said Asposto. “It’s not an easy trick to deliver consistent audio to all 75,000 seats in an open stadium in Buffalo’s climate. We’re similar to Lambeau Field, except that Lambeau has the benefit of an uninterrupted ring of stands. In contrast, we have a lot of ‘holes’ for the wind to play with. Despite that, Danley’s coverage is keeping direct sound on the seats and minimizing the sort of extraneous echoes that we used to contend with.”

WEATHERPROOF DANLEY OS-80 LOUDSPEAKERS COVER ONTARIO HOCKEY ARENA

ONTARIO, CANADA – DECEMBER 2013: The J.D. McArthur Arena seats 3,500 for ice hockey games and 3,000 for lacrosse games and resides within the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. The Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League and the Owen Sound Woodsmen of the Ontario Lacrosse Association both call it home. Although thoroughly modern in most respects (including private boxes and a restaurant), the arena suffered from a sound reinforcement system with poor intelligibility and impact. A recent renovation, led by Straight Street Event Services of Cambridge, Ontario, took the sound system from terrible to fantastic with the replacement of the existing loudspeakers to the fully-weatherized Danley Sound Labs OS80s.

“The owners of the hockey team wanted a better experience for their ticket holders,” explained Keith Broughton, an independent contractor who led the design and installation on behalf of Straight Street. “The existing system did not provide clear announcements, and the quality and SPL of music playback did not cover all seating areas sufficiently. Many people complained that they couldn’t understand the announcer, and, this being a fairly small town, those complaints reached the right ears… many times!” Keith Kissner, the owner of Straight Street Event Services, who has a trusted relationship with the owners, hired Broughton to help evaluate the owners’ requirements, evaluate the existing system, recommend a solution, oversee its implementation, and test and tune the system after installation. In addition, he added, “and I would take the heat if the new system didn’t live up to expectations!”

Kissner and Broughton have been using a Danley TH-115 subwoofer in a rental application and were impressed by its performance. Based on that experience, together with the realization that it was precisely the “conventional” aspects of conventional loudspeakers that had so failed the McArthur Arena, Broughton scheduled a two-day trip to visit Danley headquarters in Georgia. “The folks at the ‘lab’ treated me very well,” he said. “They made me feel welcomed and answered all of my questions. They’re clearly interested in building relationships with the people who use their products. Southern hospitality is alive and well!”

Broughton’s requirements for the new loudspeakers were exceptional vocal clarity, high directivity, good visual appeal, and even coverage across the spectrum. A lightweight, easy-to-rig design was also important, as was a weather-resistant enclosure since the arena becomes very humid during the transition from lacrosse to hockey. “I originally spoke with Ivan Beaver, Danley’s chief engineer, about the Danley SM-80, which met my requirements,” said Broughton. “He turned me on to the new Danley OS-80, which has the SM-80’s characteristics plus a truly weatherproof enclosure and less overall weight. My visit to Danley headquarters gave me a chance to listen to the product and to talk with Ivan about its technical points. I left confident that the OS-80 was the right product.”

The new system covers the seating area only and was “piggy-backed” onto the existing control system. The Straight Street installation team removed the old loudspeakers and amplifiers and left the rest of the house system as it was. Broughton added a new Xilica processor, which conditions the system and feeds three Crest Pro9200 amplifiers. The amplifiers power five sets of four Danley OS-80s each (twenty OS-80s total), and the remaining channel powers a new Danley TH-118 subwoofer mounted over center-ice. Broughton and the Straight Street crew mounted the OS-80s directly on the roof trussing with the included yokes using beam clamps. “Director of Danley University, Doug Jones was also very generous with his time, and walked me through the use of the speaker prediction software,” he said. “That further convinced me that the OS-80 was the right tool for the job. Its 80-degree pattern is perfect for covering the front to rear seats and proved to be just as the Danley speaker prediction software had indicated.”

He continued, “The J.D. McArthur Arena may not be a big ticket install compared to what Danley usually does, but to this client, this is THE big ticket item. As you can imagine, my reputation, the reputation of this sound company, and the satisfaction of the client were riding on this products ability to deliver. The OS-80 and the support from Danley both exceeded my expectations. Danley included high-grade wire with the weather resistant coupler, they pre-lubricated the hardware, and they coated the grill with weather resistant film. Those details were not lost on me or the installation team! Both the arena technical staff and the hockey team’s director of marketing met the initial audio demonstration with a big ‘WOW, we have never heard sound like that in here!’ In fact, the members of the arena tech crew were so impressed that they want to add more Danley OS-80s to cover the ice area.” We are very happy with the OS80 and hope to use more Danley Sound Lab products in the future.

PreSonus Ships Innovative StudioLive AI-series Active Integration PA Loudspeakers

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – January 2014…  PreSonus is shipping its new StudioLive™ AI-series Active Integration Loudspeakers, the first active loudspeakers that deliver studio-monitor accuracy onstage. A key component of the StudioLive AI’s design is its use of Active Integration technology. Active Integration combines wireless and wired networking and communications with powerful DSP to create a unified working environment.

StudioLive AI-series speakers incorporate Fulcrum Acoustics’ TQ™ Temporal Equalization algorithms. Taking advantage of Active Integration’s ample DSP, TQ employs multiple, fully addressable Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters to eliminate horn reflections and to correct linear time and amplitude anomalies in coaxial systems. Each full-range, powered, 3-way loudspeaker relies on a custom-designed, CoActual™ 8-inch coaxial speaker with a 1.75-inch titanium compression driver to reproduce the mid and high frequencies. Triamplified, Class D power amplifiers in each model deliver a combined 2,000 watts of power.

The StudioLive 312AI comes equipped with a 12-inch ferrite speaker to handle low-frequency reproduction, while the 315AI employs a 15-inch woofer, and the StudioLive 328AI features dual 8-inch ferrite speakers, enabling it to deliver high-powered performance in a noticeably streamlined and compact enclosure.

A 1,000W amplifier powers the subwoofer. The StudioLive 18sAI offers stereo line inputs (XLR/¼-inch combo) and full-range stereo line outputs (XLR) with a switchable, low-cut crossover.

All StudioLive AI-series loudspeakers include an Ethernet port and a USB port with a Wi-Fi module to connect to SL Room Control software over a wireless network. Expected to be available in Spring 2014, SL Room Control is a speaker-management application for Mac OS X®, Windows®, and iPad that provides both individual and grouped speaker control and includes a 31-band graphic EQ and an 8-band parametric EQ, muting, soloing, and level control, in addition to performance monitoring (over temperature, click detection, and excursions). A network-setup wizard will be included.

Custom accessories for the AI-series speakers include a mountable Sub Dolly to make hauling the 18sAI subwoofer easy and a pull-tested Sub Pole to mount a full-range system atop the 18sAI. An M10 Kit, which contains four M10 eyebolts, lets you fly any full-range model in a permanent installation. Protective covers for the 312AI, 328AI, 315AI, and 18sAI are also available.

Casino Lounge Upgrades with New Yamaha CIS Series

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Already outfitted with Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems equipment, Tulalip Casino Resort in Tulalip, Washington recently upgraded its Destinations Lounge audio system with the new Yamaha Commercial Installation Solutions (CIS) product line. The system includes one MTX3 processor, two XMV4280 amplifiers, six VXS8 speakers, 16 VSC8W speakers, and two VXS10SW subs, all purchased on the recommendation of Clarity Media Group (CMG), Lake Oswego, Oregon.

“We decided to use the Yamaha CIS products primarily based on the sound quality of the demo units we listened to, states Travis Cibolski, co-owner and system designer, CMG. We also appreciated the system’s ability to integrate with the existing infrastructure to offer simple operation for our customer.”

Cibolski said CMG wanted to create a relaxing and high-end environment in the Destination Lounge. The audio is accompanied by a 4K Atmosphere video system displaying music being played by the artists, a mix of music videos, “mood” music which contains pictures of nature, cityscapes, etc. with music, and “digital karaoke” style scene with a live band covering songs. Each band member is played on a different TV appearing on four HD screens. For this reason, stereo in every seat was a must. The wide dispersion of the Yamaha CIS speakers allowed us to do this without cluttering the ceiling with lots of speakers. Surface mounted speakers are used for the entry and placed between suspended ceiling panels. The Yamaha speakers are compact enough to be completely hidden, offering pleasing sound with a low visual impact.”

Amos Lee Tour Takes Two Yamaha CLs on The Road in Support of Latest CD

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Amos Lee is an American singer-songwriter whose musical style encompasses folk, rock and soul. Born in Philadelphia, the 36-year old is embarking on a new tour in support of his sixth CD, “Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song.” This CD follows the release of his album ‘Mission Bell’ that debuted at #1 on the Billboard top 200 chart. Currently finishing the fall leg of the tour, Lee and the crew will be hitting the road again in February for the winter leg.

The 5D and I became good friends at the Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville, VA where I was the house engineer.” Pendleton said while he’s a big fan of pre-training on new gear, he’s a firm believer that one learns by doing, and so he dove right into the CL5.

“In general, I really like the Yamaha CL platform and the ease of function, says Pendleton. The approach can’t be beat, and the progression from the M7CL to the CL Series is why I ultimately went with CL consoles for our tour. Taking a highly functional platform and combining it with top-notch pre-amps in expandable stage racks made the decision a no brainer for me.”

Pendleton added that both he and monitor engineer Reuben Cantu, are using Dante networking to communicate between the CL5 at FOH, CL1 in monitor world, and the two RIO racks tied together on the stage. “It took me a second to wrap my head around it, but the Dante network has been rock solid for us.” He noted that the console’s Premium Rack is also an excellent addition to Yamaha consoles. “The pre-amps sound great on their own, but to add premium EQs and compressors really pushes the sound quality over the top. Really great stuff… I hate to sound silly, but most things about the CL make my life easier at FOH.”

A mixing engineer for some 22 years beginning in high school, Pendleton graduated from the College of William & Mary in 2000 where he really started to dig into to his professional sound career. Since then, he’s been running clubs and music venues as well as touring with various artists, most recently GRAMMY™ award winners The Robert Glasper Experiment, Yassin Bey (a.k.a. Mos Def), and Erykah Badu.


Cantu, who has been mixing since 1997, said he has also used most digital consoles in the Yamaha family. “Like a lot of live sound engineers out there, I had my training on the job with the CL and figuring things out in the old “trial by fire” way of learning on the fly. And, one great part about the Yamaha website is the video tutorials. I watched all of the videos on the CL Series Consoles once I knew I was going out on tour with one.”

“For my life in monitor world, Cantu said, there are many features that make my life easier. From the time I save with the ease of setup of the console, to having the processing power to run the 46 channels we were using, six stereo in-ear mixes and four powered mixes. I tend to use a lot of dynamics to keep things consistent, but still keeping the live feel of each instrument without compromising the dynamics of the sound. I was also using five stereo effects to round it all out.”
Cantu happily notes how great it is to have classic Comp’s and EQ’s that ‘engineers have been drooling over’ at the touch of the screen. “How often have we had access to any two of these at one time let alone having arguably some of the best sounding dynamic devices sought after waiting to be used right in the rack?”

ASHLY EXPANDS nX AMPLIFIER LINE

WEBSTER, NEW YORK – DECEMBER 2013: Ashly’s nX family of two- and four-channel power amplifiers has been expanded with the addition of twelve new 800 Watt and 400 Watt models. These medium output amplifiers are the perfect complement to the high-output 3,000W and 1,500W nX models.

All nX Series amplifiers feature Ashly’s programmable outputs on each individual channel using rear panel DIP switches to select Low-Z (down to 2 Ohms), or High-Z, (70V or 100V) constant-voltage outputs.

The nX8004 has four channels rated at 800 watts per channel across all programmable outputs. The nX8002 is the two-channel version. The nX4004 offers four channels at 400 watts per channel, while the nX4002 is the two-channel model.

Ashly offers three nX amplifier feature sets. The nX Series is the base level amplifier with Ashly’s Energy Management System (Ashly EMS™), a defeatable sleep mode that draws <1 Watt of current when engaged. The nX Series also has an optional security lockout feature for the front panel controls. BLACKBIRD STUDIO CHOOSES API 1608 FOR ITS NEWLY CREATED BLACKBIRD ACADEMY

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – DECEMBER 2013: An API 1608 analog console will serve aspiring sound engineers at the newly created Blackbird Academy recording school in Nashville, Tennessee. The school is based at the prestigious Blackbird Studio and will draw on their history, expertise, and industry connections to offer three educational curricula, totaling over 720 hours of horizon-expanding coursework. Class sizes will be small and will feature extensive hands-on lab time, including time in two of Blackbird’s eight recording studios, now reserved exclusively for educational use. The classroom space was created by interior designers Robert and Cortney Novogratz of the HGTV television show, Home by Novogratz.

“We chose the API 1608 for a number of reasons,” said John McBride, who is co-owner and co-operator of Blackbird Studio with his wife, country superstar Martina McBride. “The 1608 is easy to use, it has a great sound, and it’s an excellent tool to teach students signal flow. We already have a couple of 1608s at Blackbird, and we’re very happy with them. Moving forward with the Academy, we wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Mark Rubel and Kevin Becka are co-directing Blackbird Academy, which began with a three-day summer camp designed for high school students. The Academy’s debut Studio Engineering Program kicked off on September 30, 2013 and will run for about 24 weeks.

Premiere Southern California Live Music Venue Steps it Up with VARIA

Long Beach, CA – December 2013…The Gaslamp is one of Southern California’s best-known night spots, with a rich history of great entertainment and an impressively eclectic roster. On any given night, the club’s stage plays host to artists ranging from hard rock and metal to punk, acoustic, and even contemporary classical performances, as well as comedy, DJs, tribute acts, karaoke, and even televised sporting events.

The Gaslamp offers up a full kitchen, with private booths and tables as well as a bar and dance floor, making it a great place for dinner, drinks, and a night out. But as owner Mike Newfeld explains, the club’s acoustics have long been a struggle.

“It’s a very boomy room,” says Newfeld. “It’s got high ceilings, concrete floors, and just not very good sound dispersion — a lot of pockets that are dead space or too loud. The challenge has been to find a system that would deliver consistent coverage and sound good, no matter where you are in the room.”

Engineer Tony Purvis agrees. “It was really, really hard to get a good mix throughout the whole club — to achieve that ‘comfortable loud,’ where everyone can enjoy themselves, enjoy the music and the performance but still be able to hold a conversation.”

The Gaslamp recently upgraded their sound system, installing the new VARIA modular point source line array system from Renkus-Heinz. As Purvis observes, the VARIA system has completely changed the equation for the club.

“The experience that I’ve had with the new VARIA system has been just amazing,” Purvis remarks. “The design of the system has enabled complete coverage. This system makes my life easier.”

“We couldn’t be happier with the new VARIA system,” adds Newfeld. “Our customer base noticed immediately. It’s loud, clear, and clean, without blowing people away. Thanks to the new VARIA system, we are now known as the premiere live music venue in Southern California.”
