K&S Electronics Updates Courthouse Audio With Astatic Mics

When the Hillsborough North Superior Court in Manchester, New Hampshire underwent reconstruction and modernization, they brought in K&S Electronics of Craftsbury, Vermont to upgrade their sound system.

According to K&S President Ken Atherton, “The system had to provide audio for media and function effectively as a PA system. Because we support the FTR (ForTheRecord) digital recording format, our challenge was finding microphones that would provide audio for live reinforcement and recording verbatim testimony in courtrooms with digital-ready audio quality and minimal background noise.

“A while back, we had used 905R Astatic mics for court service windows in Maine.” Atherton continues, “and were impressed with their signal-to-noise performance and vocal clarity. Based on that, we chose Astatic 915B and 920B goosenecks for six courtrooms in the Hillsborough project because they also have impressive signal-to-noise performance and outperformed more expensive microphones.

“We also installed the Astatic 905R at the witness stands because their short length, tight pickup pattern and outstanding sensitivity at picking up soft-spoken witnesses allowed them to be mounted at a greater distance, which also provided a larger work surface. The mics also have a minimal visual impact because of the miniature gooseneck design.

“For the attorneys, we chose Astatic 40-117 microphone stands, which we use in virtually all installations. The muting function is essential for attorney-client privacy and the stand also lends itself well as a platform for modifications. We typically mount either a jack, for wired hearing assistance, or switches that can be wired for sound system-muting applications.”

The rest of the system upgrade included Shure SCM810 8-channel mic mixers, TOA A-912MK2 amplifiers, and Electro-Voice loudspeakers. Atherton also points out that the Shure mixers’ noise gating function teamed effectively with Astatic mics to further increase the gain-before-feedback.

Summing up, Ken explains “We’ve found that the price point of Astatic microphones make them an excellent choice in today’s economy without any compromises in quality. Comparing them with other brands, we’ve found they perform as well as brands that cost three times as much. And for Hillsborough, their performance was definitely up to the recording quality of the FTR system. They are quiet, natural-sounding microphones, which makes them an ideal choice for courtroom applications.”

Martin Audio OmniLine Transforms Sound For United Church of Christ

Middletown, MD––When the United Church of Christ was damaged by fire, they took advantage of the situation and called in Audio-Video Group of Frederick, Maryland to redesign and upgrade their sound system as part of the renovation.

Fortunately, the church sanctuary hadn’t been too badly damaged, with the chancel and the area above it requiring the repairs that mostly involved new wiring. Asked about the challenges of installing the new sound system, Audio-Video Group’s President Eric Johnson says, “The church specified that no acoustical treatment was to be added, and since it was an acoustically challenging space because of the surrounding balcony and hard plaster ceiling and walls, the excessive reverberation was surely going to hamper intelligibility. The new system had to be designed around, and to directly combat this issue.”

“The previous sound system was built into the ceiling and the coverage was not that great. When they saw this opportunity to undertake a new sound system that would provide better coverage, speech and music reproduction, they pounced on it.”

Having a client used to speakers that were hidden from view and therefore wary of any audio system hanging from the ceiling into the sanctuary was also challenging. As Audio-Video Group’s Chief Engineer Stephen Bon explains, “Martin Audio’s OmniLine system was our first choice simply in terms of its minimal footprint and aesthetic appeal, which were very important to the Church.

“It also provided the solution to cover the main level seating under and out from the balcony and the balcony itself with full range sound,” adds Bon. “So the coverage pattern with a small, visually unobtrusive speaker was a key factor in choosing OmniLine. We’d used the system in the past and knew it was ideally suited for this project.”

The installed system consists of a single hang from the ceiling with 8 OmniLine enclosures and a Martin Audio AQ212 sub above the hang in the enclosure covered with a grille cloth opening that originally housed the audio system.

Audio-Video Group redid 90% of the audio system with new digital signal processing, amplification, speakers and additional wireless. The audio was converted from predominantly a speech, manual mixer only system to more of a performance-based combination automatic/manual setup.

System components included a Biamp Audia Flex DSP (14-In x 10-Out) for auto-mixing speech mics and all signal processing; a Lab Gruppen C28.4 four-channel amplifier; Biamp MCA-8050 eight-channel amplifier; four Shure ULX-series wireless systems and a Marantz PMD580 solid-state recorder.

Asked about the new system, Johnson points out, “The audio quality is as different as night and day. There’s a drastic difference in terms of intelligibility with smooth, even coverage even from the balcony down through the main seating area in the sanctuary.

“Now it works well for speech and music,” adds Bon. “The Church has moved into a more contemporary music program with acoustic instruments and the musical reproduction is fantastic for both. They wanted full fidelity and even coverage up to moderate levels, and that’s exactly what they have.”

The United Church of Christ’s sound operator Paul Fink is also enthusiastic about the change: “OmniLine speakers are an incredible improvement over the old system. The ability to place them in the active space and aim the sound output directly to the congregation while reducing the bounce effects has made the biggest difference. As to the quality of sound from the speakers, there is no real comparison to the old system. I have occasionally driven them to the limits of my hearing with no sound degradation at all.”

Describing the overall impact of the Church’s new audio system, Johnson concludes, “Intelligibility is the predominant characteristic of the OmniLine system. Looking at the entire congregation from the youngest to the oldest member, we were concerned that everyone would be able to understand the spoken word and OmniLine passed with flying colors.”

The system is built around four BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-800 Signal Processors, four BLU-320 I/O Expanders, 10 BLU-32 I/O Expanders, nine BLU-80 Signal Processors (all with CobraNet(tm)), eight BLU-8v2 Programmable Zone Controllers, 39 Analog Input Cards, 49 Analog Output Cards, a Digital Input Card and two Digital Output Cards. Amplification is provided by 34 Crown CTs 4200A and 17 CTs 1200 power amplifiers.

“We chose the Soundweb London components because of their networking capabilities, proven performance in many previous installations and their ability to interface with the Crown amps via HiQnet System Architect(tm). Ohio-based integrator to provide 16-channel projected visualization solution with diverse market applications

The migration of immersive displays to the worlds of enterprise conferencing and collaboration will be a key theme for projectiondesign® at this year’s InfoComm 2012 show, as the Norwegian manufacturer teams up with BOI Solutions, Inc., to showcase its F22 projectors integrated in a 16-channel visualization solution on its booth in Las Vegas.

Dataton brings colour, movement and sound to Les Baux de Provence

Videmus supplies WATCHOUT to enable transformation of stone labyrinth onto ‘Quarries of Light’

Dataton is delighted to announce that its WATCHOUT multi-display and show-management software has been used as a core technology at a major new art installation in the south of France.

A collaboration between the town of Les Baux de Provence and the specialist French venue management company Culturespaces, ‘Carrières de Lumières’ (‘Quarries of Light’) is a hi-tech re-purposing of the Carrières du Val d’Enfer – a network of abandoned chalk-mining tunnels close to the historic Provençal village.

With a subterranean feel, the Carrières de Lumières is a labyrinth almost 200 metres long that varies in height between 10 and 15 metres. In its newly re-invented form, the space provides the perfect backdrop for large-scale video projection – a place where visitors can view images close to or from a greater distance away, while the unique texture of the chalk surfaces adds further visual interest to whatever artistic content is being displayed.

The Carrières de Lumières opened to the public in March of this year with its first show – ‘Gauguin, Van Gogh, les peintres de la couleur.’ The show, which literally throws new light on the colours used by two of art history’s most celebrated painters by projecting still photographs and video animations oftheir works, was commissioned from designer Gianfranco Iannuzzi by Culturespace founder Bruno Monnier.

As well as the walls of the former quarry, the show uses the floor as a projection surface, while a discreetly installed audio system plays a series of atmospheric 12-track musical backgrounds through a network of 50 loudspeakers. A stage-lighting setup based on LED sources accentuates the stonework with raking light at times when the ‘screens’ are not showing any content.

In all, there are 68 video projectors, all ceiling-mounted to minimize the impact of projected light beams on visitors. Each projector has its own server content running an individual Dataton WATCHOUT™ channels. These, together with a second machine running the Medialon Manager show-control system with which WATCHOUT runs in sync, make a total of 70 devices in total – all housed in an air-conditioned control room located on-site but accessible only by staff.

The WATCHOUT-equipped servers were supplied by Videmus, Dataton’s partner for WATCHOUT in France. The company worked closely with an installation team led by technical manager Sebastien Chapuis, and with project staff Mathieu Delfine, Florence Amat and Agathe Poisson.

“The project team liked the WATCHOUT solution because of its simplicity,” explains Eric Lambert, managing director, Videmus. “As well as ensuring that all the projectors receive their video content at full resolution and in perfect sync with each other, WATCHOUT also uses MIDI commands to sequence the on-site audio DSP settings so that the right soundtrack is played through the right speakers at the right time, while at the same time controlling a DMX-512 universe for the LED lighting.

“All this is then managed by Medialon Manager show-control system, which operates a seven-day calendar so that the show begins and ends every day, at the right time of day, without the staff having to worry about a thing.”

MOOVed by video as well as voice – Dataton’s WATCHOUT powers vide for Andrea Bocelli in Poland.


The new DMX capabilities of WATCHOUT version 5.2 are put through their paces.

Through the Polish systems integration and live-events show specialist MOOV working forlocal events production company Prestige MJM, Dataton WATCHOUT was used to sync and drive multi-screen video content for a spectacular concert by the Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli.

Staged on 29 April at the impressive new Atlas Arena in the Polish city of Lodz, the Bocelli concert – part of the singer’s ‘Notte Illuminata’ world tour – featured a 160 square metre LED mesh screen as its backdrop, comprising twenty 8-metre strips of Barco’s Mitrix solid-state display wall product. Either side of the LED wall were two 16:9 projection screens measuring 7.45m wide by 4.31m high, each showing images from a Barco FLM series 20,000-lumen projector.

The projection screens were used mainly for showing live IMAG close-ups of Bocelli, the most popular singer in classical music history, and his co-performers – which included a full orchestra and choir. Meanwhile, the LED wall content varied between IMAG and pre-mixed movie clippings and other effects, ranging from archive news footage from before World War II to a vast stained-glass window.

Marek Kurzawa from Prestige MJM explains: “The Atlas Arena is one of the biggest indoor concert venues in Poland and, with more than 10,000 fans inside for the Bocelli event, it wasimportant for the show to contain large-screen visual elements that would keep those toward the rear of the venue on the edge of their seats.”

Piotr Majewski, MD at MOOV adds: “By using two computers installed with WATCHOUT – one for the LED wall and the other with two outputs for the two projectors – we were able to synchronise the pre-recorded video with the live camera feeds for the IMAG content. Thus the audience was treated to a constantly shifting, dynamic video experience to match the excitement and energy of the musical performance itself.”

Factor TC Revives Popular Tequila Club With HARMAN’s JBL VRX Constant Curvature Loudspeakers

The new Tequila Club at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sofia, Bulgaria features JBL VRX Constant Curvature loudspeakers and Crown amplification.

NORTHRIDGE, California – The new Tequila Club at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Sofia has become one of the new flagship destination venues in the Bulgarian capital. Situated beneath ground level in two separate areas, the bar / nightclub has independent lounges, and is aimed at the city’s affluent and VIP clientele, serving a variety of drinks and cocktails.

Owners, T.Q. Partners Ltd. Investment Group, wanted the quality of the sound system to reflect the opulence of the environment, and HARMAN’s JBL was one of their preferred brands. Having worked previously with Factor TC, who have been distributing HARMAN Professional’s brand portfolio in the country for nearly two decades, they were quickly in contact.

After a series of meetings and live product demonstrations with the owners and architects, a JBL VRX Constant Curvature line array loudspeaker system was adopted. “The owners were already well aware of the advantages of VRX and we were also convinced that this was the best solution,” said Vesselin Todorov, president of Factor TC.

The integrators were also conscious that they needed to preserve the cachet of the new-look Tequila Club, since the original venue bearing that name—formerly situated two blocks away — was a huge favorite in the 1990s with local cutting-edge DJ’s and clubbers.

Factor TC specified 12 JBL VRX932LA and eight VRX918S subwoofers as the main PA, powered by five Crown XTi6002 amplifiers. Four Control® Contractor 24C ceiling speakers and four black Control 25 enclosures were deployed for the peripheral sound in the bar and ancillary areas, aided by a Crown 180MA mixer/amplifier. The dance system is under the control of a dbx DriveRack 260, which ensures that the performance is fully optimized.

The architects from design studio Idea of Sofia, in particular expressed their delight with the 100-degree horizontal x 15-degree vertical coverage achieved by placing the VRX enclosures above the bar areas.

“Given a choice of several leading brands, it was the long-term relationship we have with the client, their goodwill towards HARMAN products and the quality of JBL sound they experienced at the live demo that proved conclusive,” Todorov explained.

“We are very happy to be working with Factor TC again,” responded Boris Stefanov, manager of Tequila Club. “They always offer us the best possible products, and for our luxury club I personally chose JBL VRX as the best sounding compact system. Although we have installed industry standard DJ equipment, there are no separate reference monitors for the DJ because with the VRX system he doesn’t need it.”

With the club open seven nights a week the new sound system will certainly be put through its paces in the coming months.
