Draper Announces Yet Another ISF Certification

(Spiceland, Ind.) – Draper, Inc. has announced its TecVision XH900X Grey projection viewing surface has been certified by the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) for excellent color reproduction and fidelity. XH900X Grey performs very well in moderate ambient light, is well suited for high resolution content, and is 4K ready. This latest announcement means the entire TecVision Engineered Surface Technology line is now ISF certified.TecVision_XH900X_Grey

To be certified by the ISF, a screen has to have a flat spectral response—or color fidelity. In other words, the screen cannot affect the color of the image enough for the human eye to perceive.
Traditionally, projection screens have fooled the eye that things are brighter by using blue tints, according to ISF President and founder Joel Silver.

“The problem,” says Silver, “is if you accentuate the blue that means you aren’t getting the greens or reds you need to build a color-accurate image. We want to take whatever the artist created and bring it to the screen with fidelity.”
“We basically tie ourselves into something called a pure white matte screen –a screen that is a reference color,” Silver says of testing projection screens for color performance. “Neutral white … not a hint of tint to it. The picture you get is what was it was meant to look like from the factory … not tinted.”

Currently available in six exclusive formulations, TecVision features white surfaces with gains ranging from 1.0 to 1.9 over remarkably wide viewing cones, and grey surfaces with excellent performance under higher room light levels. All TecVision surfaces are also 4K ready, but what most impressed Silver when certifying TecVision is the ability of some of the high gain surfaces to deal with ambient light while preserving color fidelity.

“Finding the color fidelity of high gain materials close to that of no gain materials was wonderful!” Silver says. “Gain without a price to pay is a wonderful thing. I knew from measuring luminance even without the specifications that these screens were high gain, but I wasn’t seeing the penalty of color shift.

“It’s a great challenge,” Silver continues. “Adding gain without paying a penalty in color fidelity requires careful engineering. Compliments to the engineer!”

Yamaha NUAGE Less Of A “Grind” For Audio Post Facility

Grind_Music and Sound NUAGE

BUENA PARK, Calif.—Grind Music and Sound is a professional audio post-production facility located in Los Angeles, California. Their specialty is sound design & mixing for adventure sports and documentary films and television. With two studios, one mix/sound design room and one composition/editorial room, the Company recently installed a Yamaha NUAGE Advanced Production DAW System purchased through Hollywood Sound Systems. Co-owners Michelle Garuik, who works mainly in the mix room, sound designing and mixing, and Sangtar Heer who writes in the composition/editorial room, use the NUAGE Room for his albums’ mix.

“We were researching DAW controllers and mixing consoles for the studio and first became aware of NUAGE through the Internet and magazine advertisements a year ago, which led us to the Yamaha Commercial Audio web site, states Garuik. Our first physical contact and demo with NUAGE was at AES in LA. Besides watching the public demonstrations at the Yamaha booth, we were given a private demo by Yamaha’s Marcel Mauceri.” The duo were introduced to John Conard from Hollywood Sound Systems, and the next week given an intensive demo with Hollywood Sounds audio tech, Brett Grossman, and Yamaha’s District Manager David Lees.

“NUAGE’s deep integration with Nuendo was an immediate draw for us, says Garuik. It is much more than faders, pan-pots and the usual four to five things you find on most controllers. Anything you need to do in Nuendo, you can access on NUAGE. Also, the fact that it is a Yamaha Commercial Audio product was another plus for us. Having mixed on Yamaha consoles in the past, we were already familiar with the build quality and support.”

The co-owners had been looking at consoles and DAW controllers for some time and nothing really fit all their needs until NUAGE. “The tactile surfaces give us so many solutions for our different ways of working, Garuik says. After mixing in the box for years, it is great to have instant access to deep features in Nuendo with just a touch of a button. It’s also nice to have different ways to perform tasks enabling us to work faster and more intuitively. The mixing integration with Nuendo is fantastic in speeding up our workflow. With project deadlines having faster and faster turnarounds, NUAGE lets us meet the demands of our partners and makes mixing even more fun.”

Garuik said the ability to store different setups for their individual project needs is a huge plus. Mixing a 5.1 television documentary has a very different setup than mixing a music album, and the ability to switch quickly and seamlessly between those setups was paramount in their decision. The pair has been using Nuendo daily since its inception, first introduced to it at AES in 2000 where their journey began with version 1.0, and using Cubase since the early 90’s.

With Garuik specializing in mixing action/adventure sports projects, some of Grind Music and Sound clients include: Red Bull, FOX Sports, CBS Sports, NBC Sports and Specialized Bicycles. “Our first television mix on NUAGE was for FOX Sports Training Day “Team Alpha Male” episode, and it went amazingly well.
Grind set up the system with assistance from Hollywood Sound’s Grossman on a Friday, spent Saturday programming quick keys and setting up their system preferences, and on Monday, mixed the 22-minute episode.

“The mix went very smoothly, and having access to 16 faders at once, really sped up mixing for me. The master unit rocker wheel was a dream to edit with; cleaning up edits was faster with less clicking. I was also very impressed with the monitoring integration of NUAGE and the I/O Nio500-A16 unit. The sound was impressively clear.”

In the first two weeks Grind has had their system, they have mixed two shows for FOX Sports, two National Parks educational videos, and a Specialized Bicycle promo. They are also mid-mix on an upcoming documentary for HBO.

“At the end of the day, I feel extremely comfortable on NUAGE, like I had been working on it for years.”

Heer is currently editing and mixing a live DVD concert video on NUAGE of his 2014 Punjabi Virsa North American tour.

DVIGear Launches Single-Fiber 4K Optical Extenders

Compact Extenders Deliver Immense Value for System Integrators

Marietta, Georgia    December 8, 2014  –  DVIGear, a leading manufacturer of digital connectivity products, has launched its models DVI-7313 and DVI-7314, the highest value single-fiber optical extenders on the market.  These powerful, yet compact extenders support 4K / 30p resolution signals up to 1.2 miles and are targeted for professional AV system installations and rental & staging applications.

DVI-7313 and DVI-7314 4K Fiber Optic Extenders, 1x LC

Extends 4K Signals Over Extreme Distances

DVIGear’s DVI-7313 and DVI-7314 are high performance 4K Optical Extenders that transmit high resolution DVI / HDMI signals over extreme distances using a single fiber optic cable. These extenders support HDMI v1.4 (non-HDCP) signals with resolutions up to 4K (4096×2160 / 30p) over cable distances up to 1640 ft. (DVI-7313) and up to 1.2 miles (DVI-7314).

These extenders are similarly priced as other extension technologies (such as HDBaseT™) while providing flawless optical performance at much greater distances. The DVI-7313 supports Multi-Mode optical fiber, while the DVI-7314 supports both Multi-Mode and Single-Mode fiber optic cable.

Cutting-Edge Fiber Optic Technology

Most single-fiber optical extenders transmit signals over multiple optical wavelengths, which can suffer from chromatic dispersion over long cable runs.  To avoid this issue, these extenders employ a cutting-edge, high-speed SerDes that combines the DVI / HDMI signal channels into a single uncompressed 10.3 Gbps bit stream.  This enables the optical transmission of the signal over a single optical wavelength, which provides increased signal fidelity, stability and flawless image quality, regardless of cable length.

Custom Fiber Optic Cable

DVIGear’s custom length fiber optic cables may be used with these extenders to maximize extension distance and system performance. Integrators and designers can select from a wide range of options including: Single-Mode, Multi-Mode (OM3), or Multi-Mode (OM4) at any cable length up to 10 km. Other options such as multiple terminated strands, breakout length, and pulling eye are also available.

These features make the DVI-7313 and DVI-7314 ideal choices for forward-looking system designers and integrators who want to future-proof their AV systems with robust 4K capable optical extension. They can be used in a wide range of digital display applications including rental & staging events, auditoriums, hotels, churches and other demanding environments. The suggested list price for the DVI-7313 is $698.00/pair, whereas the DVI-7314 is $798.00/pair. Both extender sets are available now for immediate delivery.

Shell Theatre Streamlines Dance and Music with HARMAN’s Soundcraft Vi6 Console

Scraft_ShellTheatreFORT SASKATCHEWAN, Canada – As the in-house audio operator for Shell Theatre, which recently acquired a HARMAN Soundcraft Vi6 digital console, Norah Seed is certainly well-equipped to handle the venue’s exciting variety of live programming. The 538-seat performing arts space accommodates numerous dance recitals, musicals, and Christmas productions throughout the year, while maintaining its own self-produced Season Series consisting of professional acts from around the world and local acts from the region.

Owned and operated by the City of Fort Saskatchewan as part of the Dow Centennial Centre and the Sherritt Cultural Pavilion, the Shell Theatre attracts many North American touring artists, with an emphasis on Canadian talent. When Seed first arrived at this venue, she used her 25 years of audio technician experience to learn a new digital console that provided a simple and effective way to mix each show and continues to meet or exceed various client needs.

“I’ve had experience with other consoles, but since I’m new to this venue, I’m grateful to have an easy console to work with,” said Seed. “I like the way it can be set up, as I can have as many auxiliaries and matrices I need for every file; all the gains and high pass filters are exactly where you expect it to be, and the EQ functions are flexible. Everything is in a logical place and it all makes sense.”

Many racks of outboard equipment were stored away immediately after the Shell Theatre acquired the Vi6, completing the transition from analog to digital. As the EQ, gates, compressors and reverb units collect dust underneath the stage, the Soundcraft console’s color-coded FaderGlowTM lighting and its widescreen Vistonics II™ interface illuminate the now de-cluttered space.

“I love the color-coded lighting on the faders and the Vistonics widescreen,” said Seed. “The interface is intuitive for whatever I want to do, such as EQ-ing the vocals instantly, rather than touching three buttons to get there. The illuminated and color coded faders are just handy to indicate which feature you are editing and for operating in a dark theatre environment.”

“The Vi6 combines the best of both digital and analog, because it allows me to mix quickly while having all those digital features,” Seed concluded. “Not only does it make my life easier, it also sounds great.”
