Mackie and CCI Bring Audio Salvation to Acoustically Challenged Life Church

Woodinville, WA — August 2013… CCI Solutions has a well-deserved reputation for creative solutions to challenging spaces. So it’s not surprising that the Olympia, WA-based AV design firm is behind the unique installation at Life Church in nearby Oak Harbor, featuring a 360-degree all-Mackie audio system.

With multiple weekly services hosting a growing membership approaching 900, Life Church recently completed an expansion project that includes a new multi-purpose youth facility. Housed in a futuristic looking geodesic dome, the youth center is designed as a circular worship space with integrated audiovisual system and seating for 150.

“This was an unusual space that presented some unique acoustical challenges,” explains Rick Boring, Sr. Systems Consultant for CCI Solutions. “The structure had been built several years ago but was never completed, and was uninhabitable. The room itself is circular, so every single interior wall is angled. Configuring it with traditional theater seating would have presented some coverage problems, and the need to go with a curved video screen, which would be expensive.”

CCI’s simple and effective solution was to design a space with 360-degree seating. A small, slightly elevated stage at the room’s hub is built around a single center truss that holds four Mackie HD series loudspeakers and four LCD displays.

“The youth pastor conducts the service from the center stage, while the rest of the band is on another small stage an alcove off to one side,” says Boring. “And depending on how the room is configured, the band alcove can sometimes wind up behind the seating area.”

“Placing the speakers in the center was the easiest and most cost-effective way to ensure good, consistent coverage,” Boring adds. “Plus, everyone is watching the worship leader on the center stage, and reading the text on the screens above him. Having the sound emanate from the middle of the room simply makes the most sense.”

The main loudspeaker cluster consists of four Mackie HD1531 powered 15-inch 3-way systems. The speakers are mounted vertically above the LCD displays and angled down toward the seating areas.

“The Mackie HD1531 offers great sound quality and versatility for the money,” Boring remarked. “With a challenging job like this, where space and budget are important, the HD1531 delivers a tremendous amount of clean output and bandwidth. So when the kids want to rock they can do it no problem. They’re fully powered, so we didn’t have to worry about outboard amps, and they’ve got more than enough low end for this space, so they don’t need a sub.”

For mixing duties Boring specified a Mackie DL1608 digital live mixer with iPad control. In addition to the band, inputs include a wireless microphone system for the youth pastor, as well as a Denon recording and playback system. The Mackie DL1608 provides outputs for mains as well as monitors, and handles 100% of the system DSP.

“The DL1608 is absolutely perfect for a job like this,” says Boring. “It’s really simple to use, has excellent processing power already onboard, and packs plenty of I/O for its size.”

The “keep it simple” mindset extends beyond all things audio to the video system as well. Beneath the four Mackie HD series loudspeakers are four 65-inch LCD displays. Signal is provided by a Mac Mini computer running ProPresenter software. Four separate Xbox 360 consoles are each coupled to the four screens for rowdy, eye-to-eye multi-player sessions.

While technology may be their passion, the team at CCI Solutions will ultimately cite customer satisfaction as their highest priority. For Life Church, Boring is especially pleased with the finished product.

“We care about these churches and we want to help them communicate their message,” concludes Boring. “I worked very closely with Life Church’s Sr. Pastor from the very beginning of this project. He’s very pleased with the final result and that’s exactly what we strive for.”

HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT ST. JOHN’S CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH BUILDS NEW SANCTUARY, INSTALLS DANLEY

SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS: Originally known as “Free Church” when it was founded in 1848, St. John’s Congregational Church in Springfield, Massachusetts is one of the nation’s oldest predominantly African-American churches, and its history is intertwined with the history of advancing human rights in the United States. One of its founding members was a personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, and John Brown, abolitionist and hero of Harper’s Ferry, was a member when he lived in Springfield. St. John’s Congregational Church served as a busy stop on the Underground Railroad, and over the years the church has enjoyed visits from luminaries such as Sojourner Truth, James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, and Jesse Jackson. Membership swelled in the 21st Century, prompting the church to raise funds for a new 800-seat sanctuary on property across the street from its existing, 100-year old building. Recently completed, the new sanctuary features a Danley Sound Labs sound reinforcement system that delivers precise intelligibility and soul-moving bass.

“St. John’s Congregational Church has a high-energy contemporary music program, and they wanted a sound reinforcement system that would really support and extend that aspect of their services,” explained Victor Puddy, chief engineer with dB Audio & Video. Getting it exactly right was so important that the church officials sought recommendations for integration firms from friends around the country. Georgia-based dB Audio & Video came highly recommended, and a small contingent of church officials flew down to Gainesville to meet with the folks at dB Audio & Video and to tour some of their local installations. They were impressed and hired the firm to design and install the new sound reinforcement system. To minimize time away from home and family, dB Audio & Video technicians pre-fabricated as much of the system as possible in their Georgia shop.

“To meet their needs, we had to design a sound system with great intelligibility, musicality, and low-end extension – even and especially at high SPLs,” said Puddy. “They wanted to feel the grooves of their seven-piece contemporary band, not just hear them. Danley Sound Labs loudspeakers deliver superior speech intelligibility, and their exceptional pattern control keeps energy on the congregation and away from the walls. Of course, the low end from Tom Danley’s subwoofer designs is phenomenal.” A single Danley SH-96 mounted at the ceiling above the stage covers most of the seats, and a pair of Danley SH-60s on either side provide fill. A Danley SH-100 mounted behind the SH-96 and facing the opposite direction covers the choir. Two Danley TH-115 subwoofers mounted on the floor deliver generous bass.

An Allen & Heath GLD-80 digital mixer (paired with a digital snake for the stage and a second digital snake for wireless microphone receivers and playback devices) provides a flexible and recallable front end. A dozen Shure ULX wireless microphones guarantee excellent reception and fidelity at the sound source. Output from the mixer feeds a Danley Sound Labs DSLP-48 signal processor, which in turn feeds RMX 450 and 1850 amplifiers. A new Panasonic HD video system complements the sound reinforcement system. High-definition cameras capture video of the service from different angles and distances and project them on two screens behind the stage, and to one on the back wall for the choir. In addition, the HD video signal is distributed throughout the building.

“They’ve been using the new system for several weeks now, and it would seem that everybody is in love with it,” said Puddy. “They were especially impressed by the even coverage and the tremendously deep and clear bass response.”

Esteemed Cleveland Church Opens a New Chapter with VARIA

Cleveland, OH – August 2013… Roots run deep at Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, a cornerstone of Cleveland community and worship since 1931. Over the years, the church’s pulpit has played host to such luminaries as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, Vice President Al Gore, and TV talk show host Oprah Winfrey.

But this congregation with a strong sense of tradition is equally forward-thinking. The church’s 1,500-seat sanctuary, constructed in 1954, recently underwent an in-depth renovation, enhancing sound and vision with the addition of HD cameras, a switcher, and large-scale video screens, as well as a new Renkus-Heinz VARIA modular point source loudspeaker system.

As Tom George, Director of Installations for installer Eighth Day Sound, explains, the sound reinforcement aspect of the project presented some unique challenges. “Although the exterior of the building has a peaked roof, the sanctuary’s ceiling is flat, and relatively low – only around 25 feet in height. So going with a traditional line array would have created line-of-sight issues. Moreover, we were faced with a 400-pound weight restriction, which made the design even more problematic.”

With a need to ensure musicality for both its traditional gospel choir and plugged-in bands, as well as high intelligibility for all spoken aspects of the program, VARIA’s feature set seemed a good fit for the large, acoustically challenging space. With VARIA’s modular and flexible enclosures, Eighth Day could create a system to deliver the coverage of a traditional line array, but using fewer cabinets, thereby decreasing weight, visual impact, and cost.

The flown system consists of six VAX 101-7/6 (7.5 degree), two VAX101-22/69, and two VAX101-22 912 VARIA loudspeakers. The result is powerful, even coverage across the congregation’s main floor and balcony, from the front rows to the rear wall 100 feet away.

“When we listened to the box, we were convinced,” says George. “VARIA met the challenge – it delivered the coverage we needed, along with the power and performance. It looks great, and it sounds great.”

Olivet’s recent improvements mark Phase One of their in-depth renovation, with improved lighting and Web streaming next on the agenda. Through it all, elevating the live sound experience has been key for the Cleveland church.

“Olivet wants to reach younger people – they understand that the demographic is changing and a more contemporary worship style is a big part of that,” Tom George says. “VARIA was the perfect solution for this congregation’s message and their music.”

Shotoku Serves Up A Win For Tennis Championship Broadcasts

UNIQUE VR TRACKING SYSTEM PROVIDES AUGMENTED REALITY FOR HIGH-PROFILE SPORTING EVENT

Staines, UK – Shotoku Broadcast Systems, a leading international manufacturer of advanced camera support products, recently facilitated the introduction of Augmented Reality (AR) to BBC Sport for its live outside broadcasts of the Wimbledon 2013 tennis championships. Shotoku sales director James Eddershaw announced from the Company’s European headquarters in Staines, UK, that Shotoku provided BBC Sport with two TP-90VR and SX300VR Tracking Pedestal & Head systems for its temporary OB studio during its live outdoor coverage of the Lawn Tennis Championships.

AR was introduced on the first day of the tournament and continued to be used for every studio broadcast throughout the two-week tournament. The level of use and complexity of the graphics adapted as the tournament progressed, right up to the final day. In the UK alone, more than 17m viewers watched the men’s final broadcast.

It was Shotoku’s unique VR tracking technology that made transferring systems more typically found in permanent studio installations, into the temporary OB studio possible. Using highly accurate internal encoders to monitor all moving axes and combine with simple in-studio referencing technology, allowed Shotoku to drastically reduce the time required for installation and calibration.

“We are delighted to have been able to work with BBC Sport to help them deliver AR for the first time at an Outside Broadcast, especially at such a prestigious event as the Wimbledon tennis championships.” said Eddershaw. “We are particularly pleased with the reaction of the camera operators who used the equipment for the first time in an OB environment. Any changes to their normal operation came simply from working with the in-shot graphics, not the equipment.”

Shotoku’s recently introduced SX-300VR virtual tracking EFP head features precise tracking and uncompromised operation. Based on the popular SX300 EFP head, the ergonomic design with decades of extensive VR experience behind it provides a robust, reliable platform for a wide range of camera and lens configurations. The SX-300VR provides high-accuracy, real-time data output with absolutely no loss in manual performance. Like all Shotoku VR systems, the unit combines with the Serial Position Interface (SPI) for frame-synchronized high-resolution data tracking, compatible with all leading VR graphics systems. The head may be simply mounted on a tripod, or for real-time full 3D tracking, one of Shotoku’s VR pedestals such as the lightweight, 3-stage TP-90VR, used in this application. While both are typically employed for a range of studio configurations, the SX-300VR and TP-90VR proved to be robust, flexible and reliable in a challenging OB studio application.
