HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1™ Console Does Double Duty for Engineer Pete Freeman in the Studio and on Tour

LONDON, United Kingdom – Pete Freeman is a UK-based engineer who is as comfortable in the studio as he is doing live sound for touring bands. Currently, Freeman is the Technical Manager at Gibson Guitar Studio in London, and is also the front of house engineer for Vintage Trouble, a band that mixes soul, R&B, rock and funk to create the infectious sound that earned them the 2011 Best New Band award from Classic Rock magazine. Freeman relies on a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 digital mixing console at Gibson Studios and will be taking it on the road for a number of shows for Vintage Trouble’s upcoming European tour. His preference for the Vi1 is the culmination of years of experience using a variety of Soundcraft consoles in every conceivable studio and live situation.

“Soundcraft has always made my favorite consoles and the ones I feel the most at home with, whether digital or analog,” said Freeman. “Their EQs work in a way that I’m most comfortable with. In fact, I don’t really have to look at the EQ labels on the controls any more. When I do, I find that the labeled frequency I’m reaching for is more often than not just the one I wanted to cut or boost.”

Freeman remarked that he does not find the same level of tailored accuracy in other brands of consoles. “This intuitive feel and operation is the same for me whether I’m using the Vi1 or Vi6 digital consoles, an MH Series analog desk or even one of the Si Compact ‘notebook’ mixers,” he said. “I feel like everything’s been thought out.”

“I had been using the Soundcraft Vi6 in many venues across the country, and when Soundcraft was in the process of introducing the Vi1 they gave me one to test,” Freeman added. “To be honest, I did not want to give it back.”

Freeman has since incorporated the Vi1 into Gibson Studio’s control room. “It is an absolute joy to mix on,” he noted. “We have used it to mix live broadcast audio for a variety of acts and have also done countless Radio Academy broadcasts using the Vi6.”

Freeman has also found the Vi1 to be the ideal console for his live sound projects. “I am currently working for management company McGhee Entertainment as the front of house engineer for Vintage Trouble,” he said. “It is a lot of fun and having the Vi1 as the console helps make it a positive experience. In fact, the Vi1 offers the flexibility you need for any application, and it’s genuinely brilliant that a console this portable has so much functionality. I have always loved the Vistonics™ II illuminated color touchscreen interface, and sonically you cannot fault the Vi1 in any way. It offers amazing value considering its price–but I would rate the Vi1 as the top console out there, regardless of price.”

ASHLY AUDIO KLR SERIES AMPLIFIERS CONTRIBUTE TO GREEN DESIGN AT HILTON

hilton_concord.JPGSAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – FEBRUARY 2012: When the Hilton Concord undertook a multi-million dollar plan to renovate its thirty year-old property, it wanted to do more than merely spruce up the amenities. The popular hotel, which occupies prime real estate on the East Bay of San Francisco, wanted to increase the environmental sustainability of its operations. The overhaul included the use of recycled carpet, LED lighting, low-VOC paints, and a new, super-efficient HVAC system. Even the sound reinforcement system in the building’s flexible ballroom and meeting space contributes to the hotel’s much smaller carbon footprint. Local AV integrator JK Sound, Inc. designed the new sound reinforcement system around Ashly Audio’s new KLR Series amplifiers, which deliver tremendous output efficiency while still maintaining high fidelity, bulletproof reliability, and affordability.

“There wasn’t much to the original sound reinforcement system,” said Dan Thiel, sales and installation more

Christ the King Church Enhances Sound with NEXO Line Array

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Christ the King Church in Bellingham, WA recently completed an overhaul of its sound system, awarding the installation contract to Clarity Media Group of Portland. Clarity provided the best solution for the task at hand, outfitting the 1,500-seat church with a 20-box NEXO GEO S12 line array.

“The church wanted a system capable of accommodating a worship service and in addition, have rider acceptability to bring in concerts,” states John Harrel, project manager, Clarity Media Group. “The NEXO GEO S12, consisting of eight S1210 boxes per side, is configured as an LCR and was chosen based on its smooth, even coverage as well as its musicality and output. Our client wanted a center cluster rather than front fills and flown subs, so we recommended four GEO S1230s which met their requirements and are tucked away very discretely above the pastor’s podium position. The previous system was an eyesore.” The system also contains four NEXO RS18 Ray Sub cabinets flown, two per side in cardioid mode. Two NEXO NX4x4 and one NX4x1 amplifiers power the system.

“The NEXO system’s ability to maintain uniform coverage despite having a low trim height was key in choosing it for this application,” states Travis Cibolski, Clarity co-owner and designer of the system. “The net effect is that the system delivers uniform, transparent sound to all areas, and with full bandwidth!”

Christ the King Church has 6,000 members in its congregation with two campus locations. The church band consists of 6-10 musicians on average who, according to Harrel, are very discerning when it comes to good audio (one of its members is a signed recording artist).

The church previously installed a Yamaha M7CL-48 digital console at front of house, chosen for its ease of use by audio volunteers.

NFL Films Deploys Fairlight EVO and Xynergi Consoles For A Winning Strategy to Deliver Outstanding Production

MOUNT LAUREL, New Jersey- In order to achieve the highest level of audio quality in production and post-production of sports-themed entertainment and documentaries, NFL Films utilizes Fairlight’s EVO and Xynergi consoles to create material for the National Football League’s weekly highlights, analysis shows and documentaries featuring the league’s greatest players and performances.

At its Mount Laurel, NJ facility, NFL Films occupies 16 audio suites for production work, using the Xynergi console with the addition of five EVO’s in the past 18 months. “Our engineering staff was able to add the EVO consoles into our Xynergi rooms with very minimal downtime,” states Vince Caputo, Supervising Sound Mixer at NFL Films. “We knew the software and automation well, so adding the EVO control surfaces was an easy upgrade operationally as well.”

During the season, NFL Films produces weekly shows for a variety of outlets including NFL Network, ESPN, Showtime, The NBC Sports Network and Velocity. Their work in featured on programs such as NFL Films Presents, Inside The NFL, NFL Turning Point, and SoundFX.

NFL Films also produces documentaries and specials for HBO, such as the Emmy Award winning Lombardi, the recently premiered Namath, and the hit reality series Hard Knocks, a behind-the-scenes look into NFL training camps. Their America’s Game and A Football Life series both run on NFL Network, and have garnered critical acclaim.

“Sonically, the Fairlight product has always been brilliant, but the other main attraction for us is speed,” Caputo continued. “The bulk of our work is straight up editing of dialogue and nat sound, general track prep and sound effects placement. For all of that, the speed and flexibility of the Xynergi is unmatched. We also rely on the clip-based DSP, so that when we reach back in to our archives for a sound clip, we can import it with all of the work done, level, eq, rendered plug-ins, fades, etc. That saves us from having to do that same job twice.”

“With both the clip-based and channel strip control, there is an over-abundance of power and flexibility, so there are few boundaries,” Caputo said.

Combining the Xynergi with the EVO has only made the process easier for NFL Films, allowing the editing and mixing process to overlap. “There is much less delineation between the pre-dubbing and mixing processes, the mix is always on.” Simultaneous work helps to keep workflow moving, which is crucial for the NFL team.

Fairlight is an integral part of how NFL Films operates, as shown by their dedication to the products for nearly 20 years. “Our Fairlight network and file server are at the core of our audio operation. The server houses all of our shared data, sound efx libraries, HD video that we simultaneously stream from multiple rooms, and archives dating back over 20 years. Very little data is stored locally, making it fast and easy to work on the same project in multiple rooms,” Caputo mentioned.

For Caputo and the rest of the team at NFL Films, the ‘Fairlight way’ of operating is the only way to do it. “Our audio infrastructure and workflow are built around the Fairlight operating system. There are so many unique features in the Xynergi/EVO combination that you can’t find elsewhere. If you never had them, you wouldn’t miss them, but once you get used to that power, you can’t do without it.”

Caputo explained the long-standing relationship with Fairlight and how NFL Films has contributed in driving product development. “They trust us to give them reliable feedback, and have used it to implement features that are beneficial to us, as well as all of their end users. It is a powerful relationship we are proud to have.”

More Gain Before Feedback Achieved at Rose Bowl and Super Bowl Thanks to RND 5045

BUENA PARK, Calif.—An ongoing issue with ref mics appears to have been resolved with the use of the new Rupert Neve Designed Portico 5045 Primary Source Enhancer developed for, and distributed by, Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, Inc. A case in point was the recent use of the unit by Jack Bowling of ATK AudioTek at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena and the Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

Bowling had the chance to demo the RND 5045 unit prior to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena to explore the possibilities for its use in resolving certain issues of this specific application. “Kevin Kimmel from Yamaha Commercial Audio Systems, having worked with me in the past, knows I project manage and mix the UCLA football games and also mix the Tournament of Roses Game at the Rose Bowl,” states Bowling. “He initially introduced me to the RND 5045 suggesting it might help achieve more gain before feedback and provide more clarity on the referee microphone. I was curious to see what effect it would have, and after some patching and a further discussion of various parameters, we tried it out and I was impressed with the change the unit made.”

Bowling said the Rose Bowl PA is a distributed system with all speakers pointing toward the field, and because of this, a great portion of the reverberant energy works its way onto the field, making for a challenging situation. “It was only through experimentation that I was able to hear the effect and appreciate the change it made to the ref mic,” says Bowling. “The 5045 did an excellent job tightening up the ref’s voice by attenuating a great deal of that reverberant energy.”

Because of the success he had with the RND 5045 at the Rose Bowl, Bowling took the unit on the road to Indy for the Super Bowl where he used a Yamaha M7CL digital console at his mix position and two Sennheiser MKE-2 Platinum mics connected through a dual switch to two Shure Axient transmitters and receivers (only one element is used at a time, the additional system is used as a backup). “The RND 5045 was great! I had limited time to tune the ref mic and was very pleased with the result. I used the 5045 on an insert with a Cedar DNS-1500 and an XTA Parametric EQ and ended up with a ref mic that sounded very natural and had plenty of gain. I am always looking for a way to improve the clarity and squeeze just a bit more level out of the ref mic and this unit did both.”
