DANLEY LOUDSPEAKERS REMEDY NEIGHBORHOOD NOISE COMPLAINTS AT ATLANTA’S 24/7 IHOP CHURCH

ATLANTA, GEORGIA – JANUARY 2013: IHOP Atlanta is a 24/7 church that spans the time between its frequent services with continuous prayer meetings, a fact that lends sincerity to its full name: International House of Prayer Atlanta. In the year that followed after its October 2004 founding, IHOP rapidly transitioned to the 24/7 cycle, and the prayer meeting that convened on February 12, 2006 is still going without interruption! However, noise complaints from neighbors, engendered primarily by the high-energy rock bands that play a few times a week, threatened the church’s M.O. To correct the problem, IHOP Atlanta hired Pensacola-based A/V integration firm Soundscapes. Now, Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers, which have tremendous pattern control even at low frequencies, focus energy on the congregants and away from the walls. As a result, the “listen-to-leak” ratio is greatly improved, and the church is enjoying Danley’s clean, transparent sound as a bonus.

“Danley’s pattern control is the key to this installation,” said Langston Holland, owner and chief designer with Soundscapes. “I flew three rows of three Danley SH-100s. The patterns hit the sidewalls at about four feet, which puts church members in the coverage as they walk the aisles praying, but deflects excess energy down to the carpeted floor. Moreover, the coverage patterns from each row just kiss the patterns of the rows before or after, so you primarily hear sound from a single loudspeaker, no matter where you are.” To make that work, the first row is facing almost straight down, the last row is at 45 degrees, and the middle row is intermediate. Holland hung them as low as possible without threatening sight lines, thereby increasing perceived SPLs according to the inverse square law.

Because music is such an important component of IHOP Atlanta’s services and prayer meetings, Holland avoided “over-delaying” the middle and rear speakers, a trick that helps locate sounds to the stage via the precedence effect but that also tends to smear them out, which is most noticeable on staccato elements like rim shots. Instead, each row of Danley SH-100s is delayed per its actual distance from the stage. A Peavey Media Matrix delivers the processing, including a 95Hz crossover for the church’s existing subwoofer array. Three new QSC amplifiers join three existing QSC amplifiers to power the system.

To add excitement and dimension to their mixes, Holland installed the new Danley SH-100s with stereo output. But to avoid unintended consequences of operator error, he blended the center loudspeaker so that everybody gets at least some left and right coverage. “They’re grinning ear to ear,” he reported. “They’ve never actually heard their stereo effects before, and now they’re hearing delays ping back and forth and the subtle tails of reverbs. With the old system, their console was a total mess of radical EQ adjustments, but with the Danley speakers, everything is basically flat. The few minor adjustments are for aesthetics and impact, not to fix problems.”

The new Danley system also gives IHOP Atlanta more clean headroom than it had previously. “That was initially a problem,” Holland said. “It sounded so good that they didn’t realize they were pushing louder than ever!” He inserted some limiting to curb their exuberance. Measurements taken at the neighbor’s house before and after the new Danley system was installed demonstrate that everything above the subwoofers is completely fixed and there is no perceptible or measureable energy there. “The band runs 104dB SPL C-Slow for their Thursday night youth services, and it’s pristine in the auditorium,” said Holland. “Inside the neighbor’s house it measures 50dB SPL unweighted at about 60Hz for about four minutes before and after the preaching, which is the loudest portion of their set.”

ASHLY PROCESSING AND AMPLIFIERS JOIN DANLEY LOUDSPEAKERS AND SUBWOOFERS AT HOPE UNITED METHODIST

TRINITY, FLORIDA – JANUARY 2013: Like many churches, Hope United Methodist Church in Trinity, Florida limped along for many years with an aging sound reinforcement system. As components died, well-intentioned church members replaced them with purchases from the music shop, and things slowly drifted toward poor intelligibility and dissatisfying musical impact. The straw that broke the camel’s back was a series of channel failures on the old analog FOH mixer. They could no longer deal with all of their inputs, never mind the quality of everything downstream from the mixer! Hope United hired Christian Sound Installations (CSI) to start from scratch, and the integrator designed and installed a first-rate sound system that includes Ashly Audio processing and amplification and Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers, subwoofers, and stage monitors.

“Like most mid-sized churches in the current economic climate, Hope United needed to stick to a strict budget,” said Paul Garner, CSI’s owner and chief designer. “Of course, it’s my job to bring the system in at or under budget, but I’m not willing to do that by sacrificing quality, performance, or reliability. Because ultimately, the work reflects on CSI, and no one makes allowances for the budgetary constraints we were working under. They either hear a good system, or they hear a bad system.” Part of CSI’s cost-saving plan for the 450-seat sanctuary was to forgo the acoustical treatments that the church thought was necessary to increase intelligibility. With conventional loudspeakers, they would have been correct, but by using the exceptionally tight pattern control of Danley loudspeakers, Garner was able to keep energy off the walls.

Everything in Hope United’s sound reinforcement system is new. The stage has six Sennheiser G3 wireless microphone systems, a ClearSonic drum shield, and an Aviom personal monitoring system for the drummer. A cutting edge Allen & Heath GLD-series digital console gives the operator the flexibility of a modern digital system with the intuitive feel of a classic analog console. CSI recessed the equipment rack into the wall adjacent to the mixer, and the back of the rack is accessible from a nearby closet. A Tascam hard drive recorder lets the church easily record all of the sermons for easy uploading to the church website.

An Ashly Protea 3.6SP processor provides all input and output conditioning for the new sound system. “I’ve had great success with the entire Ashly processor line,” said Garner. “The bang for the buck I get with the 3.6SP and 4.8SP can’t be beat. For a straightforward installation, they have everything I need, without heaps of stuff I don’t need. Importantly, the audio path and algorithms are clean and natural sounding.” In addition to providing crossovers, limiting, and overall EQ, Garner used the Ashly 3.6SP to signal align the house system with the stage monitors.

Two Danley SH-100s are arrayed roughly twelve feet off the center of the church angled slightly down and out, with a single Danley TH-212 subwoofer covering all of the seats. Two Danley SM-100M low-profile loudspeakers serve as ultra-high-fidelity stage monitors. With an EASE model, Garner determined that the Danley pattern control would yield the most even coverage of all the viable alternatives, but hearing a Danley system sealed the deal. “I brought the client down to my church, where we run a Danley system,” said Garner. “The clarity and impact is so obviously beyond what a conventional system can deliver. They were convinced.”

Three Ashly KLR-2000 amplifiers power the Danley boxes. “The Ashly KLR-Series sounds excellent and has proven to be perfectly reliable,” said Garner. “We’ve put a lot of them in and had zero failures, zero callbacks, and no issues whatsoever. That means a lot in today’s market. It’s nice to deal with companies like Ashly and Danley that recognize that there’s still something to be said for quality while still working hard to keep costs in line.”

Christian Artist FOH Engineer Relies on new Yamaha CL5 Digital Console

BUENA PARK, Calif.–Known for front of house mixing dozens of Christian artists, front of house engineer, Harold Rubens, has found much success using the new Yamaha CL5 Digital Audio Console on several tours in 2012 and early 2013. “CTS Audio (Franklin, Tenn.) has been my preferred audio provider,” states Rubens “They provide us with racks and stacks and any additional audio support we need. For the shows I’m doing now the CL I’m using is owned by musician, Brandon Heath, who purchased the console through CTS for his “Blue Mountain” Tour.” Once I mixed on the CL5 for Brandon’s national tour, I liked it so much that I turned right around and took the same console out to mix the Andrew Peterson “Behold The Lamb of God” Christmas tour.”

“The networking capabilities of the CL Series using Dante makes everything easier,” Rubens said. “On the “Blue Mountain” Tour, it was easy to just plug in a computer and instantly record and playback all 64 tracks for both virtual sound check and recording. On Andrew Peterson’s tour, we were touring with one CL5, but with two sold-out shows at the Ryman, we added a second CL5 to accommodate additional instruments and guest performers. The console’s networking made it really easy to add the second CL5 and also be able to sound check everything using the playback from the previous show.”

“I think that the CL5 sounds incredible,” adds Rubens. “It has exceeded any expectation I had for the console. I’ve used Yamaha digital consoles extensively at one point or another on tours and/or installs, and I was anxious to see how the CL5 was going to perform. I knew about the long list of new features, but I still wondered how it was going to sound. Needless to say, I was very impressed which is why I recommended that Brandon buy one along with two Rio3224-D boxes to use as part of his own touring system.”

Andrew Peterson’s “Behold The Lamb Of God” show has been touring for 13 years. Each year, the tour makes a stop at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville which production support from CTS. “The show is a complicated concert to mix,” says Rubens. “There is a seven-piece string section, drums, percussion, bass, lap steel, dobro, mandolin, ukele, electric guitars, acoustic guitars, piano, hammer dulcimer, lap dulcimer, accordion, along with six vocalists who take lead on different songs.” The concert featured special appearances by Steven Curtis Chapman, Stuart Duncan, Jeff Taylor, Buddy Green, Sierra Hull and members of Union Station (Allison Krause’s band).”

“When Harold came into the Ryman with Andrew’s annual Christmas show, it was the first time anyone had brought in a Yamaha CL5,” notes Les Banks, Ryman Auditorium Tech Supervisor. “I had previously attended a demo but had not yet seen one in action. As soon as Harold powered up the CL5 and played the previous evening’s show (using Virtual Soundcheck), I instantly commented on how clear the console sounded. The top end was clear and the bottom was tight…no smoke and mirrors here; great mic pre’s and plug-ins. As the Ryman’s audio supervisor, I am in the unique position to audition every type of console on the planet through the same PA, and this console rocks! For its price and size, the CL is jammed-packed with performance and features. It gets all A’s on my report card!”

Rubens said that while out with Heath, things were sounding so good that opener, Matt Maher, decided to release a live project using the tracks acquired during the tour from the Nuendo Live function of the Yamaha CL. “Yamaha digital consoles all have different feature sets that are not always available on other Yamaha consoles; i.e. the USB recorder on the LS9, the touch screen on the M7CL, and the direct to matrix send on inputs on M7s and 5Ds.The CL is a culmination of all those features plus a whole lot more, and to top it all, it sounds really, really good. This is an amazing package at an incredible price point.”

Hometown Church for Lincoln Brewster Replaces Existing Point ‘N Shoot System with NEXO GEO S12 Line Array

BUENA PARK, Calif.—The Bayside Church in Roseville, California, known to many as the home to house of worship leader and influential musician, Lincoln Brewster, recently upgraded its speaker system for their 2,300-seat main campus location with a NEXO GEO S12 line array, RS18′s, and NXAmps. Bayside Church has a total of four locations, and over 12,000 members of the congregation attend worship services on any given weekend. Bayside Church and Brewster, who frequently leads worship at the church when not on tour, have considerable influence on the Christian scene. “Lincoln was very much involved in our decision to replace our existing d&b system with the NEXO system,” states Lee Fields, Senior Audio Director for all audio systems and audio staff across the campuses. “It was really a joint effort; Lincoln trusts me, but at the same time, I don’t underestimate his talents either. He is an incredible audio engineer in his own right. After all, he has mixed most of his own records.” The NEXO system was purchased through Special Event Services (SES), Sacramento.

Fields said that the core of the change in line array systems was that the church seating had changed drastically. “The d&b system was a point and shoot system that mainly covered the floor (about 900 seats), and large delay boxes covered the remaining 1,000ish seats in the bleacher sections. The new seating arrangement is still 900 on the floor and another 1,400 or so in new stadium-style seats, adding in another 500 new seating locations. With the previous system, over half of the seating area would have been in coverage by delay speakers—not ideal with the worship experience we are trying to create. The NEXO line array has allowed us to cover the room much better from a single source, and every seat sounds amazing and surprisingly similar to the next.” On a typical weekend, Bayside’s worship band consists of 6-7 contemporary worship musicians.

The second reason for the change out the system was a bit more philosophical Fields notes. “Lincoln and I both have been to hundreds of churches and have seen a variety of PA systems: PAs that rival stadium touring rigs, PAs way too small for big rooms, PAs way too big for small rooms, PAs that sound great and are just right for a church, and PAs that cost way too much money for a church to be spending money on. With all that said, we finally found a product that far exceeds our needs sonically and that is also a perfect representation of being a good steward when it comes to our church’s money. This is the biggest win for us on a personal level, knowing that we didn’t have to spend zillions of dollars on a system. We are astonished by the performance of the GEO S12 rig/ It feels great knowing our church can go about the duty of assisting people with the money we saved by choosing the product we did, and we didn’t sacrifice anything, rather, we gained everything.”

Fields has been a touring engineer for close to ten years and says he’s literally seen all of the various line arrays available. “I kept running across the GEO S12 at medium size festivals, at conferences, and other events. Every time I got my hands on them, I loved them! A huge bonus is how supportive the team at Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems has been. In Time for Holiday Services, Church Gives Congregation the Gift of Enhanced Sound with Yamaha CL5

BUENA PARK, Calif.—This year’s holiday services at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Stafford, Virginia will be enhanced significantly with the addition of a new Yamaha CL5 digital console. The 500-seat traditional and contemporary style-worship sanctuary purchased the new console along with two Yamaha RIO input/output racks from Sound Productions in Irving, Texas.

“Our decision to replace our existing analog console, was based on three major factors,” states James Mills, Director of Technology. “It had to be a digital console since we have a tight turn-around of 15 minutes between services, and attempting to use an analog board to get accurate sound levels at each service would be very difficult. The console had to physically fit in a tight space. And, as a church, we wanted to spend our money as wisely as possible, so looking at the long-term picture, it made sense to go with the CL5 knowing there would be plenty of room for growth.”

Mills said church staff and volunteers actually had to completely remove their old sound/video booth and rebuild it to fit the new console. Then he and Dave Bryant, the Director of Contemporary Music re-installed the booth’s contents including the new CL5. “I love the ease of setup and punch and clarity the CL5 brings to our sanctuary,” notes Bryant. “Since the band changes almost every week, it’s nice having such a fast, easy way to make changes to the setup, EQ and DCAs. This certainly has set us up for the future, and I’m really excited about that.”

“The console has a lot of nice features that make it friendlier to our volunteer-operator environment, including channel labeling and plenty of room for custom banks,” adds Mills. While he never had direct experience with Dante before the CL5, Mills was familiar with what it could provide in terms of audio networking and features like being able to tap into the network for multi-track recording. “Dante gave us the assurance that this was the console that would take us well into the future.”

Ebenezer UMC’s sanctuary has an average attendance on a weekend of about 1,200 across five services. There are two traditional services, one with a four to six person vocal group and the other with a 30-voice choir. The other three services are contemporary in style with multiple musicians and vocalists.

“The Yamaha CL5 sounds great!” Mills said. “With no other audio changes to our system, the difference in sound from our old analog console to the CL5 is huge. From the pastors to the choir and band, the new console has brought to us a new standard of clarity and natural sound we had not heard in our sanctuary before. The choice of the CL5 has given us the confidence that no matter what happens next, we have a console that will be able to handle it.”

Optionally, the Ceiling Box family can be equipped with a projector pole mount adapter so that the projector can mount directly to the ceiling box and cables can disappear through the pole.

The newest member of the CORE family is the Top Shelf wall mounted rack. Top Shelf mounts to a wall just below the ceiling in installations without a drop ceiling or where space above the drop ceiling is limited. The Top Shelf provides four rack units of mounting space and the plastic cover allows RF and WiFi signals to pass unobstructed between the equipment and the room.

Community ENTASYS Provides the Audio Solution for the Heilig Hart Church

Boom, Belgium – December 2012….. The Heilig Hart (Sacred Heart) church in Boom, just South of Antwerp in Belgium, has recently had a new Community audio system installed by communication and integration specialist, Zelzate-based Tevean nv.

With capacity for up to 700 people and contemporary architecture, the large open space required good pattern control loudspeakers to avoid the reflective surfaces in the highly reverberant environment. Community ENTASYS three-way, full-range, column-line-array systems were chosen for their ideal wide horizontal and extremely narrow vertical dispersion. As the system is used for music and small concerts, in addition to its prime function of speech reinforcement, compact dual 12-inch Community VLF212 subwoofers were incorporated to extend the low frequency and add powerful bass performance.

Providing flexibility with simple control, Tevean installed a Symetrix Solus 8 open architecture 8×8 DSP with control via a Symetrix ARC-2e menu-driven wall panel remote. A variety of Clockaudio and MIPRO ACT-5 wireless microphones meet the fixed and portable requirements of the church.

Burlington, MA – December 13, 2012 – Catalyst AV (www.catalystav.com), a new nationwide distribution network comprised of 11 independent distributors that serve the residential and professional AV channels in the US, today announced its formation.

Operating from 16 locations across the US, the Catalyst AV network serves more than 10,000 professional integration companies. According to board member Mike Hench the group is committed to maintaining sustained inventory levels to assure next-day (and where applicable same-day) delivery in the continental U.S.

The members of Catalyst AV share a common vision as to how better serve the integrator and the manufacturer. This includes fostering personal relationships through one-on-one selling and servicing, offering project consultation and design, and providing top-tier technical support.

The group will use its 16 locations to host manufacturer training events and product showcases. Special emphasis will be placed on technologies that frequently cause installation compatibility issues such as networking, media distribution and home control.
