HARMAN’s Studer ‘Expands Infinity’ With New Vista V Digital Console

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands – At IBC 2014, HARMAN’s Studer is adding to the immense power of its Vista X digital console with the next step in processing power and intuitive functionality, the Studer Vista V. The new 52-fader Vista V is based on the same Quad Star technology as its predecessor the Vista X, but in a more compact footprint ideal for smaller studios, OB trucks and large live productions.

The Vista V features a built-in meter bridge, high-quality motorized faders, and a sophisticated, built-in Dynamic Automation system with DAW remote control. The console is fully surround-sound capable, with versatile panning and monitoring functionality.

At the heart of the Vista V is the Infinity Core, which uses CPU-based processors to deliver an unprecedented 800+ audio channels with superb sonic quality, and more than 5,000 inputs and outputs. The use of CPU-based processors suggests exciting possibilities for scaling up to even larger channel counts, and for running third-party algorithms. Being able to program in high-level languages like C++ speeds up the time of implementing new features—never possible when using DSPs and FPGA processing technology.

Infinity Core provides 12 high-capacity A-Link ports (1,536 channels per port) for D23m I/O integration or direct connection into routing systems from Artel, Evertz, Riedel and more. The Vista V also offers easy integration into most AoIP networks used in broadcast like Dante and Livewire, and AES67.
The Vista V with Quad Star technology uses four processors to achieve aviation-standard levels of redundancy in the control surface, while CPU-based DSP makes it viable to provide two completely independent DSP cores running in parallel with instant changeover, without a single sample of audio dropout.

The Vista V also comes replete with VistaMix, Studer’s proprietary automated microphone mixing algorithm, based on gain sharing ideal for simplifying the mixing task at multi-contributor events like game shows, debates etc.. VistaMix removes the need for an operator to manually adjust all the faders all the time, leaving the microphones of talking participants open, while closing the microphones of silent participants in order to reduce spill and background noise. As VistaMix runs directly on the core, no external boxes are needed.

Vista V mixing engineers are freed from the burden of complex mental mapping, thanks to Studer’s revolutionary Vistonics™ interface, which builds Vista V’s rotary controls and buttons directly into the flat screen displays, providing visual feedback exactly where you operate. Each audio function is always associated with the same colour, e.g. red for EQ and filters, green for dynamics, and so on.

FaderGlow™ combines with assignable channel naming to further reduce stress by illuminating each fader in the colour relating to the relevant Vistonics function, creating an instant overview of console status. Studer’s new Spill Zone feature enables users to line up a group’s contributing channels with the press of just one button. FaderGlow then identifies their affiliation assigning the appropriate illumination.
The Vista V also features a built-in, high-class Loudness meter. The large-scale bargraph meter monitors every channel from mono to surround, plus a history display of up to the last 50 seconds of audio to capture any annoying clicks and overloads that are so hard to find in a multi-mic live show.

Built into the Vista V is the BSS DPR-901 Dynamic EQ Plug-In, assignable to any channel as desired and running directly on the Infinity Core. In addition, up to six Lexicon PCM96 Surround high-quality reverb processors can be connected with their parameters stored in the mixer’s snap shots and accessible directly from the Vistonics interface.

The Vista V also allows users to connect up to four Soundcraft Realtime Racks, providing access to Universal Audio’s (UAD) huge Plug-In library assignable on up to 64 Insert-Channels where their parameters are stored and managed directly in the Mixer’s CUE-List automation.

Little Dragon Performs At UK’s Somerset House With HARMAN Soundcraft Vi3000 Digital Console

LONDON, United Kingdom – Having attained international prominence, electronic pop band Little Dragon took to the stage at London’s major arts and cultural center Somerset House, utilizing the mixing capabilities of a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi3000 console. The 3,000-capacity venue is constructed with an open courtyard in the middle of a Victorian-era building, a true acoustic test for the latest Soundcraft digital console.

With almost a decade of audio engineering experience and several years working with the Soundcraft Vi Series, Little Dragon’s monitor engineer Marco Cruneri sees the Vi3000 as the best choice for the band.

“All Vi Series consoles have nice layouts and great sound, but the features on the Vi3000 are what attract me the most as they are excellent for monitor engineers,” said Cruneri. “I love the flexibility and versatility of the desk, it allows me to work as I would like. The fact that all the I/O is at the back of the desk makes it really compact.”

During its tour throughout the UK, Little Dragon faced multiple technical challenges including limits on the weight of the trailer and time restrictions during sound checks. Thanks to the ergonomics of the Vi3000, and the ability to complete sound checks with the iPad ViSi Remote App, Cruneri found it extremely easy to complete sound checks in the short time allocated.

“The iPad App means that I can work faster and more efficiently. I found that unlike some other brands, Soundcraft offers a straightforward console that touring engineers can pick up and immediately mix on, shown by intuitive features like FaderGlowTM.”

Cruneri plans to continue using the Vi3000 console for Little Dragon’s performances within the UK, and use it again during the upcoming winter tour. Greatly appreciating the simplicity and effectiveness of the console, he is able to bring out the “dense and punchy sounds” of the band.

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Provides Energy Efficient Lighting Solution for Danish Power Plant

ROSKILDE, Denmark — In 2011, Danish waste management company KARA/NOVEREN set out to replace two furnaces with a state-of-the-art waste-to-energy incineration line. Three years later the incineration line, or more popularly referred to as The Energy Tower, stands tall on the skyline of the Danish City of Roskilde, ready for its opening today, September 2nd 2014 with HARMAN’s Martin Professional lighting fixtures.

Increasing demands to reduce Co2 emissions from fossil fuels calls for alternative energy production, and implementing a modern facility will allow KARA/NOVEREN to utilize the energy resources from residual waste that cannot otherwise be recycled. In line with KARA/NOVEREN’s vision was for The Energy Tower to become a new Danish landmark. Naturally they wanted an energy efficient lighting solution to go with it so 112 Martin Exterior 410 fixtures and 78 Tripix 1200 LED strips were installed, controlled by Martin’s M-PC software.

KARA/NOVEREN envisioned a structure with the ability to communicate and relay messages of sustainable energy to the public. Located only a few hundred meters from one of the major inroads to the Danish Capital of Copenhagen, it has a huge reach and potentially thousands of spectators on a daily basis.

The Energy Tower was designed by Dutch Architect and expert in sustainable design Erick Van Egeraat, who brought in Danish Lighting Architect Gunver Hansen to identify and implement the most optimal lighting solution. An extensive testing phase began to determine the best choice of fixtures. The requirements for these fixtures were very specific. First of all the lighting solution had to be able to reproduce the lighting concept created by Van Egeraat (described below). All fixtures should be individually controllable to give the building a dynamic expression. It was also crucial that the fixtures would be able to illuminate the relatively difficult projection surface, which was dark and very diverse. At the same time the lighting should be bright and powerful enough to be seen from a distance. Finally, of course there was also a desire for low power consumption.

Even before the construction process had started, various forms of testing were performed on surfaces that resembled the projection surface of The Energy Tower. Ultimately, Martin Professional’s Exterior range fixtures were chosen for the project due to their size, durability, and color reproduction capabilities.

Van Egeraat’s vision for the lighting was for it to be an aesthetic contribution to The Energy Tower as a new landmark, and that it should signal the processes that take place inside of the tower and portray the combustion and energy making process. “At night the backlight perforated façade transforms the incinerator into a gently glowing beacon – a symbol of the plant’s energy production,” said Erick van Egeraat. “Several times an hour a spark of light will gradually grow into a burning flame that lights up the entire building. When the metaphorical fire ceases, the building falls back into a state of burning embers.”

Van Egeraat’s vision for the lighting was for it to be an aesthetic contribution to The Energy Tower as a new landmark, and that it should signal the processes that take place inside of the tower. The lighting scenario that is in place for the opening starts with a white flickering at the bottom that spreads to the whole tower. For a few minutes every hour the spark gradually grows into a blazing flame that encases the whole building. The array of warm colors resembling flames and glowing coals are meant to portray the combustion and energy making process.

“When I designed the tower I wanted the lighting design to complement the building and express what type of building it is and what it does,” said Van Egeraat. “The lighting solution has proven to have many more options than we originally anticipated, and therefore we are now working on additional lighting designs for special occasions such as the Danish Constitution Day, cultural and sporting events etc. Citizens of Roskilde and the surrounding areas will be in for a treat.”

According to Gunver Hansen this was one of the more challenging projects of her career. The structure itself consists of a framing grid built around the new chimney. An amber-colored aluminum plating is mounted onto the grid to form the exterior facade of the tower. The fixtures are mounted inside on the grid between the outer facade and the facade of the inner building, and the fixtures project onto the inner facade, which is visible at night through the laser-cut circular openings of the outer facade. Many factors had to be taken into consideration, e.g. the distance between the exterior facade and the interior projection surface varies across the entire structure. Therefore each individual fixture had to be placed carefully so the colors would mix correctly and the output would be even. Also, as the direct view into the LEDs in the fixtures had to be avoided, a number of the projectors had to be screened off with a specially designed grid.

The next challenge that presented itself was how to mount the fixtures. A lift was not an option as the fixtures had to be mounted between the inner surface and the new exterior facade. As the space was not accessible to any kind of machinery, a team of professional climbers from Danclimb was hired to mount the fixtures via rope access.

Today, on its opening day, the tower is already a well-known landmark and the object of admiration for passers-by. “We’ve already received an overwhelming public support for this project,” said Thorkil Jørgensen, CEO of KARA/NOVEREN. “People respond very well to the idea and the concept, and they really like what it adds to the area in terms of architecture and beautiful lighting. This is extremely valuable to us for branding purposes and to secure a future leading position in waste management. We see it as a great investment on several levels. We’re happy to combine an investment in modern waste management methods with an extraordinarily beautiful structure and landmark for the area.”

“We’re very pleased with the end result,” Lighting Architect, Gunver Hansen added. “The many creative possibilities for changing light color and light patterns on the Energy Tower’s facades work amazingly. I think we have succeeded in creating a shining Energy Tower, that is a fascinating and magical landmark on the dark Roskilde night sky.“

Even though not officially open till today, spectators have already had glimpses of the building in lit condition. For example during the famous Roskilde Festival, The Energy Tower shone orange to mirror the official color of the festival and its main stage. Part of the magic of KARA/NOVEREN’s new Energy Tower is its ability to alter its appearance with future lighting designs for special events, and that the lighting concept sends the message of waste-to-energy to spectators. It is an important message with global relevance.

The Energy Tower has been submitted for the Danish Lighting Award 2014.

Yamaha Commercial Audio Donates Live System To Nashville HS

Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School in Nashville, Tennessee offers students the opportunity to learn through the lens of the entertainment industry with pathways in audio engineering, broadcasting, record industry, marketing, and image consulting. It is the only entertainment magnet high school in the country. The vision of Pearl-Cohn is to equip its students to realize and achieve their potential while committed to educate the whole person.

Bryan Lenox of Lenox Productions facilitated the arrangement with Yamaha, who in turn, enlisted the services of J Sound Services (Nashville) to add a new Yamaha CL1 Digital Audio Console and Rio 3208-D input/out box to its 413-seat auditorium. Yamaha IS and DXR speakers, and TXn amplifiers were also installed. J Sound Services specified the system for its easy operation by student volunteers. Auditorium productions at Pearl-Cohn can be anything from assemblies with announcements and presentations that include video to full-on theatrical events.

J Sound Services has had a lot of experience installing Yamaha Installation Series Speakers, so they were the obvious choice for the installation. “Once we understood the scope of the project, we determined a Yamaha MTX5D processor and DCPS wall-mount controller would also be required,” states Jason Spence, owner, J Sound Services. The design approach was based on the fact that there is limited acoustic treatment in the school auditorium. “It was important to minimize the amount of energy on the walls, says Spence.

Time was spent using Yamaha’s YS3 Sound System Simulator and EASE acoustic modeling software to focus the mid-high and subwoofer-arrays. Deployed end-fire arrays both in L-R and Center allow pattern control on how wide the throw would be in the room and also provides a Cardiod pattern measuring 12db down on stage behind the arrays. “By deploying the subs this way we have significantly reduced the low-end energy on the stage and what would have reflected off the walls in a typical Omni pattern, Spence adds. The room can easily handle and extends below 40Hz without the low-end building up, leaving the room also very articulate and musical. The house is nice and big with lots of sub. The design is very unique and it clearly looks different. The staff and Bryan Lenox were quite impressed with the results of the end-firing arrays.”

Lenox assisted in the set up and adjustments of the CL1. “The system sounds really good. The school had a unique need for a system that can handle intimate speaking all the way to low-end thumping Hip Hop music. And, this system definitely delivers. The CL1 is a great sounding console and one that the students can learn on in order to prepare for the real world so they can jump into any situation with confidence.”

The new auditorium’s multi-purpose system is all Dante connected with the Yamaha CL1 taking control of presets for theatrical productions using the consoles Nuendo Live software. Pearl-Cohn ran cat5 cable to their multi-track room to record the events taking place in auditorium. A.Cisco switch is used to network and import multi-tracking in studio. An old projection booth above the auditorium now has the capability of adding a Nuendo recording suite with infrastructure and cables already in place.

“Our students needed professional-class live production facilities in order to complete our vision to equip our students with real-world skills that will transfer to the marketplace or college when they graduate, states Sam Lorber, Instructional Designer at Pearl-Cohn. Thanks to Yamaha’s generous donation, these students will now be able to walk into any venue: club, church, college auditorium, or arena with a skill set advantage no other school can provide.” The principal commented on how she loves that she can touch one button and it just works.

J Sound Services also installed a Vivitek High-Definition 6K lumen projector with remote HDMI interface. To update the theatrical lighting system, JSS enlisted the consulting services of Chris Lisle Lighting Design and installed Elektralite LED PAR fixtures, Watson raceway and ElektraHazer, an Altman spotlight, and Chauvet Datastream; all of which integrated with the existing ETC dimmers. As part of the lighting system update the existing Fresnels and Lekos were reconditioned and focused.

J Sound Services also installed four Yamaha C115VA and two C112VA Club Series Speakers using a MTX3 processor and the same DCPS wall-mounted controller as in the auditorium. Spence said the system installed could be operated in the same manner, with a touch of a button, making it extremely simple and consistent for staff and students to operate the systems in either location.
