HARMAN’s JBL M2 Master Reference Monitors Prove “Pitch Perfect” for Music Mixer Joseph Magee

NORTHRIDGE, California — Music mixer Joseph Magee, whose impressive credits include Saving Mr. Banks, Pitch Perfect, High Fidelity, Into the Wild, The Muppets, Spider-man 3 and many more, is currently on location in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, mixing music for the feature film, Pitch Perfect 2. For this music-heavy project, Magee is putting HARMAN’s JBL Professional flagship large-format M2 Master Reference Monitors to the test. Recently signed by Hollywood’s TODD-SOUNDELUX, where he is responsible for the company’s expanding music services, Magee chose the M2 system for projects at TODD-SOUNDELUX’s Hollywood facility. For Pitch Perfect 2, Magee transported his JBL M2 monitors along with a pair of JBL LSR308 studio monitors to Baton Rouge, where the film is in production. The music recording studio for the project was built specifically for the film in an existing 4-story warehouse structure.

With the objective of recording 95 percent of all the on-camera a cappella performances in a new, untested studio environment, Magee relies on the M2’s ability to provide exceptional performance in any production environment. “I’ve been using the M2 monitors in my music dub room at TODD-SOUNDELUX and I’m now getting accustomed to using them on the road,” Magee said. “I think a lot of people perceive the M2’s as monitors that are meant to be permanently installed in a control room, tuned to the room and then left alone. But the reality is these loudspeakers sound great out of the box, so taking them to Baton Rouge was an easy decision.” With the dynamic range needed for film production yet with a footprint of only 20 feet wide by 14 feet deep, the M2 is finding its way into smaller rooms where traditional cinema speakers are prohibitive. With included room EQ, the M2 system can deliver accurate response in any mix environment.

Having used other large-format studio monitors, in Magee’s opinion, JBL’s patented-pending Image Control Waveguide, coupled with JBL’s patented low-distortion D2 high-frequency driver sets the M2 apart from the pack. “The waveguide is so darn fast, I’m hearing things I haven’t heard before in my mixes and I’m hearing things differently—in a good way,” he said. “At the TODD-SOUNDELUX facilities, all the engineers who have come through have been shocked at how authoritative these M2 loudspeakers are and they’ve been amazed at the clarity of the system.”

In addition to the M2 system, Magee uses a pair of JBL’s powered 3 Series LSR308 studio monitors as his near-field listening system. In a portable, “bookshelf”-size format, and available at an entry-level price, the 3 Series studio monitors share the Image Control Waveguide technology developed for the M2 to provide detailed imaging. “In all honesty, when I was first auditioning the M2 system at TODD-SOUNDELUX, I didn’t fully understand what I was working with,” Magee noted. “But then I worked with the 308 monitors at home and it all clicked for me. I simply wasn’t used to the imaging and level of detail these speakers provide.”

To further meet Magee’s needs, JBL custom-designed a panel in its HARMAN HiQnet System Architect™ software that enables Magee to quickly create a simple, 4-band Room EQ in the DSP of the Crown I-Tech 5000 HD amplifiers being used to power the system.

Looking towards the future, Magee sees no boundaries for the M2. “I envision a lot of opportunities for different applications with the M2,” he said.

Martin Audio AQs Excel At Amble Links Holiday Park

Country and leisure park operators Park Leisure recently undertook a major upgrade of its Amble Links ‘owners-only’ holiday park on the Northumberland, England coast.

Preferred AV integrators Promotiontime NE carried out the technology design and outfitting of its main entertainment areas, The Links Owners Only Bar & Entertainment Lounge and refurbished Old Storehouse restaurant/bar, exclusively using a Martin Audio AQ solution for all of its requirements.

Brian Graham, who took over Promotiontime NE ten years ago, has been a frequent user of Martin Audio systems over the years, particularly the Blackline series, but the compact AQ architectural range has opened up a number of new opportunities for him.

“Martin Audio is generally our ‘go to’ brand for most requirements above a basic bar, and I would probably have specified Blackline again for the entertainment room. But when we heard the AQ series, we knew this would be equal to the demands of the room.”

The stage system needed to reinforce small acts, as well as a resident DJ and karaoke, but also needed to be used for larger performances when required.

After sampling the AQ series Graham specified a pair of AQ28’s, with dual 8in drivers, one each side of the stage, as the main front-facing PA with an AQ10 on each wing providing outfills. Recessed into the stage on each side is an AQ215 (2×15) bass enclosure with a 42-way patch so that incoming productions carrying their own mixing console can plug straight in and override the house desk.

The Old Storehouse is divided into two areas; a restaurant and bar, with background music fed to eight AQ6 in the main restaurant and a pair of AQ5s in the overspill/annex area, while the dedicated bar area is served by an additional combination of AQ8, AQ6 and pair of AQ112 (1×12) subs.

The music extends to the outside patio area where Brian Graham has specified four Martin Audio C115 surface-mount weather-resistant speakers.

The entire system is powered by Martin Audio MA5.2K, MA4.8Q and MA2.8Q amplifiers and fed by a 16×16 audio routing matrix, which allows any sound source to be switched to any zone via the Martin Audio Engineer 818 DSP. Limiting and EQ settings are also stored in the Engineer, with inputs recalled and switched between the different operating modes via the Control4 audio and lighting environmental control platform (linked to Mode dimming packs for the lighting).

The installation needed to offer ease of use and the site is configured so that all audio and vision can be switched and controlled from two touch screens, one located in the main bar and the other in the performance area, to allow intuitive use throughout the complex.

In summary, Brian Graham confirmed, “In addition to raising the performance level, we had to make the installation look sleek which the AQ certainly does. And with only around 10 ft. ceiling height in the entertainment room, we are able to run the AQ28s in landscape orientation, flush against the ceiling. It was the perfect solution.

“Everything works seamlessly; the client is absolutely delighted, the feedback has been great and we have had nothing but positive comments.”

HARMAN’s Martin Professional Exterior 400 Image Projectors Create A Unique Fireworks Simulation at Russia’s Belgorod Airport

BELGOROD, Russia — As part of a Russian program devoted to the modernization of transportation infrastructure, the newly built Belgorod Airport was constructed to be one of the most attractive and convenient hubs in Russia’s Central Black Earth Region. In addition to the airport’s focus on innovative architecture, high-quality finish materials and optimized infrastructure, Moscow-based STK Heliocity was brought in to develop a unique combination of architectural and artistic lighting for multiple scenarios: everyday usage, night time usage, and holidays/special occasions. In order to implement lighting designs for holidays and other celebrations at the airport, Heliocity installed 16 of HARMAN’s Martin Professional Exterior 400 Image Projectors.

Heliocity’s design features traditional symbols, multiple color transitions¬—in the style of the Belgorod region’s coat of arms (azure to green and gold)—and a special fireworks element. As a tribute to the region’s unique and proud military history, the fireworks are a complex design element that feature dynamic flashes and simulated flying sparks from an explosion of color to create the effect of fireworks on the arches above the airport’s main entrance.

To complete their design, the team at Heliocity needed to deploy a reliable weatherproof fixture that could create bright light projections yet be extremely energy-efficient. The company turned to Martin’s Exterior 400 IP in order to meet these detailed requirements.

“After analyzing several fixtures we decided on Martin Professional’s Exterior 400 IP due to its durability and convenient programming capabilities,” commented Anton Karpun, Project Designer, STK Heliocity. “To create the fireworks scene we ordered a special set of gobos for firework imitation. The gobos paired with the Exterior 400’s extremely robust light allowed us to successfully create a beautiful scenography of dynamic color that can be easily activated with a single button.”

Martin Professional’s Exterior 400 Image Projector is a powerful tool for integrating textures, patterns, and graphics in outdoor lighting designs and is capable of producing over 7000 lumens of extremely bright light projections. The fixture also features advanced LED technology for unparalleled energy-efficiency, a rugged IP65 housing, and up to six customizable gobos, eight customizable colors and a range of pre-programmable effects, from continuous image rotation to focus and dimming.

“We needed to develop a simple scheme for the user that would only be utilized on holidays and special occasions such as VIP guests or international delegation arrivals,” explained Karpun. “Our design would not have been successful without the help of Martin’s Exterior 400 Image Projector. The custom capabilities and LED technology of the fixture have made this project a true success!”

DPA Microphones Helps Steve Browell Capture Unique Car Sounds

Recording audio for film and TV within the confines of a car is hard enough, but actually capturing the sheer range of sounds that comprise car noise is an entirely different level of challenge. This, however, is something of a specialty for freelance sound effects editor Steve Browell who uses a range of DPA microphones and a variety of techniques to achieve spectacular results.

Browell, whose recent projects have included recording sound effects for Scarlett Johansson’s latest film Under the Skin, directed by Jonathan Glazer, says: “What I love about the job is that it’s so varied. From enhancing the physical sounds on screen to bringing inanimate objects to life; from designing effects to add to the emotion of the story to recording original sounds for each film, there is always a new challenge.”

Browell’s work involves many different locations, from race-tracks to mansion houses, from anechoic chambers to scrap yards. With him go a matched pair of DPA’s d:dicate™ 4011C Compact Cardioid Recording Microphones and a selected pair of d:screet™ 4061 Omnidirectional Miniature Microphones, which were supplied by DPA’s UK distributor Sound Network. Browell also owns a pair of d:dicate 4021 Compact Cardioid Recording Microphones in an DPA X/Y setup that have been customised to fit into a Rycote windshield.

“I have always liked the sound DPA microphones capture,” he says. “When I started my career I was involved in a lot of music recording and I can remember the first time I used a pair of DPA d:dicate 4011s when they were still Brüel and Kjaer. I loved the amazingly detailed and natural sound they were able to capture; it was like hearing the sound from the live source again. From then on I have always wanted to own my own pair.”

Browell first started experimenting with car recordings when he was asked to capture car sounds for a film he was working on. “Cars are fascinating machines that create a symphony of sound,” he says. “Also I liked the physical challenge of where and how to place microphones on a moving vehicle and still get a decent sounding recording with as little vibration and wind buffeting as possible.”

He explains that much of the action in Under the Skin takes place in the interior of a Mercedes Sprinter van. “To get a really authentic sound and the right coverage I spent a day recording the van with a multi-mic setup covering different aspects of the interior, the engine and the exhaust.”

Browell has been able to hone his techniques, not to mention widen the library of different cars he has captured, with work on the Need for Speed computer game franchise. As he says, though, it’s a delicate balance between the shielding stopping wind noise and it starting to colour the source sound.

“I also had to find materials that would withstand the high temperatures and a few Rycote windshields got burnt in the process,” he explains. “The McLaren MP4 12c was particularly bad for this; on overrun you can get a flame of three foot out of the exhaust. It can also be a problem fixing the microphones onto the cars and not damaging the paint and bodywork, which is important when some of them are valued at over $1m. Each car’s shape is so different and I need to be extremely flexible with my methods to get the microphones into a sweet spot: out of the direct airflow around the car but also avoiding some of the high temperatures and trying to dampen some of the vibration.”

For the future he says he would definitely like to own more DPA microphones, but adds that remembering petrol helps, too…

Amptec and DPA Host Microphone Workshop With Balthazar

Belgium rock band Balthazar recently threw open the doors to one of their sound checks so that 45 audio engineers and musicians in Brussels could see how DPA microphones are used during the band’s live shows.

This unique workshop, organised by DPA’s Belgium distributor Amptec, was supported by Balthazar’s Front of House engineer Filip Tanghe who took part in a question and answer session with the invited audience, during which he discussed microphone and mixing techniques.

Dany Meeuwissen, Pro Audio Sales Manager at Amptec, says: “The workshop took place at the Ancienne Belgique concert hall where the band were playing a gig later that evening. After a general introduction to DPA’s microphone technology, the audience was able to listen to the band soundchecking and hear solo examples of the various DPA microphones that they use on stage. These include four d:facto™ Vocal Microphones, two d:dicate™ 4011C Compact Recording Microphones, which are used for overheads, and three d:vote™ 4099 Instrument Microphones, which are used on the snare and floor tom drums.”

Originally from Ghent and Kortrijk, Balthazar is a five-piece rock band that has been receiving fantastic reviews across Europe as the support act for Editors. The band is now touring in its own right and has made DPA microphones an integral part of its tour equipment.

“When it comes to vocal microphones, DPA’s d:facto is my first choice because it has such great resistance to feedback without sacrificing any detail,” says Filip Tanghe. “The sound it produces is very full and rounded, with no harshness at all. I find it incredibly musical.”

Tanghe engineers approximately 130 live gigs a year for Balthazar and now uses DPA microphones all the time. When Balthazar are not touring he works with Belgian singer songwriter Hannelore Bedert, who tours with an 11-piece band consisting of horns, strings, drums, guitars, keyboards and backing vocalists.

“I use DPA microphones for Hannelore’s live gigs as well and they certainly make those set-ups a lot easier,” Tanghe says.

Euroshow Deploys HARMAN’s Martin Professional To Bring A Fairy Tale To Life At Moscow’s Olympisky Arena

AARHUS, Denmark — In conjunction with the beginning of Russia’s longest school holiday, Moscow’s famous Olympisky Arena hosted a 2-week children’s project, Circus of Ded Moroz – 2 (Father Frost’s Circus), at the end of December 2013. In order to showcase a stunning, mystical fairy tale light show, Euroshow and lighting designer Alexey Zhuravlev deployed a world-class lighting system featuring HARMAN’s Martin fixtures.

Euroshow supplied lighting fixtures for the event surrounding a large Christmas tree which included: 36 MAC Viper Profile, 20 MAC 2000 Wash XB, 12 MAC III Air FX, 48 MAC Aura, 96 MAC 101, five Atomic 3000 DMX, 30 RUSH MH3 Beam and three Jem Ready 365 Hazer fixtures.

The New Year’s project for children at Olympisky has gained a traditional status already, but for Zhuravlev, it was his debut. Producers of the event knew about Zhuravlev due to his successful work with numerous clubs and concerts, so they invited him to implement the basic idea of creating a dynamic event that children would love and remember.

The main story of the Circus of Ded Moroz – 2 was influenced by an enormous event – the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Fairy tale characters from different stories and different countries met each other on the arena space to compete for the highest sports prizes. This story needed a bright and colorful setting, something totally different from traditional theatrical drama.

Zhuravlev analyzed the individual elements of the script together with the director of the show, highlighting the key moments and offering an individual decoration for each. “I had a few ideas for this show,” explained Zhuravlev. “For example, I put the MAC 101’s around the arena at the bottom and made a ‘mirrored’ installation at the top, so that each fixture was above another fixture. This scheme allowed us to create a lot of different, interesting lighting pictures for numerous events.”

Because some events in the program featured aerialists in the space below the roof, it was necessary to change the lighting concept and make accents on the flights in midair. Zhuravlev chose the powerful MAC III AirFX fixtures based on a 1500W lamp and the new Jem Ready 365 fog generators in order to work with the challenges.

“It is my first work experience with MAC III AirFX”, Zhuravlev explained. “I had seen these fixtures before and I have known what I could get from them. Of course, I was attracted by their functionality to create midair and beam effects. MAC III AirFX is a perfect fixture to make magnificent decor for aerialists’ routines. Besides, these fixtures are very bright, so in other words, they were the perfect solution for this project.”

For the circus arena area, Zhuravlev deployed the MAC 2000 Wash XB, MAC Aura and MAC 101, along with the MAC Viper Profile with the gobo #1, which served as the main lighting tool.

“In the stage design we rarely use this gobo, but in this project it was very useful for me,” Zhuravlev said. “The action takes place in a circular arena, and it is very difficult to make smooth wash effects and stay within the borders, and I had to think about how not to confuse the audience. With gobo #1 of MAC Viper Profile, I could wash the necessary parts of the arena without compromising the main texture aspect.”

The MAC Viper also played a familiar role for Zhuravlev, creating bright and powerful projections that draw beautiful pictures on the surface.

“This fixture is very bright with excellent projection quality,” he continued. “Of course, I used this instrument at 100%. For example, when I needed to ‘move’ artists on the pavement in Sweden, I used gobo-imitating pavement, creating a very realistic effect. Another example is a traditional Russian theme, followed with the appearance of Samovar with cups. By the way, MAC Viper Profile has a very suitable gobo for this scene, as if designed especially for Russia.”

UK Studio Rimshot Productions Continues its Dreams with Decades-Lasting HARMAN AKG Microphones

KENT, United Kingdom – As one of the few boutique music production companies operating in the Kent countryside of the UK, Rimshot Productions is uniquely positioned to cater to a wide variety of recording artists. Having provided production, studio and mastering services for many years, owner Mike Thorne has equipped the studios at Rimshot Productions with AKG microphones to ensure world-class quality of service throughout the company’s history.

Situated in the countryside just an hour away from London, Rimshot Productions was built a few years ago, and relied completely on word of mouth to grow to the dependable facility it is today: a large and creative space where international clients achieve the best productions and recordings. Thorne has complete confidence that his in-house studio offers world-class recording and provides the requisite equipment for any artist to succeed.

The studio at Rimshot Productions features a pair of AKG C414 B-ULS microphones, which have reached legendary status since their introduction in 1971; a D112 egg-shaped bass microphone perfect for bass instruments; a D12 large-diaphragm microphone that makes everything from the drums to the vocals sound better; and C1000 microphones that can withstand any level of vocal abuse.

“I’ve acquired these microphones over the years and slowly built up my AKG collection,” said Thorne. “During my 20-plus years of experience, I haven’t had an AKG microphone fail on me, as they truly last forever. I’ve really grown to appreciate the quality of AKG products.”

When asked what prompted him to purchase AKG microphones, Thorne quotes from personal experience that “during sessions at another studio, a guy had AKG C414 microphones, which sounded absolutely great!”

Just like his studio and the services Thorne offers, the quality of AKG speaks for itself and is appreciated by Thorne’s clients. “The D12 is what I like to call the ‘make it better’ microphone,” said Thorne. “I like to use it for vocals, drums, and all kinds of recording, because it produces truly exceptional sound quality. As for the C1000, these things just don’t break! They were my first microphones and have been used for recordings for 15 years.”

AKG is known for its award-winning quality in both sound and build. There is no replacement for a microphone that will last this long, and yet maintain its output consistency. Companies like Rimshot Productions rely on the belief that musicians can record an electrifying track with the AKG C414, or kick up a crisp beat with the AKG D112.

“I like the multiple pickup patterns of the C414 AKG microphone,” Thorne continued. “There’s loads of space in the studio, so we can be creative with microphone placements. I don’t have to put the microphone very close to a specific instrument. This results in a sound with more depth and character.”

“There is a lot to be said about the consistency of these microphones,” Thorne concluded. “They’re indeed the workhorses that I expect them to be and work great every time.”

At the operator location, each Avio receiver unit connects two 1920×1080 Samsung® monitors and high-speed USB 2.0 peripherals including a keyboard, mouse, CD/DVD burner, and external hard disc drive (HDD). According to Luke McKew, Technology Manager at Nova Entertainment, the new workspace allows users to productively record, edit, and mix the latest audio projects.

“Working off a higher-resolution setup makes it easier for the audio engineers to see small changes within the editing software, while the ability to quickly burn a CD or plug in an external HDD without having to walk back to the control room greatly improves workflow and efficiency,” said McKew. “We highly recommend Avio to other stations that are looking to upgrade or install KVM solutions for their own audio production facilities as it is a truly worthwhile investment.”

Boulevard Pro Adds L-ACOUSTICS KARA System to Rental Inventory

Anthony (left) and James Cioffi

RIDGEFIELD PARK, New Jersey — Boulevard Pro, a leading NYC metro area audio systems and backline provider, has been assuring clients of great sound since 1986, when owners Anthony and James Cioffi came off the road as musicians, backing up artists like Gary U.S. Bonds and Mink Deville. It’s where they learned the value of having the right technology products for the markets they were working in, from renting out classic Fender Twin amps that clients of their rehearsal studio business in the 1980s knew to come to them for, to more recently having the in-demand products and systems that their live event and touring customers require. Boulevard Pro’s latest addition to that latter category has been the recent addition of a full L-ACOUSTICS KARA package. more
