Sound Devices Unveils New PIX-DOCK at the 2012 NAB Show

Data Dock for PIX-CADDY with Thunderbolt Connection

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 18, 2012 — Sound Devices, experts in portable audio and video products for field production, unveils PIX-DOCK at the 2012 NAB Show (Booth C2546). PIX-DOCK connects drives mounted in a Sound Devices PIX-CADDY to computers equipped with Thunderbolt™ high-speed I/O over a single Thunderbolt cable.<

The PIX-CADDY, which is used to connect SSD volumes to all PIX recorders, is an SSD mounting accessory that also operates as a multi-format interface to attach the SSD to a computer for file transfer and management. With the introduction of the PIX-DOCK, users can now leverage Thunderbolt’s fast transfer speeds between drives and computers. Thunderbolt offers up to 10 Gbps interconnection speeds, making the file copying of large-capacity drives fast and easy. When using fast storage drives, its high throughput allows realtime playback of multiple streams of high-data-rate video.

The PIX-DOCK provides both power and data over a single cable and is compatible with SATA drives. PIX-DOCK includes a six-foot Thunderbolt cable that connects to the PIX-CADDY using its eSATAp connection. It also offers a secure, latching connection to PIX-CADDY, and its weighted base prevents sliding on desktop surfaces.

“PIX-DOCK simplifies and speeds the transfer and management of files when using our PIX recorders,” says Jon Tatooles, managing director at Sound Devices. “By utilizing Thunderbolt, we are able provide our users with blazing fast and reliable transfers.”

The PIX 220, PIX 240 and PIX 260 record directly to QuickTime using Apple’s ProRes or Avid’s DNxHD codecs. Since PIX recorders use ProRes and DNxHD, files recorded in the field can be used directly in post production, making the workflow simple and fast. The PIX 240 and PIX 260 add even more flexibility, with their time code, sync generator, and simultaneous SDI and HDMI outputs. All PIX recorders bring the company’s award-winning audio expertise and performance to their video products.

Sound Devices, LLC designs and manufactures portable audio mixers, digital audio recorders, and digital video recorders and related equipment for feature film, episodic television, documentary, news-gathering, and acoustical test and measurement applications. The thirteen-year old company designs and manufactures from their Reedsburg, Wisconsin headquarters with additional offices in Madison, WI and Highland Park, IL. Clark Expands HFC Series of SMPTE Hybrid Fiber Camera Cables

Clark Wire & Cable™, NAB Booth #C8137, is introducing an improved and expanded line of its HFC Series of SMPTE 311M hybrid fiber camera cables. Designed as a turn-key solution for broadcast camera systems, Clark’s HFC Series now includes three distinct products for portable, permanent installation and direct burial applications – all with high-strength core constructions.

Clark’s original HFCTP studio and field SMPTE 311M camera cable has been improved for both greater durability and flexibility. Now featuring tactical-grade tight buffers, the new HFCTP fiber elements have three times the tensile strength for added ruggedness. For improved flexibility, the outer jacket of the HFCTP utilizes a new TPE jacket compound that is abrasion resistant and exceptionally flexible, even in low temperature environments.

New to Clark’s SMPTE product line are the HFCPV and HFCDB cables. These versions are specifically designed for permanent installation applications requiring a riser rated or a direct burial construction. The HFCPV features a PVC outer jacket and a UL riser rated CMR listing for permanent installation in most in-wall and conduit locations. For direct burial applications in underground or partially exposed environments, Clark’s new HFCDB features a puncture resistant polyethylene jacket and water blocking tape barrier that absorbs moisture if the jacket is penetrated.

All Clark HFC Series hybrid fiber cables feature precision specifications that meet or exceed SMPTE 311M-2009 requirements for optical and electrical loss, mechanical strength, and environmental performance. For ease of installation all Clark HFC Series cables feature a unique directional arrow printed on the cable jacket that identifies the gender end of the cable. This feature simplifies termination by labeling the correct end for connector termination and offers the user a quick visual identification when running portable cable assemblies.

“We are excited to announce the expansion of our HFC Series of SMPTE 311M cables,” stated Scott Fehl, Product Manager for Clark Wire & Cable. “With the expansion of our SMPTE camera cable product line we are able to offer a complete hybrid fiber solution for almost any application – studio, production, remote broadcast, and stadium. Built for broadcast-grade performance, Clark SMPTE camera cables have a proven history of being exceptionally flexible, user friendly, and durable. Combined with our ModBox™ modular rack system and in-house custom cable assembly service, Clark delivers a complete SMPTE hybrid fiber system uniquely built to the customer’s requirements.”

Gepco® International Debuts RunOne™ Powered Cables with Live Demo at NAB 2012

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, APRIL 16, 2012 — Gepco International (NAB Booth #C8508), an industry-leading brand in professional audio and video interconnect products, is pleased to introduce and demonstrate a new line of powered speaker cables at the NAB Show April 16-19, 2012. The new Gepco® Brand RunONE™ Powered Speaker Cables combine audio and power, along with optional data, under a single durable, yet flexible jacket. With multiple uses for corporations, DJs, lighting rigs and tours, RunONE allows the user to pull a single cable in place of multiple cables, providing a portable and neat solution that saves time and hassle.

Each RunONE cable combines one channel of power with two, eight or 12 channels of 110 Ohm balanced audio for line level, mic level or digital AES audio signals and can be used with self-powered speakers or in DMX lighting control. Using real-time analytical software, Gepco will demonstrate the superior characteristics of Gepco’s RunONE cables by comparing them to similar products. The software will measure handling noise, interference and frequency performance for differences you can not only hear, but see.

Additional configurations of RunONE include two channels of Category 5e cable that can be used for data drops in remote power and audio applications. Snakes with optional data can also be used for digital audio transmission while sending power to Front of House (FOH) for remote locations. Shielding around the power channels eliminates power noise from interrupting the audio/data signal, ensuring high-quality performance.

Terminated with industry-standard connectors, RunONE cables offer the option of Edison, IEC and Neutrik® powerCON® connectors for the power channel; 3-pin XLR, 5-pin XLR (for DMX lighting), TRS and Neutrik® convertCON® connectors for audio channels; and RJ45 and Neutrik® etherCON® connectors for optional data channels. RunONE cables are available in pre-defined and custom configurations.

“The RunONE cables are a great solution for anyone looking to save time,” said Joe Zajac, Market Development Manager for Gepco® Brand Products. “With up to 12 channels of audio combined with power and the optional two channels of data, the RunONE cables will also provide for much cleaner set-ups.”

Molloy College Addresses Integrated Media Technologies Upgrade at NAB

“Tomorrow’s Needs Today: Making the Argument for Upgrade”

Leading liberal arts institution, Molloy College, of Long Island, NY, will be participating in the Broadcast Education Association panel discussion during NAB, “Tomorrow’s Needs Today: Making the Argument for Upgrade,” on Wednesday, April 18 at The Las Vegas Hilton.   Molloy College first met with Integrated Media Technologies, Inc. (IMT) at NAB 2011 to determine the best way to upgrade their SD production facilities to full HD specs.

As media technologies continue to evolve and previous generations become obsolete, communications programs in small schools are reaching the threshold of maintaining traditional curriculum while deciding what new media to adopt and use. The BEA panel discusses strategies in proposing new media upgrades and the struggles of adopting a new program. Panelists are currently upgrading or have recently upgraded their traditional communications curriculum.
Moderator: James Cohen, Molloy College
Panelists: Matthew Tullis, Ashland University
Thomas Kenny, Molloy College

“We chose IMT after speaking with Greg Pocali at NAB 2011 last year in Las Vegas,” explained Thomas Kenny, Molloy Adjunct Instructor.  “We went to NAB to research gear and materials needed to transfer our SD studio to HD.  This included cameras, switchers, storage devices, etc.  After meeting with Greg, he pointed us in the right direction and told us exactly what we needed for a transfer.  Greg is extremely knowledgeable as an engineer and we felt comfortable with him and the staff at IMT.”

“We are upgrading our facility,” he continued, “because it is in standard-definition and at this day and age, everyone should have a high-definition facility.  If my iPad can shoot video in HD, then the studio for the students should have that capability as well.  We plan on using the facility for educational purposes to help  our students get a career in media production.  Also, this could [allow] students to start their own productions outside of class for news programs and various shows.”

Media Production Curriculum
Molloy College has had a Media Production Curriculum for several years.  Over the last two years, the college has changed its curriculum to match the change in technology.  Last year, Molloy developed and implemented a brand new minor in New Media.  This includes combining web and television – students learn how to create apps, design a website, and create web television while utilizing all mediums (iPad, Internet, television, mobile device, etc.).

Thomas Kenny concluded, “The discussion for me is based on two areas.  First is the need to have an updated, high-definition facility for our students to nurture successful careers in media/new media production. This is the area where we worked closely with Integrated Media Technologies, Inc.  The second phase of the discussion, again from the Molloy College perspective, is updating the curriculum to meet today’s standards. In today’s media culture, students creating film/television also need to include social media, websites, apps, etc., to the mix in order to have successful careers.  We are speaking about how we designed the courses for the Major & Minor.  Plus, we will tie in how both the new media Major/Minor uses the updated HD facility.

WHAT: “Tomorrow’s Needs Today: Making the Argument for Upgrade”
WHEN: Wednesday April 18, 2012 12:00pm – 1:15pm
WHERE: Las Vegas Hilton, Conference Room 1

IMT at NAB 2012, April 16-18, Las Vegas
IMT will be hosting a number of technology briefings in their hospitality suite on the second floor of the Renaissance Hotel located at 3400 Paradise Road. The hotel is conveniently located across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Please contact IMT’s Marketing Coordinator, Kate Metzger, for more information – kate@imtglobalinc.com.
