SYMETRIX SOLUS 8 AND JUPITER 4 DELIVER THE MESSAGE AT SOUTHEAST ASIA BIBLE SEMINARY

MALANG, INDONESIA – DECEMBER 2012: The Southeast Asia Bible Seminary (SEABS) instructs students from around Indonesia and other nearby countries from its campus in Malang, East Java. It offers several degrees, including a Bachelor of Divinity, multiple masters degrees, and a Doctor of Ministry. To match the needs of an expanding student body, SEABS has added new buildings and infrastructure to its facilities. Most recently, the school added a 1,600-seat auditorium and a 150-seat recital hall, both of which required high-impact sound reinforcement. A/V integration firm PT Gracia Auvindo of Jakarta designed and installed those systems using the Symetrix Solus 8 open-architecture processor and the Symetrix Jupiter 4 fixed-architecture processor, both of which offered cost-effective performance perfectly tailored to the needs of the school.

“The school officials asked for a very clear and intelligible sound reinforcement system,” said T.S. Phan, engineer with PT Gracia Auvindo. “They wanted excellent dispersion and coverage for all of the seats in both venues.” The auditorium will be used for very large services (an existing sanctuary hosts SEABS’ regular services) and for other large events, such as graduation ceremonies. In contrast, the new recital hall will be used for small services, seminars, and overflow from the auditorium.

A new Midas mixing console serves as the input and control hub in the auditorium. On-stage microphones, piano, and band instruments provide the bulk of the input material. The console sends signal directly to a Coda Audio house PA via CAMCO amplifiers. However, console output is also distributed to the basement, the first floor public areas, and the second floor by way of the Symetrix Solus 8 processor. For the distributed system, QSC amplifiers provide power to Ecler ceiling-mounted loudspeakers. The Symetrix Solus 8 also provides output for Coda Audio side-fill, out-fill, front-fill, and backfill loudspeakers.

“The Symetrix Solus 8 was a cost-effective choice,” said Phan. “It not only gave us the high-fidelity sound asked for by the client, but also gave us open-architecture flexibility to design exactly what was needed. For example, I could insert two channels of feedback fighters on the stage side-fills, where it was needed, without wasting that resource on the other outputs, where it wasn’t needed.”

The recital hall is considerably simpler. Input sources such as stage microphones and a few band instruments feed a small Midas mixer, which in turn feeds a Symetrix Jupiter 4 fixed-architecture processor. From there, CAMCO amplifiers power a Coda Audio loudspeaker system consisting of stereo full-range boxes paired with stereo subwoofers. Phan used a “Sound Reinforcement” app to configure the Symetrix Jupiter 4 with appropriate input/output structure and processing blocks. “The Symetrix Jupiter 4 is a very simple, cost-effective DSP for this type of application,” said Phan. “I just chose an appropriate app using the Symetrix App Finder on the Symetrix webpage, loaded it up on the unit, and made a few parameter adjustments, and it was ready to go!”

ROBUST, AFFORDABLE ASHLY PROCESSORS, AMPLIFIERS, AND NETWORK FADER REMOTE CONTROL REJUVENATE ST. CLEMENT CHURCH

DES PERES, MISSOURI: St. Clement of Rome Catholic Church has served as the spiritual bedrock of Des Peres, Missouri for over half a century. Today, over 5,000 parishioners call St. Clement home, and over 500 students attend its schools. Like most mid-sized churches, the impact of its services relies on a well-functioning sound reinforcement system to deliver transparent, intelligible spoken word and emotionally compelling music. When St. Clement’s old sound system started failing, it called on local A/V integrator Tech Electronics to install a new system that would provide trouble-free service for years to come. Tech Electronics met that goal with a new headend comprised of an Ashly ne24.24M modular processor, three Ashly KLR 3200 amplifiers, and an Ashly FR-16 network fader remote control.

“The church had last updated its equipment over a dozen years ago,” explained Tony Badamo, systems specialist at Tech Electronics. “They don’t modify their setup very often, so when they do, they want to choose an integrator and equipment that will provide a stable system to carry them far into the future. The auto-mixers in the old system were starting to fail, as were some of the amplifiers.” Badamo wanted to try a complete Ashly system, based on its reputation for reliability and its competitive price point. “The power you get per dollar with Ashly amplifiers is very efficient,” he added. “If you compare it with the other leading amplifier manufacturers out there, you’ll see it’s a big difference.”

All of the loudspeakers – which are arranged as a center cluster with a left-right complement – were in good shape, and Badamo left them in place. Only the rack equipment needed to be replaced. To accommodate the church’s CD player input and its many microphone inputs, he outfitted the modular Ashly ne24.24M processor with twelve analog inputs. Eight outputs handle all of the existing loudspeakers, including a 70-volt system for hallways and other areas outside the sanctuary, as well as a listening assistance system. Badamo easily configured one of the Ashly KLR 3200 amplifier channels to power the 70-volt system. The remaining channels power the house system.

Badamo was careful to give St. Clement Church enough control to meet its needs, but not so much control that curious fingers could wreck the setup. The Ashly FR-16 is a bank of sixteen faders plus a master that communicates with any Ashly processor via a simple network connection. Each fader’s effect is fully customizable, and Badamo gave the church simple volume control of each input, along with master volume control. Because the church was hoping for a “set it and forget it” setup, the Ashly FR-16 resides in the rack. Everything else is off limits. “I love that the volume knobs on the Ashly KLR amplifiers can be locked out,” Badamo said. “Especially in systems like this with multiple outputs, giving the user access to the volume knobs is a recipe for blown-up speakers!”

New Sound System is Music to Sisters’ Ears

Renowned Domed Chapel Gets Major Upgrade

Sinsinawa, WI – November 2012…  Sinsinawa is said to be a Native American term for “rattlesnake,” or “home of the young eagle.” But Sinsinawa Mound, Wisconsin is better known as the home of the Congregation of Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters. Since 1847, more than 3,200 women have ascended the “Hill of Grace” to take their vows as Sinsinawa Dominicans. Today the village is still home to their worldwide headquarters, including more than 600 current and retired sisters of the Order.

In 1964 the campus, with its 1850s-vintage fort, was expanded with the construction of an 800-seat crown chapel, replete with massive 45-foot dome and transept wings. The building’s marble and plaster interior creates an acoustical environment that works magnificently to enhance the Order’s celebrated pipe organ. But as their needs have changed over time, those same acoustics have created a whole new set of challenges.

“It’s a beautiful facility that has always been renowned for its musical acoustics,” explains Scott Wright, President of Platteville, WI-based Lifeline Audio Video Technologies. “But in today’s world they’re using it more and more often for spoken word and piano-vocal recitals, and it simply wasn’t designed for that.”

“It’s a very large room, with a reverb time of more than four seconds,” adds Lifeline VP Mike Mair, “and as they’ve been doing more spoken word and piano-oriented services, vocal intelligibility has become more of an issue.”

To be fair, the room was not completely without sound reinforcement. But the original decades-old speaker system had never been adequate for the space. “The reverb time was markedly longer in the middle of the room, where the dome is higher,” Mair explains, “and as a result many of the sisters were seating themselves around the edges near the transepts, where they could hear a bit better, and leaving the center of the room pretty much empty.”

sinsinawa“They had talked to many contractors over the years in an attempt to find a solution, and everyone wanted to convince them to hang large speaker clusters and treat the room acoustically,” says Wright. “That just wasn’t going to happen. This is not your typical 1000-seat church – it’s a very special, very unique environment. Altering the aesthetics of the place was not open to discussion. It’s a beautiful, majestic space, and there’s simply no way you could hang a cluster of loudspeakers from this ceiling. From a structural perspective, it would have been problematic, to say the least. But beyond that, there’s simply no way they would have allowed it.”

One of the biggest challenges in designing an audio system for the space was the need to retain the room’s reverberant character. Acoustical treatment was simply not an option. “People from all over the world come to play organ recitals in this hall, and they were not willing to compromise the room’s acoustics as an organ recital facility,” says Wright. “But the majority of daily use for the space is really spoken word, and some choral singing with piano and organ. So we needed a very controllable, highly intelligible system that would address the room’s reverb issues without altering its character. The bottom line was, if we were going to achieve any intelligibility in that space at all, we had to control where the sound went.”

Lifeline’s solution was a simple and elegant one – a pair of Renkus-Heinz Iconyx IC24-R digitally steerable array loudspeaker systems. The Iconyx arrays, mounted on either side of the altar, addressed virtually all of the chapel’s long-standing issues.

“We’ve used Iconyx in a number of previous projects, and have always been successful with them,” Wright says. “They are without a doubt our choice for a steerable array, and we feel they are the best one on the market.”

A demo was arranged via Carl Schwartz of rep firm Frequency Sales. “We arranged a demo for about 70 people,” says Wright. “They were definitely skeptical, since they’ve tried so many systems over the years. But we’ve done a few projects with them in the past, and the results have always been successful, so they trusted us.”

“We just plugged a mic directly into the Iconyx, with flat EQ,” says Mair. “The results were remarkable. You could see eyes popping open all over the room. They were just astounded.”

“I got up at the lectern and read a few things, and they still couldn’t believe what they were hearing,” says Wright. “At first, several of the sisters were saying, ‘oh, it’s just because he’s got a very booming, male voice.’ So we had Sister Priscilla Wood get up and do a reading, and they all said, ‘yes! That’s what she sounds like.’ After that, the next question was whether we could we get it installed by Thursday.”

A Biamp Nexia presentation mixer provides microphone inputs for their wireless, pulpit and choir mics. “They’re very happy with the simplicity of the system,” says Mair. “It’s very easy for them to run.”

“They had waited many, many years to find the right solution,” says Wright. “Essentially, they waited until technology caught up with their needs. Finally, with Iconyx, we found a solution that really worked for them. They weren’t looking for a minor improvement; they were looking for a night-and-day difference. And that’s exactly what they got.”

FSR Rallies Behind Home State to Provide Relief for New Jersey Storm Victims

Woodland Park, NJ– FSR, a Passaic County-based manufacturer, has rallied behind fellow New Jerseyans in the wake of Sandy to provide relief for the superstorm’s victims.

Accompanied by a team of FSR volunteers, company president, Jan Sandri arrived at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Highlands, NJ on Friday, November 9 in vehicles packed with food, paper products, cleaning supplies, clothing and checks.

“Highlands is a small town adjacent to Sandy Hook with a permanent population of 5,000,” said Sandri. “The homes are primary residences, not vacation houses. The town was hit with 13.5’ of water, even before the storm surge came through. These people are our neighbors and have lost so much. It’s a very good feeling to be lending a helping hand.”

Sandri noted that Church volunteers helped unload the supplies as dozens of other cars lined up to drop off diapers, food and other urgently needed products.

“While outside I noticed a truck from Florida Power and Light (FPL) and questioned the driver about his trip,” continued Sandri. “He explained that he was from Texas but was using a FPL vehicle because his own hadn’t arrived yet. It’s wonderful to see the cooperation and help pouring into New Jersey.”
