WITHOUT ADDING A SINGLE NEW RIGGING POINT, DANLEY SPEAKERS DRAMATICALLY IMPROVE COVERAGE AT XAVIER UNIVERSITY’S CINTAS CENTER

CINCINNATI, OHIO: The Musketeers men’s basketball team is the standout athletic program at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over the last dozen years, the team has made an appearance in an NCAA tournament in all but one, and Forbes places it among the nation’s top twenty most valuable college basketball programs. The Musketeers play at the 10,500-seat Cintas Center at Xavier University, which was built in 2000. Xavier University recently asked consultant Anthony James Partners and local integrator ICB Audio & Video to update the sound system with increased coverage of seating areas that were poorly covered by the original system. In part because no additional rigging points could be added, the solution centered on lightweight Danley loudspeakers and subwoofers with excellent pattern control and exceptional sound quality.

“The Cintas Center is a large venue, and Xavier University does a good job keeping up with it’s A/V system,” said John Keller, who configured the system and the rigging with ICB Audio & Video. “They wanted the new system to improve upon the old system’s coverage, which had quite a few holes – most notably in the first few rows on the floor. The big trick was that we couldn’t add any rigging points nor add significant weight to the rigging points that existed.

“Of course,” he continued, “the reason you get holes in coverage is because the speaker is delivering the wrong pattern at the wrong location, but the direct and obvious solution of adding new locations wasn’t on the table. Nevertheless, the coverage, efficiency, and relatively lightweight design of Danley loudspeakers allowed us to meet the facility’s goals within those stringent constraints.” An interesting side note, when Danley demo’d its products for the Xavier officials, they responded to its noticeably superior fidelity with a chant that exceeded the most indulgent fantasy of the most optimistic contractor. “They literally chanted, ‘Cut the check!’ and ‘Give the man the P.O.!’ to the head of purchasing,” recalled Mike Hedden, Danley president. Anticipating a chuckle of incredulity, he added, “They really did do that!”

The new Danley system replaced the old system, cluster for cluster. Ten clusters use a pair of Danley SH-96 full-range loudspeakers stacked in opposite orientations to provide complete coverage of the upper and lower bowls. Two additional clusters use an SH-96 with two Danley SH-64s to provide expanded coverage at either end of the bowl. A total of six Danley TH-115 subwoofers hang independently in two rows along the arena’s long axis. Each cluster is dead hung from a single point because a pick point wasn’t possible; the catwalks and other ceiling hardware couldn’t safely support it.

Keller was able to reuse the wiring infrastructure, and ICB replaced the distributed audio system for all of the facilities outside of the bowl with a BiAmp system networked via CobraNet the previous year. A 32-channel Yamaha LS9 console serves as a new front end, with CobraNet output feeding a new QSC Basis DSP system. The two DSP systems share audio via CobraNet. A rack of QSC CX- and PL-series amplifiers power the Danley loudspeaker and subwoofers.

“The coverage and sound of the new system are dramatically better than they were in the old system,” said Keller. “There are no dead spots, and the cabinets work together nicely in the clusters. How that happens exactly is Danley’s magic secret. In the areas that were covered previously, the coverage is now more even. The client is very pleased, and I’m impressed that we were able to swap out all the speakers within a two-week window in order not to conflict with their basketball schedule or corporate sponsors. Using the same rigging points was really the only option to get the job done.”

Christian Artist FOH Engineer Relies on new Yamaha CL5 Digital Console

BUENA PARK, Calif.–Known for front of house mixing dozens of Christian artists, front of house engineer, Harold Rubens, has found much success using the new Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console on several tours in 2012 and early 2013. “CTS Audio (Franklin, Tenn.) has been my preferred audio provider,” states Rubens “They provide us with racks and stacks and any additional audio support we need. For the shows I’m doing now the CL I’m using is owned by musician, Brandon Heath, who purchased the console through CTS for his “Blue Mountain” Tour.” Once I mixed on the CL5 for Brandon’s national tour, I liked it so much that I turned right around and took the same console out to mix the Andrew Peterson “Behold The Lamb of God” Christmas tour.”

“The networking capabilities of the CL Series using Dante makes everything easier,” Rubens said. “On the “Blue Mountain” Tour, it was easy to just plug in a computer and instantly record and playback all 64 tracks for both virtual sound check and recording. On Andrew Peterson’s tour, we were touring with one CL5, but with two sold-out shows at the Ryman, we added a second CL5 to accommodate additional instruments and guest performers. The console’s networking made it really easy to add the second CL5 and also be able to sound check everything using the playback from the previous show.”

“I think that the CL5 sounds incredible,” adds Rubens. “It has exceeded any expectation I had for the console. I’ve used Yamaha digital consoles extensively at one point or another on tours and/or installs, and I was anxious to see how the CL5 was going to perform. I knew about the long list of new features, but I still wondered how it was going to sound. Needless to say, I was very impressed which is why I recommended that Brandon buy one along with two Rio3224-D boxes to use as part of his own touring system.”

Andrew Peterson’s “Behold The Lamb Of God” show has been touring for 13 years. Each year, the tour makes a stop at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville which production support from CTS. “The show is a complicated concert to mix,” says Rubens. “There is a seven-piece string section, drums, percussion, bass, lap steel, dobro, mandolin, ukele, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, piano, hammer dulcimer, lap dulcimer, accordion, along with six vocalists who take lead on different songs.” The concert featured special appearances by Steven Curtis Chapman, Stuart Duncan, Jeff Taylor, Buddy Green, Sierra Hull and members of Union Station (Allison Krause’s band).”

“When Harold came into the Ryman with Andrew’s annual Christmas show, it was the first time anyone had brought in a Yamaha CL5,” notes Les Banks, Ryman Auditorium Tech Supervisor. “I had previously attended a demo but had not yet seen one in action. As soon as Harold powered up the CL5 and played the previous evening’s show (using Virtual Soundcheck), I instantly commented on how clear the console sounded. The top end was clear and the bottom was tight…no smoke and mirrors here; great mic pre’s and plug-ins. As the Ryman’s audio supervisor, I am in the unique position to audition every type of console on the planet through the same PA, and this console rocks! For its price and size, the CL is jammed-packed with performance and features. It gets all A’s on my report card!”

Rubens said that while out with Heath, things were sounding so good that opener, Matt Maher, decided to release a live project using the tracks acquired during the tour from the Nuendo Live function of the Yamaha CL. “Yamaha digital consoles all have different feature sets that are not always available on other Yamaha consoles; i.e. the USB recorder on the LS9, the touch screen on the M7CL, and the direct to matrix send on inputs on M7s and 5Ds.The CL is a culmination of all those features plus a whole lot more, and to top it all, it sounds really, really good. This is an amazing package at an incredible price point.”

Bauder Audio Provides Support for Record-Breaking Camp Out for Hunger Benefit

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Bauder Audio Systems, Inc. (Philadelphia) and Indre Recording and Production (Havertown, PA) provided support, once again, for WMMR Radio’s Preston & Steve Show 2012 Camp Out for Hunger benefit. A complex, around-the-clock, five-day, live remote broadcast involving VIP guests, bands, outdoor stunts, and two dozen tractor trailers gathering food from thousands of generous people, The benefit collected a record-breaking 627,678 pounds of food and over $100K in monetary donations. Featured guests hailed from the worlds of sports, music, TV, and politics.

The event takes place in a large tent installed in the parking lot of the Metroplex Shopping Center in Plymouth Meeting. Bauder provided a new Yamaha CL5 digital console for use at FOH and for bands monitor mixes along with a Yamaha M7CL digital console with a Dugan-MY16 card for broadcast. The tent PA consisted of all NEXO loudspeakers powered by NXAMP 4×4’s and 4×1’s. PS15 R2s and RS18s were used for the main PA while PS10 R2s and PS8s were used for fold back and fills. The live bands were mixed down by Indre Recording’s broadcast truck outfitted with a Yamaha DM2000 and fed back to the M7CL.

“Whenever I’m working on a NEXO PA, I tend to simply pop the presets and go, as opposed to executing the normal laborious tuning process that other “out of the box” systems require,” states Chris “Sully” Sullivan, FOH Engineer. “It’s refreshing, and certainly saves money on labor calls.” Sully also used the new Yamaha CL5 digital console and said, “Even with no formal training on the CL5, within minutes I found my hands intuitively finding all of the knobs my brain was asking for….”

12 channels of stereo play back can be used for any given live band performance, helicopter landing, or other stunt taking place during a remote Preston and Steve Show. The core of the broadcast consists of five people talking about any number of topics on the radio. “In addition to the five primary mics, I can have anywhere from two hardwired guest mics to 10 wireless mics up and all running at one time,” states Rodney Byrd, Assistant Chief Engineer, Greater Philadelphia Radio Group. “With the introduction of the Dugan card for the Yamaha M7CL console, it has changed the dynamics of how I mix the show so much that it is now on my equipment rider. The sound quality that we experienced during the week of Camp Out for Hunger sounded like we were back in our own studio. I was able to walk out front and hear the PA without having to worry about whether all of the mics were up. It is like having an A1 that you don’t have to talk to; and it just works right out of the box.”

Indre Recording and Production of Philadelphia recently installed a Yamaha DM2000 digital console in their flagship remote truck. The remote recording package now offers 96 channels of audio from the stage via fiber optic snakes and MADI integration. “The DM2000 is doing double duty, serving as the main mixing console as well as a full Pro Tools control surface for the truck’s HDIII recorder,” states Michael Comstock, Owner and Head Engineer, Indre Recording.

Hometown Church for Lincoln Brewster Replaces Existing Point ‘N Shoot System with NEXO GEO S12 Line Array

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Bayside Church in Roseville, California, known to many as the home to house of worship leader and influential musician, Lincoln Brewster, recently upgraded its speaker system for their 2,300-seat main campus location with a NEXO GEO S12 line array, RS18′s, and NXAmps. Bayside Church has a total of four locations, and over 12,000 members of the congregation attend worship services on any given weekend. Bayside Church and Brewster, who frequently leads worship at the church when not on tour, have considerable influence on the Christian scene. “Lincoln was very much involved in our decision to replace our existing d&b system with the NEXO system,” states Lee Fields, Senior Audio Director for all audio systems and audio staff across the campuses. “It was really a joint effort; Lincoln trusts me, but at the same time, I don’t underestimate his talents either. He is an incredible audio engineer in his own right. After all, he has mixed most of his own records.” The NEXO system was purchased through Special Event Services (SES), Sacramento.

Fields said that the core of the change in line array systems was that the church seating had changed drastically. “The d&b system was a point and shoot system that mainly covered the floor (about 900 seats), and large delay boxes covered the remaining 1,000ish seats in the bleacher sections. The new seating arrangement is still 900 on the floor and another 1,400 or so in new stadium-style seats, adding in another 500 new seating locations. With the previous system, over half of the seating area would have been in coverage by delay speakers—not ideal with the worship experience we are trying to create. The NEXO line array has allowed us to cover the room much better from a single source, and every seat sounds amazing and surprisingly similar to the next.” On a typical weekend, Bayside’s worship band consists of 6-7 contemporary worship musicians.

The second reason for the change out the system was a bit more philosophical Fields notes. “Lincoln and I both have been to hundreds of churches and have seen a variety of PA systems: PAs that rival stadium touring rigs, PAs way too small for big rooms, PAs way too big for small rooms, PAs that sound great and are just right for a church, and PAs that cost way too much money for a church to be spending money on. With all that said, we finally found a product that far exceeds our needs sonically and that is also a perfect representation of being a good steward when it comes to our church’s money. This is the biggest win for us on a personal level, knowing that we didn’t have to spend zillions of dollars on a system. We are astonished by the performance of the GEO S12 rig/ It feels great knowing our church can go about the duty of assisting people with the money we saved by choosing the product we did, and we didn’t sacrifice anything, rather, we gained everything.”

Fields has been a touring engineer for close to ten years and says he’s literally seen all of the various line arrays available. “I kept running across the GEO S12 at medium size festivals, at conferences, and other events. Every time I got my hands on them, I loved them! A huge bonus is how supportive the team at Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems has been. Jake Cody, the House of Worship Manager, has been an invaluable resource to me, Lincoln, and to our church. The heart of the Company, and Jake, is to help churches in anyway they can. SYMETRIX JUPTER AND ARC-WEB DELIVER SMARTPHONE CONTROL TO CHANGE A RESTAURANT INTO A BAR!

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH: Zest Kitchen and Bar would be near the top of the heap in both the “hip” and “forward-thinking” categories were it located in, say, New York City. But on the high desert of Salt Lake City, Zest’s commitment to local organic produce and liquor, its haut vegetarian menu, and its nightly changeover from conscientious eatery to thumping dance club put it in a category all its own. When veteran restaurateur Casey Staker conceived of Zest, he knew it had to have a great sound system – and he also knew that he had to have ultimate control over the performance and volume of that sound system. Local A/V integration firm Performance Audio obliged, using a Symetrix Jupiter 8 processor to dial in Zest’s fidelity and a Symetrix ARC-WEB to provide custom control of all relevant parameters directly from Staker’s smartphone.

“Staker has been in the restaurant and bar business for a long time,” said Jake Peery, system design & installation expert with Performance Audio and the individual responsible for Zest’s custom sound system. “More than once, he’s seen a good time ruined by overzealous DJs, who effectively chase patrons out the door with sheer volume. Since he plans on a regular rotation of local DJs along with not-infrequent shows by national DJs on tour, he wanted some personal insurance that no such thing would happen at Zest. I recognized that the Symetrix ARC-WEB was the answer. It would give him all the control he wanted on his smartphone.”

The Symetrix Jupiter 8 processor fills most of its eight inputs from an iPod dock, a microphone, a computer and a balanced stereo pair located at a modest FOH position. Repurposed QSC RMX-series loudspeakers and JBL Control 25s join a collection of new JBL AM7212s, AC28s, and ASB6118s to provide the system with serious output. A repurposed Crown CTS4200 powers the loudspeakers in less critical locations, while new Ashly KLR 4000 and KLR 5000 amplifiers power the most prominent loudspeakers and subwoofers. “The Ashly KLR series gives me the best bang for the buck,” said Peery. “Nothing else touches them on price, and the output is loud and clean.”

Of course, Staker wouldn’t be at Zest all the time, and his staff would need to control the system in his absence, so Peery installed a Symetrix ARC-2e wall panel remote in the manager’s office. The ARC-2e allows the staff to recall presets for different modes of operation. However, Staker’s ARC-WEB control digs deeper and allows him alone to override zone volumes. “In addition to being a great sounding and inexpensive device, the Symetrix Jupiter’s support of ARC-WEB was a deciding factor in this installation,” said Peery. “ARC-WEB is easy to set-up and use, and is compatible with many popular web browsers, operating systems and devices, including iPhone/iPad and Android. Casey’s on an Android device right now, but that might change. If and when it does, ARC-WEB will still work just the same.”

“Controlling the system from my phone is very cool,” admitted Staker. “Every DJ hears something different. With the system Jake designed, I can control the volume from anywhere in the restaurant, and I can make individual adjustments to the dining room, the bar, or the dance floor. I can pin it to what I want, not what the DJ wants.”

SYMETRIX SYMNET RADIUS 12X8 DSP PLAYS BALL AT PHILADELPHIA’S WELLS FARGO ARENA

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA: FM 97.5 is better known to Philadelphia sports fans as The Fanatic, and recent agreements with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Philadelphia Flyers gave its listeners a new reason to cheer. As of this season, the station will broadcast all 76ers and Flyers games in full FM stereo and full FM bandwidth, a substantial improvement over the previous station’s AM broadcasts. Both teams play in The Wells Fargo Center, and Greater Media, the owner of FM 97.5, recognized that a substantial upgrade in its broadcast audio infrastructure would be required to deliver reliable, high-fidelity game day sound. In what is perhaps the one of the nation’s first Dante radio broadcast digital backbone system in a professional sports arena. Greater Media installed three Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 processors with built-in Dante digital audio networking. The SymNet Radius 12x8s gather inputs from three strategic locations in the Wells Fargo Center and deliver them with full fidelity and near-zero latency to the station’s codec.

“It was apparent that a lot of The Wells Fargo Center’s broadcast audio infrastructure might have been appropriate for the fidelity of an AM broadcast but that it wouldn’t work for an FM broadcast,” said Rodney Byrd, engineer with Greater Media. “AM is forgiving; FM is not.” And because bringing the fidelity up to FM standards would require a complete overhaul, it was an excellent time to build an infrastructure that would be flexible, easy to use, and amenable to future changes. “The Fanatic has the contract for multiple years, and the expectation is that they will renew,” explained Pat Conneen, an audio engineer who contracts with Greater Media, was an A/V integrator, and a is also a Symetrix rep. “So, they wanted to get it right from the start.”

Several issues presented themselves, but foremost was the disparate locations used by the players, the 76ers announcers, and the Flyers announcers. The players, of course, use the locker rooms and the main floor. The 76ers’ announcers use an area on the balcony, and the Flyers’ announcers use a space adjacent to the press box. The previous radio station physically moved its equipment several hundred feet depending on which team was playing. “It was clear to us that that was not what we wanted to do,” laughed Byrd. A better plan was to place a SymNet Radius 12×8 at each of the three locations and rely on its Dante network backbone to deliver audio to the Telos Zephyr Xstream codec via the SymNet Radius 12×8 located near the press box.

“Of course, cabling all of that up with copper would have been a tremendous and costly undertaking,” said Byrd. “In contrast, the Dante bus requires only CAT6 cabling, and it allows us to push signals from anywhere to anywhere within the network.” Conneen added, “We were originally considering using another manufacturer’s system with a proprietary digital network, but then Symetrix announced the SymNet Edge system [to which the Radius 12x8 is related]. The features, benefits, and industry acceptance of Dante made it the clear choice. Personally, both Rodney and I have history in the live sound industry, and there Dante is being used to send huge numbers of channels between inputs, and outputs of consoles. If it was working for that application, I was confident it would be robust for our needs.”

He continued, “I also knew that Symetrix has a longstanding reputation within the broadcast industry for delivering clear, high-fidelity audio. Its analog components are excellent, and its processing algorithms are transparent.”

The other major component of the installation is a pair of digital mixing consoles, a Soundcraft unit for the Flyers and a PreSonus unit for the 76ers. Signal processing duties are shared between the consoles and the SymNet Radius 12x8s. “The SymNet units are flexible enough to bring in either line inputs or mic-level inputs, so we have a lot of flexibility in terms of which inputs go where,” said Byrd. “We’re still working out exactly how we want to control them on a day to day basis, but the most likely solution will be to create custom SymVue panels for a PC interface.” Because the Radius 12x8s are easily IP addressable, the station can make changes to the system either at the arena or remotely from its broadcast studios.

Because the Dante network accepts 128 channels of audio, it will be easy for Greater Media to expand the system with the addition of another SymNet Radius 12×8 or a SymNet Edge processor. No additional wiring will be necessary to bring new signals to the station’s codec.

Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems Launches Yamaha Ri8-D and Ro8-D Input and Output Rack Units

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced the worldwide launch today of the Yamaha Ri8-D and Ro8-D input and output rack units that will maximize the live sound experience by using the same Dante audio network protocol as that found in the new CL Series Digital Audio Consoles. The small, but mighty 1U rack mount units provide additional options for flexible system design and implementation, while maintaining the excellent sound quality found in the CL Series and Rio3224-D and Rio1608-D I/O racks.

Both sound quality and system layout flexibility were enhanced in the CL Series by separating I/O hardware from the mixing console. The new Ri8-D and Ro8-D take that freedom one step further with the number of inputs and outputs available wherever they are required for sound reinforcement installation and I/O distribution.

In addition to working with CL Series components, by using Dante-MY16-AUD card(s) with the new Rio units and a Yamaha PM5D will create a 96kHz system. The new Rio units can also be used with M7CL and LS9 Digital Consoles, DME64N Digital Mix Engines, and other compatible Yamaha products such as NEXO NXAmps using an NXDT104 card, further enhancing the Dante networking experience. The Ri8-D head amplifiers can even be controlled directly from the interface of the M7CL, LS9, or other compatible console.

The Ri8-D and Ro8-D can be used in any combination with the Rio3224-D and Rio1608-D. Availability is expected spring of 2013 with a targeted MRSP of $1,900 for the Ri8-D and $1,700 for the Ro8-D.
