New York Yankees Install Front Porch Digital Solutions to Migrate, Manage, and Protect Team’s Valuable Media Assets

The DIVArchive CSM system will serve as the heart of the Yankees’ editing and production environment, managing the team’s digital assets and making it possible to repurpose the content to enhance productions.

In order to be able to access the team’s many years of legacy content through DIVArchive, the Yankees installed a SAMMAsolo G4 HD single-stream migration solution, which supports a wide variety of videotape formats on input and then, in flight, simultaneously delivers multiple digital files including frame-accurate, lossless preservation-quality, broadcast-quality mezzanine, and proxy. The team also installed a SAMMAclean videotape cleaning unit to reduce defects from dirt and to identify other defects prior to tape migration. Leveraging SAMMA, the Yankees will migrate thousands of hours of videotape content to the digital domain.

Tyréns Deploys HARMAN’s Martin Professional Tripix 300™ LED Strips At Friends Arena, Sweden’s 65,000-seat Multi-Purpose Stadium

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Friends Arena, the home of Sweden’s national football team, is Scandinavia’s largest indoor arena and can accommodate up to 65,000 people for concerts, sports matches, and other events. Located in the up-and-coming neighborhood of Arenastaden in Stockholm, the arena is considered the centerpiece of an area surrounded by new residential, shopping, and commercial buildings. Tyréns, one of Sweden’s leading urban planning consultancies, was brought in to develop a lighting plan for the various areas around the arena, including the surrounding streets, bus terminals, ramps, roundabouts, squares, lifts, and stairs. The company installed a range of colored lighting including HARMAN’s Martin Professional Tripix 300™ LED strips to create different effects and visual attraction.

Faced with strict budget constraints and the need for a retrofitted solution, Tyréns had to develop a creative plan to ensure the lighting fixtures were not overtly visible. In addition, the design called for low power consumption combined with high output to ensure and maintain visibility when football matches or other night events were to take place in the Friends Arena. Tyréns solved this by installing double fixtures so half can be turned off on normal days and then activated for maximum impact when the arena is full.

As part of Tyrens solution, colored lighting has been installed in the area around the arena. Below the ramps leading up to the arena, fixtures with color filters cover the pillars with narrow beams and work as a complement to the street lights. The lift towers are also covered with light from Martin’s Tripix fixtures in different colors to create obvious meeting points for event attendees.

“Because Martin’s Tripix fixtures are calibrated the color of the lift towers stand pure and consistent,” explained Frida Almqvist, Lighting Designer, Tyréns. “The fixtures are easy to maintain because of their streamlined design, and the quality is excellent.”

Commenting on the collaboration with Martin Professional, Almqvist said, “The Martin team is eager to help out with all aspects of the installation. For example, choosing the right solution for lighting control, which was a great help.”

Martin Professional and Tyréns also have several other upcoming projects. In Åkersberga, Sweden nine Martin Tripix 300 have been installed in a subway as part of a bigger project to light dark and unsafe areas of Åkersberga. Another upcoming project is lighting for a unique fountain for the Municipality of Malmö.

SoundLab Held At USITT With Yamaha Support

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Held at USITT every other year, SoundLab concentrates on free product demonstrations for students, and this year, the conference was devoted to live sound reinforcement. Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. made a key contribution by supplying its latest products set up for the event in the Arena at the Fort Worth Convention Center.

“The idea that Mike Hooker (Head of Sound Design at UC Irvine’s Department of Dramatic Arts) and myself who co-chaired the project together was to provide students with the opportunity to mix live music while being mentored by some of the top people in the field as well as mixing on premium systems, states Erik Alberg, Technical Director for Events and Conferences, Hope College, Holland, Michigan. The ideal system was to be much larger and possibly bigger than students would ever have a chance to mix on with in their own university settings. We came up with a model of having two consoles at FOH and switching the live console from one to the other while bands were performing on stage.”

Alberg said they contacted a lot of manufacturers to see if they were interested in participating. “We needed a console to drive the line array rigs and were thrilled when Yamaha stepped up and offered us not only equipment but the expertise of their staff. Kevin Kimmel, a systems application engineer at Yamaha Commercial Audio was a great help in developing the system layout for FOH and monitor system. We created a network of inputs and consoles that not only worked for the SoundLab mixing events, but also for the special events held at USITT such as the keynote speech and award presentations, along with system demonstrations.”

The console system included three Yamaha CL5 consoles, two at front of house that handled the mixing for the live bands, and one as a monitor console. There was also a CL1 at front of house that switched between the two CL5s and was used for running the special events requirements such as wireless microphones, video feeds, and playback. The whole system was connected via Dante and included Yamaha Rio boxes onstage for inputs and outputs to the mains.

The bands were mixed by students at USITT under the mentoring of Buford Jones and Jim Van Bergen, as well as Kimmel who stepped in for one session and provided invaluable services as monitor engineer for all but one of the bands. Over 70 students had the chance to mix during the event.

“The Yamaha consoles were intrinsic to the success of this year’s SoundLab, says Alberg. They worked well and we had no problems with connectivity or routing thanks to Dante and Yamaha. I was also very impressed with the consoles, their flexibility, and ease of use. Sonically they were great and provided our students with an amazing opportunity. The Yamaha staff was critical to the success of the project. Their patience, understanding, and support were great and a real gift.”

REC4BOX OB Factory Shakes Canadian Mobile TV Production Industry with HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 Mixing Console

MONTREAL, Canada – Balancing the creative demands of production teams with the realities of tight budgets and production timelines, REC4BOX OB Factory specializes in manufacturing fully customized OB trucks. By designing and creating the first OB truck in its region that houses a HARMAN’s Studer Vista 1 mixing console, REC4BOX was able to set new industry standards in terms of versatility, deployment speeds and broadcasting capabilities.

Currently, REC4BOX operates on a contract basis, renting out or selling fully operational OB trucks to networks in Canada and the US. Each system undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that networks are able to start production within an hour of receiving the trailer, with only two onboard technicians. The Vista 1 console is perfect for this application, as it contains all mobile broadcasting tools, eliminating the need for additional racks of gear.

“For sound and television applications, we instantly think of Soundcraft and Studer,” said Jonathan Fortin, engineer at REC4BOX. “For this truck, we needed analog inputs right behind the board, so we went with Studer. We tend to be early adopters of technology, opting for the best solution for our trucks considering the tight budget and schedule.”

The Vista 1 console comes standard with 32 mic/line inputs and 32 analog line outputs as well as broadcast monitoring, talkback, red light control and eight GPIOs. For this particular truck, the REC4BOX team added a stage box with 64 additional inputs, and integrated the console with a complete 5.1 surround sound kit. The truck itself requires 12 analog inputs to operate, while 48 to 64 inputs are activated during a TV show.

Trivium, The ME, And New Yamaha QL: A “Three-Way Logical” Combination

BUENA PARK, Calif.—“Trivium” is an American heavy metal band from Orlando, Florida that formed in 2000, and since signing with Roadrunner Records in 2004, has released six studio albums and eighteen singles. Selling over one million albums worldwide and following the release of their sixth album, the band is out on tour in support of Vengeance Falls.

After speaking with Clair Bros. (Littiz, PA) who is responsible for audio production for the tour about different console options, Trivium’s monitor engineer, Mike Babcock, chose the new Yamaha QL5 Digital Audio Console for monitor mixing. Clair is also providing a FOH control package, a full stage patch package, and snake system for Trivium. The band owns JH-Audio IEMs and Sennheiser transmitters. Clair is also providing a full monitor system and control package for “Volbeat” who headlines the tour.

“The Yamaha QL Console Series could not have been released at a more opportune time, states Clair Account Manager, Justin Weaver. We were in the middle of talking to tour manager Joey Brueckmann and Mike Babcock about their upcoming tour package, and the QL5 was the perfect fit for the tour. Trivium is jumping around between headline, support, and festival shows, so having a reliable, compact console in monitor world was a must since real estate on stage is at a premium.”

After speaking with Doug Staab at Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, he assured Clair Bros. that Yamaha could have the QL5 QC’d and shipped to them before their shop load-out date. “Not only did they deliver on time, but our console department also had time to play with the console and was quite impressed with the design and feel of the QL, says Weaver. We look forward to deploying this desk on many more tours in the future that require a dependable, small-footprint mixing console.”

Initially, Trivium chose a Yamaha CL1 for the tour mainly because Brueckmann was finding that all of their fly dates had Yamaha PM5Ds for monitors, and we wanted to stay within the Yamaha family for consistency yet keep a small footprint for ease of everything,” states Babcock. The fact that the new QL5 was available was a huge bonus, mainly for the onboard preamps and not needing an additional Rio rack. I’ve never been one to shy away from new gear, especially from Yamaha.”

Babcock said since the main goal for a monitor console was a small footprint and Trivium is the main support act on the Volbeat tour, a quick load out was important. “Having a file system that is compatible with all Yamaha consoles is a big plus. The file conversion utility worked great with our first fly date festival using a Yamaha PM5D.” Babcock said that on that fly date with a converted QL5 show file for PM5D externally clocked at 96 there was no noticeable audio quality difference after gain structure was reset. “I would consider the QL5 to be PM5D quality (or better) in an Yamaha LS9 size. Great for club tours, support tours, and anywhere a small footprint is needed. Keeping client demands for high quality audio is the main goal, and the addition of the Premium Rack plug-ins is greatly appreciated and adds that little special sauce we all love. There are times where I really need dynamic EQ, and that option is great as well.”

“It all adds up to be the best monitor mixes anyone in the band has ever had mainly due to having the QL5 tools required to offset various venue conditions at the tip of my fingers.”

Delegates at the forthcoming TEDx Sydney conference on Saturday 26 April are set to be wowed by a breakthrough film by Kate Kazokas and Lucy Adelaide – thanks in no small part to projection technology and technical support services supplied by the TDC – Technical Direction Company.

Titled ‘John Was A Good Man’, the short film features prominent talent from across Australia including Jane Caro, Dr Karl, Paul McDermott, Matt Moran, Andrew O’Keefe, Turia Pitt, Jessica Tovey, Urthboy and Fred Nile. Each of the participants tells a short eulogy of their lives to date, using the third person and with video images of themselves being projected onto their own faces to heighten the sense of self-analysis.

“For ‘John Was A Good Man’ we’ve opened a conversation with renowned creative and industry professionals, challenging them to be honest, lie brutally and get creative,” explained Kazokas, who is the film’s co-creator, director and producer.

In order to create what Kazokas and Adelaide called “a combination of ‘light, shadow and abstraction that defined the German Expressionist movement,” each individual story came to life by blasting full-frame colour images onto subjects faces to create the abstraction that they wanted. The film was recorded over three days at Luxe Studios, Darlinghurst, Sydney.

“Using high-brightness video projection also allowed our participants to be confronted with ‘the self’ as they stepped into the light and were confronted with their own mortality,” added Kazokas. “Their responses were varied – many were humorous, some were absurd. All provided a strong insight into self-reflection.”

Michael Hassett, founder and Managing Director of TDC, commented: “From a technical point of view this was a project that sounded simple but was really quite challenging. There aren’t many video shoots where you are required to mount a projector behind the camera and fire the image directly onto the subject that’s being recorded – yet that is exactly what Kate and Lucy wanted us to do.

“The result is a truly stunning piece of film-making which we were delighted to facilitate with our technical expertise, high-quality AV technology and attention to detail.”

Between presentations at TEDx Sydney, Kazokas and Adelaide will speak live about the project as part of the TEDx The Studio series. The film’s debut will be especially poignant to TDC, given that the conference is being held at the Sydney Opera House – a venue the company is very familiar with, having supplied architectural projection to fire images onto both sides of the iconic structure as part of last autumn’s Royal Australian Fleet Review Spectacular celebrating 100 years since Australia welcomed their Naval Fleet into Sydney Harbour.

For those not attending TEDx on Saturday, 26 April, the event will be live streamed at TEDxSydney.com/LIVE. Viewers will be able to tune in to watch ‘John Was A Good Man’ at around 11:15 with a Q&A at around 13:00 (Sydney, Australia local time).
