Bexel Connects the Academy Awards(r) with Extensive Fiber Network

Company’s Fiber Optic Infrastructure Eliminates Logistical Challenges for Global Broadcasts

(BURBANK, Calif.) – Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group‘s Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, provided the conduit for the live broadcast of the 86th Academy Awards(r), as well as all of the ancillary global productions from the site, with a logistics-defying fiber infrastructure constructed exclusively for the event. Working with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), Bexel implemented a comprehensive fiber optic network. The customized solution connects multiple production locations beyond the Dolby Theatre, including the Hollywood & Highland Center, the Red Carpet on Hollywood Blvd., Loews Hollywood Hotel, and the domestic and international television compounds located more than a block away behind the El Capitan Theatre.

When AMPAS moved the Oscars to the Dolby Theatre (then the Kodak Theatre) in 2001, they turned to Bexel to help solve the logistical challenges inherent in the new location. Knowing that traditional copper cable would not work, Bexel installed a permanent fiber network that included four miles of multi-strand cables from the Hollywood & Highland and Dolby Theatre complexes, as well as under Hollywood Blvd. That underlying backbone is enhanced each year by Bexel to meet the show’s specific and unique complexities, as the number of feeds changes every year, in addition to the fact that the industry has moved from standard definition to high def over the last decade. The required infrastructure has effectively tripled in size.

For the 86th Academy Awards, more than 17 miles of temporary fiber was also deployed to successfully transport massive amounts of HD/SD video, audio, data and communications signals.

“The structure we put in place has to support so much more than the Oscar broadcast itself,” said Bexel’s Craig Schiller, vice president of engineering and operations. “We’re tasked with enabling point-to-point connections for more than 50 different entities, to ensure live, simultaneous broadcasts of all of the Red Carpet pre-shows, the backstage media and photo rooms, the pre- and post-show programs, Oscar.com, and the official Governors Ball, in addition to the Academy Awards(r) telecast itself.”

The venue does not have one large parking lot to accommodate all of the satellite and production trucks, so the physical footprint of the production areas are spread out into nearby available parking lots, onto Hollywood Blvd, and the Orange Motor Court adjacent to the Dolby Theater. “Our fiber network is really the conduit for the entire production, and it gets larger every year,” Schiller adds.

In addition to the fiber optic infrastructure, Bexel contributed key elements to coverage of the Red Carpet arrivals. The company deployed its RF-Over-Fiber antenna system, which has become a staple of the official pre-show broadcast, to provide unprecedented wireless communications coverage not previously available with a conventional wireless system. Bexel’s RF base camp was located at the 90-degree turn of the Red Carpet, and was used as the head-end position. Multiple RF fiber-site boxes enabled connections for dozens of antennas to ensure there was no loss of signal, as the production staff required a seamless communication system.

The often tight turnaround between the pre-show and the official broadcast is also supported by the system, enabling communication signals to transition from the Red Carpet up into the theatre for the show opening. Bexel also supplied three Sony HDC-2500 cameras, which were used by AMPAS as pool cameras for arrivals, fashion and the main press room. The feeds were then provided by Bexel to domestic and international broadcasters for enhanced show coverage around the world.

To support a live event of this scale, Bexel had a credentialed staff of more than 40 fiber engineers and support technicians onsite. Senior teams arrived two weeks before the show to begin set-up for the main broadcast and to clean and test the permanent fiber network. The majority of the staff arrived the Tuesday before the awards to prepare for the hundreds of domestic and international broadcasters who arrived on Friday.

Live broadcasts from the Red Carpet started as early as Friday morning, and ran continuously until late Sunday night, with Bexel engineers onsite around the clock. The team enabled the transport of 200 video signals, 125 audio signals, and 100 intercom signals over fiber for the Academy’s broadcast partners.

“Our incredible team of professionals really delivers for the Oscars,” says Schiller. “Over the past 13 years, we’ve had a number of the same talented people on the project, and the guys have really gotten to know the location and understand the complexities of this event. We’re able to do so much more in advance now. Most of the fiber demarc racks are preconfigured in our shop and delivered already tested, which increases our efficiency every year. We’ve also upgraded the permanent installations every two to three years, allowing us to minimize what we need to layer on top of the existing infrastructure. It’s a tough few weeks, but our team’s focus and passion for this event enables us to service all of our customers effectively. And in the end, our customer’s successful productions are the only award we need.”

HARMAN Professional and KD’s Southern Cuisine Bring Upscale Dining and Entertainment to Oklahoma City’s Bricktown

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – Bricktown, Oklahoma City’s entertainment district, just got a lot more entertaining with the opening of KD’s Southern Cuisine (www.kdsbricktown.com), an elegant dining establishment that serves up Southern culinary favorites for lunch and dinner – and when it’s late in the evening, transforms into a nightclub with DJs, dancing and live music, all served up through a HARMAN Professional audio system.

The design brief given to Norman, OK system integrator Pro Presenters, LLC and its President/CEO, Steve Patrick, was clear: the ownership group wanted KD’s to have an upscale look and feel, and “New York City club-level audio where we could really push some sound pressure levels.” However, to keep the open, contemporary interior design undisturbed, the sound system had to be completely hidden from view.

KD’s is divided into four areas – dining room, bar, private lounge and patio – and the system had to cover the sonic gamut from subtle background music to live bands and DJs pounding out the volume. In the bar area in particular the owners were insistent upon having dance club-capable SPL, but with so much emphasis placed on the décor, there was no room to hang loudspeakers, let alone large ones. There were also some unique architectural challenges and solutions – including a motorized glass window that runs the length of one wall of the dining room. When the window is closed the bar can get loud while the dining room maintains a lower noise level.

For the bar area, Pro Presenters needed a loudspeaker that could fit into the wall behind the bar while delivering the requisite volume. The company went with 12 JBL AC15 ultra-compact loudspeakers, inset into the framework and placed at a height and in locations to ensure even, unbroken coverage throughout the room. The bar has a floating ceiling, which included a cavity where Patrick and his team had room to install four JBL ASB 6112 compact subwoofers.

Adjacent to the bar is a small performance area for DJs and live bands, where four JBL VRX928LA compact constant curvature loudspeakers and two VRX918S subwoofers are mounted on each side of the stage. “These are perfect for this kind of application,” Patrick noted – “they’re small and don’t get in the way of anything but are full-range and sound really good.” Two more VRX928’s and a VRX918 are located in the private lounge.

The main dining room and two private dining areas (which can be combined into a larger private dining room for bigger affairs) required music that could go from a gentle background level to something louder. Patrick wanted to install loudspeakers in the ceiling but had to work around a number of large circular hanging lighting fixtures. However, the ceiling also had several openings in which additional LED lights were installed – and these openings were also large enough to accommodate 14 JBL Control 26C coaxial ceiling loudspeakers and four Control 19CS in-ceiling subwoofers. In addition, two Control 26C loudspeakers were placed in the ceiling in each of the two private dining rooms, and four Control 28 indoor/outdoor loudspeakers are mounted in the outside patio area.

The loudspeakers are powered by a total of nine Crown amplifiers, a mix of DSi 6000, DSi 2000, CDi 1000, CDi 4000, 280A and 180A models. “These amps just made sense for this installation – their onboard processing enabled us to easily tailor their frequency balance, and other parameters to the loudspeakers, subwoofers and room acoustics. The 280A works in conjunction with a push-to-talk mic in the kitchen so the backline workers in the kitchen can hear what’s going on up front, and the 180A is simply one of the best amplifier values out there,” said Patrick.

A Soundcraft Si Performer digital live sound console handles both lighting and sound for the stage and main dining areas. Patrick chose the Performer because “we felt like it was two consoles in one. One person can do it all – mix the sound for both rooms and control all the lights with onboard DMX-based scene recalls. It’s amazing how much capability is built into this console.” He noted that thanks to the console’s built-in reverb, compression and effects, it also eliminated a lot of rack components they would otherwise have needed in the system.

“The ownership group couldn’t be more pleased with the way the KD’s installation turned out,” Patrick concluded. “The system is completely unobtrusive visually, and perfectly suits KD’s dual requirement for a system that can play quieter music during the day and get everybody dancing at night with sound quality that rivals that of any nightclub.”

CAST Software’s wysiwyg allows Pinnacle to scale new heights with Rudimental

The lighting and stage design for BRIT Award-winning band Rudimental’s recent tour may have been deliberately ‘old school’, but there was nothing old-fashioned about the technology used to create it. Award-winning LD, Jonny Gaskell of Brighton, UK-based Pinnacle Event Productions used R32, the latest version of CAST Software’s wysiwyg previsualization software suite, to give his creativity maximum bandwidth and ensure that what was programmed in theory was deliverable in reality.

Rudimental’s multi-performer approach to their live show meant the band felt there was no need for video in their set design. Instead, they gave Gaskell a brief to create a set reminiscent of an old-school rock festival, with the Hackney Peace Carnival mural as a backdrop that could be lit from behind or in front.

“Lighting was absolutely key to the design,” Gaskell explains. “The rig was based on three overhead trusses and six vertical truss towers on floor bases, with the latter at different heights to draw the audience’s gaze towards the mural. Thanks to wysiwyg, I was able to do a single plot from which I could get rigging points, rendering and programming – something no other software can do.”

Like so many LD’s today, Gaskell does a great deal of work in the corporate-event space as well as in live music touring. Ideas developed for one market often influence designs for the other and, as Gaskell points out: “When you have a tool like wysiwyg, it is just so much easier to convince a client – whether they are a band manager or a corporate account-holder – of the strength of your idea because they get a realistic snapshot of what things will look like.”

Bruce Freeman, Chairman, CAST Group, concludes: “The latest R32 version of wysiwyg takes our class-leading software to a new level, with over 300 library additions and great new features such as the Wall Tool and Room Builder, which make it easier to create scalable props and walls, and produce CAD files of a specific set or room.

“Lighting designers and production professionals the world over continue to rely on wysiwyg, and the major graphics upgrade in version R32 and much more to come in future releases, ensures that our software continues to be the most comprehensive precuing and previsualization tool available in the market today.”

New Endemol Sport Studios Back HARMAN Studer Vista 5 Digital Consoles

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands –Situated at the MediArena in Amsterdam, the new Endemol Sport studios have been equipped with two 42-fader HARMAN Studer Vista 5 digital mixing consoles as part of an innovative production design, involving three studios and three galleries on the same fiber backbone.

The consoles were supplied by Heynen, Studer’s Dutch distributors, and installed by system integrator DutchView. These form the audio control of a sophisticated fit-out initiated by Eredivisie Media & Marketing to mark the start of the 2013-2014 Dutch football season. Three new HD studios and production galleries, dedicated to match-day programming and highlights, have been built and equipped for this purpose.

The project’s primary objectives were to improve both the quality of content contribution across multiple platforms and the overall experience for viewers tuning in to the Fox Sports Eredivisie football pay-TV channels.

Undertaking the conceptual design and specification was a team comprising Victor Winkelhage (head of production Endemol Sport), Jinne Tania (consultant Fox/Eredivisie) and SjaakVreeburg (Resources Manager Endemol). It was Vreeburg who produced the tender document, and later acted as project manager for the construction of the studios.

The aim was to achieve an innovative mix of cutting-edge studio technology and IP-based platforms, with direct access from, and full integration between, technology and editing using Riedel MediorNet media networking.

“We can now handle three different live programmes on three different channels, using one video/audio router for the three studios, one intercom system, Virtual studio manager and other software solutions,” said Vreeburg. “The workflow from EVS is directly streamed to the storage facility. We can start editing instantly on up to 12 sets for direct playback in the studio by IP-directory or file transfer to the Fox play-out facility and master control room in Hilversum.”

The conceptual difference of the sports studios is that the content sits right at the center—not only for TV but also for Internet streaming (and C-Cast) of mobile devices and tablets. “This enables us to deal more with sport and less with technical issues,” Vreeburg added. “The combination of incoming lines and the connection to the Studer mixer and the intercom givers us so much more flexibility.”

The Studer solution was adopted on the recommendation of DutchView, supplier of technical facilities and crew, working with Dutch system integrator D&MS. “We knew the quality and flexibility of Studer’s Vista series and were deliberating between the Vista 1 or Vista 5. Jinne and I visited the Integrated Systems Europe Show to satisfy questions about the MADI router, number of faders and stage boxes, Input/Output boards, de-embedding and routing. Niels [Mijnlieff, product specialist from distributors, Heynenbv] provided all the answers we needed and DutchView advised us to opt for the Vista 5 in view of the configuration required.”

The Studer platform was recommended for its audio quality, ease of setup, control and operation, the analog approach of the console and the experience DutchView has in working with the consoles. “We have lots of trained audio engineers who are extremely familiar with Studer Vista consoles and operating systems,” stated DutchView’s Robert Reparon. “There is also the possible expansion of the system with additional Studer preamp stageboxes from our own stock.”

Although DutchView has historically been the house supplier for Endemol, and supplied the facilities for the Eredivisies Studio (Dutch Premier League League channel) it nevertheless had to participate in a 3-way tender process. Having nominated DutchView, Endemol and Fox then addressed the configuration details—namely to build three complete new studios (designated 4, 5, and 6) each with four cameras and LED lighting, while Studio 5 and 6 each have six projectors for background projection in the set. The two Vista 5 consoles will mix programs in Studio 5 and 6, alongside Grass Valley vision mixers, Vizrt studio and match graphics.

Each Vista 5 is equipped with the SCore Live processor and accompanied by a 6U 19” Input Output Frame, with a Studer D21m 3U I/O Frame, each frame equipped with redundant power supply. This is populated with five SCore Live DSP boards; SCore Live Bridge board; Sync Generator board; GPIO Board; 12 Mic/Line inputs; 16 analog Line inputs; 24 analog Line outputs, eight digital AES/EBU inputs (stereo); eight digital AES/EBU outputs (stereo); MADI I/O board; threeMADI input/output board (Hub) optical with single mode fiber I/O; two HD board for link to DSP core; two 19” 1U Fan units and two 19” 1U air deflection panels; two19” 1U air deflection panels with cable feed-through; Serial Merger Card; Vista 5 System Software; and Configuration Editor software.

All the signals coming from the venues, the master control room and local play out servers are merged into MADI streams via a third-party audio router. Local studio audio sources (such as mics) are patchable directly to the Studer D21 I/O frame.

The configuration was undertaken by DutchView, whose senior engineers also provided operational training, while Heynen commissioned the systems. In addition, the systems integrator also provides two OB vans for covering four soccer matches during a weekend—both equipped with Vista consoles and D21 routing systems.

Summarized Robert Reparon, “All our audio engineers are very satisfied with the Vista setup in the studios. They feel comfortable during the shows and are confident with a system on which they rely.”

And SjaakVreeburg concluded, “There is no comparison between the present configuration and the situation before, with usage of all eight audio channels, the incoming lines, live studio production, commentary positions and playback from EVS via the excellent interface between Riedel and Studer. This has given us greater flexibility, speed, multitasking, fewer faults and a better operation/understanding between directors and audio technicians.”

D-TOOLS TO DEMONSTRATE WORKFLOW-ENHANCING MOBILE QUOTE APP at ISC WEST 2014

Companion app to SIX 2013 enables security systems integrators to remotely generate bids and later import them into D-Tools SIX 2013 for full project design and management.

D-Tools Mobile Quote is a Companion App to D-Tools System Integrator that extended the user's workflow to a mobile environment for onsite consultations.

CONCORD, CA (ISC West 2014 booth #26135) MARCH 26, 2014 D-Tools, Inc., the worldwide leader in system integration software, today announced that the Company will demonstrate its new iOS-based iPad® companion app for its flagship product, SIX 2013 at ISC West April 2-4, 2014 at the Sands Expo in Las Vegas (D-Tools booth #26135). Available now for D-Tools partners worldwide, the new release adds mobile quoting capabilities that enable Commercial and Residential AV integrators to generate quotes natively on an iPad, then import them into the full D-Tools SIX 2013 software platform for further project design and management. Delivering on D-Tools’ commitment to streamline product updates and enhancements by consolidating them into an annual release, this new companion app will immediately extend the highly functional D-Tools workflow to mobile sales and specification teams.

A native iOS application, the D-Tools Mobile Quote app leverages D-Tools’ extensive manufacturer product library by enabling integrators to access and integrate product category and package data from their SIX 2013 catalog while working with customers in the field. Integrators can enter client and contact information into the iPad app, then walk prospective customers through available installation scenarios in order to create a quote for approval. Once complete, the resulting quote can then be imported into SIX 2013 for additional design work and synchronization.

The Mobile Quote app uses many of D-Tools’ workflow concepts, including the specification of locations and systems, which allows integrators to provide packages or pre-configured systems for inclusion in the quote. Labor and general pricing will be calculated to give the customer an accurate proposal, which can then be signed off for approval on the spot.

“Delivering features that enable our users to create quotes in the field is a natural evolution for us. The D-Tools Mobile Quote app is an important component that ensures our platform continues to meet the growing needs of our expanding security customer base,” said Adam Stone, President and Founder of D-Tools. “The Mobile Quote app release is just the beginning. In fact, we are already working on additional mobile capabilities that significantly enhance our product roadmap. As we have demonstrated since the release of SIX last year, our new platform enables us to deploy new features as part of rapid and regular release cycles, which will ultimately provide our customers a clear path for sustained growth. We think ISC West attendees will be excited by the capabilities of this powerful new app. ”

More than 4,500 companies worldwide use D-Tools Systems Integrator Software to streamline the estimation, design, and project management processes associated with the installation and integration of low voltage systems.

HARMAN and Intellitech Systems Take Part In A Detroit Revival at Bistro 82

Left to right: Chadi Shaya (Owner of Intellitech Systems), Andy Combs (Owner of IAV Sales, HARMAN Rep.), Aaron Belen (Owner of Bistro 82 & Sabrage), James Ure (Business Development Manager Eastern Region, HARMAN Professional).

ROYAL OAK, Michigan – Detroit has always been a city of resiliency, and that was resoundingly evident at the Valentine’s Day opening of Bistro 82 in the city’s Royal Oak suburb. Completely remodeled and renovated, the 2-story establishment offers superlative French cuisine in its restaurant while its Sabrage ultra lounge is a chic addition to the area’s nightclub scene. Bistro’s clean, contemporary design is accented by an open, spacious layout with splashes of color and plenty of natural lighting, with an audio system featuring HARMAN’s JBL, Crown and BSS Audio components to complement the world-class food and surroundings.

“This was a complete ground-up remodeling project, which gave us the freedom to perfectly tailor the audio installation to the first floor Bistro 82 restaurant and second floor nightclub,” said Chadi Shaya, owner of Detroit systems integrator Intellitech Systems. Bistro 82’s main and VIP areas are served by 14 JBL Control 65P/T full-range pendant speakers, mounted 10 feet above the floor using a suspension cable system. Additional first-floor speakers include six JBL ASB6112 single-12-inch subwoofers and five JBL AC16 2-way dual-8-inch speakers that are horizontally wall mounted. The speakers are powered by four Crown CDi 4000 amplifiers and networked using a BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-100 signal processor with digital audio bus and a BLU-8v2 programmable zone controller, which can independently route different audio and video sources to different areas in the restaurant.

The Sabrage lounge system is designed to deliver high-SPL audio – over 40,000 watts worth of peak power. Energy on the main dance floor area is fueled by six JBL AM7212/26 high-power 2-way loudspeakers, chosen for their clear, full-range, high-impact sound and compact design. The AM7212/26 loudspeakers are grouped to provide concentrated sound to the dance floor while not overpowering the rest of the nightclub. In addition, there are two ASB6125 and two ASB6115 single-15-inch subwoofers and seven JBL AC28 dual-8-inch loudspeakers, the latter mounted horizontally on the ceiling and aimed downward towards the dance floor. The loudspeakers are driven by Crown Macro Tech 12000i and 9000i amplifiers, networked together with a separate BSS BLU-100 processor.

All amplifiers, processors and A/V equipment are housed in a central ventilated equipment rack located on the first floor. In addition to its audio capabilities, the Bistro 82/Sabrage system features video and smart automation control that enables operation of the system via an iPad, iPhone or computer as well as the BSS wall controllers.

The team at Intellitech Systems invested over 200 hours of design and engineering into this project, using AutoCAD to lay out all the loudspeakers and subwoofers and EASE (Enhanced Acoustic Simulator for Engineers) acoustic modeling software to ensure optimum audio quality. Due to building architecture, there were some challenges – “On both floors, one entire wall consists of all windows,” noted Shaya, “and in the second floor night club we had to deal with a low ceiling.” To minimize the effects of the windows’ hard reflective surfaces, Intellitech sprayed surfaces on both floors with soundproofing material that not only helped reduce the amount of reverberation but also helped to separate both floors from each other acoustically. The EASE simulator enabled Shaya to choose the loudspeakers that would be best suited for each section of the interior spaces, and place and aim the loudspeakers for best sound coverage while minimizing unwanted reflections from the windows.

“I have to point out that the level of support we received from HARMAN Professional and the quality of their products helped make this project successful,” Shaya emphasized. “The all-HARMAN system architecture ensured total compatibility all around, and the BSS Audio Soundweb London processors allowed us to easily integrate iPad and iPhone control, which adds to the ease and convenience of operating the system.”

“We feel this is a breakthrough for the city of Detroit,” Shaya concluded. “It will definitely set a new trend for future bistros, bars and nightclubs.”

SYMETRIX SYMNET RADIUS 12×8 JAZZES IT UP AT FAMOUS NYC SOUL FOOD RESTAURANT

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – MARCH 2014: Founded in 1962 by Sylvia Wood, Sylvia’s Restaurant in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City serves soul food that has attained regional and international fame. Numbered among its past clients are Jesse Jackson, Magic Johnson, and the late Nelson Mandela, and its regulars include President Bill Clinton and Reverend Al Sharpton! Over the decades, Sylvia’s has expanded from its original storefront by annexing several of the adjacent storefronts. With each expansion, its sound system grew in size – but not in quality. Taylor Sound of Long Island, New York recently gave Sylvia’s a sophisticated, yet easy to use commercial-grade sound system centered on a Symetrix SymNet Radius 12×8 Dante networked audio DSP.

“The Symetrix Radius 12×8 was the first thing we installed at Sylvia’s, and it was almost too good,” said Bill Taylor, owner of Taylor Sound. “They clearly needed new speakers and amplifiers as well, but the Radius was such a step up from their old system that, without an external reference, the improvement seemed more than adequate. We went with the Radius 12×8 because we knew the sound quality would be there and because Symetrix’ open-architecture programming would allow us to give them the customized performance and user-control options that the restaurant needed. Specifically, we wanted to zone out each separate room so that processing and volume could be room-specific.” Taylor Sound designed and installed the new system.

Inputs to the system include a podium mic for calling guests when there is a wait (which is frequently), an iPod input, and output from an existing PreSonus studio/live board. The board supports the musicians and vocalists for Saturday Jazz Brunch and Sunday Gospel Brunch, each a longstanding tradition at the restaurant. User control includes a Symetrix ARC-2e wall panel remote for each room, as well as Symetrix ARC-WEB for managers. ARC-WEB allows them to control the system from their smartphones. Taylor Sound is installing new Renkus-Heinz TRX81 loudspeakers in each room in phases.

“The Symetrix Radius 12×8 has everything we need, including comprehensive dynamics, equalization, and delay for slight time alignment in each room,” said Taylor. “I really love working with the SymNet Composer open-architecture software. It allows me easily create whatever I need for a particular situation. Of course, giving the client ARC-WEB for free is nice. Finally, because the Radius 12×8 is built around the Dante network, it will be easy to expand in the future. Already, Sylvia’s is talking about blowing out another wall to add more table space!”
