DPA Appoints OKNO-AUDIO As Its Distribution Partner In Russia

DPA Microphones has appointed OKNO-AUDIO as its new distributor in Russia, with responsibility for its entire product range including the Award-winning d:facto™ Vocal Microphone, the recently introduced modular active booms from the d:dicate™ Recording microphone and d:fine™ 66 and 88 Miniature Headset Microphones.

Established in 2012, OKNO-AUDIO is a division of Russia’s premier broadcast systems integration company OKNO-TV, which itself has been in operation for more than 20 years. WorldStage Delivers First 3G Press Event for Mercedes-Benz at 2014 North American International Aut

When Mercedes-Benz took the stage for its press event at the 2014 North American International Auto Show at Detroit’s COBO Center, it deployed what is believed to be the country’s first 3G HD-SDI fly pack, now available from WorldStage. The auto show marked the tenth anniversary of WorldStage’s partnership with the brand and client Fischer Appelt, and it was the first entirely 3G event for WorldStage.

“Mercedes and its German engineering team always push the envelope, and they encourage their vendors to do the same,” says WorldStage senior account executive Michael May. “They have always been on the leading edge of new AV technologies. Years ago, they were the first to use our HD fly pack and now are the first to take advantage of our 3G fly pack.”

3G technology for rental and staging breaks out of the limitations of 1080i displays to allow 1080p displays at 60 fps for smoother motion with fewer artifacts. The impact of much higher bandwidth and progressive video is immediately apparent on videowalls, LED walls and big-screen displays.

The Mercedes press event at the auto show is always high profile. This year Destiny’s Child Kelly Rowland performed and webcast feeds took the show around the world.

Mercedes showcased an extra large LED wall, supplied by XL Video in Europe, which spanned the entire back wall of its booth and was one of the larger displays on the auto show floor. The WorldStage 3G facilities package supplied cameras, playback, switching and servers to drive content to the wall.

“We did a lot of prep work in our shop in Tustin, California prior to the show,” says May, “performing software upgrades and integrating new and older equipment so everything was 3G-ready. When we arrived at the auto show it was well below zero outside and the truck was delayed 24 hours by storms. That cut our install time, but thanks to the extensive pre-production effort, everything went off perfectly.”

WorldStage provided four Sony 2500 3G cameras for live image feeds and IMAG; two were mounted on pedestals, one on a Steadicam and one on a jib. A Sony MVS-7000 3G switcher took all of the camera feeds to the LED wall and other displays. Two EVS LSM-XT3 3G servers played back the prerecorded content.

WorldStage also furnished a Yamaha LS9 digital audio console and Riedel digital intercom system.

“Mercedes prefers to run the show like a TV studio,” says May. “The challenge is to create that type of environment in the tight confines of a trade show floor were every inch of floor space is critical. It requires a lot of planning and coordination but as this team has worked together for so long, it’s almost second nature.

3G video technology is just beginning to make inroads in the media and entertainment world. Motion pictures and video gaming are expected to be early adopters for enhanced digital cinema and game playback, but May thinks rental and staging won’t be far behind. “Once the corporate world sees 3G in person we expect to get a lot of inquiries about our 3G system.”

NAB 2014: Digital Nirvana’s MediaPro 2.0 Offers a Fast, Affordable Way to Repurpose Content for Social Media and the Cloud

NAB 2014: FOR-A Continues to Focus on 4K

4K booth highlights include an updated FT-ONE camera, new extraction system, multi viewers, virtual studio system and up converter

Cypress, CA – At next month’s NAB 2014 Show, FOR-A Corporation of America will introduce several new 4K products and showcase a wide range of its popular solutions for the professional video and broadcast industries. Aligning with its NAB theme, “FOR-A for a 4K future,” the company’s primary focus will be on demonstrating cost-effective products for every stage of the 4K workflow – from capturing, processing, switching, and viewing, to recording stunning 4K images. FOR-A will exhibit in Booth C5117 at the show, which runs April 7-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Full 4K Super Slow-Motion Camera & Extraction System

A main highlight of FOR-A’s NAB booth will be the newest version of its FT-ONE 4K super slow motion camera. Capable of storing 9.4 seconds of full 4K resolution images at 900 frames per second, the latest version of the camera features fiber I/O connections built into the unit to make system configuration and setup easier, particularly when the production calls for the camera to be used a far distance away from the base station.

FOR-A’s ZE-ONE 4K zoom extraction system will make its NAB introduction. Featuring an intuitive touch-screen interface, the unit allows FT-ONE users to frame and extract specified 4K image areas. FOR-A will be showing live demos of the ZE-ONE in action in its booth.

Multi Viewers

Other products to be debuted by FOR-A at the show include the MV-4200, MV-42HSA and MV-1620HSA multi viewers. The MV-4200 is a compact, 2 RU unit multi viewer that accepts 4K signals, and is capable of handling up to 68 inputs and 8 outputs.

The new MV-42HSA and MV-1620HSA multi viewers include 3G Level A/B support and 4K to HD down-converted output. The MV-1620HSA accepts up to 16 channels of mixed 3G/HD/SD-SDI/analog composite signals for monitoring on up to two screens, and can also be cascaded with other units to display up to 64 sources simultaneously.

Ultra Resolution Up Converter

New for NAB is FOR-A’s URC-4000 super resolution 4K up converter. The unit provides powerful up-conversion and turns HD video into 4K in real time using original I/P and resolution conversion technology developed by FOR-A.

Graphics

FOR-A will also be debuting VRCAM3, a sensor-less virtual studio system that uses 4K chroma keying technology to provide stunning picture quality. The versatile VRCAM3 links computer graphics to camera motion simply by connecting it to a 4K camera. Using extracted 4K image areas, the Brainstorm rendering engine produces HD output in real time.

Also to debut at NAB is FOR-A’s VTW-350HS HD/SD character generator. The compact, affordable unit provides a rich array of text/graphic functions, more than 260 transitions, and template control, making it an ideal choice for live applications.

Video Switchers

The HVS-390HS HD/SD 1-2.5 M/E video switcher will also be displayed. The versatile switcher offers a dozen DVE channels. Featuring advanced AUX technology, the HVS-390HS has the capability to be a virtual 6 M/E unit.

FOR-A will also show its HVS-XT series of portable video switchers. The HVS-XT100 comes with a separate main unit and control panel, while the HVS-XT110 features a compact, integrated design.

Signal Processor

Following in the footsteps of FOR-A’s award winning FA-1010 signal processor, a new, smaller version of the multi channel signal processor will debut at this year’s show, the FA-505. The 5-input, 5-ouput signal processor features up/down/cross conversion capability on each input.

The company will be showing the FA-10RU, FA-AUX30, and FA-10DCCRU remote control units for the FA-1010 signal processor. Making its first NAB introduction, the FA-10DCCRU is a dedicated remote control unit for color correction.

FOR-A’s FRC Premiere Pro export plug-in video format converter software for Adobe Premiere Pro CC/CS6 Windows will also make its debut.

File-based Products

FOR-A will also demonstrate filebased products, including a new addition to the LTR LTO-based archive recorder series, the LTR-200HS. The unit supports new LTO-6 tape technology and Avid DNX-HD. It features HD/SD-SDI input/output, broadcast quality codec, and MXF wrapping and unwrapping.

Also to debut at NAB is the new LTS-60 media archiving server for LTO-6 drives. The LTS-60 is an ideal small-scale archiving and backup solution that supports 4K archiving.

Ultra Sensitivity Camera

FOR-A will be showing off a new camera from its group company, Flovel. The FZ-B3 ultra high sensitivity HD digital camera captures colorful images in a moonlight environment, and is a 3 CMOS-type version of Flovel’s popular FZ-B1 ultra high sensitivity camera.

IP Encoder/Decoder Solutions

FOR-A will also display Fujitsu’s high-performance IP-920, IP-9500, and IP-9610 encoder/decoder solutions in its booth. The encoder/decoder series uses advanced MPEG-4 AVC technology encoding, known as H.264, to perform real-time transmission of HDTV at low bit rates over DVB and broadband IT networks, and is capable of operating at less than 99ms back-to-back latency. FOR-A will have a 4K display of Fujitsu solutions using two IP-9500 video encoders.

Scheduled for an official debut in 2015, FOR-A will also show Fujitsu HEVC/H.265 compatible IP series technology currently in development.

The Hilio D12/T12 fixtures were designed by Litepanels to augment the lighting requirements of broadcast studios, as well as motion picture, episodic television, and commercial location shoots. The versatile panels emit a raw, narrow beam that provides high intensity for long throws. This intensity can also be harnessed and shaped with an array of available accessories to light an exterior, wash a set with soft light, or illuminate a cyc wall or green screen.

Eliminating the need for external dimmers, the fixtures feature Litepanels’ smooth dimming, from 100 percent to zero with no noticeable color shift, and are flicker-free at any frame rate or shutter angle. The panels also offer an integrated DMX module, with readily available and affordable RJ45 Ethernet connections for remote dimming control via any standard DMX512 protocol device.

With no need for a heavy ballast or cabling, the incredibly energy efficient Hilio D12/T12 fixtures draw only 350 watts of electricity, comparable to a 2K Tungsten Par in terms of output. The consistently color accurate, long life LEDs provide years of service without the need for traditional lamp replacement, and they emit no UV or infrared wavelengths.

Each panel contains a microprocessor operated, active cooling system, which increases manageability and lowers temperature control costs. The Hilio D12/T12 fixtures feature a removable, external power supply with convenient mounting bracket and optional accessories that include a stand mounted plate and an extension power cable.

The Hilio D12/T12 panels come complete with integrated slots to hold color and diffusion gel filters and Litepanels’ new NanopticTM lenses. The Nanoptic lenses spread and shape the light in circular, horizontal or vertical patterns and essentially convert the powerful open source into a soft light or broad directional fill. The rear of the unit features an LCD display and a multi-functional control with a menu-based button interface. An SD card slot is also built-in to easily facilitate future software upgrades. The user-friendly fixtures include a Standard Yoke with Junior Pin to enable easy mounting and positioning.

Broadcast Pix Announces Partnership with Virtualsetworks to Offer High Quality Virtual Sets

Avolites Hosts Free Weekly Training Webinars

Manufacturer offers interactive sessions covering Titan Version 7 and Ai Media Server

LONDON — In an effort to provide the very best product support to its current clients and potential customers, Avolites announces its continuing series of free weekly online training sessions. Hosted from the manufacturer’s worldwide headquarters in London, several one-hour GoToMeeting webinars each Thursday cover various topics related to Avolites and Avolites Media products.

Sessions held at 9:00 a.m. EST every Thursday guide users through the GUI of Avolites’ groundbreaking Ai Media Server. Attendees learn how to navigate the built-in 3D visualizer, import video files and play them back, and adjust these videos by changing color and adding effects, introducing keystone and warps. The informal sessions will also cover video mapping to non-uniform projection surfaces and output to LED screens.

Webinars held one hour later at 10:00 a.m. EST focus on Titan Version 7 and feature the Avolites Titan Simulator, which allows attendees to view every button press made by the trainer, see features and ask questions. The schedule for the remainder of March and April is as follows:

ABS to Design, Integrate HD Upgrade of Television Production Facilities at San Jose State University

SEATAC, WA — Professional video and audio systems integration firm Advanced Broadcast Solutions (ABS) today announced it has been contracted to provide a comprehensive HD upgrade of the video production facilities for the School of Journalism and Mass Communications (JMC) at San Jose State University in San Jose, Calif. ABS will design, procure, and install the system, which should be completed in April.

Since ABS won the bid process, Bob Rucker, director of the JMC School, has been impressed by the company’s expertise in classroom technology designed specifically for journalism education. “They understood what we were trying to do from day one,” he said. “ABS has done a fantastic job staying on budget, being creative with innovations in the technology and enabling new ideas throughout the process.”

Budgeted at more than $600,000, the project will include an overhaul of the television studio, control room and a separate newsroom “flashcam” location in the new converged newsroom in Dwight Bentel Hall. The upgrade is funded by the Jack and Emma Anderson Fund, an $8.7 million endowment from the couple who owned the print shop that published the school’s Spartan Daily newspaper for more than 40 years, and administered by the university’s Tower Foundation.

A 24-input Ross Video Carbonite 1-A M/E production switcher with built-in multi-view will anchor the control room. Other components will include a Yamaha LS9-32 digital audio console, Clear-Com intercom system and Panasonic 55-inch LED monitors. The new Ross XPression Studio CG will be configured to connect with the school’s convergence newsroom computer system for automatic loading of graphics through a MOS gateway.

Four new HD cameras will be housed in the updated studio, three Sony HXC-D70K cameras coupled with Autocue 17-inch prompters on Libec pedestals, plus one Sony BRC-Z330 PTZ camera mounted to the lighting grid for overhead shots. ABS will also install custom curtains, a Pro Cyc 3B-EZ System and a new lighting package.

Inside the newly renovated newsroom, where award-winning newspaper, television, magazine and advertising students work together, the “Breaking News Desk” will be used to produce live standups and other segments for Web-based news reports and Update News, the school’s television newscast. The area will feature a wall-mounted Sony PTZ camera that can be operated from the control room or locally via handheld remote.

“Educational institutions don’t often get a chance to upgrade their production facilities, especially not on a scale like this project for San Jose State,” said Mark Siegel, president of ABS. “We’ve designed an HD workflow that mirrors the file-based operations found in broadcast news environments across the country to prepare students for the real world. The new system will be a viable teaching environment for years to come, and it’s been specifically engineered for future expansion.”

While Rucker acknowledged the school’s last major video technology upgrade was in the mid-1990s, new equipment and a new strategic plan will help raise the school’s international profile. “We’ve got some very big plans for this new studio,” he said. “Our goal is to create a center for social media research in Silicon Valley. We’re going to create a global learning opportunity for our school that will excite and enable our diverse student body to test their creative new media ideas and technology approaches alongside the world class experts of Silicon Valley.”
