Leading Technologies Reports Big Demand for HARMAN’s Studer OnAir Consoles

MILAN, Italy – Leading Technologies (LT), distributor for HARMAN’s Studer in Italy, has reported significant new sales of the company’s OnAir series of consoles—and in particular the OnAir 3000. The series offers one of the widest ranges of digital on-air and production consoles on the market.

Based on a modular design, the Studer OnAir 3000 is aimed at the medium to upper segment of the radio market — particularly network broadcast stations—and incorporates the familiar “Touch’n’Action” using colour GUI screens.

One of the latest high profile sales has been to independent broadcaster, Radio Italia, in their new digital terrestrial studios close to Milano. This was the first private radio station to use a format dedicated only to Italian music, and it broadcasts nationwide.

The station previously had a Studer OnAir 2000 and recognised that the time to upgrade was long overdue. As a result, Leading Technologies provided them with an OnAir 3000 and a central SCore Live router in the main studio, along with a new OnAir 1500 in each of the four production areas, after decommissioning their former digital desks.

Another multiple OnAir 3000 sale has been to Radio Maria in Erba, the largest FM church broadcaster in Europe whose origins date back to 1987. Today there are 65 Radio Maria stations broadcasting on five continents, with 19 radio in the Americas, 19 in Europe, 18 in Africa, four in Asia and one in Oceania, with more than five radios for linguistic minorities and a twinning in Lebanon. Their mandate is for Christians anywhere in the world to be able to listen to the voice of Radio Maria in their native language.

The association with Leading Technologies began back in 2005. But according to sales manager, Lucio Gerelli, this time around they faced heavy competition from other vendors before the decision was made in Studer’s favour. Sensitive pricing was an important factor but the technically important issue was the simplicity of the interface which was much more intuitive than the other console they reviewed.

The Studer digital architecture occupies a brand-new building housing eight studios—each equipped with a new OnAir 3000—and a large central router.

Two of the OnAir 3000 consoles are 18-fader desks and the remaining six are 12-fader consoles. One important factor in the equation was system integrator, Valter Agnesani, from AVS Sistemi, as Lucio explained.

“It was important to the customer to have both us and the SI based nearby as Radio Maria does not have trained engineers, but with the simple interface it has been easy for their technical manager to get into the system configuration.” Onsite training was provided by Leading Technologies’ technical manager Mauro Bucchia and Roberto Frigario, who provided an easy desk configuration.

The OnAir 3000s handle a lot of live transmission but they also make heavy use of the telephone hybrid—with a minimum of four to six lines for telephone-in—and Codec for SDN. “Because of the time differences around the world you can say it’s a virtually 24/7 operation,” summarises Lucio. “It’s entirely on-air, with only speech and IP transmission from other countries and churches. With all the integration and interconnection of the desk It’s one of the biggest systems we have provided.”

Leading Technologies have also undertaken two new installations for Group Elemedia which operates some of Italy’s largest radio stations, including Radio DJ, Radio Capital and M20, between Milano and Rome.

In Rome, Leading Technologies have extended their long relationship with the organisation by providing an OnAir 3000 for each of the nine studios, with a central router and two OnAir 1500s in the production studio.

According to Lucio Gerelli they had been operating on antiquated control equipment, including a 14-year-old Soundcraft SAC200 broadcast mixer. “We are upgrading one studio each month, working with their technical manager Gianpiero Mastripieri month, and in March next year they will take an entire router,” he says.

Elsewhere, two further OnAir 3000s have been installed at Radio 24 in Milano along with four OnAir 1500s and a central router, while their rolling programme for national broadcaster, RAI’s regional stations has extended with a new 15-fader OnAir 3000 (12 + 3) installed in Bari—backed up by a technical course provided by LT.

In conclusion, Lucio Gerelli says, “The OnAir series is proving so popular because of the good work we put in, as distributors, with the analogue consoles back in the 1990s. We have now found an equivalent digital solution with a high quality product.”

“The most important factors are (a) the simple configuration; (b) if there’s any problems there is always someone on hand, and finally, with a number of OnAir solutions there is the possibility of I/O sharing which is easy with the correct configuration.”

Red TX Help Capture This Year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize

Broadcast audio specialist Red TX provided the technical facilities to capture the audio at this year’s Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which took place at London’s Roundhouse on October 30th.

Hosted by Lauren Laverne, this year’s Awards Show featured live performances by many of the 2013 shortlisted artists including Arctic Monkeys, Laura Mvula, Jake Bugg, Rudimental and overall winner James Blake.

Red TX worked closely with PA company Plus4Audio and Outside Broadcast company CTV to deliver television coverage of this prestigious event, which was broadcast on both More4 and Channel 4.

Barclaycard Mercury Prize Executive Producer Dan Ford says: “Red TX was commissioned to handle the broadcast audio because the company has a strong reputation for delivering great live sound. We worked with them last year and were very happy with the results they achieved. It therefore it made sense to invite them back as part of our tried and tested production team.”

For this event, Red TX supplied its Red II music recording truck which is designed to cater for 3D and 7.1 surround sound productions. Sound Supervisor Simon Wall, now based at London’s The Hospital Club, has been mixing the audio for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize for a number of years and once again he was the man behind the controls of red II’s Studer Vista 8 mixing console. Red TX’s engineer Ollie Nesham was also on board acting as his technical assistant.

Nesham says: “A great deal of preparation went into this show. We arrived at the venue on Monday 28th and spent the next three days setting up, rehearsing and carrying out extensive sound checks to make sure everything was perfect. There were two stages, each with 48 lines of splits that we plugged up to so that all the inputs were available on the desk at the same time. This enabled us to create a set-up for each part of the show, in which typically three bands were performing, so that Simon only had to recall one set-up for each part and one snapshot for each band. Working this way also allows Simon to line check all the bands in each break, which gave us confidence as we could check that we had all the inputs for each band before we started that part of the show.”

Sam Dunlop, Studio Manager of the Hospital Club Studio, adds: “The Hospital Club treasures its longstanding relationship with Dan Ford and the Barclaycard Mercury Prize, which we have collaborated on since 2007. Throughout that time, Simon has mixed all the Sessions filmed at the Club, as well as the Prize gigs and all the live mixes on the awards night itself. We’re extremely lucky to have him, and it’s a privilege to be able to work together to produce such fantastic new music content throughout the year with Dan and his team.”

3G Productions Provides Creative Audio For Jabbawockeez At Luxor

Las Vegas, NV––When popular hip-hop dance crew Jabbawockeez show Prism opened the new 850-seat theater at the Luxor Hotel and Casino, 3G Productions was the first choice to design and install the audio system.

Winners of the first season of America’s First Dance Crew, Jabbawockeez has appeared in commercials for Pepsi and Gatorade and performed on Dancing with the Stars, So You Think You Can Dance, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and Live with Regis and Kelly. The dynamic and highly visual eight-man dance crew toured with New Kids on the Block and Jesse McCartney, launched their own clothing line and performed at the Gator Bowl, with Shaquille O’Neal at the NBA All-Star game, and Taylor Swift at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, just to name a few recent appearances.

Because a Jabbawockeez performance is so visually intense by nature, providing audio for Prism presented special challenges from the outset. As 3G’s Marketing Director Keith Conrad points out, “Given the nature of a dance entertainment show and the need to have the full stage clear and viewable for the audience, we couldn’t have any front fills or subs on stage or in front of stage where they would normally go.”

Employing a d&b audioteknik system that included 12 Q-Subs, 6 V12s a side and eight E8s for the 5.1 surround, 3G applied a particularly unique, problem-solving approach to the system design.

“The client wanted the most SPL possible, but we had to put the subs underneath the stage in a very limited area,” he continues. “The Q subs fit perfectly and were easily able to meet the SPL output requirements for the show.

“Without the ability to have front fills on stage or blocking any portion of the stage, we had to get creative with the arrays. The V12 is rigged at a 15 degree angle on the bottom of array to cover the front seats and the horizontal dispersion of 120 degrees allows for the coverage of a fairly wide room with only 6 boxes a side.

“The client also wanted a surround sound system but didn’t have points or places to hang the boxes in the rear of theater,” Keith concludes. “The d&b E8 was a perfect enclosure for coverage and size, could be mounted directly to the wall and be out of the way, but still provide necessary SPLs for the show.”

Asked about 3G’s role in the show, Jabbawockeez Production Manager Fabian Herrera said, “We had some unique challenges with the theater based on the exaggerated width of the room and the need to keep the stage clear for the dancers. We brought in 3G Productions based on their strong reputation as a service-focused provider and extensive high-end inventory in the Vegas market. They designed a top of the line d&b audiotechnik V-series with Q sub system that blew us away, both in terms of SPL output and coverage and the ability to see the show without any obstructions.”

Thunder Audio Relies on HARMAN’s JBL Professional VTX Line Arrays and Crown I-Tech HD Amplifiers for Massive Austin City Limits Music Festival

AUSTIN, Texas – Music festival specialist Thunder Audio added another notch to its list of notable music events in October when the Livonia, Michigan-based company made its debut at the renowned Austin City Limits Music Festival. The event, which for the first time took take place over two weekends (October 4-6 and October 11-13), saw Thunder Audio set up a huge HARMAN JBL VTX line array system, powered by Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers.

“We know what sound needs to be like for large outdoor music festivals,” assures Thunder Audio Vice President Paul Owen, who spent 23 years mixing monitors for heavy-metal legend Metallica. “We’ve done numerous major ones including the Orion Music + More Festival, the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and Faster Horses, and you need a powerful system with excellent low-frequency response and clarity that’s also incredibly reliable for long periods of time under sometimes pretty challenging conditions. And it can get pretty hot in Austin! But I have to say, VTX has proven itself to be just that system on previous occasions and it proved itself again at the ACL Music Festival.”

The system consisted of 36 VTX V25 fullsize line array elements flown 18 per side flanking the main stage, with an additional eight V25 cabinets per side for the outside hang. A total of 48 VTX S28 subwoofers were configured as two hangs of 12 each on either side of the stage, with 24 ground-stacked S28 subs across the front of the stage. Four JBL VERTEC® VT4888 midsize line array elements were used for front fill along with a pair of V25 loudspeakers as left-right outside fills. The JBL loudspeakers were controlled using a pair of dbx 4800 system controllers. The entire system was powered by 86 Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers networked and controlled with JBL HiQnet Performance Manager™ system setup software, which enables Thunder Audio to configure and tune an audio system in less time and with better results.

Owen said that in addition to challenging work, large music festivals are also excellent opportunities to viscerally compare the performance and sound of different PA systems in the field. “You can see how different systems handle throw distances, tightness and accuracy of pattern coverage, vertical and horizontal dispersion, and sonic accuracy,” he explained. “The VTX system was at the top of all of those characteristics.”

In particular, Owen said, the VTX’s throw was exceptional and just what was needed in the huge, 351-acre Zilker Park venue for the ACL Music Festival. “The reaction of guest engineers to the VTX has been just spectacular,” he added.

Greg Snyder, Project Manager for Thunder Audio at the ACL Music Festival, noted the performance of the S28 subwoofers was impressive. “The punch from the subs, especially during Muse’s headline set, was monstrous,” he said. “The people there that night got a real treat.”

HARMAN’s JBL Professional CBT Column Loudspeakers Enable Firetron to Do More with Less at Guy K. Traylor Stadium

NORTHRIDGE, California – Home to the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District High School football team in Rosenberg, Texas, Guy K. Traylor Stadium is a 12,000-seat multipurpose venue. Seeking to upgrade its audio reinforcement system, the district called upon systems integration firm Firetron of Stafford, Texas, to install a unique new system highlighted by HARMAN’s JBL CBT Series column loudspeakers.

The previous system at Guy K. Traylor Stadium consisted of loudspeakers arranged at the end zones of the field—a setup that Richard Phillips, Sales Engineer for Firetron, saw as insufficient for the stadium’s needs. “I strive to bring the loudspeakers as close to the audience as possible to get maximum fidelity,” he said. “The stadium had an end zone system and it only lasted six years. As a general rule, I feel that distributed systems usually work better than end zone systems, so we developed a distributed concept utilizing CBT column loudspeakers.”

Firetron designed and installed a system featuring four JBL CBT 200LA-1 column loudspeakers on each long side of the stadium—four behind the home team stands and four behind the visiting team stands. The system is powered with Crown IT6000 amplifiers with BSS BLU-100 processing. “The wide coverage of the CBT’s enabled us to achieve high-impact sound and even dispersion with relatively few loudspeakers,” Phillips added. “The system is also broken into two discrete parts—one on the home team side and the other on the visiting team side—so each side can operate autonomously.”

At 6.6 feet tall with 32 drivers, the CBT 200LA-1 provides consistent pattern control over a wider bandwidth than is possible with shorter columns or fewer drivers. Vertical pattern coverage is adjustable to either 15 or 30 degrees to match the architectural characteristics of a wide variety of venues, and a variety of mounting heights. In addition, an innovative asymmetrical progressive-gradient coverage mode can be selected, directing more sound toward the far areas of the listening space to help reduce variation in SPL levels from front to back throughout the area.

“It’s the first time I’ve installed the CBT speakers and the project turned out great,” Phillips noted. “The school district is very happy with the quality of the sound and the system is very easy for them to operate.”

Overture Center Installs L-ACOUSTICS at Historic Capitol Theater

Complex’s oldest and second-largest venue now home to a KARA system

MADISON, Wisconsin — First opened in 1928, the Capitol Theater is the oldest and second largest venue in Madison, Wisconsin’s Overture Center for the Arts complex, which today encompasses seven performance facilities and four art galleries. HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 Speeds Up Training Times for Royal Holloway University of London

EGHAM, United Kingdom – The Student Union at the Royal Holloway University of London host a variety of events at a multifunctional venue, which include live music, clubs, conferences, theaters, trade shows, etc. Its technical crew is responsible for approximately 10 different productions a week, and recently purchased a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 in order to train more students in front of house (FOH) audio mixing.

“I purchased a different brand of digital console 18 months ago for our FOH training. On top of that, its gain structure is sweet and requires little work to achieve the desired results,” Travers added.

Crabby Joe’s Makes A Bold Statement With 165” 3×3 Videowall Installed By Advanced

The owners of the newly renovated Crabby Joe’s at 276 Dundas St. in London, Ontario knew they needed to go big with their AV system to draw guests fromlocal competition. A videowall was their top choice for displaying major events and multiple events at once, so they went to the AV professionals at Advanced to design and install the biggest videowall that would fit.

According to Advanced General Manager of Systems Integration Omar Prashad, the installation gives Crabby Joe’s a sophisticated multi-display solution that is simple to control.

“At our initial meeting Crabby Joe’s owner Howard Pennell told us that he wanted something that would blow his guests away as soon as they walk through the door,” Prashad said. “We determined that the best solution was to build a 3×3 video wall that would allow them to show a single video feed or all six available video feeds at once.

“There was enough room for us to create a 165” videowall composed of nine 55-inch HD Orion display panels, and we installed a simple-to-use Crestron system to give them fast, easy control over which video feed plays on which display. We configured the videowall to allow for all nine panels to show a single feed, or to show the main feed on the four upper-left most displays while each of the remaining five displays can show the other five independent video feeds.”

To ensure the installation went according to plan and that the customer would be 100 percent satisfied with the result, the team at Advanced installed, configured and calibrated the videowall at their warehouse before the real on-site installation even began.

“Monitors need to be color calibrated,” Prashad said, “and LED LCD technology tends to work through most of its color shift in the first 10 hours. We like to get every installation right the first time, so we rig up each videowall we build in our warehouse and make sure everything is working and calibrated before the customer ever sees it. The last thing we want is to start hanging panels in the restaurant and find that one of them is defective. This pre-installation testing process allows us to sort out issues so the customer doesn’t have to.”
Pennell knew that not every AV company can pull off this type of installation. After deciding he wanted a videowall for the new restaurant’s grand re-opening, he researched companies in the area that specialize in large, complex AV systems, and found that Advanced had the experience and expertise he was looking for.

“I wanted the guest experience to be unforgettable, and I wanted the videowall to make a statement to our guests. Advanced delivered everything I could have hoped for, and I hope to work with them again in the future,” Pennell said. He added that while it wasn’t the lowest-cost option, the final effect of the videowall can’t be underestimated.
“The cost of the videowall was worth the effect that it has on passersby and guests once they enter the restaurant,” he said. “We could have simply hung a bunch of TVs on the wall, but this system has as much value as a marketing tool as an actual video display. London has the highest concentration of restaurants in Ontario, so we’re always looking for anything we can do or provide that guests can’t get elsewhere. The ‘WOW” factor when you see this videowall is amazing, and it really is the best place in town for people to catch all their favorite sports. People see it when they walk by our window, and then they bring their friends the next time they come in. Plus it’s much easier to use and stay organized with the Crestron system than having nine more separate TVs.”

Daktronics Redesigns Audio System at University of Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium with HARMAN’s JBL VLA Line Arrays

MADISON, Wisconsin – In time for the football season, Daktronics recently redesigned the video board and audio system at the University of Wisconsin’s famed Camp Randall Stadium. Home to the Wisconsin Badgers football team, the stadium seats 80,321 people and is the 41st largest stadium in the world. To match the intensity of some of college football’s most dedicated fans, Daktronics selected HARMAN’s JBL VLA Series line array loudspeakers for the new audio system.

“We modeled different designs from many different manufacturers before deciding to use the VLA loudspeakers. No other system could deliver a confident outcome besides the VLA design,” according to David Sturzenbecher of Daktronics.

The new system consists of 18 JBL VLA301H loudspeakers, 14 JBL VLA 601H loudspeakers, three JBL PD743 loudspeakers, two JBL PD5212 loudspeakers, 12 AWC82 loudspeakers and 21 AW295 loudspeakers. Four line arrays cover west, south and east seating areas, with many fill speakers covering the north seats and upper seat fills.

“The design of the stadium presented many challenges including a very deep under-balcony area that was shadowed from the main display. This area required a completely separate submix in order to blend properly with the main system,” Sturzenbecher added.

Israel’s Channel 10 Commits To HARMAN Studer Vista 9 Amidst Major Relocation

JERUSALEM, Israel – Channel 10, the third-largest TV studio in Israel, recently acquired a HARMAN Studer Vista 9 digital console from Kilim Electronics, Studer’s Israeli distributor. This upgrade in broadcasting equipment was justified by the studio’s relocation from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, due to government regulation.

As the producers and technicians of Channel 10 were eager to convert from its old analog format to digital, they weighed many factors in choosing the best brand for their new sound setup. On both technical and financial levels, Studer came out on top, presenting its flagship Vista 9 console as the ideal solution for the new studio.
