Landmark Oklahoma City Church Finds a Sound Solution with Iconyx

Oklahoma City, OK – June 2012… The distinctive white vaulted roof of Oklahoma City’s First Christian Church stands as an eye-catching landmark to residents and visitors alike. One of this city’s founding houses of worship, First Christian Church has inhabited several locations since its 1889 origin, moving to its current location in 1956.

The massive domed structure – referred to by local press as “The First Christian Church of Tomorrow” during its dedication ceremony – was designed by R. Duane Conner of Conner & Pojezny Designs, a congregation member during the 1950s. The expansive, thin-shelled concrete dome covers the main sanctuary, which seats 1200 in theater-style pews. The sanctuary houses a large pipe organ and frequently features performances by symphonic orchestras, bell choirs and other chorale groups.

While the building has won much acclaim as an architectural masterpiece, it has been equally disparaged as an acoustical nightmare, its concave ceiling and hard surfaces creating a tremendously reverberative environment that is certainly one of a kind. Spoken word intelligibility has long been an ongoing struggle, with the church going through numerous sound systems over the past 50 years in a ceaseless attempt to achieve an acceptable audio quality.

“First Christian Church is by far the most acoustically challenging space I’ve ever experienced,” reports Danny Nix, sales and marketing manager at AVL Systems Design, the Oklahoma-based audio video designer-integrator responsible for the sound system upgrade. “They had invested a great deal of time and money into several different audio systems over the years, and were pretty much ready to give up on finding a system that would suitably meet their requirements. That’s when we presented them with the Renkus-Heinz Iconyx solution.”

“We realized that any system we considered had to meet certain performance requirements, and still deliver clear & articulate sound to every seat in the house,” says Marc Pierce, President & Owner of AVL Systems Design. “We exhaustively studied technical specs & solutions from manufacturers to maintain a balance between quality and value, so our client would receive the best product necessary to accurately meet their needs and also maintain budgetary criteria.”

Pierce, along with AVL’s director of engineering, Kenny Kendrick, designed First Christian’s new audio system using Iconyx digitally steerable array column loudspeakers from Renkus-Heinz. Two Iconyx IC16-R loudspeakers are surface-mounted high on the walls to either side of the proscenium. The Iconyx steerable beam technology enables sound to be focused downward, away from the domed ceiling and towards the main floor seating area.

“It’s literally the first system that has worked for them,” says Nix. “The difference is like night and day.”

As often happens with classic architecture, aesthetics prevented AVL from extending cabling to the Iconyx cabinets. AVL responded with a highly innovative solution. “We are transmitting the signal wirelessly using an AKG in-ear monitor system, routed through the DSP to power the speakers,” explains Nix. “It has worked really well and the end result is exceptional sound quality with no visible wires.” A custom paint job by Renkus-Heinz further adds to the Iconyx cabinets’ low profile appearance.

AVL’s upgrade for the church also included a video component, installing a pair of Digital Projection E-Vision WXGA projectors with long throw lenses. The projectors fire onto dual Stewart 14′ by 8′ film screens. Two Samsung 400DX-2 46-inch LCD screens and an Analog Way EFD-341 high-resolution video switcher/scaler complete the system.

AVL’s Nix reports the church is so pleased with the sound quality of their new Iconyx system that they are planning additional upgrades elsewhere on the campus using more Renkus-Heinz gear.

VUE Audiotechnik Debuts Three Product Classes at InfoComm 2012

Las Vegas, NV, June 2012 – VUE Audiotechnik will premiere three powerful loudspeaker families at this week’s InfoComm convention in Las Vegas. This will be the first official product unveiling since the company’s founding earlier this year.

Addressing a broad range of applications with advanced technologies, innovative designs, and class-leading performance, VUE Audiotechnik’s H, A and I Classes incorporate purpose-designed transducers, enclosures, and system electronics to deliver exceptional results for their respective market segments.

Highlights include:

  • H Class family with Truextent™ beryllium HF compression drivers: Better high-frequency performance than aluminum or titanium
  • Active Compliance Management™ (ACM): A patent-pending subwoofer technology combining sophisticated DSP with a hybrid enclosure for exceptional definition and output
  • Purpose-designed components: Fully optimized for every driver/cabinet combination across all three classes.
  • Network monitoring: Via standard Ethernet protocols and accessible through an intuitive software interface.
  • I Class for AV contractors: Professional-grade components, wood enclosures and included hanging hardware

Ken Berger, CEO of VUE Audiotechnik comments, “We’ve worked hard to ensure that each of our classes brings something truly unique to their respective markets — from cutting edge technologies and innovative designs in the flagship H Class, to a very compelling price/performance equation in our I Class systems.”

“But this is just the beginning,” continued Berger. “The technologies revealed today will join others in development, and all three classes will expand significantly over the next 24 months. It’s really quite exciting to debut this first wave at InfoComm and to underscore our commitment to serving the industry we value so highly.”

H Class: Performance without Compromise

VUE Audiotechnik imbues the flagship H Class with its most advanced technologies and innovative designs.

At the heart of every H Class full-range system is VUE’s proprietary, beryllium-based compression driver. Beryllium delivers better sonic performance than both aluminum and titanium thanks to an extremely high stiffness-to-mass ratio, which dramatically reduces mechanical deformation (breakup), and shifts resonant frequencies above the
audible range.

h-12 active two-way (click for full size)

Each beryllium HF transducer is paired with an equally advanced LF counterpart. To increase power handling and decrease power compression, all transducers deployed in full-range H Class systems feature a large, 100 mm/4-inch voice coil.

Active onboard electronics include system-optimized amplification and DSP for each driver and cabinet combination. Network control and monitoring capabilities are available via standard Ethernet-based protocols and accessible through an intuitive
software interface.

All H Class enclosures are manufactured using multi-ply, cross-grain laminated birch with extensive interior bracing and a rugged polyurethane finish. Full-range models include integrated hanging points, while h-12 models also include a pole-mount system for use with stands or atop subwoofers.

HS-28 Subwoofer with ACM Technology (click for full size)

At launch, the H Class includes 12- and 15-inch two-way models (wide and narrow coverage) as well as the hs-28 subwoofer, a dual 18-inch active design that debuts VUE Audiotechnik’s patent pending Active Compliance Management (ACM) technology.

ACM technology utilizes a unique hybrid configuration in which two 18-inch woofers share a common vented chamber. One woofer’s frontal radiation is direct, while the second woofer is set at 90 degrees and drives a second vented chamber that has fourth-order response characteristics. Each woofer has its own amplifier and DSP control. This sophisticated combination of physics and DSP yields a substantial increase in amplitude over conventional designs, with the summed output of drivers and vents maintaining flat phase response and exhibiting low distortion, while occupying a more compact enclosure.

A Class: Applied Engineering, Precision Performance

The A Class is designed specifically for working professionals seeking a better balance of performance, versatility, and value. Benefiting from the same design principles behind the flagship H Class, the versatile A Class models possess similar voicing characteristics, allowing them to easily outperform their competition in this segment.

a-15, a-12, a-10, a-8 (click for full size)

At launch, the A Class range includes passive systems in 8-, 10-, 12-, and 15-inch two-way configurations, as well as a selection of three powerful subwoofers. And as with the flagship H Class, all A Class transducers and enclosures are manufactured to VUE Audiotechnik’s exacting specifications to work in synchronous harmony for exceptional performance.

Every A Class two-way model combines a neodymium LF transducer, neodymium compression driver, and a system-optimized, high-order crossover to deliver a smooth and accurate frequency response at maximum SPLs. Each compression driver is mounted to a 70 x 55 degree horn that can be rotated for ideal dispersion in either horizontal or vertical configurations. The larger A-12 and A-15 models will operate in either passive (single amped) or bi-amped modes via a simple, high current switch located on the rear panel.

as-418 Subwoofer (click for full size)

The A Class subwoofer family is led by the formidable as-418, which combines four 18-inch drivers into a dual-isobaric design to deliver higher output, lower distortion, and lower power compression — all from an enclosure the size of most dual 18-inch subwoofers.

A Class cabinets are manufactured to the same standards as the flagship H Class, using multi-ply, cross-grain laminated birch with extensive interior bracing and a rugged polyurethane finish. Full-range models feature a unique pentagon shape for easy use in either monitor or FOH orientations. Integrated hanging points provide flexible flying options, while a pole-mount system allows for portable use on stands or atop subwoofers.

I Class: Step Away from the Plastic Boxes

VUE Audiotechnik’s I Class offers AV Contractors a high-performance alternative to the bevy of plastic-boxed systems available today.

Addressing a broad range of applications while delivering sonic performance that far exceeds expectations in this segment, I Class models benefit from professional-grade components and the same manufacturing processes behind all VUE Audiotechnik systems. As a result, every model in the line features purpose-built transducers, rugged wood enclosures and most importantly, VUE Audiotechnik’s unwavering attention to detail and quality.

L to R: i-2 x 4.5, i-4.5, i-6, i-8, is-26 Sub (click for full size)

At launch, the I Class range includes surface-mount, full-range systems as well as three powered and passive subwoofer options — allowing contractors and system designers to address applications ranging from compact PA to ancillary fill in larger distributed systems.

I Class wood enclosures are protected with a rugged industrial-grade coating, and every full-range model ships with integrated surface mounting hardware right in the box.

ENTASYS Helps St Marks Bridge Traditional and Contemporary

Wilmington, DE, May 2012….. Beginning with a small handful of neighbors in 1942, St Mark’s Lutheran Church has grown over the years to become one of the area’s most beloved houses of worship. Its congregation of more than 500 members includes a diverse mix of young and old, and the church offers two different services every Sunday – one  traditional and one more contemporary – to accommodate this diversity.

The church’s original sanctuary was largely destroyed by fire several years ago, prompting a long-term renovation process that recently included the design and installation of a new, modern sound system. As Tony Albano of Avondale, PA-based Naamans Creek Audio/Video explains, the new system was designed to accommodate the disparate requirements of two different types of services.

“It’s not a particularly large room, but it’s got a very high peaked ceiling, so there’s a fair amount of reflectivity, which has created some intelligibility issues,” says Albano. “Since they also offer a contemporary service with live musicians, we had a bit of a challenge with loudspeaker placement. If we located the loudspeakers behind the altar, they would then be behind the musicians as well – a major feedback risk.”

To address this challenge, Albano’s design-build opted for a pair of ENTASYS high-performance full-range column line arrays from Community Professional Loudspeakers, powered by Crown CTS4200 amplification. The consistent, focused coverage ENTASYS provides enabled Albano to position the loudspeakers far closer to the congregation than would be possible for most other systems.

“We ended up mounting the ENTASYS columns pretty much right at the front of the pews,” he says. “In fact, when you see where they’re mounted, your first impression is that there’s no way it can work, that it’s going to blow away the person sitting right in front of it. The pastor came in and looked at it and said ‘no way, everyone’s going to be sitting in the back.’ But the fact is, the ENTASYS system is so precise in its ability to control the waveform that we were able to create a pattern that projected great coverage to the back of the room while delivering manageable volume to the front pews.”

Albano says the new ENTASYS columns have worked out quite well for St. Marks. “They are extremely happy with the system,” he says. “It’s helped immensely with spoken word intelligibility for the sermons, and has done wonders for the music as well.”

NEW ASHLY COMMERCIAL MIXER/AMPLIFIER ENDS UP IN FUNERAL HOME

hillcrest.JPGBEDFORD PARK, OHIO – MAY 2012: With increasing frequency, the administrators at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Bedford Heights, Ohio were hearing the same simple request; a request they could not properly fill. During visitation prior to a funeral, the bereaved asked to play their own music. Very often, it was the music cherished by the deceased or music that was especially grounding in such a trying time. But beyond supplying an inelegant boom box, Hillcrest had no infrastructure for music playback. The administrators called on Audio Video Interiors and Safety Technologies (AVIST) of nearby Middleburg Heights, Ohio to provide a cost-effective solution. AVIST director Gary Matthews designed a simple, robust system around the new 3-input, 1-output Ashly Audio TM-360 public address mixer/amplifier.

“I have a lot of customers who are looking for very simple, very cost-effective solutions for straightforward sound reinforcement situations,” more

A STEREO PAIR OF DANLEY JERICHO HORNS HERALD A NEW REFERENCE SPEAKER MODEL FOR CHURCH AUDIO

goodlettsville_tn_church.JPGGOODLETTSVILLE, TENNESSEE – MAY 2012: The parishioners at First Baptist Church of Goodlettsville, Tennessee are the first churchgoers in the world to enjoy the exacting fidelity, soul-lifting power, and clean, even coverage of a pair of Danley Sound Labs Jericho JH-90 full-range, point-source loudspeakers, heretofore installed mainly in sports arenas and stadiums as well as concert venues. Professional Audio Solutions, Inc. designed and installed the first-of-its-kind project under the leadership of Scott Oliver, director of contracting and engineering. Once Oliver included the costs of labor and amplifier channels, he discovered that purchasing and installing a stereo pair of Jericho JH-90s would be less expensive – and far better sounding – than a conventional multi-box solution.

Like many churches, Goodlettsville FBC transitioned over the years from having only traditional services to offering a mix of traditional and contemporary services. Its old PA system consisted more
