DANLEY’S PRECISE AUDIO FIDELITY ANCHORS THE NEW PERFORMING ARTS CENTER AT FINGER LAKES COMMUNITY COLLEGE

CANANDAIGUA, NEW YORK – APRIL 2013: Given its exceptional faculty and its extensive facilities for Music and Music Recording Technology, the Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, New York is rare among community colleges. The résumés of its faculty include some of the best-known commercial recording studios in the world, and the campus is home to the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC), a popular outdoor venue that seats 5,000, and a John Storyk-designed recording studio. Recently, the school committed to building a new Student Life Center building, which, among many other amenities, includes a 410-seat Performing Arts Center and a smaller multipurpose room with flexible seating. The performing arts center is acoustically- and technologically-flexible and capable of effectively delivering acoustic music, high-SPL rock, and everything in-between. Both rooms rely on Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers and subwoofers to convey high-fidelity sound reinforcement with precise pattern control.

“It was only after we had designed the room for acoustic music that the school added high SPL amplified music to the list of requirements,” explained Seth Waltz, principal of AVL Designs (Penfield, New York). “It was originally designed as a classic recital hall, and we did all of the acoustic work with that in mind. Our initial plan called for a small central cluster of loudspeakers that would be used strictly for voice reinforcement. But then they changed things and wanted to be able to accommodate rock bands and dramatic theater. So we had to move backwards, working around the acoustics and the lighting positions that were already in place.” JMZ Architects (Glens Falls, New York) led the project, and AVL Designs designed the acoustics, rigging, lighting, video, and sound reinforcement for both rooms. Platinum Sound (Victor, New York) installed the audio and video systems, and BMI Supply installed the rigging and lighting.

“Given the new requirements, we had to find a very well-controlled loudspeaker that would keep energy off the walls and ceiling, yet deliver tremendous SPL with audiophile fidelity,” said Waltz. “Because of sight lines, lighting positions, and the geometry of the room, a line array was out of the question. Danley Sound Labs’ Synergy Horn technology was the obvious, and perhaps only choice.” AVL designed stereo clusters mounted at either edge of the proscenium, each composed of a Danley SH-64 with a Danley SH-95 for downfill. Four Danley TH-112 subwoofers support the low end from below the stage.

A Digidesign Venue SC48 sits at FOH and feeds an Ashly ne24.24M modular I/O processor configured four eight inputs and sixteen outputs. “In terms of sound quality for the dollar, I love the Ashly processors,” said Waltz. “The Ashly ne24.24M is the perfect FOH processor.” A pair of four-channel Lab.gruppen c48:4s power the Danley TH-112 subwoofers and the Danley SH-64 loudspeakers, and a c28:4 powers the SH-95s. Crestron control integrates all of the A/V system functionality and lights. A high-definition Christie Digital LX1500 projector illuminates a Da-Lite 270-inch screen for cinema-quality video, and ETC lighting with 192 channels of dimming allow for flexible and dramatic staging.

The design goal was not merely to make the Performing Arts Center acceptable for a wide range of music and performances, but to make it excellent across that range. Because they have such low distortion and because it is largely independent of the output volume, the Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers contribute significantly toward that goal. Going further, AVL Designs incorporated a Yamaha AFC electronic reverberation system for the room. A series of sixteen hidden microphones feed a processing engine that outputs to approximately forty hidden loudspeakers with small subwoofers built in. Using the Yamaha system, the room’s reverb can be adjusted between 1 and 2.5 seconds.

Although much smaller in scope, the multipurpose room was the first space in which the college’s discriminating faculty had an opportunity to hear Danley loudspeakers installed. A pair of Danley SH-100Bs provide stereo output with integrated subwoofer support. “The faculty – and these are all veteran recording engineers – were blown away by the Danley SH-100Bs,” said Waltz. “And when these people say that they like the way a loudspeaker sounds, it really means something!” A Yamaha 24-channel digital console feeds another Ashly ne24.24M, this time configured as 8×12. A QSC PLX 3102 amplifier powers the system.

SYMETRIX INTRODUCES EXTERNAL CONTROL EXPANDER FOR SYMNET

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – APRIL 2013: Symetrix announces release of the SymNet xControl, an external control expander for use with the SymNet Edge and Radius family of DSP products useful in conferencing and paging applications. For those installations where Edge and Radius’s eight onboard control inputs and eight logic outputs require expansion, xControl provides an additional sixteen inputs, sixteen outputs and two RS-232 ports.

In typical conferencing and paging applications, external control inputs accommodate closures from push to talk (PTT) microphone switches while control outputs directly drive LED indicators associated with the PTT mics. Additional output applications may include the triggering of external relays or camera switching devices.The xControl’s flexibility lends support to both everyday and ‘outside-the-box’ applications.

For serial communications with third party projectors, camera controls, routers, and lighting either of xControl’s two RS-232 ports may be configured to receive or transmit commands. An added bonus is Power over Ethernet (PoE) which means xControl may be mounted outside of a rack room and connected to the system with a single CAT5/6 cable via a PoE network switch. Occupying only a 1U, two of the half-rack devices can be mounted side-by-side or xControl may be surface mounted. For either type of mounting, all hardware is included. For direct powering, a PoE injector is included. SymNet Composer open architecture software provides comprehensive set-up and management of xControl.

SYMETRIX LAUNCHES SYMNET TELEPHONE INTERFACE CARD

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – APRIL 2013: Symetrix announces the release of the 2 Line Analog Telephone Interface Card for SymNet. The card integrates a complete set of PSTN telephony functions into SymNet Edge and Radius AEC systems configured for teleconferencing. POST KATRINA, JOE BROWN MEMORIAL PARK RE-OPENS WITH SR SYSTEMS CENTERED ON ASHLY

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – APRIL 2013: Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures it caused left Joe W. Brown Memorial Park in east New Orleans under seven feet of water. The water sat for weeks, leaving everything below its depths to rust and rot. The march toward full recovery has advanced slowly but steadily, and now Joe Brown Park is not only back, it’s better than it was in the summer of 2005, before the fateful hurricane made landfall. Nike, the Allstate Sugar Bowl, and the Drew Brees Foundation joined the city to help fund the $23 million rehab, which includes a new football field and a new track and soccer field. Local A/V integration firm Technical Services Group (TSG) designed and installed sound reinforcement systems for both areas, relying on Ashly Audio processing, amplification, and user control to provide a pair of complementary system that – although different “under the hood” – function identically from the user’s perspective.

“I grew up in New Orleans, and I played high school baseball at Joe Brown Park,” said Patrick Meek, vice president of sales and marketing at TSG, who, together with A/V designer, Scott Richard won the bid and saw the project through to completion. “Being a part of this project was important to me personally. Moreover, it’s a high-profile job that’s being funded by some very big organizations. We worked hard to create a powerful, reliable system on budget, and Ashly’s performance per dollar, for processing, amplification, and user control, was a significant part of our success.”

Because an endless parade of different, non-technically-inclined teachers, park officials, parents, and others would need to be able to reliably use the systems, they had to be completely intuitive. TSG therefore led with the Ashly RW-8C, a four-gang wall plate with eight programmable channel faders and a programmable master fader, each with an on/off button. “The two systems operate as equals from the user’s perspective,” said Meek. “They can walk into either one and understand that the various available microphones and input sources, all labeled on the RW-8C, can be turned on or off and turned up or turned down. Behind the scenes, the processing, amplification, and loudspeakers are different between the two systems, but that’s invisible to them.”

The football field uses an Ashly ne24.24M processor configured with twelve inputs and eight outputs. A Denon CD player joins two Sennheiser HMD-Series headset microphones, a handheld Sennheiser e 935 microphone for vocals, and two Lectrosonics Venue-Series wireless microphones (a belt-pack transmitter lavalier system) and a handheld microphone transmitter at the inputs. Three QSC ISA-Series amplifiers power a Community array composed of two R2-77z, two R2-94z, and two R2-52z loudspeakers. In contrast, the track and field uses an Ashly Pema 8250.70 combination amplifier/processor together with a Protea processing-equipped Ashly ne2400.pe for both signal conditioning, mixing, and power. Again, a Denon CD player allows for music playback, a Sennheiser HMD-Series headset, and a wired Sennheiser e935 microphone provides input for vocals, but this time those inputs are joined by Sennheiser ew-Series wireless lavalier and handheld microphones. Two Community R.5-66TZ and two Community R.5-94TZ loudspeakers complete the system.

MUSICIANS INSTITUTE OF LOS ANGELES INSTALLS API 1608 FOR AUDIO ENGINEERING EDUCATION PROGRAM

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – APRIL 2013: A 32-channel 1608 console will contribute to the education of many audio engineering students at the Musicians Institute College of Contemporary Music for years to come. The 1608 console can be found in Studio C of the college and was installed in the beginning of January, just in time for the spring semester.

The school, located in Los Angeles, has been an important part of music education in southern California since the late 70s and offers a variety of programs, such as Guitar Craft, Music Industry and Audio Engineering, where the 1608 will be used. Approximately two hundred students are currently enrolled in the Audio Engineering program.

The console was sold and installed by Westlake Pro, an API dealer located in North Hollywood. The 1608 was selected to replace the aging large format console in Studio C after a complete rework of the patch bay. “The API was chosen based on recommendations. When we decided to get a new console, many of the instructors requested an API. The final decision was made by our previous program chair after discussing the options with Westlake,” said Krystal Schafer, studio manager.

“The API 1608 is perfect for teaching classic, all-analog, signal chain theory, operation and patch bay to MI’s beginning audio engineering students,” says instructor Barry Rudolph. “The Practical Recording Class is one of the first exposures they have to professional recording consoles.”

Audio Engineering students will learn the basics of the 1608 console in the Practical Recording course during their first quarter and will dive deeper into recording during their second quarter in the Mixing and Mastering course. Students are also able to book studio time on weekends to practice and work on projects.

API 1608 CONSOLE INSTALLED AT UPSTATE NEW YORK’S SOUNDSCAPE STUDIO

BUFFALO, NEW YORK – APRIL 2013: James Calabrese, owner of Soundscape in Buffalo, New York has purchased a 32-channel 1608 with an expander. The veteran composer, engineer and studio-owner chose the 1608 console as the prized piece of his upstate New York dwelling.

“I first heard an API when I was in New York helping to cut tracks for Miki Howard’s debut album Come Share My Love and the engineer used a Lunchbox to EQ the massive electric piano part,” says Calabrese. He has been in the market ever since.

His studio also features other API gear such as the 3124 four-channel mic pre, a 500V rack, and four 550 EQ’s, as well as two 525 compressors, now in the console. The console was purchased from API rep, Vintage King of Detroit.

James started as a composer, where he recorded original music for commercials, corporate and broadcast video scoring, in pop, rock, jazz, and classical styles. Some clients include Fisher Price, Hasbro, Xerox, Kodak, Phillips Electronics, and artists like Pointer Sisters, Ray Charles, and the Goo Goo Dolls. He even co-wrote the track, Where You Are on Whitney Houston’s multi-platinum second album, Whitney. “I’ve collaborated with New York composer Ken Higgins to score a few films and documentaries along with the globally-syndicated miniseries Hemmingway for Daniel Wilson Productions,” he says of his experiences.

As of late, he has completed sessions on his new 1608 with pianist arranger transcriber Krista Seddon, remixed a tune for LA-based guitarist Michael Campagna for a Varese Sarabande library, and has also mixed an Old Navy commercial.

“There really wasn’t any other choice,” says Calabrese. “I’m still only at the beginning of my knowledge of the 1608; still learning the center section, love the sound, love the build quality and I’m looking forward to some larger tracking sessions in the next few months. I liked the fact that API was going to be around a while. I wanted a desk that I’d probably keep the rest of my career.”

St. Andrews Lutheran Church Chooses Earthworks Choir Microphones

SYMETRIX SYMNET RADIUS 12×8 DSP BREATHE FRESH LIFE INTO ST. LUCY PARISH

CAMPBELL, CALIFORNIA – APRIL 2013: For nearly a century, St. Lucy Parish has been a cornerstone of religious life in Campbell, California. Its congregation grew steadily throughout the 1900s, prompting moves to ever-larger facilities, and culminating in the construction of a 1,200-seat sanctuary in 1967. Today St. Lucy Parish holds daily mass in that sanctuary, and on the weekend it is filled repeatedly for multiple masses, many of which use different musicians and groups that tailor their messages to different groups. Recently, the church hired local A/V integrator Zamar Media Solutions of San Jose to replace its decades-old sound reinforcement system. The new system is centered on a pair of cost-effective Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 DSP, which network together seamlessly using the Dante protocol and provide customized, open-architecture programming.

“St. Lucy Parish had been limping along with an insufficient sound system that was twenty- or thirty-years old,” explained Michael Dow, president of Zamar Media Solutions. “It was characterized by rack mixers with big knobs and inadequate ceiling speakers. I drew up a proposal for them a few years ago, but they decided to wait.” However, the old system recently failed completely, and they called me up. I dusted off my earlier proposal and made a few edits to bring it up to date.” For example, Dow had originally specified Symetrix SymNet Express DSP, but with the new Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 now available, he recognized that it would provide more processing power, a better I/O count, and near-zero latency Dante networked audio.

In addition to the new DSP, Dow and Zamar Media Solutions customer, system Programmer Tim Fairbairn equipped St. Lucy Parish with an entirely new front end and an entirely new loudspeaker system. Four new Shure ULXD digital wireless microphones replaced their old wireless mics. In addition, new Audix MG15 podium microphones and a pair of Audix M1255 condensers for the choir provide full-frequency capture worthy of the system’s back end. Music playback devices, an on-stage PreSonus band mixer, and multiple input jacks complete the input list. Powersoft’s M-series amplifiers power Martin Audio OmniLine loudspeakers and subwoofers, arrayed as left-right main, left-right side fill, and center subs. Distributed sound provides coverage throughout the building. Additional outputs include a Listen Technologies assisted listening system and a Denon PMD580 MP3/Wave recorder.

“There are a lot of differences from service to service, both in terms of the musicians present and in terms of the audio media required, and St. Lucy Parish is benefitting from the SymNet Radius 12×8’s ability to customize the processing on each of the many input channels,” said Dow. “Between the two boxes, we have twenty-four inputs and sixteen outputs, and any input can be sent to any output because they are networked together using Dante. We’re happy to see that Dante is being embraced by the industry because it’s easy to use and has almost no latency.” Fairbairn and Dow programmed the SymNet Radius 12x8s using Symetrix’ SymNet Composer software, which proved to be a transparent upgrade in feature set from the previous design software, SymNet Designer. “Users control the system using an Extron TLP 1000MV ten-inch touchscreen, which communicates with the SymNet Radius 12×8 system, the Furman power sequencing, the Denon PMD850 recorder, the music playback devices, and the entire dual screen projection system.

Fairbairn was present at the choir’s first experience with the new system. “The choir members were absolutely floored by the quality of the new sound system,” he said. “Indeed, this marks the first time ever that the choir can be heard by the rest of the congregation. During practice, the choir members took turns touring the seating area while the rest kept singing so that everyone could hear how well the choir can be heard now. Also, while the organist was playing for the choir, the choir could be clearly heard over the organ, a new experience! I overheard a lot of happy responses to the system at the following mass, such as ‘night and day!’ and ‘remarkable!’”
