DANLEY EXPANDS LINE OF OS “OUTDOOR SERIES” FULLY-WEATHERIZED LOUDSPEAKERS

GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA: Danley Sound Labs, maker of innovative loudspeakers and subwoofers, announces the expansion of its OS “Outdoor Series” of fully-weatherized loudspeakers, including a new fully-weatherized subwoofer. Although all Danley products are optionally available with level-2 weatherization, which includes fiberglass seams, stainless steel hardware, and protective coatings over all wooden components, the fact remains that those wooden components will have a shorter life span in the elements than they would have had in an indoor installation. In contrast, Danley OS products are constructed of molded plastic with a custom injection molded shell rated to last fifty-years. The cabinet is sealed so the inner components are also protected from harsh outdoor elements. The materials are sourced from within a half-hour of Danley’s Gainesville, Georgia headquarters – a boon for large orders and/or short lead times.

“Like all of our Synergy Horn loudspeakers, the Danley OS-80 sounds fantastic,” said Mike Hedden, president of Danley Sound Labs. “Fidelity is excellent and distortion is remarkably low at all SPLs, and the OS-80 has the same highly-articulated coverage pattern and arrayability for which Danley is known. What sets the OS-80 apart is that its construction and materials make it impervious to the weather, for years and decades to come. Our local sources and molding machinery make it easy for us to turn over large Outdoor Series orders on short notice. Moreover, the molding process itself is very efficient, which allows us to sell the OS products at fiercely competitive prices.”

Soon, the OS-80′s versatile 80-degree conical coverage pattern will be joined by other OS models with a diversity of coverage patterns that will give designers greater flexibility to meet the needs of a range of outdoor situations. These will include the OS-90 and OS-100. In addition, the new Danley OS-115LF subwoofer will extend the bottom end of the OS line and the OS Nano will be the power of Danley in the palm of your hand.

ABOUT DANLEY SOUND LABS Danley Sound Labs is the exclusive home of Tom Danley, one of the most innovative loudspeaker designers in the industry today and recognized worldwide as a pioneer for “outside the box” thinking in professional audio technology.

Montreal Jazz Festival Front Loaded With Yamaha Consoles

Guy Vincent

BUENA PARK, Calif.—From June 26-July 5 at venues across Montreal, the annual Montreal Jazz Festival featured a boat load of musical guests from Earth, Wind & Fire, B.B. King, Tony Bennett, and Diana Krall, to Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Terence Blanchard, and Nikki Yanofsky to name a few.

Solotech of Montreal provided the majority of the audio production for the 30 stages and stacked them with Yamaha digital audio consoles. Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems pitched in for five of the stages: Scene TD, the main outdoor stage, was outfitted with two Yamaha CL5 digital consoles and three Rio-3224D input/output boxes. Two CL5s and two Rio-3224Ds were in position at Theatre Maisonneuve, Lounge Heineken used a QL5 and one Rio-3224D, and Club Soda and Savoy both had new Yamaha QL5 digital audio consoles. The Savoy also used a Rio-3224D.

Front of House engineer, Guy Vincent, has been mixing sound for over 30 years and says he has worked with a lot of digital boards but his favorite is the Yamaha CL5. “The feature I like the most Is the Premium Rack. It is amazing how warm the sound is by activating any of the plug-ins. I also like the custom faders.” Vincent used a CL5 at the Maisonneuve Theater during the Festival mixing Terence Blanchard and others. He is currently on tour with Florence K using a CL5.

Front of house engineer, Richie Forte, used his own personal Yamaha LS9-32 console at the Metropolis during the Festival for artist Nikki Yanofsky. “According to my dear friends at Yamaha, my LS9 was one of the very first in eastern Canada, a fact I’m very proud of,” states Forte. “I’ve taken this little workhouse and pushed it beyond its limits. With the use of a fiber optic snake capable of transporting 32X8 of the LS9′s 32X16 i/o, plus one channel of bi-directional high speed EtherSound transport built in, I am able to use the two MY card slots on the LS9 to connect to my two Yamaha SB168-ES stage boxes for a total on stage analog i/o of 64X24.”

Richie Forte

Forte said that his current console as well as the two Yamaha digital consoles he previously owned, have preformed flawlessly and reliably. “It’s this ease of use, size, weight, flexibility, and “bang for buck” price point that has kept me a loyal Yamaha user and owner since 1997.” He’s now in Europe and using a Yamaha CL5 and says he’s “truly blown away by the sound of the console” and equally happy that its flexibility and workflow has been greatly refined and fulfills everything on his wish list. “I’m looking forward to upgrading to a QL5, my fourth Yamaha console very soon!”

Stephane Grimm

Stephane Grimm, who mixed The Jordan Officer Trio and Betty Bonifassi Chants on a new Yamaha QL console at both Club Soda and Club Savoy, said he’s really into the new QL and has used a Yamaha CL a number of times. “I was really impressed by the QL, and having the touch screen makes it totally easy to use, Grimm says. The four user layers is a wonderful feature especially now that you are able to color identify the faders, making it impossible to miss the channel you’re looking for. I also like the fact that it is fully compatible with the CL series, without even having to convert the file. WOW!” Grimm also said the new plug-ins is a great feature. “The 2-band Dynamic EQ, works very well especially on vocals and other instruments that change tones.”

NASHVILLE’S HISTORIC SOUND EMPORIUM STUDIOS INSTALLS AN API LEGACY PLUS

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE – JULY 2014: Sound Emporium Studios is a go-to destination for artists including Willie Nelson, Kenny Chesney, and Alison Krauss, not to mention major projects by T-Bone Burnett. The facilities, built by “Cowboy” Jack Clement in 1969, are the birthplace of legendary recordings including Kenny Rogers’ The Gambler, REM’s Document, Sammy Davis Jr.’s final album, as well as Taylor Swift’s first. To meet the growing needs of its diverse clients, Sound Emporium consulted Rob Dennis at API reseller Rack-N-Roll, who directed the studio towards a 48-channel Legacy Plus console.

“Our clients have long requested an API in that room,” said studio manager, Juanita Copeland. “The flexibility, build and sonic quality, along with the reputation of API made it an easy decision. It just brings together a lot of great API sonic solutions into one user-friendly package. Having the 2500 bus compressor is the icing on the cake.” Copeland also mentioned having 48 inputs, 48 returns, and 12 aux inputs is a huge improvement to the studio’s former setup. The room can also be used for mixing now thanks to the Uptown 2 automation.

Since commissioning the console early this summer, it’s been used for tracking, overdubs, and some mixing. The Legacy Plus is already booked for major clients in the coming months, including one of the top 100 guitar players of all time, and a critically-acclaimed alternative country artist. Recordings for the hit ABC show Nashville are also booked for when filming resumes this month, as well as several rock projects later in the year. “We are just thrilled to finally have such an amazing console in that historic room!” adds Copeland.

ZONA RECORDING STUDIOS ADDS API’s THE BOX

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK – JULY 2014: Recording engineer John Zona works with much of the talent in the artistic-rich area of Huntington, New York through Zona Recording Studios. While currently running the studio around his full-time gig of pin striping motorcycles, he is transitioning his time mixing and recording from a hobby to a full-scale operation. As part of that transition, Zona has added API’s THE BOX to help bring enthusiasm and excellence to clients, ensuring they’ll come back and refer others.

“I am very pleased with my decision to purchase THE BOX,” recalls Zona. “After shopping around, doing research, and even demo-ing the board at the API headquarters in Maryland, it became clear API was the way to go. I am very impressed with the quality of the EQs, mic pre’s, as well as the reputation, construction, and warranty of the board.”

Zona, who is also an accomplished drummer, bass guitarist and composer, is presently taking the final steps in reconfiguring and wiring his updated studio space. While doing that, he’s using THE BOX to re-mix music he’s previously recorded. “I am getting results I had not even anticipated,” shares Zona. “I look forward to being an API customer for years to come.”

Yamaha CL V2.0 Now Available

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced the availability of Version 2.0 for Yamaha CL Series Digital Audio Consoles. This most recent update includes enhancements for sound reinforcement applications as well as mix-minus capabilities for the broadcast market, broadening the range of applications where CL Series performance can be advantageous. One significant enhancement in V2.0 is discovery and head amp control for the new, compact QL Series that also inherits CL Series features and performance. A QL console can function as both monitor mixer and I/O rack, for example, while a front-of-house CL console can remotely control the head amp gain of the QL console’s I/O.

Other new features in CL V2.0 include DCA Roll-Out: Channels assigned to DCA groups can be instantly called up to the console faders for enhanced operational flexibility; output DCA enables the Stereo/Mono bus masters, Mix bus masters, and Matrix bus masters to be assigned to DCA groups. Mix Minus, an important feature in broadcast applications is now provided; with one simple operation the signal from a particular channel can be removed from a specified bus.

With Read Only Scene Memory, it is now possible to create read-only scene memories. A new Daisy Chain Insert feature allows two devices to be inserted into one channel or bus for enhanced processing freedom. A GR Meter (dynamics meter) Option within the Channel Name Display will show the Dynamics 1 and Dynamics 2 gain reduction meters in the channel name display.

Future CL updates include built-in Dugan automatic mixing similar to the new QL Series and additional support for broadcast applications.

The CL V2.0 update is available via download from the Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems web site free of charge. For more information on the Yamaha V2.0, visit www.yamahaca.com.

SYMETRIX RADIUS 12X8 DANTE™ NETWORK DSP IS THE BACKBONE FOR CHICKIE’S AND PETE’S CRAB HOUSE AND SPORTS BAR

ATLANTIC CITY, NEW JERSEY – JULY 2014: What started as a late-night effort between two brothers in 1987 to perfect their mother’s secret recipe turned into Crabfries® and launched their fledgling restaurant, Chickie’s and Pete’s Crab House and Sports Bar, to critical and commercial success. ESPN recently proclaimed the establishment to be the “Number One Sports Bar in North America” and Maxim Magazine deemed it the “Greatest American Neighborhood Bar.” Now a well-established Philadelphia favorite, Chickie’s and Pete’s is expanding its reach and recently opened its 26th location in Atlantic City’s Tropicana Resort & Casino. As with all of the other Chickie’s and Pete’s locations designed and installed by Cherry Hill, New Jersey-based Pro Systems, the new one uses Symetrix processing. This time it’s two SymNet Radius 12×8 Dante network audio DSPs paired with two SymNet xIn 12 and two xOut 12 audio I/O expanders for a total I/O count of 48 by 40.

Pro Systems’ Rich Stout and Jim McCann designed, programmed, and installed the new system. “For the Atlantic City location, the client wanted an upscale sports bar feel consistent with their ‘Best Sports Bar’ award from ESPN,” said Stout. “Every Chickie’s and Pete’s location that we have installed has incorporated Symetrix processing, and they’ve always been pleased with the sound quality and ease of use. At Atlantic City, we went with an HDMI 1080p solution with lots of individual audio zones. To accommodate all the inputs and zones, we chose two Radius 12×8 processors paired with two each xIn 12 and xOut 12 breakout boxes. The Radius’ integrated Dante network capacity made it easy, reliable, and inexpensive to route audio from box to box.

In addition to the Symetrix backbone, the system consists of Crown amplifiers feeding JBL Control and AE Series loudspeakers across 39 zones. Two Crestron HDMI DM switchers support 38 by 64 channels of video/audio, and several Crestron V15 touch panels enable end user control of audio, video, and lighting from a variety of strategic locations.

Rich Stout commented, “The client has no idea about the underlying complexity of a system like this nor should they have to. The trick is to make it simple enough that anyone walking up to the Crestron panel can run the entire system. With Symetrix and other premium hardware vendors we achieved that goal at Atlantic City, and it is now one of Chickie’s and Pete’s favorite locations.”

ABOUT SYMETRIX Symetrix is dedicated to making life sound better. As a world leader in the development and manufacturing of digital audio signal processing (DSP) systems and accessories, Symetrix provides best in class audio management solutions to businesses, schools, non-profits and government organizations.

MPR System Brings Series Surge Protection to Vertical Power Strips

Fairfield, NJ–– Middle Atlantic is expanding its Modular Power Raceway system to include surge protection capabilities with two exclusive benefits. The introduction of Series Protection™ modules for the MPR Series marks the industry’s first vertical power strip to offer series type non-degrading surge protection and its first fully configurable power solution to do the same.

The new Series Protection™ modules will also provide series type surge protection to all cascading modules in each circuit. A patent-pending technology, Series Protection™ is the fastest-responding series type surge suppression currently available.

The Modular Power Raceway system allows integrators to configure their own ETL-listed vertical power solution using off-the-shelf parts. Integrators now have the option of incorporating reliable surge protection into their custom power design. When installed as the first circuit within the power strip, these modules will extend that series type surge protection to all connected units that follow. In addition, the module sits on top of raceway channel, which allows circuit wiring between modules and unimpeded connection to the termination.

The new MPR modules join the Middle Atlantic family of rackmount and RackLink™ power products leveraging Series Protection™ technology. Modules are available in 15 or 20 amp configurations with outlet options being controlled or on when connected.
