General Cable Launches Gepco® Brand Stadium Cables at the 2014 NAB Show

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, APRIL 7, 2014 — General Cable is pleased to launch its line of Gepco® Brand Stadium Cables at the 2014 NAB Show (Booth #C7708) April 7-10, 2014. The new line of stadium cables allow for simplified installation of one cable across Direct Burial and Riser applications.

Typical indoor and outdoor applications require the installer to use different cables and splice the two together, requiring more time, while also making the installation vulnerable to signal loss or errors. With Gepco Brand stadium cables, the installer can run a single cable from the outside direct burial environments directly into buildings for riser applications, no splicing necessary.

Gepco stadium cables feature two-ply water-blocking tape and water-swellable fillers (audio only) for advanced water protection in direct burial installations while also retaining a CMR rating. Available in single-pair audio (61801SC), high-definition RG 11 coax (VHD1100SC) and RG 11 triax (VT61811SC), all Gepco Brand stadium cables are ideal for extended-distance runs.

“Gepco Brand stadium cables provide solid performance across two very different applications,” said Brian Lamar, Product Manager, General Cable Communications Products. “Gepco and General Cable are pleased to provide a solution that makes installation for stadiums and other outdoor venues quicker and easier.”

Gepco® Brand Plenum Hybrid Fiber Cable Debuts at the 2014 NAB Show

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, APRIL 7, 2014 — General Cable is pleased to announce the addition of the Gepco® Brand HDC920P Plenum Hybrid Fiber Camera Cable at the 2014 NAB Show (Booth #C7708) April 7-10, 2014. For permanent installation in plenum air spaces, the new HDC920P fiber optic and copper conductor hybrid fiber cable for SMPTE 311 applications features a flexible, white UL rated PVC jacket.

In the hybrid 311 format, the HD video signal is transmitted over two single-mode optical fibers to ensure accurate and extended-distance data transmission. To increase the durability, Gepco uses a special nylon-based polymer with increased tensile strength for the fiber coatings, and a 16 AWG steel strength member is cabled at the center of the cable core. All copper elements feature heat-resistant PE insulation and a shielded copper braid.

The HDC920P joins the complete line of Gepco Brand SMPTE 311 hybrid fiber camera cables. The HDC920 comes in an extra-flexible, abrasion-resistant TPE compound that is ideal for portable, studio and outdoor broadcast applications, while the HDC920R comes in a riser rated PVC outer jacket for permanent installation. Designed for permanent underground installation, the HDC920PEF has an extra-rugged polyethylene jacket and water blocking tape wrapped around the cable core. Heavy-duty versions with a modified construction for rugged environments are also available.

Gepco® Brand Lightweight and Flexible 7.8 mm Hybrid Fiber Camera Cable Featured at NAB 2014

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, APRIL 7, 2014 — General Cable is pleased to demonstrate the flexible and lightweight, yet durable Gepco® Brand HDC720HD 7.8 mm Hybrid Fiber Cable at the 2014 NAB Show (Booth #C7708) April 7-10, 2014. Radically different from typical industry products but with the same performance characteristics of traditional SMPTE 311 cables, the HDC720HD 7.8 mm hybrid fiber cable is 16 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter in design. Visitors will be able to feel for themselves the differences in size, weight and flexibility of the HDC720HD compared to a typical portable 9.2 mm cable and how those differences add up when in use in the field.

The revolutionary construction of the HDC720HD starts with replacing the typical heavy steel strength member with a Kevlar® strength member that has the same pull strength of steel, but is lighter and more flexible. Unlike steel, Kevlar expands and contracts at the same rate as the glass members during temperature extremes, keeping the elements in the cable aligned reducing migration. Using Kevlar in place of steel also means the cable has virtually no memory making the cable easier to pay off, lay flat and wind back up on the drum.

For further durability, the HDC720HD utilizes bend-insensitive fiber elements with very low attenuation and a bend radius of 0.2 mm—versus 2.0 mm for traditional single-mode fiber—in a breakout style with additional Kevlar protection around the individual fibers.

In the HDC720HD, the typical outer braid is replaced with two 18 AWG drain wires and a foil shield that allow the cable to be more flexible, lighter and smaller in diameter. The power conductors consist of two
16 AWG conductors so you can still achieve the same distance a regular SMPTE 311 cable performs to. The master jacket of HDC720HD is polyurethane material with a glossy finish that reduces the pickup of dirt and debris from outside applications, making it easier to keep clean.

“The HDC720HD design provides a lightweight, flexible solution with the added bonus of reducing migration errors caused by temperature extremes,” said Brian Lamar, Product Manager, General Cable Communications Products. “This makes the HDC720HD extremely ideal for use in portable applications and with high-definition Steadicams.”

MassAV Creates ‘Ultimate Production Snake’ by FiberPlex

It’s lights, cameras and a whole lot more action for massAV as a result of a new FiberPlex Technologies optical snake recently added to its linecard.

The live event AV staging and production company in Billerica, Massachusetts, purchased FiberPlex’s WDM optical multiplexer to create what massAV Director of Operations Aaron Raymond calls the ultimate production snake. “We build a lot of very high end video systems, and when you start adding multiple lines of HD video along with audio, data, lighting and control for an event, it really has to be fiber,” he said, adding, “We’d been limited in our use of fiber until now because it meant having to set up an optical transmitter and receiver on every single channel, and that got expensive.”

Now, with FiberPlex’s WDM-8 active wave division multiplexer, massAV can multiplex eight discrete signals at 3 Gb/s each for transporting video, audio, lighting and control feeds onto one fiber pair.

The FiberPlex WDM multiplexer comes in 16-channel and 8-channel models and are on a cost parity with copper and copper’s associated installation and handling expenses. As the cost of copper cabling continues to rise, companies like massAV are going the fiber optic route to transport large volumes of content. Optical fiber has ten times the transference rate of copper at the high end and can transmit data error-free over greater distances by a 400:1 ratio.

“The FiberPlex multiplexer makes it so that we can run eight channels on the same fiber pair as opposed to dealing with the different types and sizes of copper cabling as well as the need to re-clock signals every couple hundred feet for longer runs,” explained Raymond.

As a result, massAV is able to replace 2,000 pounds of copper cabling with a 25-pound spool of fiber optics for large events, a savings that is realized by its corporate and other live event customers in reduced labor, setup time and transportation costs to truck in and set up copper cabling at events.

Multiplexing media and control signals onto one, 1/4-inch optical cable is also ideal for events that require running cables down hallways, across doorways or through public areas where bulky copper cabling is not practical, said Raymond.

massAV recently tried out the new multiplexer for a 1,500-person event with a main stage, two control areas, and 26 video projectors in the air – all tied together via the ultimate production snake consisting of little more than a spool of fiber optic cabling and a pair of WDM multiplexers. The setup involved multiple lines of data, video, audio, lighting control, intercom communications, and serial communications between equipment.

FiberPlex’s eight-channel WDM-8 and sixteen-channel WDM-16 multiplexers use interchangeable SFP/SFP+ modules for interfacing to a variety of gear and environments, including converting between media formats SD-SDI, HD-SDI, 3G-SDI, and 6G-SDI and for HDMI/DVI, 10/100/1G Ethernet and MADI, as well as full duplex and BiDi optical. massAV’s new multiplexer provides the flexibility now and into the immediate future as new media requirements change, noted Raymond.

FiberPlex recently took to the road to conduct a 25-city demo tour of its active wave division multiplexers as the ultimate production snake (check with a local FiberPlex representative for details). FiberPlex makes fiber optic products and systems for government agencies as well as for houses of worship, corporate facilities, broadcast applications, and K-12 and higher education.

RapcoHorizon Hits the Stage with Jay-Z

Award-Winning Rapper’s Guitar/Bass and Keyboard Techs Rely on Custom Cable Runs for Magna Carter World Tour

JACKSON, MO, FEBRUARY 5, 2014 – Thanks to RapcoHorizon, an RHC Holdings brand and leading manufacturer of audio/video interfacing and cable equipment, the instrumentals for Jay-Z’s Magna Carter World Tour are making the connection with his audiences night after night, while on stage. As the instrument and speaker cable of choice for the tour, which supports the award-winning rapper’s first new album in four years, the RapcoHorizon cables were custom fitted to accommodate the intricate rigs, some of which are on 28-foot-high risers.

As all RapcoHorizon cables are designed for the working musician, the custom instrument and speaker cables are road ready and tour tough, employing the most rugged constructions without sacrificing sound quality. The custom cables created by the company for the tour include runs as long as 50- to 100-feet in order to not only reach across the stage, but also above.

“With guitar, bass, and keyboard player, Clay Sears, up 28-feet in the air, 22-feet above Jay-Z, I had to have instrument and speaker cables that were able to handle the degradation that happens from that distance,” says A.J. “Jukebox” Srybnik, guitar and bass tech for the Magna Carter World Tour. “These cables work just like they are three feet long. I know that in talking to my monitor engineers and FOH guys, they’re just ecstatic with the tones we are getting, and I don’t think it’s necessarily from all the gear, but rather from the cables. I have a lot of runs that go in different lengths, and you’d think my sound would be inhibited, but it’s not. The cables are so dependable.”

“I’m thrilled to be working with RapcoHorizon,” says Benjamin Jacobs, keyboard tech and backline crew chief for the tour. “These cables outperform every other brand we’ve tried. We recently did a one-off date in Abu Dhabi and my cable looms, which are comprised of the RapcoHorizon cables, were one of the only pieces of our permanent touring gear that I brought along.”

In addition to the unique audio rigs, the Magna Carter World Tour also has extensive load outs, with gear on four different risers and at various heights. With the speed at which the tour moves between stops, and the amount of gear being used, the cables are quite often yanked from the equipment by stagehands, which can sometimes be detrimental.

“We unplug every keyboard, speaker and amp, and push everything away very quickly,” continues Srybnik. “You’d think that everyday I’d have a broken cable or connector, but that hasn’t been the case. I haven’t had to go into the spare cable case once this entire tour. We don’t have a normal load out. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen, it’s literally like ants attacking a sugar hill. But we haven’t had any problems and I think that has to do with the strain release and the stuff they coat the cables with, it’s very durable. The coating on the speaker cables is also gorgeous – a really nice blue and silver that stands out nicely on the floor, which keeps people from tripping on them.”

All cables from The RapcoHorizon Company are designed to work perfectly no matter how often they are put to use. Another benefit of the RapcoHorizon cables is their ability to coil nicely. The quality of the cables and flexible jacket ensure that they not only lay flat on stage, but also roll up easily without causing bends.

Srybnik also admits that his rig isn’t the most complicated on the tour and that Jacobs uses nearly three times as many instrument cables as him. “He’s got probably 30 keyboards all doing stereo runs, so you’re looking at 60 runs, and these cables get beat up the most. Any time he has a problem, it ends up being an outboard problem or some other audio issue. It never comes back as a bad cable, which is funny because that’s what you always used to hear – ‘swap out the cable, it’s bad’ – you’re just not hearing that anymore.”

As an avid RapcoHorizon enthusiast that has used the company’s cables on tour with a variety of artists, such as Selena Gomez, Foreigner and Buckcherry, Srybnik is also impressed with the customer service that he is afforded. In the case of the Jay-Z tour, his custom cables were completed on short notice after the audio rigs were moved from the ground to the air.

“The best part about it all is that I was in a jam when we changed the audio rigs and The RapcoHorizon Company bailed me out,” he adds. “It’s amazing that they were able to get me a high-quality cable that sounds the way I want, pretty much whenever I need. They have the best customer service for touring crews, and this situation emphasizes that.”

RHC Holdings, located in Jackson, Missouri, is one of the world’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of audio, video, home theater, data and telecommunications interfacing products. Comprising RapcoHorizon, Momentum, Pro Co, Pro Co Data, RAT, RoadHog and StageMASTER, each RHC Holdings brand has developed a reputation in many industries for reliability, and superior sound performance.
