Frutigen Free Church Upgrades With HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1™

FRUTIGEN, Switzerland – The FMG ‘Ekklesia Movement’ free church in Frutigen, Switzerland has updated its technical infrastructure with the purchase of a Soundcraft Vi1 digital desk.

With a strong emphasis on youth work, the church is no stranger to Soundcraft’s signature sound and design ergonomic, as head technician Micha Grimm explains.

“In the year 2000, we bought some new equipment, largely for modern youth services, including a Soundcraft Ghost 32,” he said. “I purchased this because having worked with a Ghost as sound engineer on different youth choir tours, I was completely satisfied with the EQ’s and the possibilities offered by the Mix B input path.”

More than a decade later, it was time for an upgrade. After contacting Soundcraft’s Swiss distributor, Dr. W.A. Günther, they were persuaded that the time was right to step into the digital age. But first they wanted to evaluate a number of different market-leading brands, including Soundcraft’s new Si1 and Si Compact 32 platforms (alongside the Vi1).

After considering several key factors such as size, usability, price and flexibility, they constructed a short list and arranged an assessment day with all their engineers present.

“There were merits in all three desks that we reviewed,” admitted Grimm, “but all our engineers were excited by the easy way of working on Soundcraft’s Vistonics™ surface. Even our most critical analogue technicians were happy with the Vi1. There was never an instance in which anyone was unclear about the actual layer or function of the desk and almost every function could be carried out without reading a manual. After just an explanation of the overall concept, everybody was pushing to get on it.”

By the evening they had reached a unanimous decision. “It was the surface and Vistonics interface—along with the Soundcraft FaderGlow™ concept [which illuminates the fader slots, according to function, with clearly-defined colours]—that won it for us,” said Grimm.

Grimm added that technical issues were also taken into consideration. “We have read comments in many trade magazines and on forums about the quality of the sound, which enhanced our preference for the Vi1.” But the main attribute was the analogue way of working since their sound engineers, in most cases, are non-professional.

The activity takes place in two halls—the larger, used for special events, generally accommodating between 700-1000 people, and the smaller regularly packing in 500. Every second weekend, the volunteer mixing engineers take charge of a major event in the larger hall, integrating service, worship and concerts with popular bands. “Confronted with this, the last thing they needed was a super-complicated desk,” said Grimm.

Supplied by local Frutigen-based dealer, tonwerkstatt GmbH the Vi1 was installed on a Saturday and immediately went ‘live’ with it for the Sunday morning church service.

“It was a complete success,” Grimm reported. “A quick soundcheck, a perfect and smooth mixing job during the service – and people were coming up to me with a glow in their eyes, asking, “What have you done with the sound? It was outstanding!”

And all this without the technicians at FMG Frutigen opening the handbook!

MLA Makes Spectacular Albert Hall Debut

Sound rental company RG Jones has been producing sound reinforcement infrastructure for the challenging Raymond Gubbay Classical Spectaculars at the Royal Albert Hall since 1993.

With a production harnessing cannons, pyro and lasers in a festival type ‘Proms’ atmosphere, it has taken all of FOH engineer Simon Honywill’s expertise to keep the show’s audio fidelity evolving with each generation of new technology.

Honywill is no stranger to Martin Audio proprietary line array platforms, introducing W8L Longbow systems to the Glastonbury Pyramid stage, and taking the new MLA (Multi-Cellular Loudspeaker Array) system on tour with Jeff Wayne’s War Of The Worlds.

Rigging the MLA at the Royal Albert Hall for the first time ever this month, he knew the Classical show would experience the same dynamic range and sudden transients as War of the Worlds––and in a venue notoriously difficult to control, he also knew it would clean up the room’s inherent reflections. But the performance, he said, was breathtaking, and even beyond his expectations.

“We’ve made a massive leap forward with the MLA … the results were remarkable,” reported Honywill.

At the RAH, the two front arrays comprised 16 element MLA hangs per side, with no downfill enclosures, since the rig’s trim height was 40 ft. (from the lowest box) to accommodate the huge lighting rig. Side hang arrays of nine Martin Audio W8LM mini enclosures were balanced with a single W8LMD underneath to bring coverage down as far as possible; at the same time, a central sub-bass array of six WLX was recessed under the stage apron, which was electronically curved to optimize coverage.

Martin Audio’s Nigel Meddemmen became de facto systems engineer, walking the entire room to verify uniform sound balance. “The challenge was to match the warmth and smooth response of the MLA, a tricky task particularly on some of the operatic pieces with shrill soprano vocals which have a tendency to really show up deficiencies in the high frequency of a system.”

Meddemmen recounted that the design software was critical in ensuring optimum performance. “The calculations were based on Simon’s model of the slice through the venue, and with the advantages of the new Display 2.1 software, Ambrose [Thompson, Martin Audio Electroacoustic Engineer] was able to design a system with the correct splay angles.”

Stated Simon Honywill, “The fact that it sounded so astounding is testament to the software. In fact I have never heard a system [in the RAH] that sounded so similar upstairs as down. Ambrose was also able to rationalize the coverage to effectively reduce the amount of energy hitting the balcony fronts––other systems have claimed it but this is the first to deliver.”

The design prediction created ‘voids’ precisely where necessary––including the elimination of any stage spill, as Simon Honywill was quick to attest. “You could stand under the MLA on stage and not hear a thing!

“But at the same time this is the loudest I have been able to drive a system here without the orchestra moaning!”

The program combined the traditional ‘greatest hits’ from the classical canon with new works such as Karl Jenkins’ Benedictus from The Armed Man; A Mass For Peace. The latter swings from the gentlest of solo cello to five percussionists hitting a variety of drums extremely hard and the choir adding weight to a huge sonic picture.

“We had ten mics on the choir and I found I could keep opening them up massively, with no coloration whatsoever,” noted Honywill. “We’ve never had the amount of level, definition and control––particularly with the low strings––as we achieved with the MLA, and that is what makes it sound really fat. It was a pleasure and absolute joy to mix.”

Summing up, the sound engineer said, “To get the sonic quality and level required by the promoters you can’t afford for the system to be in any way obtrusive. It has to sound really sweet when loud, warm and powerful––and intelligent and delicate at the same time. MLA was all of these things and more.”

KM Productions Upgrades Inventory With HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi1™ Consoles

ALBERTSON, New York — In order to fulfill the demands of a variety of events, Kevin Mignone, President of Albertson, New York-based KM Productions, recently purchased two HARMAN Soundcraft Vi1 consoles. Mignone felt it was necessary to upgrade to more reliable, cost-effective consoles that could provide greater flexibility for his clients, which includes Vali, a high-end event band.

Vali, an exclusive performance band that typically plays at large wedding events weekly, including Chelsea Clinton’s wedding in July 2011, relies on KM Productions to provide its audio systems, and front-of-house and monitor mixing.

After using a demo model of the Vi1, Mignone was pleased with the results and purchased two consoles in order to allow one console to permanently travel with Vali.

“In venues of all sizes, it is great to have the flexibility and the option to do anything. Hitachi CP-AW250N LCD Projectors Deliver a Striking “Surround Video” Viewing Experience in Hilton Nashville Hotel Installation

CHULA VISTA, California, December 5, 2011 — Six Hitachi CP-AW250N ultra-short throw LCD projectors were recently used at the Hilton Nashville Downtown as part of a one-of-a-kind presentation environment for CJ Advertising of Nashville, Tennessee as part of a client event. The uniquely configured audio/visual system was designed and installed by systems contractor Springtree Media Group of Franklin, Tennessee.

“CJ Advertising hosts an annual presentation for their clients and we’ve worked with them for five years,” said Jacob McDaniel of Springtree Media Group. “In the past, we’ve placed the projectors and the screens on the floor in the corners of the room–a pretty conventional approach. But this year CJ wanted to try something fresh and new that would deliver an unforgettable ‘wow factor’ for their clients.”

“Peter Vaque, the owner of Springtree Media Group, dreamed up a striking new look that involved creating a nearly 360-degree viewing experience by suspending six projection screens in the room,” McDaniel continued. “CJ Advertising loved the concept. But then, we had to figure out how to make it happen!”

Springtree Media Group uses Hitachi ultra-short throw projectors in its rental department because many events–including this one–don’t allow for the extra 16 feet typically needed between the projector and the screen. “Our Hitachi ultra-short throw projectors do an excellent job in restricted-space situations,” McDaniel said. “Also, CJ wanted to use 16:9 widescreen projection, so we looked at a number of Hitachi’s short-throw projectors with widescreen capability. The CP-AW250N looked like the perfect fit.”

From there, Springtree Media Group had to figure out how to mount the projectors and screens. “We settled on hanging a 36-foot truss from the ceiling,” McDaniel noted. “From that truss, we hung six widescreen projection screens, oriented so that all attendees could see a screen from any point in the room.”

McDaniel and his team connected I-Beams that ran perpendicular to the long truss and hung the CP-AW250N projectors from the I-Beams. They also attached LED lighting to the beams, to fill the presenter’s walking area with stage lighting and different colors. The installation was rounded out by four LCD monitors angled on the floor, one in each corner of the presenter’s walking area, so the presenter could always see his slides no matter where he walked.

“This installation required a lot of planning up front,” McDaniel said. “We had to run a few tests to determine which projector would work the best, and how big of a screen we could use with that projector. We wanted to make the screens as big as possible, but we had to make sure there was enough room for the presenter to walk underneath them without hitting his head. In addition, we had to figure out how to hang everything in a safe and effective manner.”

With the help of Hitachi’s CP-AW250N projectors, the project came together beautifully. “The images were bright, sharp and vivid and the unique setup really kept everyone’s attention.
CJ Advertising and their clients were very happy with the final product,” McDaniel concluded.

HARMAN’s Studer Vista 5™ M2 Makes French Debut at Paris Hippodrome

PARIS, France – The 35,000-capacity Hippodrome de Paris-Vincennes, which over the years has been as well known for hosting rock concerts as for its main purpose of horse racing, has recently upgraded its production infrastructure.

One of the steps taken by the technical department was to replace its old analogue mixing console with a Studer Vista 5 M2 digital desk, configured with 32 mic/line inputs, 72 line out and eight AES I/O. This was the first sale of the new console in France (and one of the first to be shipped anywhere in the world).

The large venue, with its 3000 sq metre Grand Hall, is a world famous venue for trotting events, with the jockeys pulling a two-wheel cart known as a ‘sulky’. The main track itself measures 2km in length (whereas it is generally only 800m or 1600m in other horse racing arenas).

It is to these meetings, which include the famous ‘Prix d’Amerique’, that the control room itself is dedicated, while the races themselves are displayed on a 100 sq. metre large external screen, one of the largest in Europe.

The venue’s management company SECF (Société d’Encouragement du Cheval Français), contacted Jean-Philippe Blanchard, Broadcast Division Director at Audiopole, the French Studer distributor, with whom they have a long association.

“They were looking for an upgrade to mix the ambient sounds and commentaries within the amphitheatre, both for live playback and broadcast purposes,” stated M. Blanchard.

“The operators were impressed by the quick and easy operation of the Vistonics screen, which gives them instant control over all the channel functions, and by the new metering, which will give them better control of all incoming signals. They also noticed that engineers are able to work for hours at a time on the console without getting tired.”

Installation of the new Vista 5 M2 took place during the month of August when the venue was closed. Its arrival marks the start of a new era of broadcast coverage for a venue that dates back to 1879 — when it was originally built.

Electro Acoustics Installs HARMAN’s JBL VLA Line Arrays At University Of North Texas’ Newly Constructed APOGEE Stadium

APOGEE Stadium at the University of North Texas features an audio system comprised of JBL VLA line arrays.

NORTHRIDGE, California – At the epicenter of the University of North Texas’ “Mean Green Village” outside of campus, Fort Worth, Texas-based Electro Acoustics has outfitted the newly constructed APOGEE Stadium with HARMAN’s JBL VLA line arrays. Designed by Gary White of Wrightson, Johnson, Haddon & Williams, Inc., it was important for the PA system to provide high output, high clarity and immense power.

The 30,850-person capacity APOGEE Stadium features a main scoreboard system comprising eight JBL VLA901 line array loudspeakers, combined with eight VLA601 loudspeakers, each split four to each side. Three additional VLA901H and four VLA601H loudspeakers round out the scoreboard sound system. Installed throughout the stadium for additional PA support are 74 Control® 26CT ceiling speakers and 18 Control 30 outdoor monitor speakers.

“JBL’s VLA line arrays provide the power and reliability the client required in such a demanding venue,” stated Chris Jordan, president of Electro-Acoustics. “The speakers are perfect for an outdoor environment. We focused on providing a loud system that could withstand any inconvenient weather. The VLA loudspeakers are performing exactly as they were designed.”

Crown amplifiers power APOGEE Stadium’s sound system, which also features BSS processing. The entire system is controlled through HARMAN’s HiQnet System Architect™.

To help make certain construction of the stadium was completed on time, Electro Acoustics designed, built, tested and tweaked the entire system in its studio–an important strategy to ensure the safety and structural integrity of the construction site.

“The speakers were easily rigged and time was the only challenge when dealing with the new construction of APOGEE,” Jordan continued. “UNT was our first major install of VLA line arrays and we are very proud of the outcome. The stadium sounds amazing. The clients received exactly what they expected, on time and on budget.”

Seven Middle Atlantic racks accomplish the same dual function in Savant’s equally functional and stylish 5,000 square foot Commercial Experience Center that features a Hotel Room Suite, Telepresence/Teleconference room, Sports Bar, Distance Learning Classroom, Corporate Boardroom, and multiple Digital Signage Stations.

Middle Atlantic also plays a critical role at Savant’s main training facility located at the company’s Headquarters in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Equipped with five SRSR Series Slide Out and Rotating racks and four MRK Series racks, it is the site for weekly classes held for Savant’s integrators.

The intensive training introduces Savant’s products and methodologies in a classroom setting outfitted with Savant automation and other equipment, all fitted neatly into Middle Atlantic racks valued for their accessibility, ease of servicing and build quality.

The rest of the building includes 13 demo configuration stations that enable integrators to get hands on experience with Savant’s products and those of other manufacturers in a simulated installation.

Electro Acoustics Installs Texas Christian University’s Amon G. Carter Stadium’s Sound With HARMAN’s JBL VLA Line Arrays

The new audio system at Amon G. Carter Stadium at Texas Christian University is highlighted by JBL VLA line arrays.

NORTHRIDGE, California – Home to the Texas Christian University (TCU) Horned Frogs’ football team, Amon G. Carter Stadium is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar rebuild, which includes a full redesign of the sound system. Initially, a HARMAN-based distributed system was considered with custom boxes; however, the University desired the “big sound” that comes with an end zone cluster.

Casey Sherred of Acoustic Dimensions in Addison, Texas worked with the University to design a system that would capture and deliver the feel of the college football experience. “As HKS Architects developed the design for the stadium, iterative changes moved the scoreboard to a level that made an end zone solution possible, giving the University the audio experience it wanted to enhance game-day excitement,” Sherred said. “TCU was very pleased with the performance of its original JBL system, which drove the selection of HARMAN products from speakers, amplifiers, DSP to the audio console.”

Fort Worth, Texas-based Electro Acoustics installed the complete HARMAN system, highlighted by six JBL VLA loudspeaker arrays.

The stadium, which was operable during the 2011 football season, is slated to complete construction by the 2012 season. With the sound system replaced, it now boasts 20 VLA601H-WRX loudspeakers, eight VLA601-WRX’s, eight VLA301H-WRX’s and eight ASB6128 subwoofers hanging from the scoreboard behind the north end zone. The north seating areas are covered by four PD5322/95-WRX, two PD743-WRX, 11 AM7212/00-WRX and 15 Control 28T-60 loudspeakers. Throughout the seating and pedestrian traffic areas, audio systems include: 189 Control 26CT ceiling speakers located in the restrooms and 89 Control 25AV’s providing sound to concession areas. The Founder’s Lounge and Champion’s Club utilize 28 Control 227CT’s and seven Control 321CT’s to entertain the crowds with clear, live music and commentary.

“The VLA speakers allowed us to design a system that exhibited broadband pattern control, facilitating great sound 600 feet away while controlling sound levels on the party deck just 25 feet below,” Sherred said.

The schedule was tight with construction occurring during the football season. Installation and commissioning of the audio system was scheduled down to a ‘T’ as installers and designers dealt with construction on the stadium. The most challenging aspect was ensuring the sound and building contractors did not interfere with each other, causing delays or budget overruns. According to Chris Jordan, president of Electro Acoustics, by working with the contractors and electricians, Electro Acoustics was able to construct, program and test the equipment in their shop, shipping and rigging it at the field when time permitted. The project was completed on time and within budget.

“JBL has proven itself with TCU as a reliable, high-quality performer over the decades, which aligns itself perfectly with the reputation of Horned Frogs football,” stated Jordan. “Constantly in the national spotlight and drawing sold out crowds, it is important to have a stadium that not only looks like it hosts a national caliber team, but one that also excites the crowd and offers that extra ‘wow’ factor. The VLA system throughout the stadium is top-quality and performs immaculately.”

The sound system is powered by Crown amplifiers – 43 MA-5000i’s and 18 MA-9000i’s, accompanied with CTS 1200, 2000, 3000, 4200A, 600 and 8200A amps – and processed through BSS London DSP technology, including BLU-120, 160, 800 BLU-10 touchscreen remote and SW9012US volume controllers in the suites. The Soundcraft Si Compact digital console will be installed during the offseason. The HARMAN system is controlled through HARMAN’s HiQnet System ArchitectTM.

“We’ve had a great relationship with TCU over the past 20 years and they continue to rely on our experience to do exactly what we promise and to provide exceptional service,” Jordan said. “The system sounds great. TCU expected a loud and clear system to excite their fans and players and that’s exactly what we installed. There is plenty of headroom, low distortion and it is absolutely clear.”

“I’ve received multiple complements, from university admin, coaches, players and even folks around the neighborhood,” Jordan continued. “We couldn’t ask for a better response.”
