Park Road and Weta Join Christie to Improve High Frame Rate (HFR) Digital Cinema Presentations Through Technology Co-Operation

Christie® has signed a technology co-operation agreement with Park Road Post Production Ltd. (“Park Road”) and Weta Digital Ltd. (“Weta”) to work together to advance the state of the art of digital cinema production and projection, with an emphasis on high frame rate (HFR) delivery – the industry’s most exciting new technology. For its part, Christie will supply a combination of ‘direct to engineering’ technical support, Christie Solaria® Series DLP Cinema® projectors and early access to prototype projection technologies, including laser projectors, that Christie is developing.

As part of the agreement, Park Road and Weta will upgrade their current facilities with Christie projectors and provide Christie with review, testing and feedback on new hardware and software developments related to high-bandwidth interfaces and HFR technology, as well as sample movie content (consistent with the content owner’s permission) for Christie to use in testing its projectors and integrated media block (IMB) units.

Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas Launches Boothless Projection System With Christie Managed Services

Less is more for the Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas in San Diego, where Christie Managed Services has implemented cost effective boothless projection systems, powered by low-maintenance Christie digital cinema projectors, the most powerful and most trusted name for exhibitors joining the digital revolution. Boothless systems eliminate the need for traditional projectionist booth space and require no human operator.

Located in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center in Carmel Valley, Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas features two traditional auditoriums and six with boothless projection systems, seating up to 74 guests, 3D and surround sound technologies, reserved seating options, and high back reclining leather chairs for the ultimate in viewing comfort. Designed and installed by Christie Managed Services as part of a complete customized solution, the boothless systems free up space for an additional row of seating that would normally have been taken up by the projection booths. Christie provided an all-inclusive, turnkey solution for a special lift system that enables the Christie CP2220 DLP Cinema® projectors to be positioned out of the way during normal operation and lowered for maintenance. The Managed Services Team at Christie also installed the audio system, screens, processing equipments, lighting, drapes, library management systems, playback and projection systems, in addition to designing and deploying the boothless capability. Recently, an additional six auditoriums were installed with Christie boothless projection systems at the Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas La Costa location in Carlsbad.

Christie Hosts Cinema Industry Heavyweights at First-Ever High Frame Rate (HFR) Laser Projection Demo

Christie® hosted a high frame rate (HFR) Summit yesterday at Christie’s worldwide center for engineering, research and development in Kitchener, Ontario, touring cinema-industry luminaries through its manufacturing facility and providing the first-ever laser projection of high frame rate cinema and alternative content on to a 30-foot white screen.

Recent Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award winner Douglas Trumbull, Ian Bidgood, Technical Director, Park Road Post Production; Matt Cowan, Chief Scientific Officer, RealD; John Helliker and Bert Dunk, Directors at the Screen Industries Research and Training Centre and Demetri Portelli, Stereographer met with Christie engineering and product development staff for a vibrant information sharing session and discussion on high frame rates, laser projection, and the future of 3D and 4K projection.

“Our guests were very impressed with our demonstration of high-frame rate content using one of our prototype laser projectors,” said Don Shaw, senior director, Product Management, Christie Entertainment Solutions, “as well as the laser projector development roadmap we shared in these frank discussions.”

The consensus of the assembled industry experts was that the industry needs to differentiate itself from the plethora of varied viewing options, from tablets to home theaters and all manner of exhibitor setups, to raise itself out of its current malaise.

CHD 1812 – HDMI to SDI Converter + Frame Sync (3G)
This HDMI to SDI converter supports SD/HD/3G-SDI formats, provides 3D support, and includes an integrated Frame Synchronizer. A flexible reference input allows the unit to be cross-locked between formats. With this brick, facilities can convert HDMI to HD or SD-SDI such as sources coming from broadcast video cameras as well as PC and MAC computers.

A key feature of this yellobrik is the built-in frame synchronizer, which eliminates the need to purchase a separate and expensive 3Gbit frame sync unit. It is an ideal solution for any application that requires a fully synchronized SDI input from an external asynchronous HDMI source.

The integrated frame synchronizer solves a common problem in broadcast and video HDMI to SDI (PC and MAC) conversion applications. In a production environment in the USA, a 59.94 Hz frame rate is typical for SDI video applications and often, an HDMI output runs at 60 Hz. The integrated frame synchronizer adjusts for this minor difference, providing users with a perfectly frame synchronized 59.94 Hz SDI output from a 60 Hz HDMI source.

CHD 1802 – HDMI to SDI Converter (3G)
This HDMI to SDI converter carries the same features as the CHD 1812 however does not include an integrated frame synchronizer or external audio output.

CDH 1811 – SDI to HDMI Converter (3G)
This SDI to HDMI converter supports SDI video inputs up to 1080p60 and provides automatic input standard and format detection.

Full Audio Support
The CHD 1812 and CDH 1811 include full audio support and embed audio from the HDMI stream into the SDI outputs with two external analog audio inputs. The audio inputs can be embedded if required. The CHD 1802 supports embedded audio, whereby any audio present in the HDMI stream will be embedded into the corresponding channels on the SDI output.

Fiber Capabilities
The optional single-mode SDI fiber output ensures that the transition to fiber is simple and makes these units ideal for long distance SDI transmission of HD content.

SDI Monitoring and Overlay Modes

The CDH 1811 includes a unique on-screen overlay mode that displays a multitude of additional information about the connected signal including: SDI input format and bit depth, burn-in windows for DVITC,VITC and LTC time code, 16 channel on- screen audio metering, closed caption presence indication and AFD,WSS and VI metadata presence. This overlay feature turns the CDH 1811 SDI to HDMI converter is a fully featured SDI monitoring tool.

James Cameron’s Titanic 3D World Premiere Projected by Christie Duo Solution at Royal Albert Hall

In co-operation with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment, Inc., Christie® supplied its Christie Duo™ dual-projector solution to bring the bright, vivid scenes of Titanic in 3D to life at its world premiere last week at The Royal Albert Hall.

Dixon High School Reaches New Level Of Education With XPAND 3D Technology

HOLLY RIDGE, North Carolina – Dixon High School, part of the Onslow County School District in North Carolina, is realizing the benefits of learning in 3D with the help of XPAND 3D. Dixon High School recently purchased XPAND systems to provide a more engaging learning experience for its students in subjects like Biology, where 3D content offers greater depth and detail.

Dixon High School purchased XPAND 3D Educational products through Skylink with the help of Andy Canady, President of Skylink. XPAND 3D’s Educational Kit includes XPAND DLP®-Link 3D Glasses (which work seamlessly with all 3D-ready DLP projectors) and a library full of educational 3D content for every subject.

Jason Chambers, Biology Teacher at Dixon High School, is quite pleased with the results that he has seen since he started using the 3D material in October 2011. He has employed XPAND’s 3D content, including Designmate 3D technology, in almost all of his instruction, whether it is an introduction before diving into a new subject, teaching the subject itself or even as a refresher after a section is completed.

“It’s been a dream using the software. It not only helps the kids but the teachers are also enjoying it, especially when they see the test results. In General Biology alone there has been a more than 50 percent improvement in test scores. Our Principal is ecstatic,” Mr. Chambers said.

In North Carolina, a student has to score a level 3 (mastery of concepts) or 4 (superior understanding and clearly proficient in concept) on a statewide testing exam to be considered efficient. All classes taught by Mr. Chambers including those with EC students received 100 percent proficiency using the 3D material. In an Honors class taught by Mr. Chambers, he had 12 students score 4 in a class of 21 students. “Those types of scores are unheard of!” Mr. Chambers added. “Normally I’m lucky to get four or five 4’s in a class of 30 students, so the numbers speak for themselves.”

“The content overlaps seamlessly with our core curriculum,” Mr. Chambers said. “All the videos are under 10 minutes long so they don’t take away from my lesson plans either, they just significantly add value.”

Not only does the 3D content engage students on a higher level than Mr. Chambers has ever seen, but he also feels that high level of engagement translates into greater comprehension and retention of the information presented. “Students are grasping the material much quicker than with traditional methods,” Mr Chambers said.

Mr. Chambers noted that the 3D content is ideal for subjects like Biology, where 3D content showing DNA, mitosis or cell division can help explain the concept better than a 2D picture. “Being able to fly through a cell and watch the actual process as it happens is amazing,” he said.

Where students often get restless when a video is being played, Mr. Chambers noticed the opposite effect with the presentation of 3D content. “I can hear a pin drop in the room when we’re watching a 3D video. Kids are attentive and focused and actually entertained by what they are watching. I had never seen that before,” he said.

According to Mr. Chambers, even the quality of XPAND’s active-shutter 3D technology is apparent to the students. “The kids even enjoy it more than the passive 3D they see in the movie theater,” he noted. “They recognize the difference of the active technology that XPAND 3D uses and how it eliminates strain on the eyes and headaches. I explain the differences in the technology to them and show how the light enters the eyes differently. It’s a lesson within itself.”

“3D has been a tremendous asset for me,” Mr. Chambers concluded. “I don’t have to change the way I teach, I’ve had outstanding results with the content and I feel confident that the students are absorbing what I am teaching.”
