Screen Innovations Creates New In-wall Screen Category

Austin, TX—June 2014—Screen Innovations (SI), the fastest growing technology-based screen manufacturer in the USA—and the undisputed world leader in ambient-light-rejection screen technology—has developed an exciting new in-wall installation option for its FlexGlass™ rear projection screen material.

FlexGlass™ In-wall is a revolutionary new option that integrates a screen into a wall for a flush fit and finish.

FlexGlass™ is the world’s first rollable glass projection screen with curve and custom capabilities ideal for commercial and retail installations. With FlexGlass™ In-wall, the screen is material inserted into a rigid frame at the job site, then mounted in a pre-cut opening. SI provides integrators with a template and step-by-step instructions to cut a precise opening in the wall.

FlexGlass™ Rear-Pro projection screen material is the most innovative breakthrough in rear projection screens in decades. For the first time, a screen has broken the physical barriers that limit all other rear projection screens. It does so by delivering unmatched edge-blend capability, zero hotspotting, almost infinitely variable viewing angle, and dark contrast because of its ability to reject ambient light.

FlexGlass™ is made from the same material as bulletproof glass, and is available in screens up to 9’ high and 99’ wide, allowing the best in flexibility, strength, and performance. It offers the benefits of the best rigid optical glass and panels, and, because it’s semi-rigid, FlexGlass™ can be used in curved configurations ideal for retail, in-window displays, exhibits, houses of worship, board rooms, corporate lobbies, and more. It can also be rolled in long, seamless sheets on 24” diameter cores, eliminating the logistical problems associated with moving rigid glass or Plexiglas sheets into and through buildings, elevators, and small doorways.

Manufacturers Suggested Retail Pricing: starting at $6,278.00 USD

Symetrix Radius 12×8 Dante™ Network DSPs Help Revitalize St. Peter Catholic Church

OMAHA, NEBRASKA – JUNE 2014: The Diocese of Omaha erected St. Peter Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska in 1926, and the church enjoyed many decades at the heart of Omaha’s Catholic community. However, times changed, demographics shifted, and the church didn’t have the funds to keep up with needed maintenance. It fell into disrepair. However, a recent resurgence in attendance inspired by the leadership of Fr. Damien Cook motivated the diocese to fund a major external and internal renovation at St. Peter Catholic Church. Now complete, the renovation, designed and coordinated by Conrad Schmitt Studios of Milwaukee, Wisconsin has won awards and features a new sound reinforcement system anchored by a Symetrix Radius 12×8 Dante network audio DSP system with Symetrix ARC wall panel remote.

“It was a complete overhaul, from the roof to the floors, from the walls to the ceiling, everything is renovated and revitalized,” said Tim Burkhart, senior systems designer with Omaha-based Midwest Sound & Lighting, the firm that installed St. Peter’s new sound reinforcement system. “It’s really stunning. In the process, they knew they would radically alter the room’s acoustics. They wanted to ensure that the new sound system would give them musical impact and intelligibility.”

Milwaukee-based DSH Audio Visions designed the sound system and partnered with Scott Riedel Associates of Milwaukee for acoustic design. David Hosbach, DSH president and principal design consultant concurred with Burkhart, and added, “Father Cook and Music Director Zachary Turner understand that while the music portion of Mass is really important, if worshipers can’t hear the Word clearly the rest of it – the majestic music, the ornate worship space – really doesn’t matter. I take my hat off to them and the St. Peter congregation for allowing the sound design, the room acoustics and the architectural beauty to work together in harmony, so to speak.”

Two Symetrix Radius 12×8 DSPs form the heart of the system. One unit is located at the front of the room, the second unit is located at the back of the room, and they connect via the Dante network. That way, each unit is near to a collection of inputs and appropriate outputs, and because the system integrates completely via Dante, any of those inputs can be sent to any of those outputs. Redundant Dante connections provide a failsafe in case one of the networks goes down – the other network will pick up seamlessly. The Radius units provide sophisticated processing for Crown amplifiers and a Tannoy QFlex 64 steerable line array.

The Radius units are located in a wall rack at the back of the loft and at the main equipment rack in the sacristy at the front of the room. Two remote sets provide user control, with one mounted in the main rack, and the other in the loft in a custom portable box at the organ console. All told, two Symetrix ARC-K1e, five Symetrix ARC-EX4e, and three Symetrix ARC-SW4e wall panel remote control units provide comprehensive, yet intuitive, control of the system. They primarily select active inputs and allow volume adjustment and configuration preset changes. “We use a lot of Symetrix equipment, and we love the hardware, the software, and its bullet-proof reliability,” said Burkhart. “The sound quality is always top-notch, and the Symetrix open-architecture processing is capable of anything we ask of it. Considering how frequently we use Symetrix products, the failure rate is remarkably low. And if something does go wrong, Symetrix makes it right immediately.”

Hosbach commented, “I like the Symetrix SymNet DSPs for the same reasons as Tim. And I’ll add that they are really easy to program, the site files are fast and convenient to move around in and modify on the fly during setup, and the tuning filters are extremely accurate.”

Burkhart concluded, “St. Peter Catholic Church is very happy with the new sound reinforcement system. They are delighted with its sound quality and with its ease of operation.”

ASHLY AUDIO CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF BUILDING GREAT-SOUNDING, COST-EFFECTIVE, AND RELIABLE PRO AUDIO SOLUTIONS

WEBSTER, NEW YORK: Founded by Billy Thompson in 1974 on the wings of a successful live sound company, Ashly Audio has been pioneering innovative products for the pro audio industry for forty years. Although much has changed, such as Ashly’s steady pivot from analog solutions for live sound to digital solutions for installed sound, much has also not changed, and it is this constancy that underlies Ashly success and longevity. Ashly has always delivered great-sounding gear that is highly reliable, easy-to-use, and fairly priced, which is a combination that never goes out of style. Moreover, Ashly has always resolutely stood behind its products and offered its full support to its customers. Ashly continues in this tradition as it builds the next generation of networkable amplifiers, DSPs, and user interfaces.

“Ashly has always had a relatively slow but steady growth trajectory,” explained Mark Wentling, president of Ashly Audio. “Many similar companies started out around the same time as Ashly Audio but have since closed their doors or been absorbed into other companies to become just another ‘brand.’ People have moved on and factories have been shuttered or moved overseas. Our approach has always been to remain steady, dependable, and maybe a little conservative, and that contributed to the forty strong years that we’re now celebrating. Indeed, the Ashly philosophy reflects back on our employees… many of the people still on the payroll in engineering, administration, and manufacturing were there when the company was just starting up!”

Those were the days when Billy Thompson was still playing the role of mad scientist at a lab bench overrun with oscilloscopes, custom-made real-time analyzers, and voltmeters. The smell of solder hung thick in the air. Among many other gems, Thompson used that charismatic setup to design Ashly’s 1970s-era SC-Series of rack-mounted processors, which included classic compressors, equalizers, crossovers, line mixers, mic preamps, and all of the other goodies that today reside inside Ashly’s Protea™ Digital Signal Processing platform. The live sound industry flocked to these and other Ashly products because, for a fair price, they effectively solved real problems and were well-known to reliably endure the stresses of life on the road.

In the 1980s, Thompson pioneered Ashly’s now-legendary MOS-FET amplifiers, which revolutionized the amplifier market by dramatically increasing amplifier power and reliability while minimizing size and cost. Ashly’s MOS-FET amplifiers were among the first to be certified for meeting Lucas-films’ stringent THX movie theater sound systems. Today, Ashly continues in that tradition by delivering high-power, high-fidelity amplifiers in small-footprint, multi-channel configurations that maintain Ashly’s hallmark reliability and value.

“Our relatively small size allows us to be quite nimble and responsive to our customers, whom we deeply value,” said Wentling. “Ashly Audio still operates a full factory in Webster, New York, just outside of Rochester, where we design and manufacture all of our networkable products, including high-power Class-D amplifiers, DSP Matrix processors, and some legacy handmade analog mixers, like the MX-508. In addition, we have responded to market forces by opening Asia-based manufacturing for our KLR-Series amplifiers and some legacy analog products. However, this is just a component of our U.S.-based operations. Indeed, we expanded our U.S. manufacturing plant last year and grew the R&D team. We continue to add to our product line-up in the area of high-performance Class-D amplification, as well as DSP matrix & system processors.”

A development Thompson couldn’t have anticipated without Steve Jobs-like prescience is how quickly the pro audio industry has adopted network technology from the IT industry. Ashly’s nimble in-house engineering team has ensured that the company stays at the leading edge of this development, giving A/V integrators cost-effective options for building Ashly systems and tying them elegantly into the larger lighting and video infrastructures. Ashly’s network-ready amplifiers and processors play nicely on a TCP/IP network right out of the box, and integrators can network digital audio via CobraNet or Dante® (“and AVB when the time is right,” promises Wentling). In addition to networkable hardware user controllers, Ashly offers a popular Ashly Remote iPad app for custom control of its products and will look towards the eventual release of iPhone and Android variants as well. Beyond simply offering these technologies, Ashly’s dedication to customer support ensures that Ashly users are a phone call away from answers and solutions to the myriad questions and challenges that can crop up in complicated networked systems.

“There is an incredible history here,” says Anthony Errigo, director of marketing communications. “People at Ashly are dedicated and have great stories to share. Our employees are proud of this company and brand that they have built together.”

Canvas Church Brings Active Integration into their New Home

Irvine, CA – June 2014…. As the old saying goes, sometimes you have to break away to come back home. The faithful who founded Canvas Church know that story well. The founders of Canvas, a small group of self-described “entrepreneurial misfits,” broke away from Irvine Presbyterian in 2011 to form a different kind of church: a church “for people who don’t like church.”

The original congregation has more than tripled in size since then and recently relocated to a larger home. The new digs are, not surprisingly, a bit unconventional, occupying a warehouse space in a relatively nondescript industrial park. The inside, however, is warm and welcoming, and the cozy sanctuary is outfitted with a powerful audio system centered on the new PreSonus® StudioLive™ AI Active Integration™ line of mixers and loudspeakers.

“We do a sort of post-contemporary service, and we’ve typically got anywhere between four and nine musicians up on the stage,” explains Norman Gordon, the parishioner who specified the system and can typically be found running front-of-house. “It’s a full band: bass, drums, guitars, keyboards, and a few vocalists. There’s a lot of stuff going on.”

Gordon recommended the new PreSonus StudioLive 32.4.2AI console, along with StudioLive 328AI full-range speakers and a StudioLive 18sAI subwoofer as the main front-of-house system. “The AI series really had everything we needed,” he explains. “We had a 24-channel analog console we’d been using, and even though we really didn’t need the extra channels right away, we went for the 32-channel mixer because it was the first console released in the AI line.”

For Gordon, it begins with the sound. “Having been an analog guy most of my life, I really love that warm, English, analog sound. It’s something I wouldn’t have expected with digital. I have to say, though, I was really, really pleasantly surprised at how warm and open the console sounded.”

Of course, the StudioLive’s digital features are also well utilized. “We use the snapshot scene memory for a lot of stuff: mute scenes, mix scenes. It allows us to get to things very quickly. And having all that DSP horsepower, with compression and EQ and everything, really enables us to do a lot of very cool stuff.”

Every service gets recorded, Gordon adds. “We use Capture™ software to record the individual tracks in real time, and then we import them into Studio One® for mixing.”

A pair of StudioLive 328AI Active Integration monitors completes the package, with an 18sAI subwoofer for low-frequency reinforcement. “While we were waiting for the speakers to arrive, we had a couple of different loaner systems in here,” Gordon recounts. “It didn’t sound bad, but when we installed the StudioLive speakers and fired them up for the first time, the difference in clarity was just amazing. Articulation is really, really important to me — the ability to understand both the singing and the spoken word. And the StudioLive monitors sounded great right out of the box. They’ve got a really smooth response.”

Gordon reports that the entire congregation has been happy with the new system. “You know what they say about the soundman — if you don’t get any complaints, it means you’re doing your job.”

Pennsylvania Church Upgrades with Yamaha and NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Morris Light & Sound (Nashville) recently completed an audio upgrade at the King Street Church in Chambersburg, PA consisting of a NEXO GEO S12 line array (five GEO S12s per side and two RS18 Ray Subs flown in the center) along with a Yamaha CL5 digital audio console at front of house, and two Rio 3224-D input/output located in an amp rack behind the stage.

“Given the traditional architecture and diverse worship styles at King Street, we needed to provide a system that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also met performance requirements for the various services at the church, states Danny Rosenbalm, Vice President – Integration, Morris Light & Sound. The NEXO GEOS12s were a great choice for this application as they provide exceptional coverage and strong full range music reproduction, all while keeping the spoken word and vocal clarity of paramount importance.”

With a congregation of approximately 2,000, King Street Church seats 550 in the sanctuary and 725 in the Baker Center, a separate contemporary worship space. Three service styles are held each Sunday: traditional, contemporary, and a blended service. The contemporary and blended services have anywhere from six to ten musicians and vocalists as part of the praise band.

“The tech team had heard the NEXO and Yamaha systems at many conferences and training sessions, states John Petrarca (Audio Install Project Coordinator, King Street Church). Since the church is made up mostly of volunteers and house audio duties are shared, we needed a system that was up to date and able to make transitions from one service style to the next. The system also allows for future growth, from video production to multi-site possibilities.”

Rosenbalm also said the Yamaha CL5 was a natural choice for the FOH console since church engineers were already familiar with the CentraLogic platform on the M7CL. “The console provides them the ability to mix twice the number of channels, adds new dynamics and EQ plug-ins via the Premium Rack, and employs Dante protocol for device connectivity. Utilizing Dante networking significantly cleaned up the signal path from the existing traditional copper snake. It also gave the church the ability to connect multiple venues on campus as well as provide broadcast with new recording possibilities. Overall, we are extremely pleased with the results from Yamaha/NEXO system.”

“Having a system that has a high level of performance especially with vocal clarity was crucial, states Tyler Roberts, Media and Production Coordinator at King Street Church. The system also had to be volunteer friendly, and by installing a Yamaha solution that includes the CL5 console and NEXO speaker system, we successfully completed our goals. In addition, the Dante infrastructure provides additional flexibility and allows us to integrate both venues together while helping to facilitate future growth.”

JOHNSON AUDIO WORKS SUCCESS IS BASED ON QUALITY: DANLEY SOUND LABS SPEAKERS AND SUBS HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN

COMER, GEORGIA: Bill Johnson knows live sound. Before assuming the roles of full-time technical director and chief audio engineer for the massive touring Kenneth Copeland Ministries, where he served for fourteen years, Johnson cut his teeth mixing for acts such as Concrete Blonde, the Dave Matthews Band, Ice T, and Widespread Panic. In 2000, Johnson started his own company, Johnson Audio Works, to marshal that extensive experience for the benefit of clients with small- to mid-sized live events. Recently, Johnson upgraded his rig to Danley Sound Labs, his newfound favorite loudspeakers and subwoofers. Now, Johnson graces clients with improved fidelity and impact delivered by a pair of lightweight but hugely efficient Danley SM-80 full-range loudspeakers and a pair of powerful Danley TH-118 subwoofers.

Most of Johnson’s clients are ministries, government, and community organizations, with a few upscale weddings thrown in for good measure; and three-quarters of the content he is responsible for is spoken word. His audience sizes typically range between 300 and 700 people. After recently relocating from Texas to Georgia, Johnson has developed a closer relationship with the engineers at Georgia-based Danley Sound Labs. “Of course, I was aware of Danley Sound Labs and its reputation – the pro audio industry isn’t so big,” he said. “But the first time I actually heard Danley products, I was hooked.” Part of Johnson’s success is his commitment not just to sound quality, but to the system’s overall appearance and its fine scale details. “I aim for installation quality for temporary events,” he said.

The Northside Jam is an annual event put on by Rick Nunez Ministries in Fort Worth, Texas and serves as an excellent example of the power of Johnson’s new portable Danley system. Last year, Howard Scott, former band leader of the 1970s act, War, headlined and drew 1,500 people to Marine Park. “The guy I hired to run FOH couldn’t believe I was seriously going to cover the event with just two Danley SM-80s for full-range,” Johnson said. “He could understand the two Danley BC-415 subwoofers, which I had on loan from Ivan [Beaver, Danley’s chief engineer]. But I walked in with the two SM-80s, one on each arm. They just don’t look capable of delivering the necessary SPLs. He expressed his concern but totally changed his tune after sound check. Not only were the SM-80s plenty loud enough, the sound quality was outstanding. He said it felt like mixing on studio monitors! That was at 110 feet from the stage, outdoors! I walked back 350 feet and the sound was still natural and balanced. Danley’s high-end output is notable and makes the SM-80 pleasant and effective for both near- and far-field applications.”

He continued, “In my world, it’s hard to find a one-box-fits-all solution, but the SM-80 is it. Not only is the sound quality excellent, the size greatly simplifies my set up time. That’s critical, because the margin on live events is small. I’m able to charge the competition’s rates, but where they have a four or five hour bump in, I’m able to get the job done in just two. Moreover, the Danley system tunes up with almost no adjustment, so I’m able to quickly move on to making things look nice and tending to the client’s requests. I think part of Danley’s success is the fact that everyone in the company has lived and breathed in the live and installed sound industries before. It’s more than just the sound.”
