Those were the days when Billy Thompson was still playing the role of mad scientist at a lab bench overrun with oscilloscopes, custom-made real-time analyzers, and voltmeters. The smell of solder hung thick in the air. Among many other gems, Thompson used that charismatic setup to design Ashly’s 1970s-era SC-Series of rack-mounted processors, which included classic compressors, equalizers, crossovers, line mixers, mic preamps, and all of the other goodies that today reside inside Ashly’s Protea™ Digital Signal Processing platform. The live sound industry flocked to these and other Ashly products because, for a fair price, they effectively solved real problems and were well-known to reliably endure the stresses of life on the road.

In the 1980s, Thompson pioneered Ashly’s now-legendary MOS-FET amplifiers, which revolutionized the amplifier market by dramatically increasing amplifier power and reliability while minimizing size and cost. Ashly’s MOS-FET amplifiers were among the first to be certified for meeting Lucas-films’ stringent THX movie theater sound systems. Today, Ashly continues in that tradition by delivering high-power, high-fidelity amplifiers in small-footprint, multi-channel configurations that maintain Ashly’s hallmark reliability and value.

“Our relatively small size allows us to be quite nimble and responsive to our customers, whom we deeply value,” said Wentling. “Ashly Audio still operates a full factory in Webster, New York, just outside of Rochester, where we design and manufacture all of our networkable products, including high-power Class-D amplifiers, DSP Matrix processors, and some legacy handmade analog mixers, like the MX-508. In addition, we have responded to market forces by opening Asia-based manufacturing for our KLR-Series amplifiers and some legacy analog products. However, this is just a component of our U.S.-based operations. Indeed, we expanded our U.S. manufacturing plant last year and grew the R&D team. We continue to add to our product line-up in the area of high-performance Class-D amplification, as well as DSP matrix & system processors.”

A development Thompson couldn’t have anticipated without Steve Jobs-like prescience is how quickly the pro audio industry has adopted network technology from the IT industry. Canvas Church Brings Active Integration into their New Home

Irvine, CA – June 2014…. As the old saying goes, sometimes you have to break away to come back home. The faithful who founded Canvas Church know that story well. The founders of Canvas, a small group of self-described “entrepreneurial misfits,” broke away from Irvine Presbyterian in 2011 to form a different kind of church: a church “for people who don’t like church.”

The original congregation has more than tripled in size since then and recently relocated to a larger home. The new digs are, not surprisingly, a bit unconventional, occupying a warehouse space in a relatively nondescript industrial park. The inside, however, is warm and welcoming, and the cozy sanctuary is outfitted with a powerful audio system centered on the new PreSonus® StudioLive™ AI Active Integration™ line of mixers and loudspeakers.

“We do a sort of post-contemporary service, and we’ve typically got anywhere between four and nine musicians up on the stage,” explains Norman Gordon, the parishioner who specified the system and can typically be found running front-of-house. “It’s a full band: bass, drums, guitars, keyboards, and a few vocalists. There’s a lot of stuff going on.”

Gordon recommended the new PreSonus StudioLive 32.4.2AI console, along with StudioLive 328AI full-range speakers and a StudioLive 18sAI subwoofer as the main front-of-house system. “The AI series really had everything we needed,” he explains. “We had a 24-channel analog console we’d been using, and even though we really didn’t need the extra channels right away, we went for the 32-channel mixer because it was the first console released in the AI line.”

For Gordon, it begins with the sound. “Having been an analog guy most of my life, I really love that warm, English, analog sound. It’s something I wouldn’t have expected with digital. I have to say, though, I was really, really pleasantly surprised at how warm and open the console sounded.”

Of course, the StudioLive’s digital features are also well utilized. “We use the snapshot scene memory for a lot of stuff: mute scenes, mix scenes. It allows us to get to things very quickly. And having all that DSP horsepower, with compression and EQ and everything, really enables us to do a lot of very cool stuff.”

Every service gets recorded, Gordon adds. “We use Capture™ software to record the individual tracks in real time, and then we import them into Studio One® for mixing.”

A pair of StudioLive 328AI Active Integration monitors completes the package, with an 18sAI subwoofer for low-frequency reinforcement. “While we were waiting for the speakers to arrive, we had a couple of different loaner systems in here,” Gordon recounts. “It didn’t sound bad, but when we installed the StudioLive speakers and fired them up for the first time, the difference in clarity was just amazing. Articulation is really, really important to me — the ability to understand both the singing and the spoken word. And the StudioLive monitors sounded great right out of the box. They’ve got a really smooth response.”

Gordon reports that the entire congregation has been happy with the new system. “You know what they say about the soundman — if you don’t get any complaints, it means you’re doing your job.”

Pennsylvania Church Upgrades with Yamaha and NEXO

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Morris Light & Sound (Nashville) recently completed an audio upgrade at the King Street Church in Chambersburg, PA consisting of a NEXO GEO S12 line array (five GEO S12s per side and two RS18 Ray Subs flown in the center) along with a Yamaha CL5 digital audio console at front of house, and two Rio 3224-D input/output located in an amp rack behind the stage.

“Given the traditional architecture and diverse worship styles at King Street, we needed to provide a system that was not only aesthetically pleasing but also met performance requirements for the various services at the church, states Danny Rosenbalm, Vice President – Integration, Morris Light & Sound. The NEXO GEOS12s were a great choice for this application as they provide exceptional coverage and strong full range music reproduction, all while keeping the spoken word and vocal clarity of paramount importance.”

With a congregation of approximately 2,000, King Street Church seats 550 in the sanctuary and 725 in the Baker Center, a separate contemporary worship space. Three service styles are held each Sunday: traditional, contemporary, and a blended service. The contemporary and blended services have anywhere from six to ten musicians and vocalists as part of the praise band.

“The tech team had heard the NEXO and Yamaha systems at many conferences and training sessions, states John Petrarca (Audio Install Project Coordinator, King Street Church). Since the church is made up mostly of volunteers and house audio duties are shared, we needed a system that was up to date and able to make transitions from one service style to the next. The system also allows for future growth, from video production to multi-site possibilities.”

Rosenbalm also said the Yamaha CL5 was a natural choice for the FOH console since church engineers were already familiar with the CentraLogic platform on the M7CL. “The console provides them the ability to mix twice the number of channels, adds new dynamics and EQ plug-ins via the Premium Rack, and employs Dante protocol for device connectivity. Utilizing Dante networking significantly cleaned up the signal path from the existing traditional copper snake. It also gave the church the ability to connect multiple venues on campus as well as provide broadcast with new recording possibilities. Overall, we are extremely pleased with the results from Yamaha/NEXO system.”

The system also had to be volunteer friendly, and by installing a Yamaha solution that includes the CL5 console and NEXO speaker system, we successfully completed our goals. JOHNSON AUDIO WORKS SUCCESS IS BASED ON QUALITY: DANLEY SOUND LABS SPEAKERS AND SUBS HELP MAKE IT HAPPEN

COMER, GEORGIA: Bill Johnson knows live sound. Before assuming the roles of full-time technical director and chief audio engineer for the massive touring Kenneth Copeland Ministries, where he served for fourteen years, Johnson cut his teeth mixing for acts such as Concrete Blonde, the Dave Matthews Band, Ice T, and Widespread Panic. In 2000, Johnson started his own company, Johnson Audio Works, to marshal that extensive experience for the benefit of clients with small- to mid-sized live events. Recently, Johnson upgraded his rig to Danley Sound Labs, his newfound favorite loudspeakers and subwoofers. Now, Johnson graces clients with improved fidelity and impact delivered by a pair of lightweight but hugely efficient Danley SM-80 full-range loudspeakers and a pair of powerful Danley TH-118 subwoofers.

Most of Johnson’s clients are ministries, government, and community organizations, with a few upscale weddings thrown in for good measure; and three-quarters of the content he is responsible for is spoken word. Last year, Howard Scott, former band leader of the 1970s act, War, headlined and drew 1,500 people to Marine Park. “The guy I hired to run FOH couldn’t believe I was seriously going to cover the event with just two Danley SM-80s for full-range,” Johnson said. “He could understand the two Danley BC-415 subwoofers, which I had on loan from Ivan [Beaver, Danley’s chief engineer]. But I walked in with the two SM-80s, one on each arm. They just don’t look capable of delivering the necessary SPLs. He expressed his concern but totally changed his tune after sound check. Not only were the SM-80s plenty loud enough, the sound quality was outstanding. He said it felt like mixing on studio monitors! That was at 110 feet from the stage, outdoors! I walked back 350 feet and the sound was still natural and balanced. Danley’s high-end output is notable and makes the SM-80 pleasant and effective for both near- and far-field applications.”

He continued, “In my world, it’s hard to find a one-box-fits-all solution, but the SM-80 is it. Not only is the sound quality excellent, the size greatly simplifies my set up time. That’s critical, because the margin on live events is small. I’m able to charge the competition’s rates, but where they have a four or five hour bump in, I’m able to get the job done in just two. Moreover, the Danley system tunes up with almost no adjustment, so I’m able to quickly move on to making things look nice and tending to the client’s requests. I think part of Danley’s success is the fact that everyone in the company has lived and breathed in the live and installed sound industries before. It’s more than just the sound.”

Opticomm-EMCORE to demonstrate Video Wall driven by Eclipse HD at InfoComm

Alhambra, CA – Opticomm-EMCORE, a leading provider of high-definition video, audio and data transport solutions for Fiber, IP, CATx and Coax networks, will be using the InfoComm 2014 show in Las Vegas on June 18-20 as a platform to demonstrate the quality of the new Eclipse HD as it extends and switches 1080p or 1920×1200 multimedia feeds across a dedicated IP network, sent to a four-panel video wall as example of its capabilities. In addition, other high-quality products for pre- and post-production, live-feed, and Professional A/V will be on display at the booth stand, C7716.

Opticomm-EMCORE will construct a cost-efficient video/audio/data distribution system over an IP network to show design consultants, system integrators and home theater aficionados the painless switching and routing of the new Eclipse HD. This encoder/decoder system provides visually lossless transmission and processing of HDMI 1.3, 5.1 channel audio, RS-232 data and USB HID keyboard/mouse (KVM), over a dedicated Gigabit Ethernet network. A media player, Blu-ray or DVD player, laptop, camera or other HDMI source can send HD signals to the Eclipse HD encoder, which can then be sent to a Layer 2/3 Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch with IGMP 2.0 (if desired), which lastly can be received by one or more decoders to be connected to single or multiple displays. There are virtually limitless ways to configure a HD matrix by stacking IP switches.

In addition to the Eclipse HD, we will be showing the NV series as a part of the IP network exhibit, which utilizes JPEG 2000 encoding and decoding for lossless DVI, HDMI, and 3G HD-SDI distribution. Also we will also be highlighting, in our booth, the c-linx series, Optiva and GBOX fiber products. The c-linx series are small, stand-alone box units utilizing HDBaseT technology to extend signals for extension up to 100 meters, over CATx. The company will also display the Optiva OTP-1DVI2A1UKM, which has been upgraded with a larger bit-rate of 10GB optics and now supports up to 4K resolution and KVM over a secure, lossless multimode fiber up to 10 km and singlemode fiber up to 25 km. The first in the GBOX Series, GBX-HDMI-VGA, provides for the transmission of either HDMI 1.4b with HDCP and HEAC support, or VGA / Component for legacy stereo analog sources, in a point-to-point configuration. It also supports stereo analog and S/PDIF digital audio, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, bidirectional RS-232 and IR support.

TACOMA, WASHINGTON – APRIL 2014: Fellowship Bible Church in Tacoma, Washington started as a gathering of friends in a living room on July 7, 1977 (7-7-77) and grew over the decades that followed to become a beacon in the community. The church moved into its current 750-seat sanctuary in 1996 and developed an engaging contemporary worship style complete with a small band. However, the church members were long dissatisfied by the sound quality in the sanctuary. So when they recently raised the funds, they sought high and low for the very best sound reinforcement system to replace it. That search took them to Audio Video Electronics, a Twin Cities-based A/V integration firm with extensive experience designing and installing systems based on Danley Sound Labs components. Now, Danley synergy horn loudspeakers and DBH subwoofers provide beautifully articulate, musical reinforcement with even coverage.

“Their old system was in a pretty sorry state when we first arrived to meet and understand their needs,” said Stefan Svard, president of Audio Video Electronics. “They were most interested in getting a new system that would be consistent; Consistent not only in its day-to-day performance, but consistent in its coverage of the seating area. One of the things I really like about Danley is the phase coherency of its designs. It makes for consistent patterns and, perhaps more importantly, remarkably consistent sound quality within that beam. I’ve been a Danley supporter for a long time now, and I’ve really come to believe in [President] Mike [Hedden] and the rest of the company.”

The new system is much simpler than the old system. Three Danley SH-50s comprise a center cluster with a pair of Danley SM-60s providing side fill. A pair of Danley DBH-218 subwoofers generates ample deep bass. Svard used Danley’s modeling software to optimize the positioning and component selection. Three Powersoft Duecanali 3904 amplifiers with integrated DSP power all of the full-range boxes, with a channel to spare for an additional down fill that the church will have funds for in the future. A single Powersoft K20 with integrated DSP powers both subwoofers. A Midas PRO2 console serves as a flexible, easy-to-use front end. “The whole system is much simpler now,” said Svard. “They have a nice console with a digital snake and a clean rack. Although it’s not complicated, it gives Fellowship Bible Church a lot of punch and room for growth.” In addition to the sound reinforcement system, Audio Video Electronics also gave the church a new Vivitek d6010 6000 lumen projector and a 16×10’ pearlescent Da-Lite snap-screen.

“I love that when I cluster the Danley boxes, they act like one large speaker,” said Svard. “Other manufacturers generate comb filtering and lobing, which can cause some nasty feedback when the cluster is above the pulpit. Danley doesn’t do that. Danley gives me excellent pattern control with uniform sound. The clarity of a Danley box is unmatched, in my opinion. The low-end at Fellowship Bible Church is tremendous. We had a few of their new DBH-218s at a much larger, 5,000-seat church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and they were great. We arranged Fellowship’s two DBH-218s to give some directivity to the low end, which gives them nice on-stage volume and ample bass in the seats. In all, we gave them a premium system all the way across, from the console… to the amps… to the loudspeakers and subs. They’re very happy with it.”

DANLEY SOUND LABS HOSTS TRAINING SESSIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTORS

GAINESVILLE, GEORGIA – APRIL 2014: Danley Sound Labs, manufacturer of innovative loudspeaker and subwoofer solutions for high SPL applications, hosted an ongoing series of training sessions for its growing team of international distributors. Key members of Finnish distributor LF Imports came to Danley’s Gainesville, Georgia headquarters in February, followed in March by members of Singapore distributor The Soundsmith and German distributor Carsten Eichstaedt-BLL-Veranstaltungstechnik. Participants engaged in critical listening exercises across a wide range of Danley products, from the flagship SH-50 loudspeaker and BC-415 subwoofer, to the company’s latest offerings, the lobe-free columnar SBH-10 Skinny Big Horn loudspeaker and the fully-weatherized OS-80 loudspeaker. Participants also learned the finer points of Danley’s free, easy-to-use DDT 2D & 3D system modeling software.

“We are developing the international side of Danley and are actively seeking new distributors in key geographies around the world,” said Jonathan “J.P.” Parker, Danley’s director of sales. “We realize that education is critical because, although Danley gets a lot of favorable press, decisions are made on a project-by-project basis, and making decisions about audio is often subjective. After going over the technology behind Danley’s product line, these training sessions give our distributors a frame of reference for the aspects of sound that they – and their customers – should be listening for. Once they have that frame of reference, it’s much easier to explain and show through a demo why Danley offers the better solution. Challenging Texas Chapel Gets Help from Iconyx

Tyler, TX – March 2014… The Chapel of Saints Peter and Paul opened its doors last year after a lengthy construction project, rewarding this east Texas town with a brand new 13,000 square foot main building, along with a new softball field. The 650 seat sanctuary is a beautiful, classically designed structure with a high peaked roof and plenty of ornate wood, marble, and glass.

“It’s a really impressive architectural design, and the acoustics are ideal for their choir and organ,” explains Jason Brantley, CEO of Longview, TX-based Sound Logic Integrations. “But it’s not so good for the band or for intelligibility.”

The Sound Logic crew was brought in to design the audio for the new building, opting for a system centered around Renkus-Heinz Iconyx digitally steerable array loudspeakers. A pair of IC16-R-II columns mounted on either side of the proscenium covers the entire room.

“We originally specified some acoustical treatment to cut down the reverberance a bit,” says Brantley. “But the budget for sound absorption was cut halfway through the project, and we ended up with about a quarter of the treatment we had planned for. That’s where the Iconyx really saved the day.”

Brantley says the ability to tightly focus the sound toward the seating areas, and away from walls, windows, and other reflective surfaces, was critical to the success of the audio system design. “The band and the choir are not on stage — they’re in a choir pocket that’s stage left. The Iconyx enabled us to take the first beam and push it right past where the choir mic is hung, to eliminate any feedback issues. That kind of precision is something we could have only done with the Iconyx.”
