PreSonus Tames the Loudest Hole in Golf

Scottsdale, AZ – April 2014… With a history dating back to the 1930s, the Phoenix Open is one of pro golf’s most celebrated events. Now known as the Waste Management Phoenix Open, the tournament has hosted some of the biggest names in the game, from Arnold Palmer, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Ben Crenshaw to Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh, and Tiger Woods.

In 1987, the Open moved to its current home at the world-renowned TPC Scottsdale golf course. The course was custom designed for the tournament and is best known for the 16th hole of its Stadium Course. It has often been referred to as “the loudest hole in golf”; during the tournament, its amphitheater-style seats are packed with crowds of exuberant fans and spectators who cheer and jeer loudly as the pros play through.

David Eriksson, CEO of Phoenix-based Church Technologies, is a volunteer with the Phoenix Thunderbirds, a prominent civic organization that has supported the Open throughout its storied history, raising millions of dollars for Phoenix-area charities. Eriksson, who has lent his audio skills to the event for close to a decade, explains the challenges behind the 16th hole.

“It’s always been a bit of a crazy event, and by the time the players get through to hole 16, they’re nearing the end of their game, and things are loosening up,” he observes. “But it’s still a regulation game, and the PGA has some pretty stringent regulations regarding noise. The challenge is to find just the right balance of being heard over the crowd without overpowering the game.”

Eriksson found the solution a few months before this year’s Open. “We did an event last December as part of the Shane and Shane tour, and I got to hear the new PreSonus® StudioLive™ AI loudspeakers,” he recalls. “I just loved the way they sounded, and I thought it would be great to try them out at the Open.”

Four systems were brought in to cover the 16th hole, each comprising three StudioLive 328AI Active Integration™ loudspeakers and a StudioLive 18sAI subwoofer. “We had one system in the Chairman’s Club, another in the bar area, and two more on the crowd,” says Eriksson. “The sound was just wonderful—the system had such amazing clarity.”

For next year’s Open, Eriksson plans on bringing in a StudioLive AI-series digital console, too, to take full advantage of Active Integration. “I’m really excited about being able to control the mix from an iPad,” he enthuses. “I can be down in the tee box and hear what the players are hearing. That’s an amazing advantage.”

“This is one of the biggest events in professional golf, and getting the sound right is a big part of it,” Eriksson concludes. “PreSonus has pretty much everything we need, from the console to the speakers, and it’s all fully integrated to work together. It’s a great fit.”

Imperial Russian Ballet Gets Royal Sound with Renkus-Heinz

Ljubljana, Slovenia – April 2014… In the heart of Slovenia’s capital city, Park Tivoli is a lush urban oasis that is home to the renowned International Center of Graphic Arts, as well as the Museum of Contemporary History. The Park is also home to Hala Tivoli, one of the region’s largest sporting and event halls.

Recently, the Hala Tivoli’s 4500 seat basketball venue hosted a performance of Labodje Jezero (Swan Lake) by the acclaimed Imperial Russian Ballet, drawing a full house and numerous national and international dignitaries. Audio for the event was provided by leading tour providers Akustika Pirman, who brought in a system based on Renkus-Heinz PN-Series line array loudspeakers. As Systems Engineer Metod Komatar explains, the system was exactly what was needed for the venue.

“The Hala Tivoli actually has pretty good acoustics for a sporting arena, and it’s possible to get a reasonably good sound in the room,” says Komatar. “The biggest challenge is the height of the left and right seating areas, and how to cover it consistently using a relatively small number of loudspeakers.”

The main system, designed by Komatar and director Joze Pirman, comprises four flown arrays — two left and two right — each with six PN102 line array cabinets. Six DRS18-2B subwoofers covered low frequency reinforcement. Four TRX151 full range cabinets provide front fill for the first few rows, with two more TRX151 boxes onstage as side fills for the artists. The system was powered by Crown and lab.gruppen amplification, with a Xilica XD4080 unit for system DSP.

“We have used Renkus-Heinz systems for many years, because they always fulfill our needs perfectly, through many different types of events,” adds Komatar. “The PN102 line arrays deliver a nice wide dispersion that enabled us to consistently cover a large area with a small number of speakers. The Renkus-Heinz system proved itself once again, with a very natural sound and plenty of headroom, which is critical for classical music.”

Yamaha NUAGE Version 1.5 Announced Today

LAS VEGAS—In response to an overwhelmingly positive reaction, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. has announced Version 1.5 software of the NUAGE Advanced Production System. Available in May via free download, the new version will allow remote control of R Series audio interface head amplifiers from NUAGE Fader/Master control surfaces. In addition to providing a broader selection of I/O options for NUAGE systems, the software also allows Yamaha CL Series Digital Mixing Console inputs to be shared via a Dante network for significant system expansion capability.

Although NUAGE already allows switching between up to three different DAWs, with V1.5 the “NUAGE PT Bridge” driver for Avid Pro Tools control gains OSX 10.9 compatibility so that Pro Tools running on Mac platforms is fully supported. Also, adding Quick Control to the NUAGE Master unit, specified parameters can be assigned to the multi-function display so the user has even greater customization control. The NUAGE Master unit now has the ability to instantly access a vast range of VST instruments from the display and knobs for more efficient, effective sound crafting. The multi-function knobs will also provide as much as 512 times finer control than has been available in the Fine Mode.

DPA Microphones Helps Steve Browell Capture Unique Car Sounds

Recording audio for film and TV within the confines of a car is hard enough, but actually capturing the sheer range of sounds that comprise car noise is an entirely different level of challenge. This, however, is something of a specialty for freelance sound effects editor Steve Browell who uses a range of DPA microphones and a variety of techniques to achieve spectacular results.

Browell, whose recent projects have included recording sound effects for Scarlett Johansson’s latest film Under the Skin, directed by Jonathan Glazer, says: “What I love about the job is that it’s so varied. From enhancing the physical sounds on screen to bringing inanimate objects to life; from designing effects to add to the emotion of the story to recording original sounds for each film, there is always a new challenge.”

Browell’s work involves many different locations, from race-tracks to mansion houses, from anechoic chambers to scrap yards. With him go a matched pair of DPA’s d:dicate™ 4011C Compact Cardioid Recording Microphones and a selected pair of d:screet™ 4061 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones, which were supplied by DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network. Browell also owns a pair of d:dicate 4021 Compact Cardioid Recording Microphones in an DPA X/Y setup that have been customised to fit into a Rycote windshield.

“I have always liked the sound DPA microphones capture,” he says. “When I started my career I was involved in a lot of music recording and I can remember the first time I used a pair of DPA d:dicate 4011s when they were still Brüel and Kjaer. I loved the amazingly detailed and natural sound they were able to capture; it was like hearing the sound from the live source again. From then on I have always wanted to own my own pair.”

Browell first started experimenting with car recordings when he was asked to capture car sounds for a film he was working on. “Cars are fascinating machines that create a symphony of sound,” he says. “Also I liked the physical challenge of where and how to place microphones on a moving vehicle and still get a decent sounding recording with as little vibration and wind buffeting as possible.”


He explains that much of the action in Under the Skin takes place in the interior of a Mercedes Sprinter van. “To get a really authentic sound and the right coverage I spent a day recording the van with a multi-mic setup covering different aspects of the interior, the engine and the exhaust.”

Browell has been able to hone his techniques, not to mention widen the library of different cars he has captured, with work on the Need for Speed computer game franchise. As he says, though, it’s a delicate balance between the shielding stopping wind noise and it starting to colour the source sound.

“I also had to find materials that would withstand the high temperatures and a few Rycote windshields got burnt in the process,” he explains. “The McLaren MP4 12c was particularly bad for this; on overrun you can get a flame of three foot out of the exhaust. It can also be a problem fixing the microphones onto the cars and not damaging the paint and bodywork, which is important when some of them are valued at over $1m. Each car’s shape is so different and I need to be extremely flexible with my methods to get the microphones into a sweet spot: out of the direct airflow around the car but also avoiding some of the high temperatures and trying to dampen some of the vibration.”

For the future he says he would definitely like to own more DPA microphones, but adds that remembering petrol helps, too…

New Zealand’s Māori Television Upgrades Its Broadcast Facility with HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 M3 and OnAir Consoles

NEWMARKET, New Zealand – Māori Television provides a range of local and international programming for New Zealand’s audiences across the country and online. Founded in 2004, the station is dedicated to the revitalization and normalization of the Māori language and culture through high-quality, readily accessible programming in both Māori and English. Reflecting its commitment to quality, Māori Television recently upgraded its studios with the addition of HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5 M3 and OnAir 2500 digital consoles.

HARMAN Professional New Zealand distributor Jands Ltd. installed the 32-fader Vista 5 M3 and 12-fader OnAir 2500 consoles in Māori Television studios. The studio needed to replace its aging analogue mixing desks and make the move to digital. They wanted consoles that were flexible and easy to use. “Our studios are used for a variety of shows, including live news and current affairs programs, talk shows, sports programming and more,” said Kane Dickie, sound team leader. “One of the most challenging requirements is doing the sound for a live music show that requires mixing multiple hosts talking at once plus a live band.”

Māori Television wanted to avoid having to patch the consoles into external effects devices, and chose the Studer consoles because they had enough built-in effects to handle all the processing for all the shows that are produced at Māori Television. Ease of use was equally important – “we wanted consoles that were intuitive to use, so that most of the people in our studio would be able to operate them.” In addition, the consoles had to be able to link together so they could share sources between Māori Televisions two broadcast studios. The Vista 5 M3 offers access of up to 240 channels, ensuring the station would have all the inputs it needs. Along with the Vista 5 M3 and On Air 2500, Māori Television purchased three Studer Compact Stagebox expansion units, a 32-in/16-out and two 16-in/16-out models.

Before Māori TV purchased them, Jands set up the complete system on their premises to allow Kane and his team to try them out. The Māori TV staff took to the consoles immediately, giving high marks to the consoles’ easy, fast and responsive operation, accessible control layouts, convenient Vistonics™ and Touch’n’Action color touch screens, and variety of useful built-in effects. “

Now that the Vista 5 M3 and On Air 2500 are up and running at Māori Television, Kane confirms their initial positive experience with the consoles at Jands. “The transition from analogue to digital consoles went smoothly. In addition to doing everything we need them to and then some, we’ve noticed that the Studer consoles’ preamps have made all of our mics sound much cleaner. In addition, all of the old analogue buzz we could never get rid of in the past has disappeared.”

Jünger Audio Shows The D*AP4 VAP Voice Processor At NAB 2014

At NAB 2014 (Booth C2134), dynamics processing specialist Jünger Audio will be showing its recently introduced D*AP4 VAP Voice Processor – a unique unit that is designed to make life easier for engineers working in radio stations, TV production voice-over studios and feature film ADR facilities.

What makes this processor so special is the inclusion of Jünger Audio’s proprietary Spectral Signature™ dynamic EQ – a totally new creative tool that offers automatic and dynamic EQ control to balance spectral differences. By analyzing incoming audio and comparing its spectrum with individually predetermined voice ‘fingerprints’, this clever unit can automatically apply dynamic EQ corrections to give a consistent sound.

For people working in TV voice over and feature film ADR, this facility is a Godsend. Imagine, for example, that you have booked an expensive and well-known actress to voice the cute little rabbit in your new children’s TV series. Over the course of the recording sessions you notice that her voice sounds different at different times of the day – maybe because she is tired, or has developed a sore throat, or has had a heavy night and smoked a lot of cigarettes. If you want your rabbit to sound exactly the same every time, how do you overcome this?

Jünger Audio’s D*AP4 VAP Voice Processor is the answer. On day one you record the actress’ best rabbit voice, and then measure it using Spectral Signature. The voice’s tonal characteristics are analyzed and recorded as a curve on a graph, which is used as a template for all future recordings. The next time your actress does her rabbit voice, the unit compares the new recording to the saved version and automatically adjusts the frequency until both voices match. Voilà! A perfect rabbit voice every time, thus saving a fortune in repeated ADR and voice over sessions, not to mention a lot of frustration on all sides.

Jünger Audio’s D*AP4 VAP Voice Processor is equally interesting to radio broadcasters who want to create an aural identity for their radio stations. By using exactly the same spectral sound management principles, the unit measures specific voice recordings and then uses these sound fingerprints as a reference. The Spectral Signature algorithm matches all subsequent live recordings to these fingerprints, thus creating a dedicated ‘station sound’.

DK-Technologies Shows its New DK T7 Audio Meter at NAB 2014

Danish manufacturer DK-Technologies is using the NAB 2014 platform to highlight its new DK T7 Audio and Loudness meter, which will be on show for the first time in the USA (Booth N1201, in conjunction with Ward-Beck).

Launched to enormous critical acclaim at IBC 2013, the ‘everything included’ DK T7 is now shipping with the first units already installed into two Calrec consoles destined for Al Jazeera London.

Designed as a cost-effective, one-box solution for broadcast and post production engineers, the DK T7 incorporates as standard every Audio and Loudness meter function currently offered by the award winning DK Meter range. These functions include Bargraphs, Moving Coil Emulation, DK-technologies’ proprietary StarFish™ and JellyFish™ display technology, FFT spectrum analysis and, of course, industry compliant Loudness and Logging.

The new DK T7 also includes 3G SDI Picture Preview, as well as the ability to read and log against SMPTE time-code – a feature that has only recently been added to the DK Meter range.
