Bexel Supports a New Season of the Best in Reality TV

From “Chopped” to “The Apprentice,” Company Provides Services for a Host of Non-Scripted Shows
Bexel
(BURBANK, Calif.) – As the Fall television season rolls out, a wide array of reality programming is being supported by Bexel, a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions. Bexel can be found behind the scenes on a veritable who’s who of non-scripted programming, including Chopped and The Apprentice, providing them with the equipment, state-of-art systems, and engineering support needed to meet the highest broadcast standards.

The span of Bexel’s services in reality television covers the entire gamut the genre has to offer. From competitions like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, Hell’s Kitchen, RuPaul’s Drag Race, and Utopia; to the real world exploits of Beyond Scared Straight, Black Ink Crew, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, The Real Housewives of Orange County, Vanderpump Rules, Watch What Happens: Live, and White Girl Problems; to sports-based shows including The Big Break, Deadliest Catch: The Bait, and Hard Knocks, Bexel contributes expertise, support, and solutions to some of television’s most entertaining shows.

Bexel provides a variety of premier technology solutions to these shows, including complete ENG camera packages with wireless monitoring, full ENG audio packages with multi-track recording, Cat-5 monitoring for offstage production offices, fiber booth kits, flypack systems, director/DP monitoring solutions, and much more. The company’s services also incorporate on-site design and installation, overall project management of the technical production, customized communication systems, and frequency coordination and consultation.

Chopped, which will soon begin airing its 22nd season, has been working with Bexel from day one. The popular cooking competition works with a 12 ENG camera flypack from Bexel, utilizing 10 Panasonic AJ-HDX900s cameras and two Panasonic AK-HC1500G robotics systems. The show is provided with CopperHead and SMPTE fiber cable, as well as Bexel’s custom camera harness, to make the ENG cameras work as needed in a studio application.

“From season one, we’ve worked with the great team at Chopped to build a camera package specific to their needs,” says Ernesto de la Torre, business development manager for Bexel. “To be cost effective, they need a very versatile system. With their 12 cameras, they have the flexibility to do what they need in the fast-paced Chopped Kitchen, while still being able to go ENG, which they do for the contestant bio packages. We’re also able to support their Steadicam Operator, who uses a Teradek Bolt Pro system. It allows him to record onboard with the Bolt, and transmit his signal to the control room integrating it into the full production process.”

Bexel also provides hands-on engineering support, delivered in a way that is uniquely integrated with the production. Timothy Quinn, a system engineer for Bexel, serves as the Engineer in Charge on Chopped. In that role, Quinn oversees the technical engineering aspects of the entire production. “Tim is an integral part of the show, and he’s truly considered to be a member of the Chopped crew after all these years,” notes de la Torre. “We also provide a Video Operator who’s charged with making sure all the cameras are matched when the show is being produced, which helps manage time and budgets during the editing process. Bexel’s commitment to our clients is exemplified by Tim and the complete services and support we’re proud to provide for Chopped.”

“Bexel’s support has been invaluable on Chopped,” comments Notional’s Loe Fahie, Line Producer for Chopped. “As an equipment and services provider, they’ve been with us every step of the way. Even when we moved studios a few seasons ago, everything went seamlessly. The team at Bexel knows our production requirements and anticipates our technical needs, which helps keep our production on schedule. I love this team. Ernesto and Tim act as if our show is their show as well. Bexel is part of the Chopped family!”

Bexel has also enjoyed a longstanding relationship with The Apprentice franchise. The popular series, featuring Donald Trump, will soon begin airing its 14th season (The Celebrity Apprentice 7), and Bexel has been in “the boardroom” from the very beginning. Each season the company sends a team of engineers to execute and oversee the entire installation in The Apprentice’s Trump Tower studios. For the upcoming season, the production is utilizing 24 cameras from Bexel, including 18 Sony PDW-F800s cameras and 60 channels of wireless audio from Sennheiser and Lectrosonics.

“From the very start, versatility was key for this production,” notes Gregory Bragg, vice president of Global Sales for Bexel. “Their field crews are able to use the 18 ENG cameras to shoot the contestants in ‘reality situations’ and set up mini-fly packs with six to ten cameras to cover a ‘task delivery’ in the field. Then all of those cameras are able to come in when they shoot the boardroom material. They get tied into Bexel’s control room facilities and become part of the studio flypack as well. The Apprentice franchise is the reason we originally developed our custom harness system. The only cost effective solution for them was to allow the flexibility of an ENG camera into a flypack situation, and our harness has continued to serve us well on many other shows.”

Bexel has served as a resource to production companies from the initial days of reality television. “Since the dawn of the early MTV shows in the mid-1990′s, including Road Rules and many others, Bexel has been at the forefront of support for reality television,” concludes Bragg. “As the genre has evolved, so have the services and solutions that we offer. The depth of our reach into the reality market is really unmatched. Whether it’s a small two to three camera production, a 24 camera mega-show, the 90 robotics involved in Hell’s Kitchen, or the massive infrastructure of Utopia, Bexel covers the entire range.”

Registration for the 21st HPA Tech Retreat Now Open

The Bellwether Entertainment Technology Event Returns to Indian Wells
HPA Tech Retreat

(Los Angeles, CA) Today at the SMPTE Symposium, produced by the Hollywood Post Alliance (HPA(r), registration for the 2015 HPA Tech Retreat officially opened. For the 21st consecutive year, a veritable who’s who of engineering, technology, creativity and strategic business leaders will gather in the desert to discuss the trends and technologies of the future, while tackling head-on the issues of the present. The HPA Tech Retreat takes place at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells, near Palm Springs, CA, from February 9th to the 13th, 2015.

The HPA’s preeminent event enjoys a global reach, bringing together the thought leaders and senior practitioners driving the rapidly advancing entertainment technology landscape. The HPA Tech Retreat has consistently proven to be a crucial gathering where technological developments in production, post production and broadcast are unveiled, discussed and debated. During the Tech Retreat, attendees from the media and entertainment industries are uniquely able to share time and ideas with academics from around the world, scientists, and experts in technology from various disciplines. The environment is one of discovery and exploration.

Mark Schubin, who has led the programming for the HPA Tech Retreat for many years, notes, “Each year, we receive submissions from all over the world – about six times more than we can possibly use – and, based on what I’ve seen so far, it’s going to be hard to choose. So many new technologies have been introduced at the Retreat over the years that it’s tough to count them all.”

Over the course of its history, the HPA Tech Retreat has seen a number of breakthrough products and processes previewed in advance of their actual debuts. Surround headphones, full-color full-motion holograms, Sony’s HDCAM SR, SR Memory, targeted-ad production and distribution systems, Panasonic’s Varicam and stereoscopic cameras, Dolby’s high-dynamic-range video monitors, Pencil-beam microphones, and OLED monitors to name just a few of the many “firsts” to be unveiled at the Tech Retreat.

Leon Silverman, President of HPA, notes, “The Tech Retreat is the place you go to see history before it’s made, and to move and shake with the movers and shakers across the technology community. The subjects are always topical, but the real value of this event is the ability to share ideas and challenges, to understand from those who really know and get inspired. While I take away so much from this event each year in program content, an equally important take away comes from mingling with this amazing group – the teachers who teach the teachers. If you have not been to the Tech Retreat, you owe it to yourself to make a pilgrimage to the desert. If you have been, you know exactly what I’m talking about.”

Breakfast roundtables are also a popular part of every HPA Tech Retreat. Schubin comments, “Participants begin hashing out the future of media at the lively breakfast roundtables. Among the topics already confirmed for the 2015 event are net neutrality, content security, workflow complications, and a review of the legislative and regulatory environment.”

The HPA Tech Retreat is a not to be missed opportunity for industry professionals. The five day, multifaceted event includes dynamic conference sessions, a curated Demo Room with leading-edge technologies, networking events, and parties. The session schedule and programming information will be announced soon.

Earlier this year, SMPTE and HPA became official partners, moving forward with plans for full organizational consolidation by May 2015. Today’s Symposium is the first jointly produced HPA/ SMPTE event, an auspicious time to open registration for the HPA Tech Retreat.

The event has a history of selling out, and timely registration for the 2015 HPA Tech Retreat is recommended. Registration at Early Bird rates is now available, REGISTER. For more information on the event and sponsorship opportunities, visit www.hpaonline.com, call the HPA office at (213) 614-0860, or email Eileen Kramer at ekramer@hpaonline.com.

Comprehensive Cable and Connectivity Celebrates 40 Year Anniversary

Comprehensive-Default-Logo--RGB-300dpi-JPG

This September marks the 40th year anniversary for Comprehensive Cable and Connectivity Company.

In 1974, the professional audio visual market was just emerging and the new small businesses across the country known then as “audio visual dealers” had a problem:  Whom do they go to get the connectivity, accessories and supplies they need for the equipment they are selling to local media, schools and businesses? Lucky for the AV industry, Comprehensive had the solution.

Originally known as Comprehensive Video Supply, Comprehensive began as a single source of accessories and supplies for the then up-and-coming “professional audio-visual” market. Sold exclusively through resellers, Comprehensive products, which included their now world-famous cables and connectivity products, were a must-have for every audio-visual and computer reseller. The same was true for the Comprehensive 200-page product catalog. Dealers could use the Comprehensive catalog as an invaluable resource, and have it custom imprinted with their business name and contact information for distribution to customers. (Keep in mind – popular use of the internet was still more than 20 years away, and it would be another 33 years before the first iPhone was introduced. Even the VCR had yet to be released).

Scott Schaefer, Comprehensive’s current President, commented, “Comprehensive was there at the beginning of both AV and IT. It is Comprehensive’s experience, commitment to reliability, value and service that has kept B2B customers around the world coming back year after year. We are so grateful for the decades of support that our industries, resellers, customers and employees – past and present – have shown Comprehensive. Without them, we would not be here today, and we never forget that. We thank each and every one.”

Over the years, Comprehensive built the business with a strong reputation for “putting its money where its mouth is” service by stepping up and standing behind its resellers and products from the very beginning. One of many enduring legacies that Comprehensive has given the industry is the ‘Lifetime Warranty’ on cable assemblies, connectors and adapters. While a marketing commodity in today’s internet age, Comprehensive takes those words very seriously.

“Comprehensive customers need reliability and service above all else. Customers come to Comprehensive because they know they can count on us; every product, every order, every time. ” said General Sales Manager, Martin Fensterstock.

Today, Comprehensive has grown into one of the leading connectivity brands in the U.S. and around the world and their reliability and service have become legendary in the industry. Over the decades, Comprehensive has truly become the “go to” company for B2B audio-visual and I.T. professionals in every industry.

In fact, looking at a partial client list of Comprehensive customers reads like a “who’s who” of technology, business, media, entertainment and government. Clients include: Sony, Panasonic, Disney, Microsoft, Apple, Crestron, NASA, U.S. Army, Columbia University, NBC, ABC, CNN   just to name a few. A list of resellers and distributors reads much the same – Ingram Micro, Anixter, AVI-SPL, The Whitlock Group, HB Communications, B&H Photo, New Egg.com, and the list goes on.

Originally located in Northvale NJ, Comprehensive was purchased by VCOM International Media Corporation in 1995 and has continued to expand even during the recent recession. With continuous, growing demand for their cable and connectivity products and services, Comprehensive recently moved into new, larger headquarters in Fairfield NJ. They are also hiring with many positions available.

Listening to customer needs, something Comprehensive has done since the very beginning, has led to many new and innovative products. The most recent being the extremely successful Pro AV/IT Series HDMI Cable family, which are the onlyHDMI cables specifically designed for systems integrators, corporate, government, medical and other demanding B2B environments. Exclusive features such as ProGrip® Connector Technology, SureLength® Indicators with cable lengths easily visible on all connector heads, as well as color Identification and 4K X 2K support are just a few innovations that customers can expect from Comprehensive products.

In its first 40 years, Comprehensive became synonymous for reliable and innovative connectivity products that the audio-visual and I.T. professional could count on and that at least, is not something Mr. Schaefer thinks will change much over the next 40 years. “We are so excited about where Comprehensive and the market are going – 4K, HDBaseT, collaboration and the cloud, mobile, the opportunities are endless. Technology continues to evolve and advance and so does Comprehensive. We are doubling down on everything our customers have demanded from us in the past and building on it for tomorrow and beyond. The best is yet to come and like all things Comprehensive, you can count on that.”

DVIGear Launches DisplayPort Cables Supporting 4K / 60Hz

Expands Line of High Performance Copper Cables

Marietta, Georgia    October 2, 2014  –  DVIGear, a leading manufacturer of digital connectivity products, has announced the introduction and immediate availability of High Resolution™ DisplayPort Copper Cables.  These cables are designed to transport DisplayPort signals with bit rates up to 21.6 Gbps. over cable lengths of up to 15 meters (~ 50 ft.).  These cables support uncompressed DisplayPort resolutions up to 4096×2160 / 60 Hz.
DVIGear HR™ DisplayPort Copper CablesEngineered to Support Ultra High Resolutions at Long Distances

Long distance transport of high resolution DisplayPort signals over copper cables must overcome several challenges, such as insertion loss, differential skew and jitter.  Insertion loss is caused by cable capacitance, which acts as a low-pass filter, blocking higher frequency signal components from passing.  Skew occurs when the differential DisplayPort signals get delayed and become out of phase as they pass over a long cable.  Both factors contribute to increased digital jitter, which degrades the performance of the cable.  This jitter becomes more severe with higher resolutions, higher bit rates and longer cable distances.  Conventional cables that support lower resolutions at short distances are often unable to support the data rates required by higher resolutions at longer distances.  The resulting video can be disrupted by visual artifacts or may not be visible at all.

To overcome these challenges, DVIGear’s HR™ Series DisplayPort Cables are constructed using heavy gauge 24AWG copper wires that provide superior ruggedness and durability.  The heavier wire gauge has increased cross-sectional cable area, as well as decreased capacitance and lower differential skew, which allows high speed signals to pass with minimal jitter.  These features enable cable lengths of up to 15 meters (~ 50 ft.) with full compliance with DisplayPort 1.2 signal parameters.

Comprehensive Line of HDMI, DVI, and DisplayPort Copper Cables

For many years, system integrators, designers and consultants across the globe have trusted DVIGear’s line of copper cables thanks to their unsurpassed performance and reliability.  This comprehensive line supports high resolution HDMI, Single-Link DVI, Dual-Link DVI, and DisplayPort signals over long distances.  When coupled with DVIGear’s Active Cable Extender (ACE™) unit, the Super High Resolution (SHR™) Series HDMI, DVI, and DVI-DL cables support cable lengths up to 60 meters (~ 200 ft.).  All these cables are available in a wide range of lengths for immediate delivery.

Orlando, FL—Tributaries will showcase the new Series 6 Power Cable, the critical finishing touch for any system, in booth 1148 at the 2014 CEDIA Expo. Engineered exclusively for Tributaries by celebrated cable designer, Jay Victor, the Series 6 Power Cables, model 6P, will provide superior audio and video performance.

Tributaries Series 6 Power Cord

The Tributaries 6P cables are available in two versions; a 3-pole version, 6P-IEC for preamps and power amps and a 2-pole version, 6P-C7 for DVD players, CD players and set-top boxes.

Engineered with 14 gauge OFHC copper conductors, the Series 6 Power cables won’t starve power amplifiers of current. These cables are designed primarily for low frequency signals of 50/60Hz with conductor size and gauge combinations specific for this purpose. PVC dielectric materials were chosen to isolate vibration caused by alternating current from entering the signal path.

“For power cables, noise rejection is critical, and our Series 6 power cables rely on proprietary winding techniques and triple shielding to limit EMI egress and ingress thus ensuring the lowest noise floor for sensitive source components,” said Joe Perfito, President of Tributaries. “We strongly encourage dealers to include the Series 6 Power Cord as a regular add-on—hearing is believing, and we guarantee it provides an audible improvement.”

The Series 6 Power cables are available now in the following lengths: 3 foot (MSRP: $100), 6 foot (MSRP: $125) and 9 foot (MSRP: $150).

ICE Cable Systems Invests in the Latest REELEX Cable Coiling Machine

Newer technology features the latest optimizations in both hardware and software, and is customized for ICE Cable Systems’ products, making this premium wire & cable brand’s Big Mouth Payout bulk wire dispenser even better

Example of REELEX II wind pattern and dispenser Los Angeles, CA – August 25, 2014 – ICE Cable Systems, a leading manufacturer of premium low-voltage wire and cable products, today announced that it has invested in a new REELEX coiling machine for its factory.

REELEX’s tangle-free technology is a patented method of winding wire and cable into a figure-eight coil. In optimizing each coil, factors such as gain, payout hole control and the density of the wind, along with progressive coil tension, are all instrumental to producing tangle-free packages. This unique coil can only be produced on a specially-designed and patented REELEX machine and accompanying customized software.

The REELEX II coil within the bulk wire carton does not rotate during payout, nor does any inertia take place. Void of any moving parts, the coil dispenses from the inside-out with a clear path and avoids the typical twists, tangles and snags that plague bulk wire cartons.

The REELEX II technology is a key element in ICE Cable Systems Big Mouth Payout bulk wire carton, that along with other conveniences such as ascending and descending foot markers on the cable jackets, and extremely durable 24 kilogram burst-tested cardboard with dual-layer handles, have made it very popular among installers.

“We’ve taken something good and made it even better,” says ICE Cable Systems President Brian Rizzo. “We’ve invested in a machine that represents the state-of-the-art in wire and cable technology and custom-configured it for our cables. The net result for our dealers will be perfect pulls, from the first foot to the last.”

ICE Cable's Big Mouth Payout bulk wire carton

Timothy Copp, Vice President of REELEX notes, “Installers need to know there is knock-off pull-box packaging out there. Non-REELEX coils might look and act like REELEX, but are prone to tangling, cable deformities, and can cause damage to the cable – leading to performance issues.”

For more information please contact ICE Cable Systems at 310.444.1950.
