Sound Works Pro Tapped for Philfest, Chooses NEXO and Yamaha

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Philfest is an annual collaboration between A&O Productions and Students for Ecological and Environmental Development (SEED) at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The event features bluegrass and folk music as part of an effort to promote environmental awareness and also raises money for the Rocky Mountain Institute, a non-profit aimed at the sustainable use of resources. The day is held in honor of Phil Semmer, a former SEED member, who passed away while studying abroad.

Held this year in early May at Northwestern on the Norris Center’s East Lawn, Sound Works Productions, Inc. of Frankfort, Ill. was once again tapped to provide audio production. This year, the sound company provided five NEXO GEO S12’s flown, two RS18’s Ray Subs per side ground stacked with two NEXO PS10s speakers used for front fills, all driven with their NEXO NX4x4 amp rack. A Yamaha M7CL was used at front of house with an LS9 at monitors. The Deadly Gentleman from Boston headlined, followed by Sunnyside Up, and Todd Kessler.

ACIR Professional Celebrates Moms at Annual Music Fest

Mays Landing, N.J.—Held Saturday, May 10th in celebration of Mother’s Day, the annual Mother’s Day Festival took place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ and for the third year, ACIR Professional (Mays Landing, NJ) provided audio production services for the 14,500 attendees. This year’s line up included Charlie Wilson, Gladys Knight, and Heads of State featuring Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill. The Mother’s Day Music Fest is always the biggest holiday event at the newly renovated, historic Boardwalk Hall, drawing sell-out crowds.

ACIR provided two Yamaha PM5Ds digital audio consoles, one at front of house and one at monitors. The main PA consisted of 16 d&b J8s, four J12s, 16 B2 subs, and D12 amplifiers. The monitor system included 12 d&B Q1s used for side fills along with Q subs, ACIR 115 wedges, and 12 Yamaha T3N amplifiers.

“The system sounded incredible,” states John Grasso, ACIR Professional co-owner who functioned as front of house engineer. The changeover provided festival-like challenges so we treated it as a festival style in that we had three changeovers with only 10 minutes in between to re-set. This was accomplished by great pre-planning on the part of our crew.” In addition to Grasso, the ACIR crew included Dave Lefko, ME; Bobby Harper, systems engineer; Mike Nugent, systems tech; and Dominick Friia as crew chief. APG Electric Builds State-of-the-Art Conference Room for New Engineering Division Using a Symetrix SymNet Radius AEC Processor

CLEARWATER, FLORIDA – MAY 2014: Based in Clearwater, Florida and founded in 1984, APG Electric has grown from its humble beginnings into one of the Sunshine State’s leading contractors, with 250+ employees and annual sales in excess of $40 million. As the industry has advanced, APG has added in-house expertise that it formerly subcontracted, including an Audio/Visual division that joined the firm two years ago. As part of that process, APG Electric recently added a new engineering department and a new 22-room extension to house it. Included within the new office space is a state-of-the-art conference room, which will serve as a showcase for clients who are considering their conference room options and as a means to discuss and approve changes between the office-based and the field-based staff. “Our goal was to build in the latest and greatest technology,” said James Wagoner, technology programmer at APG Electric. “We wanted to include all of the features that our clients might like to include so that they can make intelligent choices about what they want. “The conference room really has two purposes,” said Larry Stephen, technology account manager at APG Electric. “First, we want to make our clients aware of the technology solutions that are available to support their communication needs. Including high-quality Symetrix audio processing is part of that. Second, we want to close the loop between on-site decisions and the approval they require from office-based staff. Formerly, this required driving back to the office, holding a meeting, marking up documents, getting approvals, and then driving back to the client and/or the site. With the conferencing system, those decisions, mark-ups, and approvals can all be made in real-time, with the client present. We can transfer files, print in the field, and have everybody sign off on a decision as it’s made. The conferencing features of this room save hours and days. It simplifies logistics.”

The Symetrix SymNet Radius AEC includes eight AEC (acoustic echo cancellation) inputs, four auxiliary inputs, eight outputs, and an expansion slot for any SymNet I/O card. Critically, it includes sophisticated AEC and related processing algorithms that deliver crystal clear audio to both sides of a remote conversation. The SymNet Radius AEC is easily expandable and networkable using the Dante Network protocol over Ethernet. An AMX DVX system controls all of the conferencing room’s functionality, including calls, video, audio, and lighting. Two Teamboard 90-inch interactive whiteboard also serve as projection screens for Panasonic short-throw projectors. Video is handled by a LifeSize ICON system using its UVC platform. The conference table includes pop-up boxes for connectivity and a collection of Shure boundary microphones for clear capture of discussions in the room. ElectroVoice Evid in-ceiling speakers provide output.

RELIABLE, SPACE-SAVING ASHLY AMPLIFIERS DELIVER AT LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL

O’FALLON, MISSOURI – MAY 2014: Located forty miles west of St. Louis, St. Charles County is the fastest growing county in Missouri and ranks among the fastest growing counties in the nation. The Wentzville School District is responsible for public education in the area, and with space in its two high schools reaching maximum capacity, the district drafted plans to build a third high school. Now finished, Liberty High School has reliable technology in the classroom, sports facilities, and for extracurricular activities, including a comprehensive sound system that uses space-saving and dependable multi-channel Ashly amplifiers.

St. Louis-based McClure Engineering designed Liberty High School’s sound and A/V systems, and local A/V integrator TSI Global installed it. The system includes a paging service for the common areas of the school, along with more muscular systems for music playback in the gym and on the football field. Modest Biamp DSP and Crestron control systems provide minimal processing and intuitive user control. The real challenge at Liberty High School was ensuring that the system would operate uninterrupted, day-in and day-out. Because space was at a premium, Dave Bick, McClure’s acoustical and systems engineer specified Ashly ne-Series multi-channel amplifiers to power Renkus-Heinz loudspeakers.

In just twelve total rack spaces, the Liberty High School sound system fits thirty amplifier channels: three 8-channel Ashly ne8250s and three 2-channel Ashly ne2400s. “Ashly is always my go-to amp,” said Bick. “Ashly amps are quiet and dependable. Out-of-box failures are extremely limited. The power delivery and options are also very flexible, with 8-ohm and 70-volt variants available in a range of channel counts and power outputs. Despite that, they’re very cost competitive, and the service I get from Ashly is excellent. Due to the fast pace at which products can change or be updated in the A/V industry, I often like to verify things before I commit to them in a design, for which I need a quick, company confirmation. 27 Years Of MerleFest Support: SE Systems Relies On Yamaha and NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Held the last weekend of April in Wilkesboro, N.C., this year’s MerleFest included over 125 artists with area roots such as Alan Jackson and Merle Haggard. The Festival is named for famed guitarist the late Doc Watson’s, after his late son, Merle, also a gifted musician. For 27 years, SE Systems of Greensboro, N.C. has provided audio production for MerleFest, and supporting their efforts this year, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. provided four CL5 digital audio consoles to add to the inventory, which already included a lot of Yamaha-NEXO gear.

Two Yamaha CL5s were used for front of house and monitors at both the Americana Stage and the Hillside Stage. “All worked flawless and sounded great,” states Bryan Smith of SE Systems. “At the Walker Center and the Chris Austin Stage, we used four Yamaha PM5D’s at FOH and Monitors. At the Creekside Stage, we used our NEXO GEO D sound system with GEO Subs. On the main Watson Stage, SE Systems provided NEXO 45-N monitors with NEXO NXAMP 4×4 power amps. In the video/recording trailer, a Yamaha O1V 96i Digital Mixing Console was used to route to the DVR’s and converters.”

“This year, a new stage was added to our production, Smith says. It was a small courtyard style stage called The Plaza used for smaller, local acts. We only needed to cover audio in a small area, so we decided to use eight Yamaha DSR 112’s active speakers, four for mains and four for monitors. No subs were required for this stage. The DSR system sounded awesome and it projected just like we expected; the bass was strong, but not overpowering, and a perfect match for this stage.”

“The Yamaha CL5 is a great-sounding, and versatile console that was perfect for use on the Americana Stage at MerleFest 2014, states Melissa Joplin Higley, who mixed front of house. The console, Dante networking and Rio input/output boxes performed consistently. I found the CL5 to offer more flexibility and horsepower, and the Premium Rack Effects are a tremendous advantage.”

Higley said she used much of the CL5’s onboard processing. “I particularly enjoyed the Custom Fader Banks, especially since we used a festival patch; it was great to have each band’s input list consolidated on one page for easy access to channels, and we were able to quickly and easily adapt to many different scenarios, including hosting guest engineers, patching artist stage snakes into our Rio’s, running ears from FOH, etc.”

Jeff Neubauer mixed monitors at the Hillside Stage using a CL5. “I enjoyed the custom page feature that allowed me to just choose the channels that we were using out of the Festival page for each act. The ease of Dante to route audio between consoles was also a nice feature, and I also liked the ability to recall parts and pieces of show files.”

THE BOX MIXES IN NORWEGIAN HOME STUDIOS THROUGH KAN LYD

SKIEN, NORWAY: Operating out of the home of sound engineer Kjetil Arvesen Nesheim, Kan Lyd is a growing professional project studio for mixing and overdubs. While recording and mixing full productions, Kjetil often travels with his studio gear to record throughout multiple locations. To create the sounds of a big studio through smaller recording spaces, Kan Lyd has commissioned API’s THE BOX console to accommodate the needs of recording artist clients with worldwide audiences.

Kjetil had dreamed of owning a high-end console for years, and was inspired to make an API purchase after listening to vintage American vinyl recordings. He specifically cited Fleetwood Mac’s album Rumors, which was recorded through an API console in 1977. Kjetil contacted API’s Norwegian distributor Prolyd to find a system that would integrate seamlessly with the rest of his gear, and fit the needs of Kan Lyd.

“As soon as I saw the ad for THE BOX, I knew it was the right console for me,” recalls Kjetil. “After I started using it, my mixing became faster and easier, and made my mixes sound more three-dimensional. All instruments blend together perfectly. It sounds bigger, wider, and clearer all at the same time.” Kjetil also appreciates the versatility of THE BOX, and it’s optimization for the digital era. “The idea of having twenty channels of summing in mix-down, built-in preamps, EQs and compressors was very intriguing.”

For mixing purposes, Kjetil had two additional 550B EQs installed. “The first four channels of THE BOX are dedicated to drums: a 550A for kick and snare, and a 550B for toms. I’ve got the compressor strapped to the mix bus at all times. Doing it this way gives me the best of two worlds. It sounds more expensive now.”

On top of working on a voiceover project for a digital guide, the latest album for Christian rock musician Arvid Pettersen is being mixed at Kan Lyd. Kjetil comments that THE BOX has improved his work flow in comparison to his past recording projects. “This is my first experience with API gear, and I love it.”

ASHLY GEAR SCORES AT FINLAND HOCKEY ARENA

HEINOLA, FINLAND: Although the hockey arena in Heinola, Finland seats 1,600, attendance commonly swells to nearly 3,000 as hockey fans crowd through its doors. Until recently, however, fans strained to hear announcements and cringed at the sound of anemic music coming from the arena’s aged ceiling speakers. That all changed when Finnish A/V integration firm Noretron Communication Ltd. replaced the system with full-fidelity FBT loudspeakers and Ashly Audio processing, amplification, and user control. Shortly after the overhaul, Heinola hosted the Women’s Hockey World Championship to rave reviews.

“The previous system was very old and functioning poorly,” said Timo Kunnas, owner of Noretron Communication Ltd. “Using an Ashly back-end and FBT Shadow loudspeakers, we composed a plan that would give them the control and performance they desperately needed. Part of the challenge was meeting their budget and yet still providing excellent coverage in an acoustically-poor environment.” Noretron, a distributor for both Ashly and FBT in Finland, designed the system, installed the rack, and performed the system tuning at commissioning. Local electrical installation firm Electrowise Ltd. handled all of the cabling and the loudspeaker installation.

“Ashly builds reliable and great-sounding gear and sells it at a price that is very competitive,” said Kunnas. “The Ashly ne24.24M modular processor, Ashly KLR-Series amplifiers, and RD-8C remote fader control would give the arena everything they needed. And for us, it’s all very easy to set up and program.”

Because it has a modular I/O count, Kunnas was able to order an Ashly ne24.24M with twelve inputs and eight outputs to accommodate four microphones, two stereo RCA input jacks, a radio output, and a CD player output. The eight outputs feed four dual-channel Ashly KLR-3200 amplifiers, which in turn power nine FBT Shadow loudspeakers, four for the central cluster and five for delays. User control consists of three redundant Ashly RD-8C remote fader panels that provide individual volume control of each input, plus overall volume control. The three redundant locations allow user control from anywhere that staff may need to make adjustments.

“The client is very happy with the sound quality, speech intelligibility, and ease of use, all thanks to Ashly,” concluded Kunnas.

JOHNSON AUDIO WORKS SUCCESS IS BASED ON QUALITY: DANLEY SOUND LABS SPEAKERS AND SUBS HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN

COMER, GEORGIA: Bill Johnson knows live sound. Before assuming the roles of full-time technical director and chief audio engineer for the massive touring Kenneth Copeland Ministries, where he served for fourteen years, Johnson cut his teeth mixing for acts such as Concrete Blonde, the Dave Matthews Band, Ice T, and Widespread Panic. In 2000, Johnson started his own company, Johnson Audio Works, to marshal that extensive experience for the benefit of clients with small- to mid-sized live events. Recently, Johnson upgraded his rig to Danley Sound Labs, his newfound favorite loudspeakers and subwoofers. Now, Johnson graces clients with improved fidelity and impact delivered by a pair of lightweight but hugely efficient Danley SM-80 full-range loudspeakers and a pair of powerful Danley TH-118 subwoofers.

Most of Johnson’s clients are ministries, government, and community organizations, with a few upscale weddings thrown in for good measure; and three-quarters of the content he is responsible for is spoken word. His audience sizes typically range between 300 and 700 people. After recently relocating from Texas to Georgia, Johnson has developed a closer relationship with the engineers at Georgia-based Danley Sound Labs. “Of course, I was aware of Danley Sound Labs and its reputation – the pro audio industry isn’t so big,” he said. “But the first time I actually heard Danley products, I was hooked.” Part of Johnson’s success is his commitment not just to sound quality, but to the system’s overall appearance and its fine scale details. “I aim for installation quality for temporary events,” he said.

The Northside Jam is an annual event put on by Rick Nunez Ministries in Fort Worth, Texas and serves as an excellent example of the power of Johnson’s new portable Danley system. Last year, Howard Scott, former band leader of the 1970s act, War, headlined and drew 1,500 people to Marine Park. “The guy I hired to run FOH couldn’t believe I was seriously going to cover the event with just two Danley SM-80s for full-range,” Johnson said. “He could understand the two Danley BC-415 subwoofers, which I had on loan from Ivan [Beaver, Danley’s chief engineer]. But I walked in with the two SM-80s, one on each arm. They just don’t look capable of delivering the necessary SPLs. He expressed his concern but totally changed his tune after sound check. Not only were the SM-80s plenty loud enough, the sound quality was outstanding. He said it felt like mixing on studio monitors! That was at 110 feet from the stage, outdoors! I walked back 350 feet and the sound was still natural and balanced. Danley’s high-end output is notable and makes the SM-80 pleasant and effective for both near- and far-field applications.”

He continued, “In my world, it’s hard to find a one-box-fits-all solution, but the SM-80 is it. Not only is the sound quality excellent, the size greatly simplifies my set up time. That’s critical, because the margin on live events is small. I’m able to charge the competition’s rates, but where they have a four or five hour bump in, I’m able to get the job done in just two. Moreover, the Danley system tunes up with almost no adjustment, so I’m able to quickly move on to making things look nice and tending to the client’s requests. I think part of Danley’s success is the fact that everyone in the company has lived and breathed in the live and installed sound industries before. It’s more than just the sound.”

SYMETRIX LAUNCHES SYMNET COMPOSER SOFTWARE VERSION 2.0

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON: Symetrix announces a new release of its SymNet Composer open architecture design software for Edge and Radius DanteTM network audio DSPs. In addition to a host of time-saving workflow enhancements, Composer 2.0 natively integrates select Dante third-party hardware supporting the discovery, signal routing, and other aspects of AtteroTech unDIO2x2 and unDX2IO and Stewart Audio AV25-2 and NetAV 2×2 devices. Composer 2.0 is the only programming environment needed to build a Dante networked system from start to finish, simplifying and speeding initial design, revisions, and troubleshooting.

Trent Wagner, senior product manager at Symetrix, noted, “I’m very excited to launch this version of SymNet Composer. To my knowledge, Composer 2.0 is the first full integration of third-party Dante devices in our industry. Contractors can now manage an entire Dante-based system from end-to-end (remote wall box I/O, to DSP, to power amps) using only SymNet Composer 2.0 with select products from AtteroTech, Stewart Audio, and Symetrix.”

In addition to third-party Dante device integration, Composer 2.0 offers a number of workflow enhancements. Remote control protocol can be accessed via TCP/IP and TCP/IP string output modules, simplifying integration with control devices and increasing the number of compatible control systems (e.g. projectors). Module input and output names can be automatically propagated to downstream modules, speeding and standardizing the labeling process, and presets can now be created and edited without going off-line. In addition to the 600+ DSP modules already within the Edge and Radius system, a new Transient Suppressor DSP module reduces random transient noise (e.g. pen tapping, silverware clanking) for clearer conference audio. Furthermore, a new “Trace Signal Path Forward” feature now traces through all Dante transmitters and receivers that significantly reduces the time required to understand, follow, and troubleshoot signal flows within large systems.
