ASHLY AUDIO POWERED PROCESSORS AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY’S SAGE CHAPEL CONDENSING SEVEN FEET OF PROCESSING & AMPLIFICATION INTO SEVEN INCHES

ITHACA, NEW YORK – MARCH 2014: Erected in 1875, Sage Chapel sits near the center of the picturesque campus of Cornell University in upstate New York. It is expressly non-denominational, and its interior is adorned by symbols of all the major and minor religions from around the world. For services and other events, Sage Chapel seats over 700 people, plus a large choir. To help voices carry with intelligibility in the large space, its sound reinforcement system has evolved with the state of technology over the decades. Apart from the chapel’s two organs, the system also provides reinforcement for any musical instruments used. Its latest upgrade condensed seven feet of rack space used for 1990s-era processing and amplification into just seven inches using an Ashly Pema 8250 and an Ashly ne4250pe. Each unit combines Ashly’s Protea signal processing with clean, high-powered amplifier channels – twelve in all.

“We put the previous system in over twenty years ago to deal with issues of intelligibility that were plaguing them at the time,” said Barny Cole, president of Calf Audio, also of Ithaca. “We put in three sets of loudspeakers arrayed in stereo pairs on delays running from the front of the chapel to the back. It delivered great sound quality, but it took a ton of processing to dial in. In those days, that meant a lot of separate rack units to individually equalize and time align each component. That system took seven feet of rack space! The university approached us recently to ask if we could condense all that processing because the closet was coveted by the janitorial staff. Of course, they didn’t want to lean their mops against a bunch of electrical equipment, so if we could condense it down and raise it up, everyone would be happy.”

With its fully-implemented front-end processing capabilities, the Ashly Pema 8250 now takes care of all of the “everyday” mixing and processing chores. It also delivers eight 250-Watt amplifier channels, all within two rack spaces. Because the Pema 8250 also includes line-level outputs from the processing section, it feeds the four-channel Ashly ne4250pe amplifiers with optional processing. All together, the system provides twelve 250-Watt amplifier channels and all of the processing they require in a tamperproof package. “I’m predisposed to choosing Ashly,” Cole admitted. “The company is a close neighbor – they’re just an hour-and-a-half down the road – and I like the individuals who work there. Ashly’s products are famously solid and reliable, and their service is spectacular. Since they deliver all of that at a huge price advantage, it would seem silly to bother with anyone else!”

An Ashly neWR-5 wall panel remote control provides simple selection of several presets. At its most basic, the Ashly Pema 8250 auto-mixes all of the usual inputs. The presets also allow selection of arrangements for other common event scenarios. For more complicated events, a console can patch in and take control of the inputs. Calf Audio is usually called in to provide sound engineer support for those more complicated events.

ASHLY MIXES IT UP WITH VINTAGE MOS-FET AND NEW AMPLIFIERS TO UPDATE MIDLAND NAZARENE CHURCH

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN – MARCH 2014: Though founded decades earlier, the Midland Nazarene Church in Midland, Michigan moved to its present, 450-seat church in 1970. Although much changed in the four decades that followed, the church’s sound system didn’t change until only very recently. It bore the burden of the church’s increasing use of reinforced music, and equipment slowly succumbed to time and wear. When finally the only things that were still functioning as they had when they went in were a pair of Ashly FTX-1501 MOS-FET amplifiers (circa early 1980s), Midland Nazarene put its renovation out to bid. Nearby A/V integrator Center Line Technologies won the bid, scrapped everything except the perfectly functioning “vintage” Ashly amps, and added new Ashly amplifiers and processing to bring the sound system up to modern standards.

“This was the kind of church that likes to do things for themselves,” said Tony Rogalski, vice president at Center Line Technologies. “As their on-stage needs grew, they added four mini floor monitors for the praise team, two monitors for the pulpit, and two monitors for the musicians. All told, they had eight floor monitors on stage and only two small loudspeakers to cover the congregation. And they were the original two loudspeakers!”

Rogalski replaced those two loudspeakers with a new JBL system comprised of multiple flown loudspeakers and monitors, plus subwoofers. The new system called for vastly more channels, and while he was happy to keep the Ashly FTX-1501 MOS-FET amplifiers in service for monitors, he added an Ashly KLR 5000 to power the left/right loudspeakers and an Ashly KLR 4000 to power the center loudspeaker and the flown monitors. A new Ashly ne24.24M processor with modular I/O now replaces the scant analog processing of the original system. He increased its I/O count to 8×8 to handle all the new equipment. New Shure wireless microphones and an Aviom system provide a robust input set, which the church now mixes with a new Allen & Heath GLD-80 digital console. Rogalski repurposed several of the floor monitors for use in the classrooms that serve as overflow.

“We started working with Ashly processing over fifteen years ago, and it became our go-to processor,” said Rogalski. “Ashly processors never failed, and my field techs consistently reported that they were the easiest to program and gave them the most consistent results. Why mess with that track record? Ashly amplifiers won me over when we started specifying their combined amplifier/processor units. At their price point, it’s like buying an amplifier and getting a processor for free. Ashly amplifiers have proven to be every bit as robust as the Ashly processors that I’m more familiar with.”

He continued, “Midland, Michigan supposedly has more PhDs than anywhere else, and selling them on a system was a bit of challenge because they were all rocket scientists. Because their original Ashly amplifiers had proven themselves, they had no problem with our choice of Ashly for the new amps and processing. They’re very happy with the way things turned out. There is a clarity and naturalness to the sound, and the coverage, which had previously been spotty, is now even and seamless.”

With inexpensive plenum rated fiber cables, system designers can now rethink their equipment layouts without sacrificing the huge performance benefit of using a remote antenna system for their wireless system.”

The RF Optix system is offered as a single channel for connecting to one antenna or in a dual channel package for diversity antenna systems. The Install Package includes wall or rack mountable flanges and the Live Package includes a hard-shell carrying case. Both options include 10’ BNC to SMA adapter cables for connecting to antennas and wireless rack equipment; 9V screw-on power supplies are also provided. VARIA Fills Calvary Chapel with Exquisite Sound

Chattanooga, TN – March 2014…Leaving a rental space for a place of their own was a big step for  Calvary Chapel. Their new campus sits amongst the hustle and bustle of downtown Chattanooga, close to restaurants, hotels, shops and grocery stores, making Calvary Chapel now a visible and accessible part of the community.

In fact, Calvary Chapel’s new home is a converted Bi-Lo grocery store, reminiscent of its former self through the concrete floor and open corrugated metal ceiling. Folding this industrial edge into their contemporary approach, Calvary Chapel cleared the columns and raised the roof, opening up the 100 by 100 square foot space and adding a bit of acoustical treatment to the side walls.

The space seats 750-800 people, in typical fan shaped sanctuary seating, with one center aisle and two on either side. The services are always packed, from Saturday night praise band to late Sunday morning service, where they have an extra 150-200 people in overflow areas, connected via fiber.

Their contemporary services, complete with amplified instruments, fit well into this unique, industrious and sleek aesthetic. Making it sound as good as it looks, with hard surfaced, square dimensions, was a whole other issue; one that couldn’t be solved with a one-size-fits-all solution.

“It was pretty rough when they moved in there three or four years ago,” says Tracy Miller of Chattanooga-based DB Technologies. Calvary Chapel called Miller in for a consultation about a year ago, needing his help in taming and utilizing this new space. Miller had previously demoed the Renkus-Heinz PN102 line arrays in the space, but quickly realized he needed a different approach. “With the liveliness of this particular room, a traditional line array wasn’t the right thing. There was just too much sound bouncing around that place.”

What Miller and Calvary Chapel needed was a line array that could be tailored to fit their needs precisely; from rock bands to sermons, without allowing the square, hard barriers of the Chapel to shape the sound. “I had been wanting to try out the VARIA and this seemed like a good opportunity,” Miller says. “We set up a demo, and it was just night and day. With the VARIA array, we were able to taper the coverage and focus the sound on the seating area, without hitting all those walls and reflective surfaces.”

With left and right three-cabinet arrays of narrow, transitional and wide dispersion boxes, VARIA also fits in well with the pre-existing design of the space, complementing both the industrial and the sleek aesthetics. And, says Miller, the dramatic shift in sound quality made the job easier, even for the Chapel’s new sound guy. “He’s been just getting up to speed on the Roland M400 console, and he usually asks a lot of questions. But we went from nobody in the room to a packed house and it was so smooth, I did not have to go to the console even once.”

Miller recalls, “after the first service, I got a text: ‘we want to keep these.’ And I had the feeling that would be the case.”

DANLEY JERICHO HORNS FILL 2200-SEAT FIRST REDEEMER CHURCH WITH STUDIO-QUALITY SOUND

CUMMING, GEORGIA: For a long time, First Redeemer Church in Cumming, Georgia didn’t have a purpose-built sound reinforcement system for its stunning 2,200-seat sanctuary. The contemporary band that rocked the morning service, as well as the orchestra and two-hundred-plus voice choir that supported the traditional service, played through the repurposed remnants of a sound reinforcement system that had once serviced their converted warehouse where the church first started. Years of band-aids and add-ons averted disaster, but the room was so unevenly covered that a foot in either direction was often significantly different, with obvious phasing in the travel. Now, a pair of Danley Sound Labs’ most powerful point-source boxes, Danley Jericho J1-94s, deliver stunning stereo imaging with abundant low-end support from a beefy Danley BC-415 subwoofer flown in the center of the room. “First Redeemer now has the best sounding sanctuary in the world,” averred Scott Oliver, owner of Centerline Audio Visual of Hendersonville, Tennessee. “I would put it up against any other system, at any price!”

Oliver designed and installed the system, with custom rigging and fly-ware by Diekhoff Company (Nashville, Tennessee). “My philosophy is always to use as few speakers as possible,” said Oliver. “There’s less destructive interference and fewer alignment issues. Instead of using more speakers for a larger room, I prefer to use larger speakers. A lot of people think I’m nuts for designing Danley Jericho Horns into this, but the results say otherwise. The Jericho offers stunning detail and clarity. It’s very accurate – like a giant studio monitor. With two of them, the stereo imaging is vivid, and it is easy to pick out each and every instrument on stage. Even sitting in the balcony, you can hear the snares rattling and different hi-hat velocities. And even though it’s been said a billion times, it’s still true: Danley’s pattern control is unbelievable. The coverage at First Redeemer is remarkably even.”

In addition to the two Danley J1-94 loudspeakers and the BC-415 subwoofer, a pair of Danley SH-69s provide down-fill for the first few rows and a pair of Danley SH-46s provide side-fill. An existing Digidesign Venue console is still in use and feeds a pair of Danley DSLP-48 processors. Three new Danley EDA 12k and four new EDA 4.8k amplifiers power the system “We did a shoot-out with a number of high-end commercial amplifier manufacturers, and the Danleys had the most consistent measured RMS power level,” said Oliver. “Moreover, I like that they are just straightforward amplifiers – no crazy bells and whistles. The whole system embodies the same sort of simplicity – just a couple of processors, 52,000 watts, a handful of (large) loudspeakers, and one massive subwoofer!”

First Redeemer had originally considered purchasing a line array system from another super high-end loudspeaker manufacturer. “We did an entire design and brought in a system to test,” explained Jeff Baggett, First Redeemer’s audio engineer and a Nashville mastering engineer. “It sounded great, and I was skeptical that Danley would be able to touch it. Scott [Oliver] brought over a pair of the Danley Jericho Horns and powered them up. Immediately it was game over. The Danleys ate the other system for lunch. They were tremendously even and had no finger lobes at all. We even matched the EQ curve of the other system to try and make it a fair fight, but the Danleys still killed it. Now that the system is properly installed and voiced for the room, it’s even better. I love it. It’s the kind of sound that makes you want to just bring in some music and listen. The reproduction is so accurate that I could easily master an album on the system. It’s that good. And the subs are just incredible.”

“The very first song we pulled up had no EQ or processing, but already the new Danley system sounded 3,000-times better than the old system that they had been trying to perfect for sixteen years,” said Oliver. “By the time we where on song three, it sounded like a record. The mix was expansive and rich. When we went to the traditional service, Baggett was mixing sixty channels of audio, and anyone in the congregation could easily distinguish each one of those instruments. The church was also impressed by the price tag for this world-class sound system. It was about one quarter the price of the original line array that they had considered!”

So we recently got a StudioLive 24.4.2 console for the sanctuary, and it’s dramatically changed the way we create and record our music.”

Hess says the StudioLive has enabled them to radically streamline their live service production. “The processing power in the StudioLive is equal to several times the outboard gear we had before — we can have a compressor and effects on every channel if we need to. Plus we were able to remove a whole rack of gear from Front of House. And the ability to save full snapshots of everything has done amazing things for our workflow.”

As has the ability to record the entire mix, he observes. “We use Capture to record a multitrack of our live service. With a volunteer staff, it’s great because when you are training a new sound guy you can use it to show them how to run the console, how to add effects, what different things sound like. And you’re doing it in an empty room, without the pressure of a live service.”

In fact, he adds, it’s a useful thing even for a more experienced mixer. “I’m usually on stage playing, and working with a Capture session gives me a chance to get familiar with the board, so I know what to ask for when I need something. It’s also great for rehearsals — we use it to control the mix from the stage, which enables us to schedule rehearsals without having to have a sound guy present.”

Not surprisingly, those Capture sessions have seeded other creative projects as well. “We load the files into Studio One and do some additional production, add instruments and do some sweetening to the tracks,” he says. “You can do some amazing things in Studio One.”

The sanctuary is outfitted with Renkus-Heinz TRX81 and TRX62H two way loudspeakers, powered by Crest and Crown amplification. A Hear Back personal monitoring system drives the musicians’ in-ear systems. And Hess reports he’s also picked up an AudioBox USB to use when playing tracks and loops from his laptop on stage.

Meanwhile, he says, the AudioBox 1818VSL has continued to be a workhorse on its own. “We’ve been using the AudioBox 1818 VSL in our Fellowship hall. It’s enabled us to add a 16-input interface in there, with no fuss and no setup woes. Sometimes we do video projects, and the Audiobox 1818VSL makes a great portable setup we can take anywhere. And I’m already thinking about how we can use it when we do retreats. I can basically set it all up for them here, configure it all the way they will be using it, and they can take it with them and not have to worry about needing a sound guy.”

Hess concludes, “for a smaller church like ours, PreSonus gear has really given us an edge. It’s affordable, it’s easy to use, and it gives us access to the kind of technology that only the really big churches used to be able to afford.”

Classic St. Louis Church Trades 12 For 1 with Iconyx

Florrisant, MO – March 2014… One of the first settlements in what would become the State of Missouri, Florrisant was founded in the 18th century by French settlers. Until the late 19th century, French was the village’s predominant language — except for a small population of German settlers in the southern part of town. Seeking a church that spoke their language, in 1866 a handful of those German families founded the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

The church’s grand old Gothic style sanctuary has been a landmark on Jefferson Street since 1893. The 600 seat hall was designed in the spirit of the great cathedrals, with soaring walls, stone floors, high arched ceilings, and ornate stained glass windows. It’s a lush, reverberant setting for choir and organ, but problematic for spoken word intelligibility.

“Although it’s not a large room, its acoustical character is very much like that of a cathedral,” explains Gary Haselhorst, President of Valley Park, MO-based Cignal Systems. “Their issues are similar to that of a cathedral, on a smaller scale — it’s a very reverberant space, and intelligibility suffers.” The church’s previous sound system, with 12 pillar-mounted cabinets, only added to the cacophony.

Cignal removed the existing speakers and replaced them with a single Iconyx digitally steered line array column from Renkus-Heinz. “We had recently used the Iconyx in the St. Louis Basilica, and when the monsignors heard how well it worked in the cathedral, they knew there was hope for theirs as well.”

A single IC24-R-II column is mounted on a front pillar, just left of the altar. “We were able to achieve very uniform coverage with just one speaker,” says Haselhorst. “We ordered the cabinet painted to match the brickwork, and the Monsignor’s sister painted some marbled accents on it. It blends in almost invisibly with the architecture.”

Haselhorst reports the system has solved the room’s intelligibility problems and more. “They run the praise band through the Iconyx as well, and it sounds great,” he says. “We took out twelve speakers and replaced them with one Iconyx. They’re very pleased.”
