Future Lighting at Dorking Halls

Touted as the future of entertainment lighting for a number of years, LED-based lighting fixtures are now rapidly entering the mainstream, as witnessed by the re-equipping of Dorking Halls in Surrey, England, supplied by UK-based entertainment lighting specialists White Light. Prism Projection’s RevEAL Color Wash LED luminaire

The staff at the Halls, a versatile multi-purpose venue that hosts everything from concert recitals to wrestling to conferences to cinema to pantomime, felt that the time had come to replace the existing rig of 1,000W Fresnels and PARs. The aim of both Michael Knight and Craig Gravett of Dorking Halls was to build a lighting rig that offered more versatility compared to the existing gear while retaining the high-quality illumination and fades the Hall’s users expected – all while being more energy-efficient than the previous set-up.

In the first instance, Craig Gravett compiled a list of products that he thought would work well for the venue, including both fixed focus and moving LED fixtures. A full comparative demonstration of this equipment together with a selection of other products was then arranged by White Light.

Based on this hands-on testing, the final rig chosen consisted of a core fixed-focus rig from Prism Projection: eight Prism RevEAL
Color Wash fixtures and six Prism RevEAL Studio Fresnel fixtures. As with all of the Prism range, these fixtures include color mixing with built-in monitoring of the fixture output, allowing the light output to be consistent from unit to unit and to remain consistent over the fixture’s life. The Studio offers all of the flexibility of a traditional Fresnel, with a beam that can be varied from 20˚-70˚ either under local or DMX control.

Complementing the Prism fixtures are moving lights from JB Lighting, Martin Professional, and Philips Vari-Lite.

The considerably lower power requirements of this all-LED rig compared to more traditional lighting fixtures meant that the Hall was able to fund their purchase with an interest-free loan based on a scheme to provide loans for energy-efficient equipment, as long as the new equipment will pay for itself within five years.

“We have been delighted with our new rig,” comments Gravett from Dorking Halls, “primarily because it has provided incredible flexibility compared to our old rig of traditional lanterns, letting our users enjoy a whole new range of lighting possibilities. That it uses less energy than our previous rig is a welcome bonus!”

“White Light was invaluable during the process of deciding on the new rig,” adds Knight, “since their extensive equipment stock and their huge experience with all kinds of fixtures meant that they were able to offer advice and let us try things for ourselves hands-on, which is always the best way to pick new products. They were a delight to work with.”

Denver Public Schools Keeps Community Informed more Easily with Shared Storage System from Small Tree

For public schools, an informed community is an engaged community. As such, it is in the best interest for public schools to take advantage of technologies that enable information to be disseminated more quickly to students, parents and community residents.

While communicating with the community has become easier for schools, the introduction of technologies to deliver content often leads to previously unforeseen hurdles that schools must clear. To facilitate such heavy content creation, DPStv needed a simple way to provide its post-production team with immediate and simultaneous access to HD media. With eight HD suites located on separate floors, DPStv installed a 24TB ST-RAID II, the first Ethernet-based shared storage system to support 6Gb SAS/SATA protocol end-to-end. Sitting behind a Mac Pro Server, the system includes direct attached shared storage technology designed to support Adobe and Final Cut post-production professionals looking for economical, functional and easy to manage storage solutions.

Manchester’s Dry Live Upgrades With Martin Audio H3H+

Manchester’s iconic Dry Bar, a landmark of the city’s trendy Northern Quarter since 1989, recently underwent an interior upgrade in the bar and its newly refurbished basement music venue Dry Live. Situated below the bar, the venue has been completely refurbished with a black and grey interior and a brand new Martin Audio sound system.

Tasked with equipping the new Dry Live, local audio specialists Masons and their system design engineer Jack Jennings chose a Martin Audio Blackline H3H+ horn-loaded solution as the best fit for the applications.

The basement space had previously been split into several small rooms but the floor had opened out into one large venue so the downstairs space could be used for both live music and club events served by a single sound system.

The venue operators had stipulated that they wanted the audience to be able to get as close to the front of the stage as possible, while still having the desired system—“one that can offer all the punch and growl that you’d ever need”—a sound suited for both band and club events. Unfortunately, faced with ceiling height restrictions, the drop-height excluded the use of arrays or standard ‘portrait’ profile speakers.

This presented Jennings with a problem. Conventional floor-standing stacks on either side of the stage would be impractical if they needed dismantling, storing and reassembling for certain events. “The system needed to have no permanent footprint on the floor and be flown as high as possible, out of the way when not in use,” he said.

Thus with the intended mixed use of the venue, requiring dynamic and even coverage for a number of different scenarios, Jack Jennings knew the low-profile H3H+ midrange would deliver high-quality instrument and vocal reproduction.

“The Martin Audio H3H+ full-range 3-way speaker fit the bill perfectly,” he said. “Its horizontal format, high power handling, high output levels and 70º x 40º dispersion characteristics all leant themselves to this install.”

Jennings specified four H3H+ enclosures lined up across the front of the stage area. The central two are mounted tight against the ceiling and tilted slightly down to achieve nearfield audience coverage, while the outer two are mounted slightly forward and below, on steel joists either side of the stage.

The crisp high-frequency output needed to be matched by powerful sub-bass and give club promoters the sense of aural immersion they desire, despite operating as a stage-focused system rather than a traditional dance floor surround.

This is provided by four Martin Audio WS218X double 18” direct-radiating subs, two each on either side of the stage, fitted with castors so they can be easily removed when required and wheeled into a storage area.

The entire system is powered from just a 4U rack — containing a dedicated Martin Audio DX1.5 2 in 6 out digital controller and three Martin Audio MA switch-mode amplifiers.

“This elegant set-up provides huge amounts of power and reliability and allows the venue to operate the system without fear of any technical issues,” concludes Jennings.

On top of a new sound system and new look, Dry Live has also welcomed a new lighting system for both bands and club events––courtesy of Masons. Since receiving the huge Martin Audio sound system, Dry Live has played host to some of Manchester and beyond’s finest musical talent in terms of bands, DJs and promoters and is working its way up as one of Manchester’s most sought after clubs of 2012.

Landmark Kansas City Venue Gets the Full Renkus-Heinz Treatment

Kansas City, MO – July 2012…  The Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is the centerpiece of Kansas City’s downtown revival. The futuristic 285,000-square-foot, $413 million project links the city’s downtown center with its landmark Crossroads Arts and Power & Light Districts, and is home to the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet, and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.

The two performance spaces – Muriel Kauffman Theatre and Helzberg Hall – were designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie. Both were created using ultra-modern, sound-isolating building-within-a-building construction; a foundation, walls, and roof surrounded by fully independent foundation, walls, and roof.

The 1600-seat Helzberg Hall, home to the Kansas City Symphony, offers seating in a semi-circular “vineyard-style” configuration that surrounds more than 270 degrees of the massive 2700-square-foot stage, placing no seat more than 100 feet away.

Consultants Engineering Harmonics, whose team included Senior Consultant Martin Van Dijk, Associate Consultant Roer Gans, and designer Russ Noble, worked with Nagata Acoustics to design the sound system, which was installed by Clair Brothers. With the venue’s acoustics primarily designed for symphonic sound, the hall essentially called for dual systems – one for music, the other for voice intelligibility.

The main performance system is centered around Renkus-Heinz ST-Series reference point arrays, with left and right clusters of ST4, augmented by ST-2M cabinets. Rear and side fills are amply covered with ST2-R and ST2-MR boxes, while TRX62H compact systems provide over balcony fills. A dozen PNX112 Subswoofers are built into the stage lip, while 72 Iconyx SSL drivers are built into a custom baffle inside the balcony for additional coverage.

The innovative voice reinforcement system utilizes three Iconyx IC16-5 digitally steered arrays. The three columns are arranged in a 360-degree configuration, with each column covering a 120-degree pattern. The “voice stick” is concealed in the ceiling, descending from its soffit inside the 100,000-lb acoustical reflector canopy above the stage.

The massive, seven-story glass enclosed lobby was also treated to Iconyx systems to help with spoken word intelligibility, with three more Ic16-R arrays concealed behind a metal grille.

“The Iconyx definitely helped to focus the sound in a very challenging environment,” says Ciair Brothers Project Manager Dustin Goen. “I don’t see how it could have been done with any other kind of loudspeakers.”

In November 2011, Les Cinémas Guzzo (“Guzzo”) announced that all its screens, support and services were converting to digital with Christie. The contract includes the Christie CP2000ZX, Christie CP2000-SB, Christie CP2210, Christie CP2220, and Christie CP2230 projectors. The agreement also includes the upgrading of 27 screens to the Christie CP4220 and Christie CP4230 4K projectors. The conversion will be completed in the spring of 2012.

Ready to Make History Again: Peltrix Installed HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC(r) Line Arrays in Howard Theatre

Peltrix recently installed JBL VERTEC line arrays for the audio system at the restored Howard Theatre in Washington, DC.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Not long ago, the historic Howard Theatre in Washington, DC was slated for the wrecking ball. Built in 1910 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, the Howard Theatre went from being a showcase for artists like Sarah Vaughn, Buddy Holly, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown and Duke Ellington to its abandonment in 1980. By the time a non-profit citizens group called the Howard Theatre organization formed in 2006 to raise the $29 million needed to revive the theatre, it was almost in total ruin.

In September 2010 the restoration began, which was completed in April 2012 in a venue of elegance and beauty inside and out. Washington, DC’s Martinez + Johnson Architecture and Marshall Moya Design were responsible for the theatre’s design, architecture and restoration. Systems contractor Peltrix (www.peltrix.com) of Purdys, NY handled the A/V design and installation, which includes a large-scale HARMAN’s JBL VERTEC(r) line array system. Richard Talaske (www.talaske.com) of Oak Park, IL was brought in as the acoustical consultant.

“The inside of the Theatre was a complete disaster,” said Amit Peleg of Peltrix. “The roof was caving in, a pile of debris was in the middle of the floor and it was clear that everything would have to be completely gutted. However, we knew of the Theatre’s past glories and that there was the potential for magnificence buried amid the wreckage.”

The restoration plans had to combine and reconcile historic architectural elements with modern attributes including the A/V wiring, rigging, HVAC system and other aspects that were not present in the original construction. “Although the construction crew wound up tearing down almost everything to the bare walls and even dug a new basement, we had a lot of historical guidelines that we had to conform to, as the Howard Theatre organization wanted to retain the charm and distinctive look and feel of the original venue as it was back in 1910,” Peleg noted.

“Obviously, we couldn’t completely hide a system that included more than 50 JBL loudspeakers,” Peleg continued, “but we worked closely with the Howard Theatre team, the architects and Talaske to strike the best compromise between the placement and performance of the speakers while ensuring the structural integrity of the installation and intruding as little as possible on the interior design.”

The main system includes 20 JBL VERTEC VT4888DP-DA powered midsize line array elements, flown 10 on each side of the stage, along with six VERTEC VT4880ADP-DA fullsize, arrayable powered subwoofers. Four additional ASB7128 subwoofers are placed at ground level. The system also includes two VERTEC VT4887ADP-DA powered compact line array elements for center downfill and two VRX928LA compact Constant Curvature loudspeakers for delay fill under the mezzanine.

The Howard Theatre’s impressive stage monitor system consists of 13 JBL VRX915M floor wedges, two VP71215/95DPDA for side fills and a VP7215/64DPDA powered loudspeaker and ASB7118-DPDA powered subwoofer to deliver the drum mix.

“As I mentioned, we didn’t have the luxury of putting all the speakers exactly where we might have wanted them,” Peleg said. “We couldn’t place any delay speakers in the mezzanine, for example, but on the other hand we were able to install bigger line arrays than we had first envisioned. We also placed some of the side fill speakers on custom moveable brackets so they can be easily moved in and out of the way when the lighting truss is moved into and out of place for different shows. Because the room isn’t that large, we didn’t have to worry about having enough speakers to ensure adequate sound or trying to fit too many speakers into the room.”

“The result is absolutely stunning,” Peleg concluded. “The Howard Theatre is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen and I’m really proud of the fact that by making some intelligent placement decisions and working closely with everyone involved, our team was able to install an exceptional speaker system that does not detract from the interior design.”

Crowne Centre Auditorium At Pensacola Christian College Upgrades With HARMAN’s Studer Consoles and BSS Audio Processors

PENSACOLA, Florida – Florida’s Pensacola Christian College recently received a major audio upgrade to its 6,200-seat Crowne Centre auditorium with two HARMAN Studer Vista 9(tm) digital audio consoles, nine BSS Audio Soundweb London BLU-160 signal processors and five BLU-BIB break-in boxes. Architecturally striking with its tall, jewel-like faceted glass front sections and ultramodern curved interior featuring a 110-foot rotating stage and dual wedding chapels, the Crowne Centre is used for services, concerts, weddings and special events.

The Crowne Centre was built in 2001 but the sound system recently began showing its age. The auditorium is used almost daily, and while it proved very reliable overall, after 11 years of constant use the mixing console and other components began to exhibit failures and glitches. Commercial audio contractor All Pro Sound was chosen to bring the audio system back to the high-quality standards required by the college.

“We didn’t just want this to be a glorified repair job-we wanted the system to be more powerful and user-friendly, to be future-proof and to provide many years of reliable service,” said John Fuqua, Vice President, All Pro Sound. “We have worked with Pensacola Christian College for over 25 years and have a great understanding of their expectations for quality and function. As the original system designer and installer, All Pro Sound was able to provide a comprehensive plan that met both function and timeline.”

“The Studer Vista 9 is a significant upgrade from the previous console,” Fuqua stated. “We chose it for its large input and output capability, its flexible configurability and its superior sonic quality.”

The Crowne Centre uses two Vista 9 consoles for front of house and in the broadcast suite. Both have 42-fader mixing surfaces and are running a total of 212 inputs with 32 main outs, 48 matrix sends and 32 aux sends. The broadcast console is programmed for dynamic automation, which is required for remixing the musical portions of the church services and concert events.

“The Studer Vista 9 fits this installation perfectly,” Fuqua continued. “We needed consoles that could handle both live sound and broadcast mixing needs, and the Vista 9 is versatile enough to be optimized for both applications. It makes life much easier to have the same brand and model of console, especially since both are networked together.”

The inter-compatibility of the two consoles and the BSS Audio Soundweb London components was an especially crucial-and practical-aspect considering the time frame Fuqua was under. “We had a 3-week window to remove the old gear, change all the system programming, pull all-new fiber optic cable between locations and take delivery of, install and program a large Studer mixing system. We started the process with Studer engineers in early March for the install date to begin on May 25, so we could be completed by June 15. This was, at best, very tight for the Studer system to be built, tested and shipped to the site. We took delivery of the first Vista 9 on June 1 and the second on June 4.”

“The fact that the Studer and BSS Audio components are literally made for each other was a tremendous advantage in ensuring we did not go over deadline,” Fuqua added. “The system uses HiQnet(tm) London Architect programming interface and its drag-and-drop functionality really sped up the configuration process. Our lead systems designer Dennis Ryan created a custom GUI that allows for complete function control and monitoring for all types of events held in the Crowne Centre. The wide variety of signal processing options provided by the Soundweb London BLU-160 enabled us to precisely optimize the sound and performance of the system.”

“The Crowne Centre staff is extremely pleased with the sound quality and more intuitive user interface of the Vista 9 and the capabilities of the entire system,” Fuqua concluded. “The sound quality of the new BSS Audio Soundweb London components coupled with the Vista 9 consoles was evident from the first sound checks.”

Jiangsu TV Station Adds HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6™ And Vi1™ Digital Consoles

NANJING, China — To meet its high standards of television production, Jiangsu TV recently invested in a brand new 8-channel and 4-channel HD EFP audio system. To work in conjunction with this purchase, the station also invested in HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 and Vi1 digital consoles to mix the in-house shows on the 8-channel and 4-channel systems, respectively.

The 8-channel audio system is configured through the Vi6 through two Soundcraft stageboxes and fiber wiring. The main functionality for this setup is for the popular “If You Are The One” dating show, which boasts the highest ratings of any variety show in the country.

Ravi ‘Drums’ Jakhotia Backs Indian Premier League’s 2012 Twenty20 Cricket Tournament Opening Ceremonies, Monitors Performances With HARMAN’s AKG IVM4500 In-Ear Monitors

VIENNA, Austria – Broadcast to more than 500 million viewers in 66 countries, The Indian Premier League launched its 2012 Twenty20 cricket tournament with an opening ceremony full of international acts at the YMCA College of Physical Education Grounds in Nandanam, Chenni, India. Backing two of the multiple groups performing at the event, which was headlined by Katy Perry, Ravi ‘Drums’ Jakhotia played with First Project and Colonial Cousins, from Africa and India respectively, relying on the HARMAN AKG IVM4500 In Ear Monitoring system to ensure his high-quality sound.

Hired by Wizcraft International Entertainment after successful Indian-based gigs in the past, Jakhotia was eager to return to the country for such a large and important event in the sporting world. During his first performance, Jakhotia accompanied the famed drum band First Project, the opening act for the ceremonies. Later on that night, Ravi Drums played with MTV and Billboard-Award-winning Colonial Cousins from India. During this performance, Jakhotia was given a 3-minute drum solo.
